Juniper & Ivy San Diego Reviews from The Last Year

AMAZING!!! I've had a lot of great meals in my day and this one might be the best ever. Easily in the top 3. We came here for our 27th anniversary and are so glad we did. Excellent food and service. Can't wait to come back.

I love myself a nice restaurant but this place had pretentious food drenched in overpowering sauces or micro-herbs. Not worth the Michelin.

I came here a few years ago and had an amazing dinner so when we came back to San Diego I wanted to eat here again. While the food tasted amazing there were some service issues that have me double taking. My partner and I got the prix fix menu but my 12 year old vegetarian didn't see enough things to order off the prix fix so they ordered off the children's menu. They ordered buckwheat pancakes with strawberries. She is not a big eater but what they brought out was unacceptable for a meal and I was kind of pissed the waiter didn't call out her order before filling it. They brought her 3 quarter sized pancakes. They were tiny. They may have been good for a toddler but she is clearly not a toddler. I noticed they offered these on the adult prix fix menu and thought they brought her the prix fix menu portion by mistake. I asked the server and he said no those were the right ones. We had told him that was her meal when we ordered. He asked if we wanted to order more children's items. Being vegetarian limited this and there weren't any other items that were veggie friendly she was interested in. Plus, it had me wondering if the other items were teeny tiny? Like butter pasta or the hamburger and fries. It was just very odd they would bring that out and call it a child's meal. I'm used to throwing down $$ for good food but $12 for this "meal" of 3 tiny pancakes really irritated me. Second, our drinks came after the food. No offer to refill either. Third, not once but twice the people who brought out our food put the wrong dishes before my husband and I. They weren't even the server. I really hate the trend at fancy restaurants now that you get a variety of people bring things to you instead of the server. It's not personal. It's no big deal to switch plates but you guys want Michelin recognition? I'd expect better. Fourth I used the bathroom which is off a cove as you go up stairs. Both men and women go into the first room which has sinks. It's smelled completely horrible in this part as if some had used that area as a bathroom. Then I walked into the woman's stall and someone had thrown paper with notes into the toilet along with paper towels. I don't blame the restaurant for this but when I went to tell my server that they should look into before it clogs up he giggled and laughed. I even clarified that it wasn't women's products and he giggled more. I walked away feeling like that toilet wouldn't be attended too. As I walked out of the restaurant I saw the burger and fries which seemed normal size but I was pissed once again my daughter didn't get to eat with us on Mother's Day. Had to go down the street to get her a meal that wasn't 3 pancakes the size of quarters. If you are going to serve tiny pancakes as a meal pls use the words "silver dollar" or tell the server to explain the size to the parents. I wish I had taken a picture but I just couldn't believe it. Love the food. I was hoping this was my must visit SD restaurant but I'm not sure it's worth it when the server giggles at you for honestly reporting a bathroom back up. I worked in service for years and a back up in the ladies room can be bad if not attended to.
I can't recommend this place enough to people.
Everything we ordered was unique and fresh. Albacore Crudo: such a fresh and tangy taste and the crispy capers were perfect and added great taste and texture. Sunchoke stroganoff: I did not expect to like it as much as I did. It was so tasty and the flavor was fantastic and the mushrooms did not overpower the dish. Hanger steak: wow that was so yummy. The sauce on the carrots was so memorable and fantastic. The service was kind and helpful, but not memorable. I enjoyed the ambiance, but thought I was going to like it more. The food was by far the best thing about this restaurant wow!!

So much amazing food! We loved everything we tried and our server was amazing as well. We love the use of shiso leaves
One of, if not my FAVORITE American restaurant in San Diego.
From the moment we walked in, ambiance was beautiful, modern, and thoughtful. I felt fancy and fresh. The initial table we had OpenTable reservations for, when we sat down, was uneven. We politely asked to get switched to a booth, and they asked us to wait for 10 minutes, and we were re-seated. Service was amazing, and food was, too. Table favorites included the Carne Asada Toast, the Kale Salad, the Carbonara, and the Melon appetizer. Unfortunately, the Wagyu was a bit of a miss. The flavors of each dish were so carefully curated, and flavors and textures complemented so well. I can't wait to go back to try some more dishes! With tax and tip, it was about $300 for 3 of us.

We came for our 4 year anniversary and they really made us feel they were celebrating with us. Between seating us where we requested in the reservations, a happy anniversary message at the top of our menus, to the free bubbly, it was great experience. On top of that the food was phenomenal, and prices were totally reasonable for the food and drinks. Would 100% recommend for any event worth celebrating.
Europe Fine Dining in San Dieg-p
Reminds me of our Epicurian trip to Europe. Delightful Small Plates - packed with flavor. The Ravoli were divine - and the Miso Marinated Black Cod - was as good as NOBU has ever prepared it. Thanks to hostess Anna Shin for stopping by and further brightening our fine dining experience. Tom and Libby Schiff in San Diego
Came back with a friend to try out their regular night menu
Came back with a friend to try out their regular night menu (a la carte) Everything came out in order of light to heavy, flavors were refined and we loved it. Highlights: 1. lion's mane bigoli- al dente thicccc pasta, smooth and full of umami, not too heavy at all 2. Fanny Oysters- we went to town and got 4 orders 3. Snow peas w pistachio pesto and creme fraiche, was a surprising refreshing combo 4. Friend really liked that long-named sake, she got 2 (not pictured) Of note: 1. Sheep's head turned out to be not brain, thank goodness. It was a delicious fish crudo 2. Rabbit cacciatore- was the boldest and heaviest dish of the night. Personally I would have liked it slightly less salty (but probably just right if you have a regular American palate) Service was fantastic! Highly recommend this place for a date night, but not for huge groups (due to inability to order a la carte. We tried family-style last time and that was disappointing- see previous post)
THE BEST RESTAURANT IN LITTLE ITALY AND SAN DIEGO!!!!
THE BEST RESTAURANT IN LITTLE ITALY AND SAN DIEGO!!!! literally one of the very few fancy places that's worth the price. The ambiance is very calm and relaxing and the wait staff answered all my questions. I forgot the names of the dishes my friend and i got but the pimento cheese is addicting, idk what the put in it but that sħít goes hard!!!! And the salmon was cooked to perfection!
Came here last night for my birthday dinner and everything
Came here last night for my birthday dinner and everything we got was sooooo good. Highly recommend the spicy tuna hand roll, carne cruda asada toast, curried salmon, and the flat iron steak. Everything we had was gorgeous and delicious and super unique. Service was also very very good. Ambience was super modern and clean as well. We will definitely be back and hopefully they add the egg yolk ravioli back to the menu!!
Great experience
We loved the food, everything very fresh, excellent flavors, we tried a salmon and sweet potato with cream that was delicious. The dessert was the best for us, a delicious, very original carrot cake, different presentation. They have a children's menu but you have to ask about those options. I highly recommend it if you like food that's a little more original.
Lovely evening
We had a lovely evening here. The ambience of the restaurant is very nice with a lively but not noisy vibe. Service was great and the food delicious but rich. We liked the fact that the majority of the menu was designed for sharing and the small bites where you could have just one of something was perfect for us because it allowed me to try a sample of a dish my husband would not eat. They also brought us a complimentary dessert as we were celebrating.
Very good
First timer here. We live in San Diego so it took us a while! We entered with pretty high expectations (reputation and pricing) and happy to report that we have a very good experience. The ambience, service quality, and of course food quality were all very well executed. With a couple of glasses of wine, tax & tip, you're in it for about $100/person. It's a treat if you're looking for something beyond a 'normal' $60/person restaurant experience. Bonus points for not adding a mandatory % addition to pay/retain their people.
Cool and vibrant place
My partner and I went to this place two times and we enjoyed every time. First time we went on Friday, the restaurant was extremely busy so we sat at the bar. The dishes were flavourful, the drinks were good and the bartenders were cool. We really enjoyed how dynamic the environment was and how organised the team was working. Recently we went to the restaurant during the weekday: you could easily get a table and the service was consistently good. The duck dish is definitely the star of the show: the presentation, the taste, the variety on the plate is an experience of its own.
Good. Pricey. Different.
Ambience and service were excellent. Very helpful with menu and recommendation’s. Food was good. Had deviled egg, biscuit and tortellini. I was slightly disappointed in the biscuit as it was very hard on the outside. Inside was good! The deviled egg was good but something I can make at home. Beef cheek tortellini was very good and different. Pricing is a little crazy but seems to be San Diego!
Overall great experience
First time here. Went as 2 couples. We had a slow start with the hostess not around for maybe 5 min when we walked in. When we were sat we were told our server had not arrived yet, so we just waited at the table. It was very awkward. The server turned out to be great. We did 5 courses with wine pairings. Some of them were a miss but most were a big hit. The whole fried fish and duck were the highlight. We left over-full and happy. Place was slammed packed on a Thursday night.
Just Stunning
Did some internet research on dining in the city and Juniper & Ivy came up. The experience lived up to the expectations. Great space, well designed, interesting and innovative menu and a fantastic tribute to the supply chain on the reverse of the menu. Kevin was a fabulous and professional host. Thank you to the team.
Shaky start with Strong Overall Performance
We visited Juniper and Ivy on New Year’s Eve for a special Prix Fixe menu. We were greeted promptly by the hostesses who, despite our reservation, said that our table was not ready yet and that we should be seated in the lounge to wait. Sigh…not the most welcoming start but it’s NYE so we aren’t going to let this beginning ruin our experience. We ordered a couple of drinks and waited to be called. About ten minutes later we were approached and asked our name before being walked to our table through the spacious and modern dining room. They had chill dance/electronic music playing throughout our visit which was quite pleasant. We were given a choice between still or sparkling water immediately and quickly approached by our server, Alexandra. Let me say that they definitely have a team approach to serving so you won’t only be seeing one person during your visit. The service once we were seated was impeccable and timely. We ordered our four courses with a wine pairing. Each course was perfectly timed in delivery. I couldn’t possibly describe them all but I will say our favorites were the Scallops which were delectable and the Poached Pair dessert. Everything was good - and should have been at the price point. But those were our two favorites. Probably the biggest disappointment was the steak. It was fatty and the potatoes were boring. Our experience came to an end with the special Bon Bons delivered at the end of our meal. My partner really enjoyed those. I’m not a big fan of coconut so I only took one bite of mine. Parking at Juniper and Ivy is via valet or you can see if you can find one of the few street parking spots in Little Italy. You could also choose to take a rideshare which is what we did.
Just perfect, worthy of a Michelin star, or two.
We try to go to Juniper and Ivy whenever we’re in town. Sometimes it’s so-so, more often great. Last night it was amazing. We start with spicy tuna rolls and they melt in our mouths, moist, slightly spicy, even a bit fragrant, delicious. They’re wrapped in a leaf that makes them go down even easier. We order their amazing bread. So perfect, so yummy, flavours and textures subtle. Then the linguini with calamari, diablo sauce, croutons and sweet peppers. It brings to mind Cucina Urbana when they’re on. As well, we share black cod in a celery root chowder, trout roe, mushrooms and clams. Soft, comforting, perfect. For desert we also share their yodel, bananas, molten chocolate. Double delicious, just right for two. You want more, but are perfectly sated. Our server is great. My Sauvignon blanc tastes of apples and crispness to complement the meal, and green tea to finish. Just an incredible night and a truly wonderful dinner, worthy of a Michelin star and Juniper & Ivy at their best.

Hey @FluffyStar64, thanks for the question! When you place your bid the amount gets transferred in a deposit account, the second you either cancel your bid or a few minutes after the bid expires the funds are moved back into your main account from where you can refund it to your payment method or use for other transactions.
