J. Gilbert's Wood-Fired Steaks & Seafood Glastonbury East Hartford Reviews from The Last Year

The restaurant has always had good food, although way overpriced. Not a restaurant I would run back to. When you pay that kind of money for a meal, the food should be over the top, but it's not.
The sea scallops with lobster risotto was excellent.
Service was also very good. The space is a bit noisy, but nice otherwise.
Awesome food excellent service, it's pretty loud but I
Awesome food excellent service, it's pretty loud but I booked a closed off area towards the back, like a whole other place, highly recommend
DISSAPOINTMENT: OVERRATED, OVERPRICED and OVERBILLED
Overpriced, overbilled and overrated. I was looking forward for the family event to celebrate birthday after reading all raving reviews on the website I've decided to book reservation. However, although we had our reservation, we had to wait, and our table was not ready. Keep in mind it was Tuesday evening, not the weekend - and the restaurant had many open seats. Booking the reservation, I specifically mentioned that there will be a child at the party, but no special accommodations was offered to us (i.e. chair). We had to wait for the order to arrive at least 20 minutes. When our first order arrived - the calamary were disgusting, they were dry and extremely spicy - we couldn't eat them, the salad - which supposed to be regular garden salad had a pieces of grill corn in there and one of our family members had an allergy for corn - we were not notified about it prior to ordering. One of the entrees ordered arrived well (over well done) - it was ordered medium rare and had to be taken back to the kitchen to be "fixed". Although staff apologized - all others at our party almost finished their meal when the plate was finally brought back after being "fixed". The Ribeye was great, but we were billed for 2, when only ordered one (this I found after we left the restaurant). The night following the event, my granddaughter had a vomiting and diarrhea - we absolutely sure that cheeseburger she had contributed to). There was also nothing offered for the kid (no crayons -which usually given to the kids at other places). Overall, although our waitress service was great, we left very disappointed, and we will not be back to this place. I wouldn't give this place more than 1 star considering all of the above. In addition, this place is extremely overpriced. One glass of Moscato 16 dollars is way too much, and although the Ribeye was good - it is unsaintly high in price - $67.00

Private dinner meeting
I recently hosted a private dinner meeting at JGilberts in glastonbury The service, food and menu selection were excellent. A special thank you to Taylor.

Server Candace was amazing, very personable and attentive, would highly recommend this establishment
Very nice place.
I made a reservation. This place gets very busy even on an early Thursday evening!! Food was great! We skipped appetizers to save room for meal and dessert! I had a filet and shrimp with asparagus and mushrooms. My DH got scallops. Both meals were delicious! My steak was cooked to a perfect medium! Then we go dessert! OMG we got the crème brûlée. WOW! It was creamy and delicious! It was also larger than expected and more than enough for two, but I would have had no problem eating the whole thing myself it was so good!

I am not a steak lover, and this restaurant specializes in steaks. So I instead got a chicken penne, pasta, and now I can tell you, they specialize in pasta as well. My meal was excellent! The appetizers were wonderful as well and service was impeccable. Ambiance was dim lighting and romantic as well.
Refusing to Accommodate
Today May 25th , my family and I decided to dine out. We went to Red Lobster and while waiting to be seated we decided to go to J Gilbert instead based on a recommendation from my brother in law. We drove from Wethersfield to Glastonbury. I went inside the restaurant and told the greeter that we needed a table for 11 persons. We anticipated that we would have to wait to be seated so we went outside to sit and take pictures .After about 10 minutes the manager ( a white male) came outside and told us that he would not be able to seat such a large party .He went on to ask us what we wanted to eat and referred us to two other restaurants. One of which was Max Fish across the street. We have never felt more black than we did today. We were hurt by his refusal to accommodate . We went to Max and was greeted in a very friendly way and accommodated. Our bill at Max Fish was almost $900. I guess our black money was not good enough for J Gilbert. Racism is real.

My daughter and I went to dinner there before Wicked the musical. The atmosphere was nice, food was good and the service was amazing. Very pricey but a nice treat
All aspects of J Gilbert's are excellent.
Food, service and atmosphere are all outstanding. Prices are high but worth it. Bar has an affordable happy hour but you have to get there early. It gets packed very quickly.
Buyer Beware
I went to Glastonbury J. Gilbert's 3/29/2024 for my wife's birthday. Have been going there for a long while for special occasions and whenever we wanted a nice dinner. Tonight however, even though the dinner was excellent, although we didn't get everything we had ordered, I tried to use my $20.00 gift certificate (which I had previously forgotten) I received for purchasing gifts for friends at Christmas time. Although the small print said it had an expiration date, I was never told of any such thing. I thought CT didn't have expiration dates on gift cards. My BAD! I think your policy for gift cards having an expiration date is very disappointing! J. Einhorn
Had a good waitress, nice vibe.
It was a birthday, the waitress was great at everything. Not her fault but we were not allowed to bring a cake. Management called THE DAY OF our reservation so the $100 cake we bought was a waste, even after we offered to still buy dessert from the restaurant. But overall, the most disappointing part was being charged $3 for barbecue sauce....
Tonight was my second time dining at J Gilbert's.
I was also here three years ago for a birthday celebration. J Gilbert's is a fine dining establishment. Their waitstaff are throughly trained on the ins and outs of their menu. I have previously heard a rumor, that the waitstaff at J Gilbert are employed there full time, unlike at other restaurants. We were a party of six, again here for a celebration. We had a reservation for 4 o'clock. It was very busy, I would highly advise a reservation. We were seated quickly. Alex was our waiter. I got the Spicy Blackberry Margarita. This was so tasty, delicious with a kick of spicy from actual jalapeños! We got a large serving of the blue cheese potato chips. These are very thinly cut and once they were brought out, the server poured blue cheese sauce all over them. These are crispy, crunchy and pretty addictive! There were so many chips that the six of us couldn't finish them. For my meal I got the crab cakes, these came with asparagus and mashed potatoes as the sides. The crab cakes were very tender and fresh, they would fall apart with not a lot of effort. Unfortunately they were a bit too salty for me. I loved the mashed potatoes, they had a bit of texture, and were very delicious. The asparagus were tender and I ate them all the way through the end. Everyone was very happy with their meals. There were stakes and seafood going around the table. Whenever I see creme brûlée on a menu and I'm the mood for something sweet, I don't need to know about the other options. Creme Brûlée it was! it was so satisfying breaking that golden, glass-like sugar coat, to reveal that creamy, dreamy vanilla goodness! And the best part? I didn't have to share! We were all very satisfied with our dinner at J Gilbert's. From the service to the drinks to the main course and of course the desserts!
i have to say our last dinner was very disappointing.
When you pay $180 for two to eat out you expect better and in the past we always had received better. The lump crab cakes didn't disappoint but the meals did. I had the 8 ounce filet which was not cooked as I had ordered, the salted baked potato was small, and the green beans with pecans were so salty I couldn't even eat them. My husband liked his ribs, but he also complained about the green beans being too salty. He also said the mash potatoes were flavorless.
This is my second (1st 6 yrs ago) and hubs first time here.
We are house hunting in the area and finally had a night without children so we decided to treat ourselves. The best service and food hands down. I never order an old fashioned out for many years because it is always done wrong. The bartender Mike made it perfectly! (They have a smoked version on the menu, looks great, but not for me.) he hd amazing recommendations once he got an idea of what we liked and was very attentive. The whole restaurant is very well set up and lovely fireplace in the middle of the dining area. We spent more than we would normally( we have not been able to go out more than twice in 2 years), but our first time out in many years it was worth it!! If we move here I told my husband we need to come here every few months and I'll do whatever to save up so we can. It was the best time! (We are slow dining folks that like to take an hour for each course minimum)
Always a delicious meal no matter what I try.
Some of the best crab cakes I've had in my life, and I've had many! The service is exceptional. Have not had a bad waiter/waitress here yet. Is something is wrong they make it right. Homey atmosphere with a big field stone fireplace.
Tuna is back for lent
Good tuna. Best shrimp cocktail in area, 5 plump large shrimp cooked and chilled. Still requires reservations even for the bar tables.
J Gilbert's used to be my absolute favorite restaurant but
J Gilbert's used to be my absolute favorite restaurant but during/after Covid I felt like the service and quality declined. Prices went up and I felt like it was no longer worth going after having a few poor experiences. I will admit I still went a few times per year with friends to grab drinks or a snack at the bar but the desire of sitting down and enjoying a nice dinner lost its appeal for me. Fast forward to more recently and I felt it was time to give them another chance. Me and a friend went on a Tuesday night and it was PACKED. We arrived about 10-15 minutes early for our reservation so we hung out in the lobby while we waited for our table. Unfortunately we weren't sat until about 15 minutes after our actual reservation. Not a huge deal but had we known that they were running behind we would have grabbed a drink at the bar to kill some time. I won't mention him by name in case he was just having a bad night, maybe due to how busy it was in the restaurant, but our server seemed very cold and short with us. Definitely not the happy, friendly service I would expect here. Everything was still brought out promptly so no issue there. Drinks were amazing as always. I ordered a special steak they were offering - I believe it was 40 day dry aged. It was good but I think I would have been happy with the Kansas City strip I would typically get for about $20 less. Sides seemed larger than I remember which was nice. Overall we had a nice evening and enjoyed our food. The not so great service and increasing prices make this more of a 3.5 star review but rounding up for the ambiance, killer manhattans, and good time in general. I wish it was still a 5 star, near perfect experience like it used to be but unfortunately I think those days are gone.

We have many great steakhouses here in Wisconsin, but my recent experience at J Gilbert's while visiting my sister in Connecticut, proved to be one of the best I've ever been to. From the impeccable service, the beautiful decor and ambiance, to the outstanding food I can only say great things about this restaurant. The only negative thing about my experience is knowing that I'll need to travel back to Glastonbury to visit again! Bravo J Gilbert's.
Great dinner out!
Excellent service , very personable. Alec was a wonderful host for us. Management was present and available. We had a great time and will be back soon.
A little disappointed in the communication.
I called a couple weeks ago for reservations. I was given the email. Emailed 1/14, never received a response. Called again and now told there's nothing for the date I wanted. What's the point of having an email, if you don't get back to anyone.
[Very delayed review] This is straight up one of the best
[Very delayed review] This is straight up one of the best meals you can get in Connecticut. The "wood-fire" proclaimed in the name of the restaurant is ever-present in the perfectly grilled ribeye. Every bite was made me want hug the chef. The sides were far from boring. Perfectly made green beans along with the potatoes that had a bit of a kick from the poblano. I'm going to make an effort to return when I'm back in CT.
Great place for special occasions and going on a date too.
I had a great experience all around
You won’t be disappointed.
In my opinion J Gilberts never disappoints! They always have the best cooked steaks to order and the creamed corn is by far the absolute best I’ve ever experienced! The wait staff is top notch and always friendly and courteous.
Not So Special
Between the hype, the menu, and the reviews, we were expecting a spectacular meal. Appetizers were good. The much-touted fried onions were tasty, but the thick cut took away from overall flavor. There were 11 of us and three entrees had to be returned. 2 chicken dinners were undercooked and a steak overcooked. They were readily replaced and something taken off the bill, 6 it made what was supposed to be a family celebration awkward. No one knew whether to keep eating or stop while our companions waited for replacement meals. And even some of the other entrees were just ok. Crab cakes were bland and salmon a bit too sweet. On the plus side, bread was wonderful, and service was impeccable. We were treated well. But we go to restaurants for the food and we expected better.
An absolute gem and must-visit spot outside of Hartford!
Best restaurant in Connecticut. We started with date nights and special occasions and now we are twice a month if not more. You can’t beat this. Trip Advisor portrays other steakhouses as competition- and maybe they are in theory- but not in actuality. This place has NO competition. The food is fantastic but the servers are a cut above any other place I’ve ever dined. The management staff is always present and interacting with tables and do not accept anything but perfection. This is the best run restaurant I have ever seen short of the food network. We have never had a bad experience. If you haven’t dined here, put it on your bucket list, it’s and absolute must-visit spot.
Food Great - Too much salt and dining room way too COLD!!!
Went here because it is one of our favorite restaurants with great food and superb service! However, they use too much salt and we were drinking water all night long! Additionally, their dining room is always extremely cold, even with a sweater on! Obviously, management doesn’t care about customer comfort or controllable expenses!!!
Too good to only go once!
Great steak house restaurant! Fantastic meals and great bar offerings! We had a gift certificate for a birthday dinner, and they did not disappoint! The meals were amazing and the bar drinks were just as good!

Great Service - amazing dinner!!
Read about the site in NYT and bought a reservation at Mother Wolf in LA 2 days later. Worked great and the food was amazing!!!
Worked perfectly!
Got the reservation (that I couldn't get anywhere else) and was able to entertain a group of friends at the infamous Bern's Steakhouse.
Got into Nobu Malibu
Wonderful! My parents are visiting and we have wanted to go to Nobu Malibu for years. I tried getting a reservation myself but it was next to impossible. So glad I was able to buy a reservation on appointment trader for a decent price!
Very easy
Was very hesitant going into this experience but am glad to say that it worked out very well ! will definitely use appointment trader in the future
Fabulous Lunch
I was veeeeeerry skeptical that this would work, particularly at a restaurant as hard to get into as Nobu Malibu, and it was perfect! We had lunch outside on the patio and it was fabulous!
Great reviewer team
Just wanted to take a second to shout out the reviewer team. Even though they probably review hundreds of listings and bids a day, they still take the time to leave great comments and respond relatively quickly. Thanks!
Incredible
I got a reservation to Don Angie, which I've been trying to book for weeks! I am very happy with this service.
Best platform out there!
Super simple, easy, and fast to secure reservations for hard-to-get restaurants and locations!
This app is life changing
This app has opened my world up to so many wonderful new experiences I would never have the chance to have without access to this awesome app! 10/10!
Worked perfectly
Was a little nervous at first but was pleased to see that the booking went through flawlessly.
Highly recommended.

So glad I came across this app :)
Quick table in Miami
I didn’t have my hopes high as it was a party of 4. In 24 hours I had a carbone reservation available! I was very happy as my family really wanted to come here

perfect
Worked well, got me into a restaurant with no availability
I was skeptical, and I still don't really know how they managed to find this hard-to-find reservation, but it was a win-win from my point of view, and I'll use this service again.
Last minute reservation for Delilah Las Vegas
Got a last minute reservation, dinner for 2 at Delilah Las Vegas: super impressed! The process was simple, transaction seamless. We had an amazing time! Couldn’t be happier! 😍
It works!
Ok at this point I've attended a reservation purchased on AT by a friend and sold a reservation personally. Both worked pretty smoothly, nothing sketchy about it. A few areas for improvement including a way to more directly communicate between buyers and sellers, but the app always seems to be in development. AT customer support is really(!) responsive and helpful too if you have questions!
Money transfer
As a seller, I like the fact i have the ability now to transfer money out of my AT account and into a bank account. Makes getting the money much easier then the process before.
Love this app
Got to go to places otherwise unreachable
Easy Access
Very easy to get into one of the hardest restaurants to reserve in New York.
Whose name will my reservation be under when I arrive at the venue?
It can be under your name or a name you choose! Some reservation offers already include the AppointmentTrader Transfer Service which will transfer the reservation in to your name. If its not included you can add it on after buying the reservation for a small fee. One thing on that though: As many reservations become available at last minute, taking a reservation in someone else name is quick and great for privacy. Most reservations on AT are listed with a virtual phone number, so all you need to do is present the phone number at the hostess stand and you are good to go!
Payouts Blocked Because of Sell Through Rate
Does anyone know how AT plans to handle cases where a seller is quitting the platform but has a sell through rate <25%? The error message I got said to fill more bids or find other ways to increase the rate.
Is AT really going to block sellers from withdrawing their money? Especially revenue made before the sell through rate was introduced??
Tune into NBC News - Top Story Tonight 7:40p ET
Let’s go. Get more people placing bids!
I will give you 50% of ALL of my PROFITS if you teach me how to make profits?
LOL. Thank you The New Yorker.
Appointment
Transferring reservations is not supported in AT. Why not just use the name in the AT screenshot?
Buyers interested in Bern's Steakhouse: PLEASE READ
Same goes for 4 Charles and I Sodi
Prepaid Reservation Fee
Agreed. Ultimately not addressing this month after month is clearly resulting in a drop in certain venue’s rankings & sales.
Congrats on 3 mil
🍾🍾🍾🍾🍾🍾🧨🧨🧨 now on to 30 mill!
Need to cancel a bid, not getting a response… how do I do it?
Click on "Take off the Market Option" in your portfolio
Working on your bid?
Your bid has been “matched” with a reservation. From the time a reservation has been located, the seller of the reservation must connect with moderator to give transfer information for reservation. If the seller;however, does NOT respond to reservation transfer, then your bid is reprocessed and returns to the first step, which is connecting your request to a reservation.
Process after bid is accepted.
Hey @EvocativeFold67, welcome to appointmenttrader! Once the reservation is in your portfolio, you definitely own the timeslot, the review team would not have approved the trade if the reservation wasn't confirmed - so you are going :-) Judging from your post you bid today and are going tomorrow - don't worry as long as you initiated the name transfer, you are good - the transfer service has to work with the opening hours of the reservation team of the respective venue. You will likely see the transfer confirmation a couple hours before your reservation time.
Where do the Reservations on AppointmentTrader come from?
Mostly from people who don't need their reservations or appointments any longer. AT has no relationship with places listed and acts as a platform connecting buyers and sellers making sure that listed reservations are real and that privacy is not compromised when transacting.
What happens if my bid expires unanswered?
Hey @FluffyStar64, thanks for the question! When you place your bid the amount gets transferred in a deposit account, the second you either cancel your bid or a few minutes after the bid expires the funds are moved back into your main account from where you can refund it to your payment method or use for other transactions.
