Steak lovers beware!
I ordered the Wagu Ribeye, medium rare…Expensive to say the least, however… The server comes back and informs me the chef will only cook it to “medium temp” and not any lower…I was like, What?? I don’t like drama, but I was speechless for 3 seconds… So, to get a steak at medium rare, I had to “pay an extra $7” for a New York Strip. I hesitated but caved… BIG mistake! 1st, Ribeye is a better tasting cut due to fat content (IMO) just tastier all around, and then 2nd I “caved” to what likely was an upsell…I should have switched altogether. I mean what chef will NOT do medium rare for a requesting customer? I’ve heard chefs won’t do “well done temp” and rightly so. The NY strip was tepid/slightly warm when it arrived, and tough to chew…and $79…for a smallish, already sliced steak that was on taste/texture level of a Sam Seltzers steak. Rest of the meal was good and wife loved her meal, however that was my first and last visit as I was very disappointed in my steak!

It’s restaurant is amazing ! Start to finish it’s the best. Our server Devin was great , attentive and knowledgeable with a great sense of humor. Cocktails to start and a Super Tuscan to go with dinner. Charcuterie board was the best , great cheeses and meats with a spicy pork pâté that we all Loved. The Oxtail main course is good , I was salivating for days in anticipation!! Zeppole and Affogato for dessert with espresso and Amaretto to finish a perfect meal !! Do your self a favor and go !! Friday and Saturday definitely plan ahead and make a reservation.
Be the first to ReplyAn excellent tasting menu that’s full of flavor
Chef de Cuisine Sheridan Scott helmed the kitchen staff to a perfect finish—a visually pleasing, fresh, and flavorful meal. It was great to watch the chefs not only handle the exacting details of a chef’s table but also the rest of the restaurant and its al la carte menu. Surprisingly I enjoyed the mackerel, but my favorite was by far the truffle risotto (with the uncharged alba truffle shavings). Close seconds were the Dungeness Crab and the unique Hokkaido scallops. It’s a busy restaurant but the service was always on point and pleasant. The Chef’s table is the way to go for a creative and tasty meal (celebratory or not), in the heart of downtown St Petersburg.
Be the first to ReplyWhy no Michelin Star?
Tampa Schmampa. I love Tampa restaurants. But on a sleepy St. Pete street some gnarly dude hols court... his name is David Benstock. He apparently sweeps some magic wand over some exotic potions and creates stuff out of thin air. St. Pete? Yes, but Benstocks St. Pete. il Ritorno is every bit as good as Onyx in Budapest or Edvard in Vienna two of our favorites, both with Michelin stars. Benstock pays attention to flavor for sure. But also texture and temperature and weird exotic taste sensation mixes that dance off the tongue and linger for just the right amount of time. Friendly wait-staff, servers, greeters and bar personnel. (they make their own Lemncello... amazing stuff) This is not thrown together fare. The kitchen is in full view, nothing hidden. No chaos but rather an army of Kitchen culinary connoisseurs, artists actually who quietly work in tandem to make stunning dishes for anyone that is lucky enough to darken the door of this incredible intimate quiet venue. Fish & pork we had. Sounds mundane, until you taste it Benstock style. Indescribable. No words. And terrific wine list.
Be the first to ReplyGreat food worth your choice to dine here
It has been a few years since we dined at Il Ritorno on Central ave in St. petersburg. We loved this restaurant then and love this restaurant now, delicious! All food is made in house wonderful bread and pesto and whipped butter brought to the table. Service is excellent, knowledgeable and enjoyable wait staff genuinely want you to enjoy your experience. $25 corkage if you bring your own wine ( max 2 bottles). Drinks from bar are delicious and made well. The only issue I have has nothing to do with the restaurant, downtown st. petersburg has an awful parking problem. homemade foie gras lasagne as fantastic, truffle risotto delicious, short rib ravioli flavorful and not heavy beautifully delicate. Be sure to have a reservation, go early to be sure we have time to hunt for parking. Bar has seats you can dine at, outside seating available. This is a great spot!

We have been to this restaurant quite a few times. The food and service are consistently excellent The staff is highly professional and our dishes were delicious It is upscale and worth the expense
Be the first to ReplyImaginative and Tasty
This is a great spot to try an innovative take on Italian food. Everything was fresh and delicious and some familiar dishes were presented in imaginative ways. The service was great, the wine was excellent. My only complaint would be that the amount of food we got for the steep price paid was a bit disappointing. But overall, we would go again.

Four of us had a special dinner here. This small restaurant has a nice atmosphere (lively but not too loud) and fabulous food. Lena did a great job taking care of us as well. You will need reservations and parking is on the street. We started w/ a charcuterie board and ate every piece. Nice selection of meat, cheese, veggies and nuts. Enough for 4. Three of us then had the short rib mezzaluna which be is a specialty. It’s a light ravioli. One couple split a salad which they also enjoyed. I had the branzino which came w/peas and a beautiful sauce. All wonderful. We added a bottle of Chablis and two desserts (donuts and sorbet). $375 before tip. We would definitely return.

Il Ritorno had been recommended by friends and has become one of our “must go to” whenever we’re in St. Pete. Our servers were friendly, knowledgeable and attentive. The food was great! Started with Bucatini Pomodoro and a Salad. Main courses of American Wagyu Ribeye Cap and the Grouper. Shared a side of Charred Brussel Sprouts. Dessert was simple but delicious – Gelato. If you are in the area and want a special meal – go and enjoy!
Be the first to ReplyDid not meet expectations
We went for the first time recently and ordered the signature pasta and the branzino. The pasta was tasty but super salty. The branzino was disappointing as there were only 4 small branzino “chips” with assorted other seafood tidbits plated on way too much mayonnaise. Should really be prepared with the other half of the branzino moist and tender on the empty side of the plate. Very over priced for what you get.
Be the first to ReplyMight try it again
We heard this was a great restaurant and gave it a try. The service was okay. The food was a pretty good. Maybe it was an off night. We might ry it again.
Be the first to ReplyNot worth the hype !
I would have expected more but the wine was fantastic … we were super excited to go to this restaurant but super disappointed … we debated on the tasting menu 185$ … but happy we didn’t. Even the bread and butter was so so… We may have taken all the wrong dishes ( 4 in total ) but, our dish choices ended up poor at best. Maybe all the tomato dishes were the way to go? The beef tartar : almost broke a tooth on the overly deep fried zucchini flowers ( which normally we die for ) and actually now that I mention it there was way more fried vegetable then tartare (the name of the actual dish. ) There was hardly any tartar and I’m not exaggerating. The pork belly : I would basically call This a pork tenderloin over cooked. Everything around the “belly” tasted great but the piece of dried pork was no good ! But the barbera d’alba was great perfect temp !!! We had two mains and for one of them I should have known but I was super hopeful with the pasta. Short rib mezzaluna : supposed to be the house specialty : well after one bite if you can continue eating this I’m proud. Yes it’s good !!! But for one bite. This dish tries way to hard. Actually as the dish was dropped there was so much now congealed cheese you had to cut into it. It’s so rich you can’t eat it. Any real Italian would not eat this. Cheese cheese more cheese and way too much truffle oil …that’s all you could taste .You don’t even know there is short rib in the dish. And then I don’t know why I said I would go for it, but I saw so many people around me get freshly shaved truffles I decided to get it. I however said no to the 185$ white truffle version and went for what was on the menu the 85$ black truffle. I was really disappointed … Although the taste and cook of the pasta was great everything else was waaaaayyyy to rich. Butter way too much … cheese way too much .. the cheese congealed again in this dish and you could hardly taste the truffle. Anyway there were some good this about this place but not for the price. Server was great at the start but once it got busy that started to go. Wine : great selection served right Cocktails : I had a negroni and it was excellent Service : like I said great at the start but finished off very week. Food : and this is why you go there. Wasn’t good had way better for way less at this price and saying it modern Italian … there’s not much Italian except for the drinks here.
Be the first to ReplyWhere's the protein
I have eaten many times at II Ritorno and last night was the first time I was disappointed with my meal. The Octopus was great as usual but when I received my Oxtail Malfade pasta dish it literally had no beef in the dish whatsoever. The dish was literally all pasta and sauce and that was it. Also, they no longer have date night or the Monday night half off pasta night either which is very disappointing. For the prices they charge for their food you would expect they could afford to put some protein in your dish from their butcher shop they own next door. I don't think I will be returning anytime soon as there are many other options to try in Saint Pete which don't charge you a fortune.

This restaurant is amazing! The service was great and the food is incredible! Do yourself a favor and get the Oxtail !! The best I have ever had !! Appetizers, the desserts, the cocktails and wine are all 5 stars !!! Will definitely be back !!!!

We went here for our anniversary. The food was amazing and the service impeccable. Our server was Chris and he was nice, attentive and incredibly knowledgeable about the wine list.
Be the first to ReplyWow! One of the best meals I’ve had in a long time!
We met our Friends Greg and john here for a dinner that was way too long in coming. We’d tasted some of the items at a cooking demonstration in Tampa and I vowed to go there - sadly that was before COVID if memory serves. The setting is rustic but totally fine. I’d like to shout out to Gabrielle who was our server. She very clearly knew the menu inside out and the tasting menu with accompanying wine was worth every penny. There are GF options available (I don’t need them but nowadays it’s become an important element). The tasting menu had 8 courses and each one was better than the next. There were caviar items, delicious pasta and yummy Wagyu. Run don’t walk to I’ll Ritorno. Don’t be like me and wait way too long.
Be the first to ReplyDate night fail
Tried Il Ritorno since listed as a great date night venue and love downtown St Pete. Menu boasted grilled octopus (which we love) and risotto which my wife loves and makes. What a disappointment. Had the hamachi collar special and grilled octopus appetizers. My sense of smell is not great, but the fish smell of the hamachi was not good. The grilled octopus was overcharred and gritty (clean your grill). Wasn't going to say anything but the waiter asked how we liked them and I was upfront with him. He apologized but no one else there cared. Next up was truffle risotto and short rib mezaluna. Meal came out within 10 to 15 minutes of ordering and both my wife and I were very concerned since risotto takes a good 25 minutes to cook. The risotto had the texture of wallpaper paste since obviously precooked and reheated ($50!). The mezaluna was excellent but we sent the risotto back and reordered the shrimp cappallini for her. The cappallini was mediocre. No management bothered to speak to us even though there were obvious issues. I dont like to complain about meals and try not to post bad reviews but the booking site (tock) sent me an email and when I responded with a frowny face and posted a moderately negative review it kicked it back and wouldnt accept it saying I had already responded. I did but didnt post the issues we encountered previously. So I am posting a review on trip Advisor on how I really felt about this $200+ meal for two. Great ambience, good bread and good wine, otherwise would have given it 1 star or zero if possible. Any restaurant can have a bad meal or two, but this place did not care that our experience was not good and therefore we will not go back.
