Nice, lively, and bustling Szechuan restaurant in the heart
Nice, lively, and bustling Szechuan restaurant in the heart of Chinatown. The street that it's on isn't the most well kept, but when you get to the restaurant it clearly stands out from its surroundings with its bright and clean facade - a diamond in the rough. We were welcomed by the friendly staff, noted our reservation, and were led to a table on the second floor up a staircase lined with beautiful lilies. I started with an Old Fashioned cocktail which was the low of the evening for me - wasn't well made and overly sweet - so I switched to TsingTao beer after. The food and service was great. I highly recommend the Beijing duck. Everyone clearly comes to this restaurant for it and I had to try. We got the half duck for 2 people and the waitress asks if you want to take a picture before she starts carving it up at the table. We also ordered the shrimp dumplings, bok choy, and a spicy tofu and pork dish. Everything was delicious. I also discovered that this restaurant is Michelin starred which wasn't surprising given the great food, but what was surprising was that everything was reasonably priced - appetizers are in the $12 range, Beijing duck for 2 is $45, and most entrees are in the $30 range. However, Cocktails were expensive at $20 each and not the best tasting so I'd recommend just going with beer or wine. Overall, I would definitely recommend checking this place out. Appears to get very busy on a Friday night so I'd recommend making a reservation.

Tasty food! Can't go wrong with the Ma Po Tofu or the duck, staff is very nice and accommodating. Ambiance is very fancy, very nice decoration. If you've got room for it.. try the chocolate cake.
Be the first to ReplyA fancyish Chinese restaurant.
Got the duck, crispy beef, scallion pancake, beef chow fun, and soup dumplings. Everything was ok nothing special. There's much better places in Chinatown. Service was good and everything came out quick. Honestly this place reminded me of any number of generic American Chinese restaurants just with a much higher price.

Very thoughtfully prepared, somewhat idiosyncratic styled Szechuanese dishes. Very good Peking duck also, reflecting the chef's personalized view on the dish. Pleasant ambiance, good service. A pleasure each time.
Be the first to ReplyFirst class Beijing duck and service.
Best meal we had in Chinatown area, worth the walk.

Fantastic service. Food was delicious. Special occasion place as it is very expensive. $175 for 2 people and we only had 1 cocktail each and no dessert.
Be the first to ReplyPricey, definitely pricey for what you get.
And the food isn't even great. The service was attentive, the seats were nice, good ambience. Disappointingly, the veggie was too old, the peking duck was average and the beef dish was just salty. I wanted to like the place but I don't.

My favorite Chinese place in the city! Service is always good and the food is delicious. Duck is super tasty, the crispy beef is soooo good. The green beans... incredible. Love the shrimp fried rice too. Oh the hot and sour soup? Also delicious. I guess you could say I haven't had a bad dish here. I also LOVE the lychee martinis here, one of my favorites. I honestly think this place is better than Mr. Chow. Can't wait to come back.

Regular wait staff was friendly and food was great (if a bit overpriced), but the maitre'd / head waiter who "took care" of us rushed us through our meal and hovered to push us through each course or pushed the staff to do so when there was NOT A SINGLE OTHER TABLE on the floor during our entire meal. It was Christmas Eve and we specifically booked an early 2:30p reservation to avoid the crowds. I could understand if they were squeezing us in under the wire before a booked first seating or even if they needed to diplomatically close out our check to take care of a waitstaff turnover, but the waitstaff was on for the entire afternoon night and the room was still empty (we're talking 30+ empty tables) when we left! The gruff and unwelcoming treatment basically ruined the vibe of our family Christmas Eve dinner--by one employee who somehow has risen to the level of floor captain but has no clue or training in restaurant hospitality, or how to manage table turning smartly and graciously (any captain worth their salt could have seen by our order pacing and eating that they could have relaxed a bit and let us enjoy our meal without jeopardizing their next seating). Love the food at Hwa Yuan, but we can go elsewhere for the same quality or at least pay much less to be treated so rudely.

I was here for lunch and ordered dry sautéed beef, hot and sour soup, baby bok choy and spring rolls. I lived in Hong Kong for several years as a kid and these dishes have been favorites my whole life. The dry sautéed beef and hot and sour soup were A+! Fantastic! But the bok choy and spring rolls were lacking flavor. The prices were definitely high but worth it for the soup and sautéed beef. (I would suggest asking the server for what is good. I wouldn't be surprised if the rest of the menu was a little on both sides: very good or boring). We even bought soup to go to eat later. (It was THAT good!) The service was attentive and friendly and the restaurant was elegant and comfortable.
Be the first to ReplyWe dined at this restauant onSaturday night.
The waitress was told to serve us the lo mein seafood dish prior to the other dishes that weordered. She ignored us and served it last. The dish was cold and tasteless. My lobster with ginger and scallions was defrosted and the water wasrunning into the awful sauce. The lobster had no flavor and there wereno pieces that had much lobster in the shells. The shrimp dumplings were were also frozen and had no flavor. The lobster with ginger and scallion cost $98. It is a travesty that this restaurant serves frozen food at prices fit for a king. i would not recommend this restaurant nor would I ever return.

The food is pricey relative to other Chinese restaurants in NYC, but was quite delicious. Highlight was Peking duck, which we asked for some baos in addition to the thing wrappers, which they delivered onWe also had steamed whole fish which we were not a fan of, the texture was a bit off compared to a sea bass, flounder, etc that is traditionally used in steamed fishDongpo pork was quite authentic. Would prefer going to a more traditional restaurant in Flushing or South Manhattan, but worth the trip if you're in a pinch in the area

What a lovely experience! Made a lunch reservation and got the Peking duck, "amazing" wine chicken lol, crispy beef and okra/gai lan, which was so fresh and crisp. Service was so friendly and engaged and helped make a special occasion meal really fun :)

Upscale Chinese restaurant perfect for entertaining! Huge menu with very outstanding dishes including their Beijing Duck. Everything is well presented and delicious.Service is good and waiters are very attentive - sometimes too attentive they want to change my plate too often Anyways this is definitely a place worth coming back to try different dishes!
Be the first to ReplyAn overpriced Chinese restaurant geared towards Caucasian
An overpriced Chinese restaurant geared towards Caucasian population and offers Americanized (non authentic-Chinese) food. I am a Chinese person and felt discriminated against at the restaurant by their Chinese staff. First of all, the front desk lady was thrown off and a bit rude when I called to make a reservation in Chinese. And when I walked in I was the only Chinese person in the restaurant, everyone else was white, that's usually not a good sign if you are looking for authentic Chinese food. And the worst of all, one waiter pretended he couldn't speak Chinese to me but later I heard him speaking it to others, and when I asked him for recommendation for authentic Chinese food, his response was "we are American Chinese food, not Chinese Chinese food, that doesn't exist anyways." - well, a racist and untrue statement - there are plenty of authentic Chinese food in the city; and their food later proves hid first half of the statement - the $20 sesame noodle that uses a secret sauce from 1968 tasted nothing special than the $2 one around the corner, the signature Peking duck was very tough and didn't seem fresh, the dry beef appetizer was overly sweet and you can just get that at Panda Express.Overall, if you are looking for good atmosphere and high quality service and prefer Panda Express over authentic Chinese food, this is the place to be, oh, and you have to be white coz they don't really welcome Chinese people. Two people came out to be $100 with no drinks.
Be the first to ReplyTerrible experience, the service was absolutely awful.
I brought out of town guest here and was mortified that one of my favorites was such a disaster.
Be the first to ReplyGood food.
Terrible service. Hostess was rude and dismissive even though we had reservations. They seated us in the basement. Took us one hour to get our APPETIZERS. When we asked their excuse was "we're busy." A lot of the servers are nice, but the hostesses were terrible. Ultimately the owners are to blame, not the staff, for booking reservations WAY over capacity in order to maximize profits at the expense of their customers and staff. Will not come back.

As good as I remember! Used to go with my families as far back as the 70's. Unparalleled Cold noodles with sesame sauce. This Chinese food is on a different level.

Charged Full Price for Reduced Portions. Under-Cooked Food. And a terrible way to start the New Year.5 Part Review: 1) Getting Seated. 2) Food & Drinks. 3) Bill. 4) Previous Visit Experience. 5) Obnoxious Party of 20+ People*** I want to preface that this was a solid 7.5/10 restaurant (good for NYC standards) based on my previous experience. Overpriced food so assume you are paying for the ambience and the lack of good, reasonably priced Chinese restaurants in Manhattan. By definition, this is not a "high end" restaurant, so not sure why some people are calling it that. I DO NOT RECOMMEND this place for holiday meals. ***1) I had a Yelp reservation for 5 people at 7:30pm on Saturday, 1/21/23. They clearly overbooked which is UNACCEPTABLE because it's not the 1st time they had a reservation issue (look at Xmas and Thanksgiving day reviews). IF HWA YUAN CANNOT FIX THIS ISSUE, THEY NEED TO TAKE WALK-IN ONLY, especially for holidays. When we arrived, no one was at the front taking down names and checking in reservations. And they were not able to give our table an ETA. We arrived at 7:35pm and were not seated until about 8:15pm. About 40 minute wait. I heard that other parties waited over 1 hour though. 2) They sold out of our 1st choice beef dish which is fine but it's unacceptable that they REDUCED the portions for 2 of our main dishes. And the rice was bad. It was over cooked and mushed together. Our 1st dish, 2 bowls of Chili Wontons, did not arrive until 8:50pm (35 min after we were seated). It tasted like vinegar and was not spicy (not as good as last time I visited). Scallops with Mushrooms and Fillet of Veal came out between 9:10-9:22pm. Scallops were fried instead of sautéed. They clearly reduced the portions to 1-person serving for these 2 dishes. Last time I visited the scallop & mushroom dish and all other main dishes were appropriately family-sized. Even though the portions were small, we did not finish the scallop and veal dishes because they tasted so bad. Only the duck and fillet of sole came out appropriately sized because it was whole. Fried fish was tasty, and the only edible dish. The Beijing duck arrived last at 9:40pm. The skin was not crispy and the server did not cut the duck completely (like they did last time I visited). The wraps for the duck smelled and felt like under-cooked tortillas. We told the waiter the wraps were undercooked and pretty sure he just microwaved it. So Peking Duck dish was just duck because the wraps were so bad we couldn't eat them. We finished dinner at about 10pm. During this 2 hour process, we could not order water because they ran out of cups. So we were forced to order beer and soda. Cups for water became available some time after 9:40pm but some of the glasses were still dirty (one had a lipstick stain on it). We honestly considered going outside to buy some bottles of water. 3) Our total bill was $319.01 which is totally unreasonable. Why are we being charged for beer and soda when we could not get water? Portions for the Veal and Scallops dishes were reduced, so bill for those 2 items should ALSO be reduced. Items 1-5 equates to $241, so I assume the $78 remaining is from drinks, rice, and tax...1. Whole Beijing Duck 北京鴨 = $802. Fillet of Sole Sautéed with Salt & Spicy Pepper 椒鹽麻辣魚片 = $523. Scallops Sautéed with Mushrooms 干貝釀花菇 = $484. Fillet of Veal with XO Sauce 香炒小牛柳 = $37 5. Wonton with Chili Sauce 紅油炒手 = $12 (ordered 2x)6. 3 beers, and 2 Sprites7) 3 bowls of rice Website prices are outdated so not sure if these prices are correct either... 4) I've been to Hwa Yuan once before and ordered several dishes including the Beijing Duck, Chili Wontons, and Scallops with Mushrooms. Food is a little over-priced IMO. The duck was the best dish and probably one of the better ones in NYC. Skin was crispier and fattier/juicier than Uluh's. Recommend this restaurant only for the Beijing Duck.5) Obnoxious Party of 20+ People. I saw the birthday boy harassing the hostess and felt alarmed for her. I wish they had refused service for this party because they took up 3/4 of the front room. They were obnoxiously loud and rude to the waiters and made dinner very painful for my party. I could barely hear my friend seated next to me. And my ears were ringing after dinner. The table next to ours did not seem happy with their seating either.
Be the first to ReplyWould give 0 stars if I could- the most disappointing
Would give 0 stars if I could- the most disappointing dining experience I've ever had!To start- there is no reservation system; so hoards of guests were expected to stand and wait in the front/middle of the restaurant for about an hour for their tables (despite making reservations weeks in advance). Each party being repeatedly told "just one moment" when inquiring about approximate wait time. Once we were eventually seated, we ordered drinks and waited patiently for an additional 2.5 hours before being told that they had run out of several dishes we ordered. We then watched a table that had been seated about an hour after us be served those very dishes! Instead of apologizing for the apparent mix up, our server laughed at us. Not a single staff member could offer us an explanation or apology for the absolutely abysmal service we received. Our party of 8 left after almost 4 hours, still starving, having only been served a few small appetizers in all that time. I have eaten at Hwa Yuan before and was excited to bring friends to celebrate the Lunar New Year. This experience was nothing short of embarrassing and has ensured that none of us will be dining there again. Save your time and money and go absolutely anywhere else.
Be the first to ReplyLove the restaurant.
Nicely designed inside. Unlike many other spots In Chinatown that look old on inside, not here. When I entered, it was between lunch and dinner. The staff was all eating their meal. I was seated at a nice table. After viewing menu, I decided to skip soup and appetizer as the cost was expensive. Late found the jasmine tea was $10 for the pot. The chicken was amazing but portion was small. This is a very nice place but for the money elsewhere in Chinatown would have had more food. In fact, I left here to go somewhere else to eat as I was still hungry.

Exceeded all my expectations! We came in as a group of 6 amd got the multi course prix fix with Peking duck, which I've heard so much about and was eager to try. I've had Peking duck in Beijing before and have had a difficult time finding a place in New York that 1) served it and 2) served it well.Without going through all the dishes in full detail I just wanna say this: yes, this is a Chinese restaurant in Chinatown that's priced a bit higher than others in the neighborhood, but first off, Chinese food is not a monolith and there IS such thing as Chinese fine dining, and second there's really nothing else like this in Chinatown. you are getting extremely well executed dishes that nod respectfully to their roots, but also Chinese American dishes like orange chicken...in a way that is so quintessentially Chinese American, true to Shorty Tang and his legacy. And real quick: the Peking duck was the bomb. I've never had it served with pear(?) as a filling ingredient but it worked so beautifully to cut the fat from the duck. My only nitpick would be the wrappers could have been thinner, but honestly everything else blew me away so it didn't bother me all that much!Highly recommend!
Be the first to ReplyBeen here twice to enjoy the Peking Duck both whole and
Been here twice to enjoy the Peking Duck both whole and half portions on two separate occasions along with other items like the spicy tofu and cold sesame noodles. The first time was a better experience with table side Peking Duck carved hot in front of us with crepes, slices of pear, onions and hoisin sauce. The staff there was interactive, explaining the different portions of the duck and were excited to share this experience with patrons that visit their establishment. We enjoyed the crispy skin of the duck first, then moved on to the dark and white meat of the duck both juicy and delicious. The cold sesame noodles had this rich sauce that kept every bite slurped tasty. The spicy tofu was a stark contrast to that cold dish with meaty flavor with spice to join in the fun.We didn't grab any drinks as we enjoyed all the food there. Departed with leftovers to enjoy for dinner. The lunch time wasn't a bad time to go to check this out before bringing our Dad there for his birthday.Fast forward to my Dad's Birthday, we were excited to bring them here to enjoy the food that we enjoyed above. We stuck with the same items along with large shrimp fried rice, braised ox tail and seafood pan fried angel hair noodles. There were expectations that were set that the Duck would be out after some of the food came out. Starting with the tried and true sesame noodles and tofu, the meal was beginning pretty well. After those two dishes the service went downhill quick. We were prepared to wait for the Duck, again carved table side with the fixings and we were able to fill ourselves with that because after that the rest of the food didn't come out so timely. We were informed that a dish was not available for the day by one staff member just for it to arrive a little while later after we ordered a substitute dish. With everyone running around, we luckily was able to cancel that dish. All the dishes were enough to fill us up pretty well. Then we waited for the last dish the oxtail. I was excited to have oxtail; not many places can pull it off well. But wait we did....empty dishes were removed and we continued to wait...we asked about the dish and it was always its going to be right out...but we waited and waited. When we had finally decided to ask for the dish to be taken off the bill as we wanted to leave, we were unable to get the attention of any of the staff members; with an empty table aside from tea cups and a last few dishes, it looked like we were wrapped up with our meal but now it was a question of whether we would be able to pay the bill or get this long overdue oxtail that we had ordered. The oxtail ended up coming out, four pieces with hardly any meat on the bone in a filled plate of sauce. Luckily we had ordered an extra set of crepes with the Peking Duck to enjoy with it as it didn't come with much besides what I had described. I would say that dish was best for one person to enjoy, not a shareable dish at all. Most of the dishes you could at least share but with oxtail that isn't the case. I would suggest a serving size to inform dining parties that this wasn't a family style dish, which is traditional of Asian restaurants to share and pass food around. It was busier than the first time we went here and we were prepared to wait for our order but that last dish was not worth price and wait. You are best sticking with the Peking Duck, any starch dish and a few other dishes for your large gatherings. If you have a good communication with the wait staff, they can hopefully direct you to dishes that work better for certain party sizes.Enjoy!
