Honestly the food kind of sucked but I'm giving it four
Honestly the food kind of sucked but I'm giving it four stars because of the cool vibes and the fact that they let me and my two friend chat for like three hours without chasing us out. Whatever that cauliflower dish was, don't get it with meat because it tasted like they literally used cardboard. None of us were able to bite through it, lol. The noodles were fine though, and was the only thing that I could really eat. Probably wouldn't return.

Americanized Chinese food that's pretty cheap! If you're looking for a quick meal and something like general tso's then go for it. Otherwise, lots of other authentic Chinese spots close by to eat at.

Friendly staff, food supposed to be spicy but wasn't spicy at all, clean interior. I don't see myself returning again

I got takeout from Postmates, so this review is just about the food. The dumplings were too doughy so they didn't taste like quality dumplings; the dumplings were probably from a bad in the freezer. The genesis chicken was pretty standard and well cooked and it came with a generous side of rice. It's a good place to rely on when you don't feel like going out but don't want to cook. It's cheap and it fills you up.

The szechuan beef was way too dry and the other dishes weren't that great either. I liked that the beers were only $5.
Be the first to ReplyMy standards for American Chinese food and non American
My standards for American Chinese food and non American Chinese food are very different. Unfortunately, given its name, I was expecting some super delicious authentic Chinese food!I got the crispy shrimp which wasn't bad but it wasn't amazing for almost 22 dollars. The Hunan beef tasted very Americanized. I should've read the menu more carefully as I'm not really a huge fan of water chestnuts. I would order from here again but with a different mindset. This was more a 3.5 than a 3!
Be the first to ReplyThis was the worst general tsao chicken I've ever had.
it was more of a sweet-and-sour than a spicy sauce Sauce looks like that duck sauce that you buy from the grocery store Chicken was tough Best part about this entire meal was the Brown rice recommend never
Be the first to ReplyI went to this Hunan restaurant with one of my usual groups
I went to this Hunan restaurant with one of my usual groups though with a different host than usual. Hunan food tends to have a sour heat to it and the rather expansive menu here appears to also include some American Chinese dishes and some of the poor reviews are regarding them so perhaps go there for Hunan food. He hadn't been here in a while and this was one of the spots he hosted. We spent maybe around 30 or 35 bucks a person or something similar for a good amount of food.We started with the Scallion Pancakes. They were alright. Could have been a bit crispier but it was OK. We also had the Ox Tongue and Tripe with Spicy Peppery Sauce or more directly translated as husband and wife slices which is one of the cheekier Chinese dish names. The sauce had a good amount of mala and I liked the texture of the offal so I would recommend it. My favorite of the smaller dishes was the Green Pepper With Preserved Egg also known as smashed chilies with century egg. I personally like century eggs a lot and it went quite well with the crunchy pepper and I'm happy that this place unlike some of the newer fancy Hunan places doesn't expect people to mash them up together themselves (even if it is fun.)One of the first main dishes that arrived was the Jumbo Shrimp With Spicy Garlic Sauce. This was one of the better main dishes with pretty tender tasty shrimp though the sauce could have been a bit more flavorful. Mao's Red Braised Pork Belly was a solid version. Nicely tender pork and properly cooked down though I had definitely preferred other versions more as though I did like that the pieces were on the smaller end which made it very easy to split it. The Sauteed Lamb With Red Pepper and Cilantro was also just alright. The lamb was a bit gummy though the sour sauce definitely helped with the off texture. The Beef With Pickled Cabbage was also pretty good. The chili sauce as with the other Hunan dishes had a good little sourness to it but yet again the protein wasn't the best. Of the dishes, the weakest ones were the vegetarian ones which was surprising based on the best appetizer. The Hunan Cauliflower was bland compared to many of the other Hunan or Sichuan spots lacking texture also. The Steamed Eggplant With Salted Egg Yolk was well terrible. It wasn't properly cooked with the mixture basically falling off of the eggplant leaning it to be a salty mess which was also just not well flavored. The Hunan food here was alright. Portion sizes were plenty big but there's definitely better places for Hunan food or food from similar regions in the city. Particularly good appetizers of all things but the main dishes needed work (especially the proteins which tasted cheap or poor quality in many cases.) I do wish we got a preserved pork dish to compare also.
Be the first to ReplyFirst time ever trying this place.
The service was SUPER FAST! I tried the pork dumpling with chili sauce and the vegetable egg roll, and they were both delicious. I asked for the chili sauce on the side just in case it was too spicy but it was just right. They're not shaped like your traditional dumpling which was a nice surprise. I'm sure they make their dough in house for their dumplings because they tasted very fresh. They had the perfect amount of filling and had some fresh scallions on top. The rolls were so perfectly crunchy on the outside and soft and flavorful on the inside. It came with a duck sauce on the side too. It was very nice inside too. The music they had was at a perfect level and the workers aren't coming to your table every minute or two. 100% recommend this place. Will be coming back soon.
Be the first to ReplyFood looked great when I received it.
Soon found two pieces of clear plastic, should have stopped eating it. I ended up having stomachache. I ordered from them several times. It's sad that happened...
Be the first to ReplyMost of my experience of this place has been takeout.
I usually order the mapo tofu, bamboo pork, and hunan fried rice. The hunan fried rice is delicious. Unlike any fried rice I've had from other restaurants. It has a bold and smokey flavor while the red peppers give it plenty of heat. Sometimes I'll pick out the peppers because it can be a bit much. You can ask them to make it less spicey and they accommodate. In contrast, I've ordered the same exact order from Mee Noodle on 1st Ave, and it was a big disappointment. The only thing I liked better from Mee Noodle is their lo mein and their dumplings. I live about 1.5-2 miles from this place, and they deliver fast. I never waited more than 30 minutes from the time I order until the time I receive the food.

You have to try their signature dish, the chili fish head was amazingly flavorful and tender, honestly a lot more decadent than I was expecting.

We were the only people eating in the restaurant at the time. Should have realized that it was a red flag. Food is EXTREMELY SALTY!!! The ingredients used is not fresh. I ordered the beef in the picture and the texture is extremely weird. I asked the waiter which part of beef it is. He said he doesn't know. The dish has funky taste. Do not recommend this restaurant.
Be the first to ReplyGreat, tasty food.
Ordered takeout and the delivery was super quick...within 10 mins of placing the order I had received the food!! The lo mein with vegetables was tasty- it had some sauce and wasn't dry and it actually had vegetables besides broccoli and onions. The sesame chicken was great too- the chicken was juicy on the inside and fried perfectly, the sauce was tasty and had a little kick to it. The portion sizes were plentiful and the food was tasty. Great neighborhood spot for when you get a hankering for some Chinese food!

I think I like this place a little too much but it just hits the spot when you need takeout Chinese food! They have been consistently tasty and really affordable, especially with their lunch specials. I usually get the shredded pork with bamboo shoots. The pork lo mein is great as well. The dishes can be a bit oily it's part of the Americanized Chinese food experience for me. The hostess in the front is really nice and overall results in a pleasant experience.
Be the first to ReplySauteed Preserved Pork w.
Dried Turnips and beef with pickled cabbage. On time delivery and not your typical Americanized version of Chinese food. Very well spiced and more meat than vegetables. The spicing seemed to be more like you would get in China.
Be the first to ReplyThe scallion pancakes, cold sesame noodles, and vegetable
The scallion pancakes, cold sesame noodles, and vegetable fried rice were all really good! The vegetable dumplings were ok, but I'm very picky when it comes to these. They weren't bad, but I wouldn't order them again. I would definitely order the other three items again and order from here next time I'm craving Chinese food.
Be the first to ReplyMy husband and I wanted different things today.
He wanted pizza and I wanted rice noodle. He got his one slice of pizza and I decided to come to this place, and oh boy, that was a bad decision. We did not see a sign that says no outside food so we went ahead and went into the restaurant. We ordered a bowl of rice noodle soup and started sharing it. After realizing it was not good, we went ahead to start eating the slice of pizza. We were able to almost finished our food when the server all of a sudden came up to us and said that the owner is watching us on the security camera and he told us that we are not allowed to have outside food and the owner was going to kick us out but he's going to let it slide this one time. It made us very uncomfortable and embarrassed. If they didn't want us to have outside food then they can have a sign or they can tell us at the very beginning or wait until we are done with the meal since we were almost done anyway. But they chose to ruin our experience by threatening us and making us feel uncomfortable. We could have just gone to a different place and not buy anything here. And obviously they'd rather not have any business than us being there. It just comes down to poor customer service. When asking the server whether the owner was actual watching or actually wanted to kick us out, he started mumbling which looked like he was just making things up to scare us. As for the food itself, bland. It's a meh and an easy pass.
Be the first to ReplyIt's a crime that this place has such a low rating.
On the plus side, it means no wait for a table! Mao's red braised pork belly and the string beans are my one of my favorite meals in this city.
Be the first to ReplyCUSTOMERS PLEASE BE AWARE: see comment 2 below.
1. Food was tasty but could have got the same exact dish for less elsewhere. I ordered the Jumbo shrimp with broccoli for $20.95 Taste of this food was nothing special nor worth that cost. Way over priced. Could have gotten this exact meal at other nearby restaurants for $5 - $7 less depending on if your ordering a lunch special or dinner. 2. I ordered online and picked up my food in person. My order was ready when I got there with my invoice / receipt stapled to it. Please be aware that all of your credit card information is on that invoice / receipt. CC number, the CCV number which is the three digit # on the back of your card, and your name. I find this to be a security issue for customers including myself at Hunan Bistro located at the 96 third avenue location. This business does not have a clue on how to protect their customers personal information. CUSTOMERS PLEASE BE AWARE!!!!!

So good!! Got the potato slivers with vinegar sauce and stir fried green beans. Comfort food at its best, especially with the wok hei flavor. Green beans are blistered and garlic-y. Yum!!
Be the first to ReplyMy food was delicious BUT I definitely got food poisoning
My food was delicious BUT I definitely got food poisoning after eating here and have been sick for two days now. Very unfortunate considering I really enjoyed my meal. I ordered chicken fried rice , and an order of the broccoli in spicy garlic sauce.
Be the first to ReplySolid Chinese food.
General Tsos chicken was very good! Lo mein was a little bland but I did like that there were extra veggies in it. I would order again.
