Beautiful hotel in beautiful setting. Luxurious, but missing the basics. We stayed in superior room, it was lovely, a nice size, very comfortable, beautifully decorated, nice views of the garden, albeit covered by scaffolding during our visit. Easy to check in, and the room was spacious and beautifully decorated. We did notice almost immediately the lack of a fridge. So queried this and was told they need to be requested ahead of time. That seemed a little odd to us. There was a very large illuminated decorative cabinet with water and an ice bucket, but no ice machine to be found anywhere. I’m not sure why they’d prioritise this illuminated cabinet over something more functional like a fridge! For dinner we wanted to order room service but there was no menu in the room, so we went down to reception to be told to do it on the tablet in the room, turns out we didn’t have one. The receptionist said that’s probably because it’s broken, they don’t always work, and she rounded up some menus for us to take up to our room. A few hours later we ordered food to the room, and were told it’d take around 30 minutes. An hour later my husband goes down to enquire and told “sorry, the order didn’t get put through, we’ll do it now and prioritise it”. They also comped 50% for the inconvenience. The food did arrive very quickly after the second order, but arrived with no salt & pepper, and my husband got a dirty napkin. My husband opted for fish and chips which was very oily. I opted for chicken flatbread which was very tasty, and the chips that came with it were the clear winner of both meals. A few other oddities about the room: there are no plug sockets or USB charging points next to the bed, which whilst only mildly inconvenient for me not to have my devices next to me, could prove wildly more than inconvenient if you rely on powered medical equipment whilst sleeping. There’s nowhere to hang a coat that isn’t wardrobe - which means you can’t hang them when wet, and it’s in England so there’s always potential for rain, and we did experience this inconvenience! There was no soap in the bathroom, we had to use shower gel to wash our hands. The shower gel, shampoo and conditioner, weren’t all the same brand. It was a nice touch with anti-fog section of mirror, though no good if you’re shorter than 5’5! It is a dog friendly hotel with dedicated dog-dining room so furry friends can join for dinner/ breakfast and plenty of room for them to run off-lead. We also spotted a secure dog run, but didn’t use this ourselves. Owners do have to sign a “good behaviour” agreement, which is brilliant in theory, but not so good when it’s not enforced, sadly the dog in the room next to us was quite noisy throughout the night, so we didn’t get the best night sleep. Which was a shame as the bed was very comfortable and the pillows fluffed to perfection! It would have been a nice touch to have some towels for dogs available if it’s raining out since they specify not to use the human towels on dogs, which is fair but if, like us, you didn’t have a towel with you (we left ours at crufts!), there’s no way to dry off the dog! It did say in the welcome there were dog treats in the room but we didn’t find them. Breakfast was another miss for us. There was no sugar tongs in the open sugar bowl so dread to think how many fingers have been in that. I ordered smashed avocado on toast and my husband ordered eggs royale. My plate arrived with a hair on it, and eggs more akin to very hard boiled so I sent it back. I think it was a manager that I asked and he didn’t offer an apology, just took my plate with a nod of the head. My husbands eggs were also overcooked, so we summised they are probably cooked earlier and left on a hot plate, which obviously results in overcooking. My second plate of food was redeemed and came with an apology from the manager but it meant I didn’t eat with my husband, rather 10 minutes after he had finished. When checking out I was asked about my stay so gave them our feedback, and they took it well, which I was happy about, as often staff are trained to ask this but not really care. I got the impression they really did care, but I’m not sure they agreed it wasn’t usual practice to have to ask for a fridge! All of the little things in isolation we likely wouldn’t have noticed, but they all added up to something being not quite right. It feels as if they’ve put in all the “extras” of being a beautiful luxury hotel but haven’t yet mastered the basics. If I went in expecting it to be a little bit odd, I’d have enjoyed my stay. So I would return, but if I did it would be with altered expectations!
