I've been to Himalayan Yak twice now and left both times
I've been to Himalayan Yak twice now and left both times feeling glad I went! I like being able to have a mixture of Nepalese and Indian food, especially when it's done well, like at this spot. The service is attentive but not overly so. There's a fair amount of Nepalese decor hanging, which creates a nice ambiance. There are many great Nepalese spots in the area, and I think this one is worth checking out.
Be the first to ReplyAfte long day at work, I came for dinner.
It was the best decision I made. Food 5/5, service 5/5 and place 5/5. Felt at home. Thank you guys...
Be the first to ReplyThe Momos here are the real deal.
The chicken was my favorite since it was full of flavor and moist. The beef ones in chili were also excellent with the chili, but I like the taste of the chicken better between the two. The pork fried rice and the shaptak beef is really good together. The taste was also there for the rice and beef sauce was excellent. The beef itself was lacking a little more flavor but the dish in its entirety was delicious. The chicken lollipop was my least favorite as the chicken didn't have a lot of flavor and it was a bit dry for my liking. To be fair, we ordered takeout, so we don't know if it was the same if we dined in, but overall the food was good.

I wanted a quick meal before my flight at JFK, so I opted to hop off at Jackson Heights. I've only been to fast casual Tibetan places and I was craving a mango lassi and momos, so I quickly browsed what was close to the station. This had good reviews and was a 2 minute walk, so I went in - without looking at prices or ambiance. I was really surprised to walk in and find that it was a full-service restaurant, complete with cocktails and a bar; however, I had already walked in and the host had asked me what I wanted. A table for 1, I said, and I was quickly led to my seat. I was shocked that a mango lassi was $6 (usually $3 in my experience, but to be fair, I haven't had any at Tibetan places recently) but everything else seemed fairly reasonable. The waitress was able to answer my questions about how long food would take to come out (15-20 minutes for momos, and 10 minutes for other stuff). Mango lassi ($6) - 3/10 - This was one of the worst mango lassis I've ever had, especially at this price point. It was especially disappointing because I had had one yesterday, and I know how to make mango lassis with yogurt, milk, and Alphonso mango purรฉe. There was very little mango flavor so it tasted pretty diluted, even though the color was fairly orange. There was a lot of ice floating in it, which meant it was a much smaller portion than usual as well. I would absolutely not get this again. Fried chicken momos ($12 for 8) - 8/10 - I was feeling pretty upset about this place (the wait, the cost, the bad mango lassi) when my momos finally arrived. The waitress had recommended the fried chicken ones over the jhol (tomato sauce) so I opted for this. I do wish I had tried the jhol because this was barely fried; there was just a little bit of fried-ness on the bottom but the momos were not crispy at all like other fried ones I've had. However, the flavor was excellent and the filling was almost like a soup dumpling in terms of how juicy it was. I actually had a lot of liquid drip down my hand on my first bite, and another one that sprayed liquid onto my napkin. The accompanying house sauce (peanut, sesame, onion, tomato, chili) was delicious, and I devoured my 8 large momos even though that was definitely enough for 2 servings. I would absolutely get the chicken momos again; for $12, this is a pretty great value because this would've been enough for 2 meals for me. The service was also really excellent; the waitress was able to give me give me exactly the information I wanted, and the server who dropped off my sauces was able to tell me the ingredients of the sauce when I asked. The host opened the door for me when I was leaving because he saw that I was carrying a lot of stuff, and everyone was overall very pleasant, courteous, and knowledgeable. I was initially caught off guard that it was totally not what I expected, but this would definitely be a good place to go with a group of friends who do not like hole-in-the-wall casual joints. All of the food is pretty reasonably priced, and I would definitely come back.

Himalayan Yak is some sort of mega fusion restaurant that serves Tibetan, Nepalese and even some Indian dishes. Most of it is good/tasty, some of it you should skip.Let's start with their cocktails: skip them. They charge a pretty penny for them roughly $12-14 and the one I had, the White Tara, was devoid of any profile whatsoever largely tasting like just rum. If you really want to get alcohol, stick to the beers. The Thali - a Sikh looking platter with some white rice, a chicken curry, some other kind of liquid, still another kind of smaller red liquid that tasted slightly burnt and chinese water spinach. For $15 it's ok. The highlight is the chicken curry in which you just get a little cup of. The rest of the stuff is take it or leave it to me.Shap-ta - a stir fried beef fish that is quite flavorful with a hint of spice. It's reminiscent of a chinese style pepper stir fry. Unfortunately the beef just tastes dry and this dish is an overall miss.Thentuk - a giant bowl of spicy broth with hand peeled noodles and beef slices. This is a highlight! Delicious broth, the noodles are awesome and the beef is satisfying. On a cold day, this is the dish to get.Momos - awesome stuff here. We ordered the chicken and they just tasted great. Definitely order the momos if you do end up coming.
Be the first to ReplyI was craving momos and curry, and this place hit the spot!
I was craving momos and curry, and this place hit the spot! I came with a friend right at opening. We each ordered a mango lassi and momos. We agreed that fried was better. The mango lassi was not too sweet or sour and had ice in it. I also got the paneer masala, which came with rice. My friend got a noodle soup dish. There are plenty of vegetarian options which I loved. I highly recommend coming for some yummy food. We had some leftovers but had to take it home.
Be the first to ReplyThe food LOOKS good but it was a disappointment.
As a Bengali, my taste buds did not match anything from the menu- the curry was too sweet, the veggies, or lantern was too bitter and not well seasoned. I guess it's just didn't match my taste buds personally.
Be the first to ReplyGreat place to try authentic Tibetan, Nepali, Bhutanese
Great place to try authentic Tibetan, Nepali, Bhutanese and Indian! Went with a big group so we all ordered different items. My fav appetizer was gyuma(deep fried Tibetan sausage) and chicken lollipop.Loved the steamed beef momos, chicken jhol momo, shakam datsi(beef jerky sautรฉed with variety of cheese soup)Pork chilli was amazing! I was shocked how good their chicken tikka masala and naan was!! Their cocktails were really good too!

My son and I wanted Indian food while strolling around the area. Coming from India I for sure know Indian food and I just had a trip back home so I hardly try any Indian restaurants because there is nothing that tastes like India outside India. But we were pleasantly surprised. First of all service, just one hostess and she was was handling all the tables, all the praise for young lady. And she was courteous and attentive. We ordered Momo as appetizer plus another goat dish. During my last india trips I visit Dharamshala area around my home town for Tibetan food and any one can attest, where there is Dalai Lama and then largest Tibetan population outside Tibet, Tibetan food must be great. Yes it is, but these momo were as good as I get back home in Dharamshala. Just amazing. Lentils and another dish which only I like from my wife's hands was just amazing and felt completely homely. But highlight for me was goat dish and then chicken dish which I tasted from my son's thali. Gentlemen/ladies this is how home cooked food tastes in India and this is how it should be cooked. No extra or any cream, just right amount of spices and then perfect amount of heat. I think I'm going to go tomorrow again for chow mein and few other dishes. And we will be back as and when I'm in nyc. Go eat there, service, ambiance and the food like that you just can't find in any of those manhattan fancy restaurants.
Be the first to Replytheir chicken tika masala and the garlic naan is a must try.
It's always so good and i recommend it for anyone who wants to try this place. I did have a problem with the mango lassi. It tasted spicy(?) but no worries, the waitress replaced it for me without any problems. The staff are very nice. Will definetely be a regular here

Wow. I'm in town on a solo vacation and this place blew me out of the water. I came in at 6:30 on a Monday. It was slow, with a few families dining. I ordered chicken tikka masala and garlic naan and a margarita. 10/10. Service was excellent, so was the energy and the food portions. I would bring family or friends here. They do have live music daily, I didn't experience that but it might change the feel of the place.

I don't live in New York but this is my go to every time I visit New York. No matter where I stay In the city I make sure to visit here and also bring my Friends and family every time. My fav appetizer is ofcourse GYUMA(blood sausage) , and chicken lollipop which both of them became his fav too and he says he liked the dipping sauce that came with the chicken lollipop. And I go with my usual order of tingmo (steam bun), shaptak (stir fried spicy beef) and fried beef dumplings and steam dumpling.. it's so good makes me miss my home
Be the first to ReplyOrdered the momos and chowmeinMomos were meh.
Took too long to come out and it's a pass for me. Momo food trucks across the street make juicier and better momos. The hot sauce was meh as well. I have had much better in the food trucks in the area. Chowmein was too oily and meh as well. They has live music which was great, hence the two stars. Zero stars for the food i tried

Been here on 3 different occasions I have had 2 excellent experiences and one below average experience. My recommendation would be to try the noodles, chilli chicken, the thali (chicken or veg) and the lollipop chicken.I can't stop raving about the lollipop chicken, as its fried to perfection and even the bones are crispy and you can actually bite on it. I did end up eating a bone and now I feel like a true carnivore. Note they were a michelin restaurant, but not sure if they still carry that tag.
Be the first to ReplyMy experience at the Himalayan Yak was excellent.
As a NYC teacher from Queens, my coworker and I planned a field trip experience for 20 of our students to go to the Himalayan Yak as a part of an Asian American Pacific Islanders celebration event. Our students wanted to learn about food from various parts of the world including Nepal. The manager was excellent at communicating with me to plan out our meal and the server, despite having several other tables to serve was patient, courteous and helpful. My students had the chance to try several orders beef, chicken and vegan dumplings as well as other amazing dishes too. Thank you for the amazing educational and cultural experience and I look forward to coming back soon. James from Voice Charter School.
Be the first to ReplyWE LOVE THIS PLACE.
The only downside is that it's all the way in Jackson Heights and we live in the city. Unfortunately, they won't deliver into Manhattan. Food: Whenever we come here we always get the Wai Wai Sandeko. This, in my opinion, is their signature item. I get it spicy and my husband get it's mild. The flavors are so good and well mixed. This time, we also got the cripsy tofu in a sweet and spicy sauce. The tofu was perfectly crisped and the sauce was delicious. We also got a chili potato dish and that was also well flavored. In the past, we've gotten their masala papad and we also loved that dish. I'll be honest and say I wasn't the biggest fan of their momos but everything else I've had here has met expectations or surpassed them. Disclosure: Most of the food items here are on the slightly spicy side so make sure to order mild. Prices: Prices are very reasonable especially for the portion of food.Ambiance: It's a well decorated restaurant that plays Indian music - not too loud. Service: The service here is excellent! We've been here many times and each time they remember us. The food and drinks come out quickly.
Be the first to ReplyJackson Heights is known for the incredibly diverse foods
Jackson Heights is known for the incredibly diverse foods including those from the Himalayan region. Loved that the restaurant serves authentic and yummy Nepali, Tibetan, and Indian food! Since it was my first time having Nepali food, I decided to try the thali, which is sorta like a combination of appetizers and dishes from curry-style chicken and potatoes to pickled vegetables that I can't really explain the flavor of except that it's strongly seasoned lol. The entire platter is definitely shareable for two and costs ~$20. Also, try the steamed vegetable momos -- so good! The service was phenomenal as well as they were very kind, patient, and attentive as we tried to learn about each of the dishes on the menu. I'd say very hospitable staff and service! The restaurant is also incredibly spacious and clean. Overall, I highly recommend exploring Himalayan Yak if you're in the mood to try the cuisine!
Be the first to ReplyOne of my favorite spots for an off-the-beaten path dinner.
Frequently travel from Manhattan to Jackson Heights specifically for the Himalayan specialties at the Yak. Their Yak momos are the best and the apps are phenomenal as well. Well-priced bar and live music, can't go wrong!
Be the first to ReplyThis was my first time trying a Himalayan/Nepalese
This was my first time trying a Himalayan/Nepalese restaurant, so I wasn't sure of what exactly to order, but I'm happy with my dishes! We started with mango lassi's, garlic naan, and a goat curry. All were delicious!! The portion for the goat curry was a bit small, but I'd definitely get it again. It paired so well with the naan, and the meat was super tender. We continued with the yak momo and the combo sekuwa. The momos are similar to dumplings. They definitely weren't my favorite because of how thick the skin was, and the meat was a bit dry, but I was super curious to taste yak meat. There wasn't anything special about that. The meats for the sekuwa were delicious! The marinated meats were so tasty, and the crispy rice was such an interesting touch, so that dish was my favorite. Portion wise, it was quite small, though. I'd love to come back to try some other authentic dishes!
Be the first to ReplyThis review is long overdue.
Mind that I don't often do reviews but they deserve it. I happened to be working in the area, me and a colleague walked past it and just walked in with the idea of a drink and a light snack. The snack, which we ordered randomly was the most exquisite interpretation of potatoes I had ever tried in my life. I do not say this lightly, in my youth I made my bones as a line cook at a Michelin starred restaurant and I feel I have a good grasp of what is good. ย What started as a quick stop turned into a very happy full meal with me and my buddy staring at each other dish after dish, we both can eat. A must try and worth taking a trip from the city for it. The service was quick, friendly and easy going.
Be the first to ReplyComing here recently for a late dinner reminded me that I
Coming here recently for a late dinner reminded me that I forgot to review this place when I last visited an eternity ago (AKA pre-pandemic). Everything is exactly as I remembered. Live music, packed seats, fast service, and pan-Himalayan dishes that run the gamut from the familiar momos to comforting curries to lesser-known treasures.Yes, here is where you can pop your yak butter tea cherry, but I don't necessarily recommend de-flowering unless you're prepared for a hot cup of liquid salt. Also, yaks are male, so the term "yak butter" or "yak milk" is just an oxymoron. But I digress. Do get the veg momos if you need dumpling comforts, and try the Aloo Tama Bodi Tarkari if you want to see how sour bamboo shoots fare with Indian spices (hint: they do quite well!). ย I'd up this rating to four if the live music were a tad quieter (it was like being in a Hindi dive bar) and the place in general were a bit less rambunctious, but at the same time, I'm glad for their success (and aware I have the patience of an 89yo grandma when I'm tired and hangry).

I've always wanted to eat here and finally did a couple of weeks ago with my sister and fiancรฉ. We ate so much and the chicken tikka was soooo delicious! I want to come back and try the yak meat next time. Also very authentic food here so if you want to try a taste of Nepal, this is the place!
