Made reservation for 5pm seating on Friday.
We were the only 2 people in the bar in this small restaurant that seats 8 in the bar and 2 table tops. For $250 per person it was an amazing experience as the fish served were both beautifully done. The flavors were delicate and balanced.
Be the first to ReplyReally enjoyed my visit to Hanare.
Logistics - it is located in the LAB anti mall - if you drive into the main parking to it is int he back right corner - Building C - which is all gray currently. If you see the restrooms just look to the left. The parking lot gets really full so plan accordingly. Dress is not formal but more elevated than casual. There is no restroom in the restaurant, you need to use the communal one in the same building. Omakase only menu ($250) and they offer Sake, Wine and Beer. Strongly recommend sitting at the sushi bar to watch the chef work! The hospitality and service were great. I really appreciated that my server made a sake recommendation based on my preference and then allowed me to try two types of sakes before deciding on a glass. The food was very good, and the courses were generous in portion and quantity. The only things that could have elevated the experience - the chairs at the Sushi Bar being more comfortable, a Menu with the night's offerings. Overall great experience.
Be the first to ReplyHana Re is a tucked away gem in THE LAB Anti-Mall space.
You have the option of being seated at a dining table or at the sushi bar. We opted for the sushi bar for the omakase experience and it was so delightful. The chef explained and showed us each of the main ingredients for the different courses which I really appreciated. The dishes were of course phenomenal. I think my favorite though was the panna cotta at the end of the meal. It was such a refreshing end to our seafood adventure. I would love to come back again to see how the menu changes in the different seasons.

The hubby surprised me by taking me here to celebrate our wedding anniversary. If you are looking for a place to celebrate a birthday or anniversary then Hana Re is the perfect place. It's a very small and intimate setting. Presentation is very beautiful. I have had Omakase many times and I have to say that Hana Re is easily one of my top 5 now. Otoro for example is always super delicious but otoro here was juicy! You heard me, it's juicy. I haven't had otoro that was juicy before. They use really high end and great ingredients and products in every dish that comes out. I truly felt like I was able to taste the different senses like sweet, sour, and savory. Loved that the pace was slow and I got to really enjoy each item that came out. Not to mention being able to photograph each item. They are also accommodating if there are specific allergies of different types of seafood you cannot eat. I highly recommend Hana Re. 2 thumbs up from this Yelper. It'll be a night you won't forget! Tips: *Reservations only. *Free parking at the Anti-Lab. *Restroom available outside. *Credit card accepted. *Alcohol accepted. *Michelin star for a few years. *Omakase $250 pp *Closed Sunday & Monday *Two times seating available 5 & 8pm. *Max reservation is for 4 ppl.

This restaurant truly felt like a secret - a literal hidden gem! Hiding within a colorful metal shipping container is a minimalistic and intimate space. We sat at the chef's counter to watch Chef Atsushi live in action - He left us melting in awe the whole time. Each course looked like a masterpiece made of premium, fresh ingredients. His modest seasoning let natural flavors of the proteins shine. Paired with attentive service, the transition between courses felt seamless and our glasses were never less than half full. Highly recommend this immaculate experience! Be sure to make a reservation way in advance, and give yourself extra time to find parking in the LAB Anti-Mall.
Be the first to ReplyExcellent birthday dinner.
Flavors, textures and plating was wonderful. Good service and nice intimate ambiance. Still thinking about this, from last night well deserving of their Michelin star
Be the first to ReplySo legit.
Understated design in the restaurant but the food was the star of the show. Every dish that came out was amazing. It's a fun play on traditional omakase with them mixing in Wagyu beef, chawanmushi (egg custard), soups, etc. You will not walk out of this place hungry. Service was fantastic and we got to hang out afterwards and chat with the husband and wife who run the restaurant.
Be the first to ReplyAgreed with all the 5-star reviews.
Food was out of this world. Every hot dish was perfectly seasoned! Seafood was fresh, and the portion was generous from crab meat to uni. Quality & taste - 5* All servings - roughly 16 Leaving this 1-star Michelin restaurant very full, very satisfied, and super happy. The counter sits 10 ppl, plus three tables that can sit up to eight. Nice and cozy. Like other 1 or 2-star Japanese Michelin restaurants, there's usually no sign out front, this place has a tiny little sign by the entrance. It is a gem. Maybe the only Michelin restaurant in OC. A must try!!! Definitely a keeper.

Tucked in the corner of the lab in Costa Mesa, we wanted to see if Hana re was worth a visit and we found ourselves a pleasant dining experience at this one star Michelin. We were greeted by the hostess and were seated at the sushi bar. We opted for the 8pm seating and there were a total of 4 parties. We made the reservation on the same week we dined so it seems like the months/weeks of booking in advance is no longer necessary. We started the first course within 10 minutes and finished around 9:45. The highlight of the meal comes from being able to watch the chef craft each course. From scoring the fish to forming the nigiri to torching the nori, it was a pleasure being able to watch with an anticipation for what comes next. Best dish for us: chutoro nigiri & striped jack nigiri. A few dishes featured what tasted like mozuku seaweed with vinegar seemed to overpowered the natural taste of the main ingredient. The a5 was a nice touch, but was a bit chewier than a5s im used to. For those who want to relax and enjoy a slower paced dinner with light conversations, this is an excellent choice. Also, if you're in for a celebration your dessert is plated a little more special! With a total of 16 dishes, we were satisfied and full. Thank you, Hana re for a beautiful dinner with the hubby.
Be the first to ReplyCelebrated our anniversary and my birthday dinner here.
It's a very small place located in the LAB in Costa Mesa. It's blended into the background pretty well so might be hard to find at first especially since the sign is fairly small. I think it only seats 14 people max. They told us the service can last anywhere between 1.5-2 hours, but luckily we went on a weekday and no one else was sitting at the tables so it only took us an hour which was great. It's 10 courses including appetizer and dessert. The price is decent for the omakase experience. It's not the best I've ever had, but pretty close to it. Definitely deserves the Michelin Star.
Be the first to ReplyGreat food, decent customer service.
I took 1 star off because it took forever to get our water filled. It was empty for at least half an hour. For a Michelin restaurant, we expected a little bit more. Other than that, we had a good experience.
Be the first to ReplyCame here the day after Valentine's Day to celebrate
Came here the day after Valentine's Day to celebrate belatedly. We made reservations in advance, which was easy (can be made via texting). We came on a Wednesday for dinner, so parking was easy. Normally, the Lab Anti Mall is packed. When we arrived, we got seated quickly and were told there would be 10 courses. Here's how it went: 1) Spiny lobster - Had a good flavor, but wasn't outstanding 2) Crab, squid, octopus, and salmon roe with some type of fish - the crab freaked me out a bit, but it was crunchy and tasty. Squid/octopus were standard. In general, I'm not a fan of salmon roe 3) Unagi/foie gras - Unagi was tender and hot! Foie gras was interesting but not my fave 4) Hairy crab - Tasted fresh and beautifully presented 5) Abalone and conch shell - Chewy texture. The abalone was one of my bf's favorites 6) Sashimi (snapper, bluefin tuna, kingfish, and another fish I didn't catch the name) - soooo delicious! One of the pieces practically melted in my mouth, and one of them had a nice, thin, crunchy piece of skin 7) Snapper - Wasn't memorable 8) A5 Wagyu - WOW. Melts in your mouth and has such a great umami flavor. 9) Sushi - amberjack, yellowtail, toro, snapper, Japanese barracuda, stripe jack, uni. The toro was soooo tender. The barracuda was perfectly seared. Uni was surprisingly good and had a great texture and taste. Some of the pieces had too much wasabi, which made it less enjoyable. During the sushi course we were given clam miso soup - Actually came with two clam pieces inside. 10) Panna cotta - light and refreshing. We also got an extra dessert. Wasn't sure what it was, but it had an eggy taste. Wasn't our favorite. Overall, I enjoyed the meal and had a lot of fun eating at this Michelin star restaurant! There were a lot of courses, but each one was small, so I wasn't crazy stuffed after the meal. The food tasted fresh, and presentation was neat. My favorites were the sashimi, Wagyu, toro sushi, and barracuda sushi. Price was $225 per person so this place is definitely for special occasions! The couple sitting next to us got special treatment (got extra sushi/dessert), which kinda rubbed me the wrong way, but maybe you gotta be a regular customer for the extras

We love sushi and we were totally looking forward to going to this one star Michelin sushi restaurant. We found the food to be poor and not a Michelin star quality. This was the worst high end restaurant we have ever gone to in our opinion.

I'm so surprised that this place doesn't go more business! It is pricey but it's such a gem and Michelin rated! It's my 2nd time there and it tasted just as good as the 1st. The sushi is fresh and the dishes are just enough to get you full. Def a place for special occasions but will be back!

Wow what a treat. The waitress was incredibly friendly and recommended 3 great sake. I sat at the bar and I honestly could watch chef make sushi all day. Literally everything was delicious and the variety was amazing. I really appreciated how they made me feel (I was by myself, my wife can't live the omakase life and I have no friends). Don't be afraid to speak up, either: I asked for some more sushi (striped Jack fish), and they didn't hesitate to assist! I absolutely will be back! Ideally when I make a friend haha

Wow. Definitely my favorite sushi spot. Hidden away, you'd likely miss it if you didn't come with someone who has been here before. Truly a hidden gem! Every dish was artistically plated and unique. The proportions were enough to make you want to come back for more and the attention to detail is impeccable. This was such a unique and special experience for my husband and I.

Such an amazing choice for omakase sushi dinner to celebrate a special occasion! This incredible multi course meal was just as good as we remembered:Course 1 was the spiny lobster with pear and yuzu - what a refreshing start to a memorable meal!Course 2 was a lovely set of 4 minis: seafood chawanmushi, octopus, scallop ikura, and conch. Each delicious and different with a variety of textures and flavors.Course 3 consisted of unagi and foie gras = indulgent and decadent! Not my favorite but it was very well executed. Course 4 was one of my favorites: hairy crab (pet the shell - it's fun!) topped with delicious caviar and sweet ginger. So well balanced and hearty; didn't want these bites to end!Course 5 was chawanmushi (steamed egg) with abalone and uni. A comforting and satisfying dish for a chilly day. Course 6 was the sashimi course: Japanese grouper, bluefin tuna, bonito, and amberjack. Fresh and delicious!Course 7 was the miso-marinated butterfish accompanied by a sweet pepper togarashi. Course 8 is an all-time favorite and something that will keep us coming bak for more: A5 wagyu beef from Hyogo Prefecture - just the most amazing, melt in your mouth wagyu beef! Course 9 was the part 1 of the nigiri course, which consisted of shima aji, ishigaki snapper, bluefin tuna, and yellowtail - impeccably fresh and delicious.Course was the flavorful clam miso soup.Course 11 was the part 2 of the nigiri course: golden eye snapper (kinmedai) and Japanese barracuda. Never knew barracuda could be so fatty and delicious!Course 12 was an amazing portion of Santa Barbara uni nigiri. I used to dislike uni before trying it at hana re (my "gateway uni"). Amazing what a difference in quality can make!Course 13 was some creamy panna cotta for dessert.Service was wonderful and very prompt throughout our long meal. Recommend snagging bar seating if you can, but the table seating is good too. Only gripe with hana re is the parking, which can be really difficult to find. If you're planning on enjoying their sake/wine/beer selection with your meal, better off just using Uber/Lyft so you don't have to deal with the headache and stress of finding parking!

Definitely deserving of the 1 Michelin star they have!- Price is $225 pp as of Dec 2022.- Parking can be a bit of a challenege since it's in the same plaza/space as Habana and a bunch of other hipster-ish shops. Try to come a bit earlier to look for parking right by the restaurant - esp if you are eating on a weekend.- It's located to the left of Barbonzai. The restaurant itself is small and doesn't have a huge sign or anything out front. (Thinking about it though, a lot of high end places don't have signs out front.)- Service was top notch. There's two servers and they worked seamlessly together. Whenever we were finished with a dish, they were there to pick it up immediately. If we got up to go to the bathroom, they came over to fold the napkin. - Food was amazing. The hot dishes were HOT and the flavors were spot on. Favorite of the hot dishes was the unagi with the daikon and foie gras - somehow they can make it not taste like the generic Japanese unagi (if that makes sense) and the skin was just so crispy! The sushi was delicious - uni hand roll was divine, and the ootoro just melted in my mouth.

Hanare is one of the very few restaurants in OC to have a Michelin star and for good reasons. All of the fish here is super fresh and always imported straight from Japan. Hands down Hanare has one of the most creative, innovative, and not to mention delicious omakase courses I have ever had. It's also very cool how Hanare is sort of a "hole-in-the-wall" and is basically hidden at the Lab! Definitely try Hanare if you are looking for an exclusive and delightful omakase experience.

Best Omakase I have ever had! Very intimate, excellent service, the chef is so passionate about everything he does!
Be the first to ReplyThe absolute best sushi experience I've had to date.
Each dish was artfully and carefully put together and served in such a simple yet elegant way. The only possible advice I could give you, other than to absolutely eat here, is that if you ever get a tiny soft shelled crab, just eat it carefully. He died with a fight as he tried to scratch the roof of my mouth. In the end, I won. The A5 Wagyu was such a special and unexpected accompaniment. It was refreshing in this 20+ bite Omakase course.

Beautifully crafted and presented! The restaurant is small and can be easily missed when you're outside. But when you walk in, it's as if you stepped in a restaurant in Japan. The plating and presentation of all the dishes are of high Michelin-star quality. The freshness of the sushi is also tough to beat! I'm putting a four instead of five because I find this to be more for presentation and freshness of the food, rather than the creative combination of flavors. Nevertheless, it's definitely a 6 out of 5 experience!
Be the first to ReplyThis place is by no means cheap, but it's worth every penny.
Each dish is so thoughtfully prepared and plated. Some of the best/ most interesting omakase I've ever had in my life. Our server even hand-typed a text to me with a detailed list of the dishes and their ingredients (they don't have printed menus). Highly recommend.
Be the first to ReplyWe LOVED this restaurant.
Quiet , unassuming and a bit hard to find .. but the fresh fish... thoughtfully and creatively presented ...made for a wonderful evening. Friendly attentive service too! Cannot wait to return!
