We've been to Hall's in Columbia four times and we've been to Hall's in Charleston three times. Our experiences in Charleston have all been wonderful! Great food, attentive, thoughtful and importantly, professional service every time. Unfortunately, this has not been the case in Columbia. While the food has always been good, I don't know how much worse the service could be. Every time we've gone to Hall's in Columbia, we have been served by inattentive, incompetent and unprofessional servers. On one occasion, the waiter repeatedly addressed me as "dude". Can you imagine that? This is supposedly a high-end restaurant. It is certainly an expensive restaurant. How could it employ waiters who would imagine it acceptable to address an elderly patron as "dude"? The last time we went for brunch, our group had to wait two hours for our food. Miraculously, it came out warm and delicious, but the wait was intolerable. During the last ordeal, members of our party attempted to order drinks from the bar. On average, the drinks made it from the bar to the table, a matter of approximately thirty feet, in just over 30 minutes. The waitress was remarkably unconcerned about all this. In fact, she seemed annoyed at those among us who asked for an explanation. In fairness to Hall's, some of the unprofessionalism seen in their waitstaff is endemic to our times. Many Americans under 30 years of age have never known a formal, full-service dining experience. Most of these young people seem exceptionally self-absorbed and genuinely uninterested in the concerns of their customers. While the customer waits for their cocktail, the server is in back, texting or checking their social media. It is truly remarkable how difficult it can be to get the attention of waitstaff like this. They walk through their serving area, carefully avoiding eye contact with everyone in their care. Ultimately, Hall's is responsible for the poor quality of their waitstaff. This is a management problem which can be solved by more selective hiring and more focused, professional training. However, since organizations frequently reflect the quality of their leadership, improving service at Hall’s Columbia might need to start at the top.
