Overall Terrible
I came to this location with my mother to celebrate my birthday. We started the night walking over 3 blocks to the restaurant due to the lack of parking near the restaurant. This can be overlooked though due to its location. When we got there it was pretty late in the evening. The restaurant was virtually empty. Despite being so empty, after we were seated we had to wait almost 30 minutes for the food to arrive. Not to mention, we had to place our order first before we could even be seated. And there was also an implicit demand for a tip, which I believe is a reward for service not placing an order. Despite the half-an-hour wait the food was not served without a wait for a further 5-10 minutes after my mom got up and asked the waitress where our food was. The food itself was warm at best, felt like the food was sitting for a good while after being cooked before being served. We had done the homework and my mother had indeed checked the ratings before we selected the restaurant. There virtually was no service and if it was known what service we were up to and the bland and almost cold food that we were served, I am not sure I would have added the kind of tips that we did. To top it all, the ambiance was very loud and disproportionate to the number of people that were present at that time. It will not be a restaurant that I would want to ever go to again, especially, if it is my birthday, and will be the last restaurant that I might recommend to my circle.
Be the first to ReplyLooking for “mall” quality pasta?
We stopped here for a casual family dinner and high hopes as we like their other chain, Lardo. The food menu looked good but the execution was awful. I ordered the carbonara and it was literally lukewarm paste with no flavor. My daughter had the pasta alla chitarra. The meatballs were decent but the pasta and sauce was again, complete paste. My husband had the fusilli alla vodka and it tasted entirely of pepper. We love pepper and spicy foods but vodka sauce shouldn’t taste entirely of pepper. The food took a good 25 minutes to show up and we don’t mind leisurely dinners but it should be edible. I suspect our meals just sat instead of being delivered. We won’t be going back, unfortunately. The food reminded me of old mall Italian food, just awful.
Be the first to ReplyCalamari on point, pasta needed salt
The line to order is a little awkward. It could fit in maybe five or six people then the rest of everyone else has to be outside while they wait to get to the front. It was raining outside and we all bunched in with customers in front of us. It would’ve been really helpful to have someone or something continuously manage the line so that everyone could be inside because there was plenty of room on the right and left if someone from the restaurant helped manage the line inside. The staff was pretty friendly and that was really nice. Because you are not seated by a waiter and you just get a number, you kinda have to compete for table space. Our calamari appetizer came out really fast and that was delicious. The breading was perfect. The flavor was perfect. It comes with fried lemons and the aïoli sauce was all very good. It was great to eat fresh pasta and the pork ragu sauce was good. Both of our pastas did not have enough salt, so we continuously use the salt shaker at the table to bring out the flavor of our dinner. The house red wine was ok. It was cool to see the kitchen right there. I would go back for sure.

Cute little pasta place on 23rd Avenue in Portland Oregon. Pasta was good and tasted homemade. On site pasta machine cutting out different type of pasta as we sat. Skip the house wine. If you want wine order a good bottle but all else was quite good.
Be the first to Reply“Outstanding pasta”!
Visited Grassa for dinner! Didn’t expect full service as we paid at the counter. Food took a while to arrive even though the restaurant was not really crowded. We ordered the squid ink chitarra, Mac and cheese for my daughter and 2 glasses of Chianti. The texture of the pasta was good! Was asking my daughter if we should put 5-star rating for this - which is excellent! And she said “it should be “outstanding” like me”! 😂
Be the first to ReplyExcellent pasta, don’t bother w their red house wine
The food is superb. The red table wine is not. Grassa needs to inquire w Wilder in NE Portland about how to offer a drinkable house red.
Be the first to ReplyVery good pasta
We just arrived in Portland and were looking for a place close by our hotel to eat, so we walked a few blocks to Grassa. You order your food at the counter. And they bring it to your table when it's ready. I ordered the pork belly Mac and cheese, and my husband ordered the pesto pasta. The pork belly Mac and cheese was yummy! The sauce on the meat had a sweet flavor that worked well with the Mac and cheese. My husband also really enjoyed the pesto pasta. The serving sizes were quite generous as well. Give them a try; you won't leave hungry!

Pasta paradise!! Yummm. This place is awesome. They are open during coronavirus and they recommend that you order via their Grassa app. We used Doordash and it was fine. You can only do take out or delivery. Felt very safe. Their reviews don't lie. Food is delicious! We had the meatballs, carbonara and simply couldn't pass up the pork belly mac and cheese!! Each dish was packed with so much flavor. Their menu has so many wonderful options for everyone to choose from. Good choices made all the way around. We recommend supporting local and checking em out!!
Be the first to ReplyMy tastebuds were in heaven!
So grateful that my boyfriend wanted to eat here. We were not disappointed. We had the pork belly Mac n cheese, carbonara, cacio e Pepe, and a Caesar salad. My tastebuds were dancing the whole time. I honestly can’t stop thinking about the pork belly Mac n cheese. It was in a league of its own. I could eat it until I was sick it was that good. The Caesar was amazing as well. My boyfriend enjoyed the other two dishes. We cannot wait to visit again.
Be the first to ReplyThe Pork Belly Mac was literal
The Pork Belly Mac was literal fatty pork belly... just straight-up fat. I thought maybe it would be closer to bacon? Perhaps it was undercooked? Perhaps my palate is not mature enough? I took my teenage daughter and her friend, as they wanted to carb-load for dinner. The Cacio e Pepe is why I rated this “very good.” Along with a few other basic pasta dishes we ordered, it was worth the trip. We did have to wonder about the ear-splitting rap music. They offer coloring sheets for kids featuring David Bowie in his Ziggy days, and my daughter asked, “Why aren’t they playing THAT music?” A keen observation.
Be the first to ReplyFabulous pasta, good proteins, wrong and loud music
Our new favorite place as the pastas are made by hand and many specific to the dishes (one even has mushroom powder in it!). The Milanese has amazing sauce and pasta and even though the portion looks smaller, it's extremely filling because of its dense, nutty, rich flavor. The chicken part is average and needs seasoning of the protein and covering, but the Pork Belly Mac&Cheese is good. Overall ambiance needs clear definition as it looks like a industrial cafe/sports bar/mid dining with some Italian elements but no clear design. Prices are higher (most dishes $12-15), but WELL worth it and you won't leave hungry. The music is atrocious; ACDC is great for a concert, not for dining!
Be the first to ReplyThe music was way too loud
The worst thing about this place was the volume level of the music. We asked (twice) that they turn it down and they said they would but didn't. Aside from that, my order was delivered to the wrong table and they didn't catch the error until I got up and asked what was happening with my food, but that can happen and I wouldn't write a review about it unless I was unhappy with the place anyway. The pasta is pretty good but not great, and it's over-priced.
