The food is terrible, I went to celebrate my husband B-day because he loves Japanese food but this place is the worst place in LA

I have to say this is the best Japanese sushi wise restaurant I've eaten so far in LA. The fishes are very fresh and tender, and the tastes are unique and everlasting. All in all, this restaurant is great!
Be the first to ReplyOK... as far as restaurant design and environment, Gonpachi
OK... as far as restaurant design and environment, Gonpachi in Beverly Hills is second to none. The grounds are beautiful and you almost feel transported to Japan. With new management and a new rock star sushi chef this place is definitely worth a second look if you didn't have a first great experience. I frequent Sushi Zo which in my book is the best sushi on the planet, but I have to say, I attended a special sushi and sake pairing event last night and the sushi was amazing, not to discount the sake... the Shichiken Sake was phenomenal. There were 5 courses (which included dessert) of various sashimi, sushi and cooked dishes that paired with the two types of sake being served. The latter was a 3 year aged Junmai Dai-ginjyo that was amazing. They even had a sake lecture, where a 13th generation sake maker from Shichiken actual showed how sake is made! (too cool!) Left with a very full and happy stomach and the unlimited pours on the sake didn't hurt either. So for the $100 per person, this was a great value, a one of a kind experience, amazing food... so keep your eye out for these special events at Gonpachi. I heard that they are also doing this event at their Torrance restaurant on Wednesday (August 17th), so if you missed the Beverly Hills one... shoot down to Torrance! I would call soon since the seatings are very limited!

I came back again once they sent me a message that they had improved their menu and the meal was on them. I went many months after. BOY their food improved. The presentation was much better and the atmoshphere as good as it always is. They have/had many interesting dishes with great presentation. All the food we ate was awesome. Even some kind of simple but well cooked fish. it was mouth watering. They had some japanese tacos! hmm.I came out very impressed and know they have really upped their game.

Overall the food is so-so. I would stick to their sushi rolls and the beef skewers. Stay away from the duck, it tastes like processed meat with plastic. The atmosphere is really cool. When you're inside the main dinning area they have the ceiling blacked out so its as if you're dinning outside in a Japanese garden/courtyard.It reminds me of the restaurant in Kill Bill Vol. 1 without the bloody fight of course. So to wrap up, the food is okay but if you go there you're really going for the surroundings which quite honestly thats all that really matters sometimes especially at a sushi spot.
Be the first to ReplyThe Sherminator was our server (google it :P ).
Came here for DineLA with a friend on a Monday night and the place was not crowded. I'm always amused at how hollywood joints fancy it up. This place was designed like a ancestral japanese villa, I would recommend it as a date spot.We went with the DineLA menu. I didn't care much for the appetizers, but they were pretty creative (the sushi was just ok, as you would expect from a sushi place in H-wood). The main course was very good. I got the cod, which was cooked to just the right amount of flakey and very tender and sweet. My friend got the pork belly and, as you may know from my other reviews, I love fat! So it was very fulfilling to try a piece off his plate. The pork belly was obviously slow cooked for a really long time, the fat was perfectly seasoned and melted like cream would. For the desert, my friend got the plum jelly dessert which came in a champagne flute. I....can't remember what I ordered, which says enough for the quality of the dessert. I loved the ambiance, the food wasn't half bad, nice and strong sake cocktails were definitely a plus. So four stars it is :)
Be the first to ReplyThe interior is beautiful.
Can't say the same for the fish. Positives: they cut the fish fat and big. Negatives: fish quality is mediocre, kushiyaki (skewers) suck (shrimp was rotten, chicken too salty, the chicken wing was burnt. Its such a beautiful and expansive space, they need to make the food as great as the interior and they will be packed. (Sad to say I realized this was the old Ed Debevic's diner, such nostalgia and memories, burgers, chili fries, shakes, waitresses with three foot tall pink hair.....those were the days)
Be the first to ReplyAverage food, but great ambiance.
Service was good and prices are reasonable. Nice date place.Oh, another thing but the sushi bar area looks a little like the House of Blue Leaves scene from Kill Bill I.
Be the first to ReplyTried this place for the first time the other night.
The service was very friendly. I was not in any hurry so I wasn't paying attention to whether it was slow. We ordered a few different items as well as the Gonpachi meal. The white lotus was just OK and I didn't like the Soba at all. Everything else was fantastic. Would definitely go back.

The exterior of the building gives you no indication of what the interior of the building looks like. The courtyard has an ancient wooden gate, koi pond, and Japanese garden. They've really put a lot into the details of the even the rain gutters. When you go inside, the main dining area is like a Japanese temple. The ceiling looks like the night sky and you get the feeling that a Japanese schoolgirl with a samauri sword should be flying through the air. They make their own saba noodles and the food is delicious. However, I don't think that the sushi is any better than any other Japanese restaurant. I've had the best sake of my life here. The sake waiter, not the food waiter, comes to take your sake order. He's from Japan and knows everything about sake. This restaurant would be excellent for a romantic date or a group of friends celebrating an event. If only Maddy could go.
