Freya Detroit Reviews from The Last Year
Food, service, ambiance all excellent! This was one of the
Food, service, ambiance all excellent! This was one of the best restaurants I have been to. Food is amazing. My husband and I did the 9 course tasting menu. There were some fish, steak, soup, etc. Every dish seemed like so much effort was put in to prepare. They actually grow herbs right in the kitchen and cut them as needed. The presentation is amazing as you can see in these photos. I will be back soon to try other dishes I didn't get to this day. I'm sure they will all be good as well.
This is the award winning trendy spot, also just featured
This is the award winning trendy spot, also just featured in Hour magazine. Budget for $300 a couple. Very limited street parking, we were lucky to get a spot on Grand. They caution against car break ins on side streets. Do not park in Oak and Reel's private lot. 1/3 walls around the kitchen space, but for some reason half the seating faces away from the kitchen. They have table purse hooks and reading glasses for issue. Fixed price tasting menu, 5 courses, (plus salad and bread) and you choose from 3 to 4 choices for each course. They have a vegan and veggie choice and all that. All the food is very high end and arty, and presentation is just as important as taste. The staff is very well drilled. Briefing you on all the options, simultaneous service and removal of all the plates. Great service pacing for the courses. My wife dropped her napkin, it was taken care of discretely and quickly before she noticed. First class service. The food was all really good. In particular the swordfish crusted in crushed bugles, and the tenderloin, were perfect. Comparable food quality to Jose Andres in DC. Not enough to take off a point, but issues: 1. It was very loud when full. 2. The restroom floor was sticky.
The flavors are like no other in this very intimate setting.
Each chef prepared offering is better than the one before. Well trained staff with impeccable service. Love the local art adorning the walls. There's no question why at it was awarded restaurant of the year!
The service was impeccable, staff was very well informed
The service was impeccable, staff was very well informed about each component of the dish. Each course has a phenomenal marriage of flavors with a variety of ingredients. A splendid date night if you're comfortable paying 95$ a plate, you will leave full and satisfied after five courses; along with, bread and butter, starter salad and a take home treat.
I like a food experience and my husband just wants a good
I like a food experience and my husband just wants a good meal that doesn't feel too fancy and will fill him up. We got here and I got nervous that he'd hate it because of the serving style and he walked away SO happy. The food was delicious, I loved the nice drinks, the different portions, and the vibe, and my husband thought the food was incredible and that he got enough (he's a large man). We walked out of the restaurant and agreed that it was one of the better meals we've had and could not have gotten better service. We made a reservation right at 5pm when they opened so I'm not sure if the time of the evening helped, but we will definitely be back. The menu is seasonal too so while I loved every single dish I ordered, I'm excited that I'll get to try new dishes on our next trip!
It was very average and I felt like I had been fooled into
It was very average and I felt like I had been fooled into believing it was awesome. It's too bad, Detroit is a great place for new inventive food
This restaurant has been on my list for over two years.
Decided to go to the restaurant a few weeks ago (delayed post) and I have really mixed emotions. The vibe was really dope. I love the ambience and the aesthetics. The food on the other hand was..... I can't even find a word to describe it. I was not impressed at all. $95 each and I'm still hungry.. I noticed that there were several pairs of reading glasses at the front desk, I truly believe they were there so you could see the food. Presentation was beautifully displayed but my belly was unappreciative.
After reading tons of amazing reviews, I suggested Freya
After reading tons of amazing reviews, I suggested Freya for a nice dinner out with two other couples. I really really wanted to love this place, but our experience did not live up to our expectations. The space was beautiful, the waitstaff was attentive, and the dishes were interesting, but the food itself just didn't wow us. Of the five course tasting menus, there was only one dish that I loved, and the others were just okay. My entree also arrived lukewarm, which I chalked up to the fact that our table of 6 had several different entrees which all arrived at the same time. While this certainly made for a nice presentation, I'd rather have my food get to me warm rather than a sit for a bit (which is what I assume happened) waiting for the other entrees to be ready so all could be served together. At this price point, it'll probably be a while before we give Freya another try.
We enjoyed the New Year's Eve 5-course, prix fixe ($165 pp)
We enjoyed the New Year's Eve 5-course, prix fixe ($165 pp) menu with wine pairings (at an additional $89 pp) on this first visit to Freya. The co-owner welcomed us with a beautiful glass of celebratory champagne and showed us to our seats inside the wide, open room offering plenty of space between dining parties. Background music played low enough to speak in normal tones and be easily heard. Nice! Know that you can come as you are. There's no pretension or judgement here. Hailey, our knowledgeable and professional server, worked with ten other servers to get the food out to patrons as soon as it was prepared by the Chefs and their assistants. Watching them work in concert at the back of the room was an experience in itself! The crusty, warm, house-made sourdough bread was excellent. Each course was attended to completely and plated gorgeously. The flavors were so well integrated! The Lobster Potato Bisque incredibly flavorful. The wine pairings were out of this world. Kudos to the Sommelier! I recommend Freya for special occasions. Two caveats: Expect the dining to be a two-and-a-half to three hour experience, AND bring your wallet. It is very pricey.
Freya is the latest venture from the team behind the well
Freya is the latest venture from the team behind the well known Chartreuse restaurant. It is a beautiful open space with an open air kitchen which allows you to watch the hustle and bustle of the chefs as they create beautiful dishes. Additionally, this restaurant supports and features art from local artists around the dining room. freya is unique in that it features a 95$ 5 course menu where you have the opportunity to choose from multiple offerings in each course. The menu changes often as it features ingredients that are in season. Additionally, the restaurant is very accommodating to different diets such as vegan, gluten free, veggie, pescatarian. From the moment we entered the restaurant it was obvious that the restaurant's goal is to make sure that you have a memorable experience. They offered us a glass of complimentary champagne to start the evening off right. Additionally they brought to the table freshly baked squash bread and accommodated my gluten allergy with a freshly baked GF biscuit. Since there were four of us dining, we decided to order all of the options per course and share the dishes to sample as many flavours as possible. I must say that all of the dishes were executed to perfection. It was obvious that the chefs' considered balancing flavours and textures when composing each dish. At the end of the meal they even brought a complimentary gift to take home; homemade fig bars and gluten free chocolates. If you want to keep the night going, you can go next door to check out Dragonfly; the restaurant's sister bar. Our experience at freya was memorable and the food was delicious. I look forward to returning in the future.
By far the BEST restaurant in Detroit! The menu is creative
By far the BEST restaurant in Detroit! The menu is creative and eclectic. The food was beautifully presented and ingredients were healthy and fresh. A combinations of ingredients blow my mind! The service was stellar and the atmosphere unpretentious and simply urban. The attention to detail was beyond and over the top! It's an unbelievable dining experience. One I highly recommend!

The name of the reservation should be on the listing that was transferred to your account when you purchased the reservation.
