The Foxy Brown concept was allegedly inspired by a memorable patty melt and a milkshake. This particular patty melt is no ordinary one - it's a classic example of elevated comfort food. The Be Nice Restaurant Group owns Foxy as well as Top Hat Deli, Lunchroom and others. Growing up professionally around restaurateurs who created small empires like this has set my expectations clearly. Each restaurant generally sports a distinctive, well-executed vision. Unlike easily-franchised concepts, these unique restaurant groups like Be Nice tend to have in common: good friendly floor staffers who know the finer details of the menu; good kitchen staff often run by fledgling chefs who regularly use that experience as a springboard to their career; a commitment to fresher ingredients; a keen understanding of their neighborhood and their broader market; and interiors that are nicely-designed with comfort in mind. They are almost always priced for a range of budgets. The sweet spot is $50-$75 per person with drinks, tax and gratuity - but those tabs can go lower and much higher. My husband and I like to go to The Foxy Brown on half-off wine bottle days. Seriously, half off of ALL bottles, not just a selection of bottles that are overpriced to begin with. Recently, we swam into a bottle of Novellum Chardonnay - a French/Languedoc that is well-priced regularly at $32. But $16 for the bottle? I'm inclined to return. Yyyyep. That particular meal a few days ago included a skillfully roasted half-chicken served in a deep, wide bowl over a blend of quinoa and vegetables, soaking in the jus. We split that and also devoured a large panzanella-style salad of greens. It was a simple meal that reminded us of our trips to Europe - driving through a small town we'd stumble into the local bistrot on the square...salad, roasted chicken, a bottle of wine. We would relax, drink, eat, and leave sated. True here. But, wait...the price! Granted we're not big eaters, but all of that for $62? That's for both of us, not each of us. Total. Including a good gratuity. Service is always efficient at a minimum at The Foxy Brown, and it's usually friendly and knowledgeable. A couple of the waiters have come to know us, and they always make it a point to come to the table and welcome us back, even if we're not seated at their station. That's important to the Be Nice Restaurant brand. "Be Nice."RECOMMENDED: Leisurely lunches, small groups, high value diners who expect to pay in the $50 per person range with drinks. NOT RECOMMENDED: Indoor intimate conversations during high volume evenings, patrons who don't enjoy a casual atmosphere.
