The cancellation policy is insane.
While CHECKING the cancellation policy on Resy my reservation was automatically cancelled. I tried to get it back immediately but apparently the table was already booked -hence no lost revenue! I tried to call but no answer. I emailed twice with no response. This is insane. No popular restaurant should be unreachable and have the table cancelled filled immediately and charge $50 a person. This is insanity. I've heard the food is mediocre anyhow. Just read the health department violation: Food, supplies, and equipment not protected from potential source of contamination. Ugh.
Be the first to ReplyAfter our initial dinner plans became thrown into disarray
After our initial dinner plans became thrown into disarray on a recent Friday, my wife and I found ourselves just a few blocks from Foul Witch and decided to give it a shot despite having no reservation. We put our names down and 1.5 hours later were settled in at the end of the bar with a view of the open kitchen (best seats in the house, IMO). We ordered the Osetra Caviar & Hachiya Persimmon, Wagyu Beef Carpaccio, Linguini with Sea Urchin, and Veal Tortellini. I thoroughly enjoyed the latter three dishes which were all delicious and unique in flavor from each other. This was a perfect sampling of the menu for us. The atmosphere and service are both excellent. The host, Claire, was very helpful in ensuring we got seated at a spot we desired. Foul Witch is a fun and original dining experience which I would highly recommend.

I'm sure because this place kind-of beats to it's own drum, that's the main reason for such mixed reviews. I personally was a fan and enjoyed my experience. As always I jotted down some notes during my time, please enjoy- Fire & Ice: an interesting tasting experience on the plate, the nduja sausage mixed with the creamy stracciatella cheese is both unique but also comforting. It's a combo I've never had before but one I enjoy. Two different textures and flavors that seemingly wouldn't blend well that kind of do. While this was a cool way to start off the meal, it wasn't my favorite bite and it you need to edit something off the list to try; start here. Oh! This is also an off-menu item and might not always be available. Table bread & butter: Call be crazy but this is some of the richest, creamiest butter I've had. Even the bread itself has an unqcious creamy quality to it. Specifically the (focaccia?) bread. Purple potato's and Roe: - boy is this expensive but good. The butter berblanc sauce is heavy enough to be paired with the potatoes but still light enough to not overwhelm the rest of the meal. The pops of raffle fish roe and bursts of saltiness with every bite. Incredible and delicious. Veal Tortellini: - not sure what I was expecting but it wasn't this. The pasta pockets sit in a beautiful savory with a hot of sweet broth. The crevices in the noddles catch some of this while the tortellini itself is filled with a delicate light cream. Bay leaf ice cream: - tart and tangy, velvety smooth. The savory notes from the fresh zing of the huckleberry paired with the crisp savory garnish, this is the perfect type of desert This entire meal would have been better to split for 2. These are small, tapas style dishes. Service was lovely I sat at the bar and the bartender offered great suggestions to help me create a nice meal! Vibe: - from the food to the atmosphere- funky and quirky - Club like music that makes you question if you're at a warehouse party in Berlin. I get the 'spooky' theme/ vibes but this is a scene that's hard to describe, cave like, this place feels underground I had a fun time, but I don't know if I'm running back in the next week. This is definitely the type of place you come when you want something a little different from the norm. 4/5
Be the first to ReplyThe good: butter and bread are incredible here.
The bread came out hot. One bagguette and one slice of foccacia. Also the servers were on TOP of it with refilling water. The bad: We ordered the Peruvian Potatoes with paddlefish roe for $34. These were the most expensive 4 potatoes I've had in my life. They were potatoes. Then we waited about 20 minutes between the potatoes and our two pastas: Cappellini with dungeness crab which was fine, not hot; and Veal Tortellini. This was also fine, not hot. When we ordered, the waitress asked "you sure that's it? That's not a lot of food" and I'm here thinking the bill says otherwise - $110 without alcohol. Please be better or be cheaper, Foul Witch.
Be the first to ReplyI liked this place a lot, but I did go for a special
I liked this place a lot, but I did go for a special occasion so we were down to spend some money. I found the portions not all that small, though I wish the veal tortellini was a bigger portion as it's fantastic, the broth of amaretto (WHAT? HOW?) was unreal and veal filling was insane. Great bread and butter. Wagyu carpaccio was very good, with fried lil potato chips, raw mushrooms, and parm it worked really well nicely. Add some butter and make a mini raw steak sandwich with the baguette. The Celery salad a la Romana was quite nice but the size and flavor were a lot for two. Besides the tortellini we also added an additional pasta, the dungeonous crab chitarra. This is very tasty and flavorful but very little crab, which is a bit of a let down. It was picked back up by the excellent goat shoulder. Some bites were crispy and charred, some lean, some fatty, just a really fantastic roasted meat dish that had the right amount of fattiness and gaminess. Desserts were very good, not very sweet, and the black pepper gelato with bruleed lardo and mint was good but not for everyone. I loved the wine, and the service was quite good as well as the music so yeah, would like to go back for a light meal or win the lottery and become a regular.
Be the first to ReplyMy partner and I have been wanting to try Foul Witch for
My partner and I have been wanting to try Foul Witch for quite some time, and have heard nothing but rave reviews from some friends who have been a couple of times, so when we walked by and were lucky enough to snag 2 walk-in seats at the bar (~6pm on a Sunday), we were ecstatic. Oh, and if you couldn't tell by the 5 star review, we enjoyed our meal quite a bit. While it was pricey for a casual dinner, it is an excellent date spot (ambiance and all). Also - sitting at the comfortable bar leaves you right next to the open kitchen, so you get to see all of the magic in action. While we came for the wine (such an extensive and unique list), we stayed for the food. What an incredible gastronomic menu, all items which pair well with wine (I mean most food does anyway). The bartender, Alexis, was incredibly friendly and either verified or suggested items when we were choosing what to do for dinner. She was also ON IT with water refills and playing / setup, and was easy to approach when we needed something ( which could be a rarity at many spots of this calibre in Manhattan). Food-wise we ended up ordering a few dishes, the anchovies, the veal tortellini, the Oxtail Fazzoletti, the goat shoulder, and the sake lees cake for dessert (a lot of food, but we ended up finishing everything, it was that good). It was difficult to pick a favorite, but the goat was an incredible protein choice (honestly wouldn't have guessed it was goat) - flavorful and super easy to cut (not too gamey or fatty) and paired well with the charred scallions and turnips. Also - do not pass up on their bread and butter (they gave us a slice of each focaccia and baguette) - paired well with every dish and also great "in between course" palate cleaner. We will definitely be back and hope we get to experience sitting at the bar again!
Be the first to ReplyThis place was on my radar after reading about it NYT
This place was on my radar after reading about it NYT restaurants of 2023. Securing a reservation was quite easy. I was expecting a culinary journey. It was ok. A bit pricey but expected. I would have given it 2.5 stars but was not allowed so 2 stars will suffice. Food : Underwhelmed.. We started with the Sonora beans with salsa verde The beans were missing something, perhaps more salt. The salsa verde did give it more flavor. Then we went with the chicory salad with shallots and vinaigrette. Very delicious. I loved that salad. Flavors look on the salad were on point. We then ordered the veal tortellini and the Dungeness Crab pasta. Veal was a SMALL portion, almost a side dish. My wife laughed when she saw the portion. Especially for $32.00. It tasted great. Right amount of seasoning. The Veal Demi glacé was excellent. Right amount of acid, salt and veal flavor. The Crab pasta was also very good but my wife found 2 pcs of crab shells!! NOT good. It was almost salty but the flavors balanced it out. The best part, the house made butter. That butter was DELICIOUS.. Service : attentive to our needs, knowledgeable regarding the menu Ambiance : nice place for a date night, homey, cozy Would I give it another chance, maybe yes. Not right away.
Be the first to ReplyI was taken there for my birthday and didn't walk out, just
I was taken there for my birthday and didn't walk out, just because I didn't want to make my spouse, who picked the place, feel bad. My experience echoes that of several reviewers. Much of the food was very good. We had: - Bead with anchovies and butter. (the focaccia deserves it reputation) - Sorana beans - The mackerel with labneh and watercress (the high point of the meal for me) - Chitarra with crab - Aged pheasant spaccatelli. - The mille-feuille, which was the only disappointment. It was served cold, the cardamom was hard to discern, and the only excitement came from the candied squash, which were cut too big to easily distribute evenly across the desert. The drinks list was adequate, although the beer options were limited to two mediocre (and pricey) selections and a bad one. The service was negligent. I can't lay the blame on any one member of the wait staff. Everyone seemed to be trying. But between, say, receiving the wine list and having your drink order taken, 10 minutes would elapse. Between your desert order and its arrival, 15 more minutes. This would not matter, if the restaurant cultivated a welcoming and pleasant environment. But It doesn't. I'm beyond passing judgement on anyone's musical tastes. If you like to blast house music during breakfast and pretend that your dining room is a sort of 1990s post-industrial loft, by all means, knock yourself out. But if you impose that on restaurant customers, you're either a presumptuous twit or you bear a special animus toward them. Upon sitting down, I could feel the vibration of the music's bass in my bones. I asked that the music be turned down, and the waitress, who had to lean in to make out my request, tried to accommodate us. But it hardly made a difference. We then asked to change tables. Since nothing else, however, was available, and since changing tables would likely not have solved the problem, the manager offered to lower the volume once more. While still unpleasant and loud enough to make communication a strain, it was a slight improvement while it lasted. But the volume went up again while we were still on our second course. According to the SoundPrint app, the volume level averaged to 81 dbs. For reference, that's about the sound of a garbage disposal. I feel sorry for the staff stuck working there and would advise that they report the matter to OSHA. Whoever is running this place should reconsider their career in hospitality in favor of one as a gas-powered leaf blower or as a jackhammer operator. They have no business running a restaurant. I would give the food a 4.5 but would average the experience down to a 1, because if the atmosphere of a place makes you eager to leave as soon as you sit down, it doesn't really matter how good the food is. On the bright side, Avenue A in 20 degree weather has never felt so pleasant and almost blissfully pastoral as when I walked out of that hellhole.

Be the first to ReplyI had some trust issues with Yelp ratings over the last
I had some trust issues with Yelp ratings over the last couple of years because of all the horror stories; however, with New York, I now will wholeheartedly trust its ratings from now on because this was definitely below average, as the current rating shows which is about 3/5. The best dish was the free bread and the fire and ice dish, an off-menu appetizer. FYI, we would've not known about that off-menu that's actually pretty good in that restaurant if it weren't for TikTok so I don't know. Do I now have to do TikTok if I want to get a full experience for my money and the effort I put in to get a reservation here? I had high hopes once we got those two things but was soon let down. You would think that you would be super hungry and starving by the end of the meal because of their infamous tiny potions but worry not because you may unknowingly be constantly drinking water to water down the sodium in your body. I was not only full but bloated by the end of the meal. Honestly, when the wagyu came out an hour into our dining, we were putting responsibilities on others to "eat that steak" because "that's what friends do for each other." We suffer together and for each other. Why are all these expensive and so-called "hip" and "high-end" Italian restaurants so salty? The service was mediocre, something that you would expect from any average restaurant. The only interaction I had with our server was at the beginning when she took our order, and at the end, when she gave us the bill. I would not be writing such a review if someone even had come to ask us how our meal was because I would've complained then and had this off my chest. The ambiance was cozy but oh so tiny.
