Fore Street Restaurant South Portland Reviews from The Last Year
Great Ambiance and Delicious Food
My family and I recently had a great experience at Fore Street Restaurant. The service was fabulous and the ambiance was lovely. The food was absolutely delicious. Try the lamb meatballs and the skirt steak! I will be returning to Fore Street Restaurant again this Summerland any time we return to Maine.
Unbelievable!
First time patrons. I’m not sure why its taken so long! The drinks, the food, the service, and the space were all wonderful. The bread! Wonderful, all around.
Fantastic as always.
Food, service, atmosphere - always 10/10. Happily drive here vs Boston for date night
Salty!
All of the glowing accolades about this lovely place are true and correct with the exception of one thing. We dined there Wednesday April 10 at 5:00 and I ordered the roast pork with spaetzel . It was over salted and when I spoke to staff they said this not an unusual comment. Please SOMEONE talk with chef. The abundance of salt in my system resulted in a fitful nights sleep and nausea.
Dinner for two during a stay in Portland was amazing.
The ambiance of the restaurant is cozy and warm with an open kitchen. We had oysters and mussels for appetizers and both were delicious and fresh. Entrees are in the small side but so flavorful and well prepared. The flank steak could have been a bigger portion. The crab stuffed haddock was excellent with morels and artichokes lending a lot of flavor. Our waitress was so nice, attentive and knowledgeable. Highly recommend this restaurant.

A must try in Portland, Maine! We were seated by Alora, who was fabulous by the way. She was able to seat us, recommend great food and run a wonderfully spaced and intricate dining experience for us to enjoy. She was knowledgable, warm and friendly, and one of the reasons we look forward to coming back. Way to go Alora! Now the food, and I don't use this lightly, OMGoooood! From the duck, with grape and grains, to the rabid and dumplings, to the baked mussels that were HUGE and lastly, the bone marrow and toast; We ate good! The menu changes frequently as this restaurant makes what is brought in locally. The setting was intimate yet laid out in a way that you could have a conversation with your companion without feeling like you had to yell or strain to hear. The lighting was low, but perfect for to simulate a candlelit dinner. You must treat yourself to this staple restaurant. You won't be disappointed.
One word : Amazing Beautiful warm vibe Excellent food

Some good, some bad
The atmosphere & building were nice, however the single candle at our table was not quite enough to light the menus to read them easily - you had to tilt the menu toward the candle. The waiter was friendly & welcoming. The food was for the most part very nice - the lamb sausage starter was particularly good, as was the cabbage side dish. However, the most astonishing moment of the evening was when I went to order the salmon. This is as verbatim as I can recal: me: I'll have the Faroe Island Salmon please. waiter: just to let you know, the chef cooks that rare/medium rare me: I think I'd prefer it cooked through, please waiter: No. me: ?? waiter: we've tried before, believe me, and the chef won't do it. me: wow. WOW. At this point I was so astonished, and didn't really want anything else on the menu - I wanted salmon, so I just went with it; I ate it - yes, it was mostly raw, seared on the outside, and was ok. I don't like the mouth feel of a raw fish dish, but I do like the taste of salmon; the other items on the plate paired nicely. But I prefer salmon cooked, both for taste/mouthfeel and for food safety reasons. Not trying to be overbearing, but I was the one paying $38 for this dish, and I was the one eating it, and I would have enjoyed it more if it were cooked through. I understand a chef at a fine dining restaurant likes to show off their premium ingredients by cooking them in certain ways, and Faroe salmon is renowned for its fattier texture, etc. However, I have eaten at many restaurants in many places, and if I wanted raw fish for dinner that evening, I would have gone to a sushi restaurant. A fine dining chef can also cook a salmon fillet to be beautifully cooked but not overdone and still be delicious. I found it incredibly patronizing/condescending. Like, 'you don't know how you'd like this, so I'm going to tell you and not give you a choice.' I was merely astonished at the time, but in retrospect it bothered me more & more, which prompted me to write this review. I like Fore Street - the ambiance is nice, the food is generally good, the staff were friendly; but for the price and after this experience, I am not in a rush to go back.

A fine dining destination with a focus on food quality and the evening experience. On the advice of a coworker, I stopped at Fore Street for my last meal of my vacation. The open kitchen is a treat - watching someone diligently working is always fascinating. The daily menu gives me confidence that nature's bounty helps to decide what's most worth consuming. I was seated 15 minutes before my reservation, and before long, Megan showed up to talk me through the menu. You'll see from my pictures that I ate very well. I nearly passed up dessert, but I just had to go for it to help prolong the experience. It wasn't perfect. None of the available seafood entrees really lit my fire. The squid was great as an app, using a cherry tomato vinaigrette to help prime the palate. But I didn't really want plain old haddock to be my entree, and I wasn't adventurous enough to try the "poor man's lobster", monkfish - so I ended up going with an apple sausage, butternut squash, and scamorza pie. It was fancy and tasted good enough, but I wanted a fish entree like a salmon or a halibut. Megan, my attendant, noticed that I wasn't really into the Cabernet I'd ordered without really thinking. She generously switched it to the Sangiovese after talking with me about what I wanted from my wine. It was way more to my liking. If I were in the area again I'd at least consider the menu as part of making dinner plans.
Lucky to have been able to make a reservation at this great
Lucky to have been able to make a reservation at this great restaurant March 10th, 2024. The service was impeccable. Jillian was our server. The food is farm to table here, put together artistically and is one of the best meals out there. We were a table of 3, and everyone shared their choices. This is a completely romantic ambiance with views looking to Portland's waterfront district. Soaring ceilings, dim lighting, only the din of fellow diners. If available, get the tartar in any form. The quenelle dish was a rarity and super tasty. One of my fellow diners had the perfectly cooked Boubon brined 1/2 chicken. Desert was a chocolate tray. Also perfect.
We dined at Fore Street last night to celebrate my birthday.
I was really excited to have a great meal. The host and server were very friendly and welcoming. Unfortunately, my hangar steak was just not very good. And the garlic mashed potatoes were just okay. My husband's chicken was good as was the corn bread. I would have expected everything that we ordered to have been top quality. This was a very disappointing way to celebrate my birthday. I wish we had gone somewhere else. We will not be returning to Fore Street for a meal based on this experience.
Lasagna was good.
Service was not. The girl at the front was rude and was more concerned her nails than with her customer service. She explained everything to me as if I was in kindergarten and proceeded to give us stares the entire time. The rest of the wait staff was pretentious and acted as if we shouldn't have been there. If there is another dining option that is the right one to choose.

The service at Fore Street was great - from the host to waitstaff, 10/10. Our server, Joe, was extremely knowledgeable and friendly! We both had the hangar steak, and split sides of sweet potatoes and carrots. It was all delicious, but nothing that makes me want to go back and order the same meal again.
Came here for my boyfriend's birthday and I loved it!
Came here for my boyfriend's birthday and I loved it! Everything is locally sourced and the kitchen is open so you get to watch them prepare things. They carry my favorite Chardonnay: Louis Jadot and their jams on their charcuterie board was delicious! Definitely would recommend. Our waitress was sweet, patient, went over the menu with us, gave us suggestions, and paced our courses out perfectly. My boyfriend had the charred pork chop and I the rabbit. Dimly lit, had a coat check, and parking is across the street.
We finally got a reservation after years of trying.
This is the most overrated restaurant we've ever been to. The food was good but nothing special. The service was adequate but also nothing special, and the server could not answer our questions about wines. The atmosphere is cozy but about as far from fine dining as it gets. More like a pub or tavern.
Overrated
Decent food and service. Atmosphere cozy but rustic. Nothing special. Highly overrated. Cornbread was excellent/order it for dessert.
This is a must stop!! I loved that the menu changes
This is a must stop!! I loved that the menu changes everyday and is based on ingredient availability!! Everything we ordered was great!! Dishes that stood out and where our favorites: Duck liver Wood grilled squid Roasted chicken Scallops Crème freche ice cream Hazelnut cake ( don't remember the correct name)
Outstanding in Every Way
My wife and I dined at Foe Street for a birthday celebration. Our experience exceeded our every expectation. Start to finish this restaurant hit a high note at every turn. Drinks, appetizer, and our entrees were both excellent. My wife enjoyed the scallops and I opted for the chicken. Outstanding!! Our server, Georgia, was as good as it gets. She was knowledgeable, informed, and was there when needed, but also allowed us to truly enjoy this wonderful dining experience. Thank you Georgia!!
Fantastic experience A to Z.
The food the service the ambience and menu variation/ creativity.
The first impression walking into the Fore Street
The first impression walking into the Fore Street Restaurant is the expectation of an exceptional farm to table experience. The vintage brick interior and bustling staff mingled with the aroma of wood smoke from the grill, create a wonderful atmosphere. But, while the service was exceptional, the food served was mediocre at best. Their signature grilled pork and baked haddock, while fresh, were rather tasteless and over salted, as were the two side dishes we ordered. The beans, apart from the overabundance of salt, were the consistency of school paste, and the mushy consistency of the braised red cabbage left the impression one was being served last week's leftovers.
Amazing Experience
My wife and I dined here on a recent Friday evening. We broke our ‘Dry January’ fast with some outstanding Chablis , several cocktails, and some amazing food. We started with the wood grilled squid, which was amazing, and the wood grilled wild mushroom salad. For main courses, we loved the hanger steak and scallops. We wrapped up with an apple tart tatin. It had been several years since we dined here and I’m happy to confirm that this place still rocks after all these years.
Excellent
Haven’t been here in many years Dined at bar and bartender was very attentive!! The mussels were excellent! Pricy but going out to dinner these days is pricy. 27 years in business they are doing something right
Never Disappoints, a Culinary Delighter!
This 20+ year Portland restaurant does not disappoint. Really serves up delicious food from a menu that offered us so many favourites it was tough to choose just a couple. Beef tartare delicious, waiter should have pointed out where the toast was on the plate hidden under the meat. The skate wing was superb. Others enjoyed the blood sausage and the hanger steak. Found us a value red in the Cahors which was tasty for the price. Lovely atmosphere with the Christmas lights up. Oh yes they make a super good Bees Knees.
Great food, great atmosphere, a bit rushed.
We went to a lot of trouble to land a reservation at the Fore Street Restaurant. It was not easy. The food and menu didn't disappoint. Not cheap. Four of us ate; one had rabbit, one veal, one chicken and I had the duck. Everything was great. We had the charcuterie board as an appetizer which was a bit over-my-head as I'm not a gourmand. I was expecting cheese and sausage and it wasn't, so check it out before you try it. I would say the blueberry jam was excellent. The rest, not so much. My duck was fantastic. Each of the gnocci's was a dream to bite. Just wonderful. Thank you chef!!! My partner was thrilled with her rabbit. I didn't try the veal. It I did try the chicken which was to die for. Dessert! I'm a finicky dessert guy and do a lot of baking on my own. I usually opt out as I can't handle paying for a $12 cupcake served with a swivel of ganache and salt on a plate. I tried the dacquoise, which did NOT disappoint. Wow! And, the ginger cakes were terrific,m as well. Hats off to whoever the pastry chef is. I'm a pastry guy. Excellent. Just Excellent. The only drawback of the meal was singular and mind you this was a fabulous meal. There was so much to enjoy. We watched fireworks over the water throughout the dining experience. The drinks were great. The atmosphere of warmth and happy people could not have been better--a wonderful meal. The drawback was the service was a bit rushed. This is a pricey meal. This isn't a fast food restaurant. This is probably the finest dining in Maine. My wife and I eat out a great deal throughout the country and know the importance of good service. I like a relaxed pace--typical in Europe but rare in the US. The best pace is where I'm the last table for the evening and I have to find the waiter to get the check. That wasn't the case and I understand that my early seating meant more servings would follow my meal. Unfortunately, our waiter, an eager man, moved some of our plates away before we were done and the check appeared before I was done with dessert. This causes me to trigger on "how many turns do they want from this table?" Or how can I savor the flavors if he's moving my wife's plate? Had the waiter said something like, "Please don't rush, you can take your time. Just find me when you're ready, " it would have been better and his tip would have reflected that. Instead, I don't think he could have found a way for us to eat quicker. I understand that he needs to make a living. Just a bit of patience, 5 or 10 minutes would have meant the world. Additionally, and I say this guardedly, the dress of the staff could use some attention. The food is Fifth Avenue, elegant, over-the-top good, yet some of the staff looked a bit like Biddeford. I get it, no offense meant to Biddeford, IF that's the image you want to project, "It's all about the food!" The wait staff gets a bit of a pass since food and kitchens are greasy. Shoes, full pass. Then again, only slightly more pricey places have waiters in tuxedos. Before you attack my comment please compare the crisp whites on all the cooking shows and see where you fit in. The hostesses are lovely and handsome and young. Please don't hide your beauty. I say this as a humble suggestion since you know very well how to run a successful restaurant. I don't. Thank you for the lovely meal!
Great spot!
Good food, great service, and lovely vibe! Perfect for a date night out. We particularly loved the maple walnut creme brulee for dessert.
Intimate and high quality
My wife and I went for our anniversary. Overall a charming and warm atmosphere. The smell from the wood fired ovens gave it a rustic feel. However don’t be fooled. Our dining was extraordinary. The quality of the food and attention to detail was excellent. This was definitely a five star choice for quality. Price point was also reasonable. Our server Jesse was extremely knowledgeable and helpful at helping us navigate copious choices. Thank you for a wonderful dining experience!

Fantastic meal and server Jesse! Chilled shrimp and grilled squid were delicious appetizers. Halibut melted in my mouth and was cooked to perfection! Lamb leg was grilled perfectly! Chocolate pudding dessert was delicious. Can’t wait to return!

I have a notice stating that my bid has been accepted and is awaiting transfer. The reservation is for the 18th, but the “moderator” said he will confirm booking by the 28th. Is this an indicator that I may not have a reservation?

Hey @EvocativeFold67, welcome to appointmenttrader! Once the reservation is in your portfolio, you definitely own the timeslot, the review team would not have approved the trade if the reservation wasn't confirmed - so you are going :-) Judging from your post you bid today and are going tomorrow - don't worry as long as you initiated the name transfer, you are good - the transfer service has to work with the opening hours of the reservation team of the respective venue. You will likely see the transfer confirmation a couple hours before your reservation time.
