The ambiance and entry way show the true essence of the restaurant. We showed up right at opening and found a table tucked in a patio corner. Immediately we were excited for the menu options. Each meal seems curated for an experience of authenticity. We ordered the Camarones con chipotle our waitresses favorite. They sold us on the sauce and their joy for it. Second we ordered the CARNE ASADA A LA TAMPIQUEÑA....with mole and verde salsa. The chipotle sauce was phenomenal and something we would not have considered as a go to. The creaminess mixed in with chipotle and shrimp with a simple white rice...perfection. The carne was cooked just right and tender as can be. The mole sauce was a time warp and just as good as our abuelas. The menus rich in authenticity and well portioned without being overwhelming. We got the flour and corn tortilla and you won't be disappointed with a mix. The corn are blue and flour thin but so good. As both as a more complimentary item to the meal their size is perfect. I highly recommend stopping by and asking your waiter their favorites.
Home sweet Fonda - man I love this place.
I got to take my traveling dinner crew here the other night, and everyone left satisfied. I went a little TOO hard on the queso fundido and ceviche that by the time our enchies came out, I was full. Our server checked several times if I had an issue since I didn't touch the enchiladas at all (much appreciated), so I had to let him know I've had the suiza enchies before and I KNEW they'd be fire for work lunch the next day! The restaurant is such a cool spot to take out of towners or on a date. Like I said before, happy hour is the way to go if you can snag a bar seat ;)
Management will not hire you if you're gay.
Was told by another manager the owner tom verbatim stated "no more gays" Please know this is the type of establishment you're enjoying. I've interviewed with them multiple times made it to the final stage of interviewing each time. Have an excellent polished resume. Very respectful and well spoken. So I have to assume that the rumors are true unfortunately. Also, the reason the servers make so much money is because they autograt on five or more and most customers don't notice and double tip that was an enticement told to me by the management staff themselves. Seems like a pretty dishonest practice. Terrible management, not the brightest bulbs. Probably why they've rotated through several GMS and managers over the last few years!! Olivia is quite lovely though!

Fonda San Miguel is THAT spot! From the moment I sat at the bar, everything about my experience was on point. I ordered the chicken tinga quesadillas and wow - SO good. They come with three pretty good size pieces, perfectly flavorful and satisfying. The complimentary chips and salsa are already worth the hype... that green salsa? I literally wanted to dip everything in it & did! Now, let's talk drinks. If you're a michelada fan - RUN, don't walk - theirs is sooo good. The margaritas are also amazing, but the prickly pear mezcal frozen marg? LIFE-CHANGING. I even tried the actual mezcal they use in it and it was smooth and delicious. One of the bartenders (I wish I remembered his name!) was the sweetest and seriously perfected that margarita he did his thing- I'd go back any day just for that drink. I will totally be bringing my friends and family back here. There was another bartender she was super sweet too and always checked in on me and my friend which is always appreciated. On top of the food and drinks, the service was incredible and the atmosphere was a total vibe. At first I wasn't sure if it would feel too "fancy" since some people were dressed up, but the staff was super welcoming, and the complimentary valet was such a nice touch (shoutout to the valet guys for being so friendly too!). Fonda San Miguel has definitely become one of my new favorites in Austin - can't wait to go back!
This is a mainstay in my dining rotation.
If I take colleagues to dinner this is one of those places that leaves a favorable impression. Service and food are good. People always leave talking about how much they enjoyed their meal. For me, I haven't ventured too far into the menu, because once I found the lamb chips I don't order anything else. I will do better in future visits. I'm told by those I've dined with the vegetarian options are great, too. There's onsite parking as well. This will remain a destination for me.

Wonderful dinner tonight! The camarones en crema de chipotle were fabulous. The ceviche was fresh and delicious. Service was exceptional! Cool Spanish decor. Can't wait to come back.
Fonda San Miguel definitely lives up to its name.
We had a 4-person group come in for a week day dinner. The place is decorated in a classic Mexican way with a super modern bar. The server for our dinner was fantastic, giving us great recommendations and always making sure we had everything we needed. We split the salsa flight to start with. Each of their salsas were tasty with a few that had a solid bite to them. It was a great item to share with the table. For our entrees... - Ceviche Las Brisas - Calabacita - Relleno de Picadillo - Carne Asada a la Tampiquena with a Duck Enchilada - Pescado a la Talla - Nopal Salad We enjoyed all of our items with a couple of exceptions... the ceviche was honestly forgettable. We're big ceviche fans and just didn't feel like this one stood out in the slightest. The nopal salad was mostly carrot and very little cactus which was what we were more interested in. That said, we love love loved everything else. The sauces that came with the calabacita and relleno were tasty. The steak was cooked perfectly. The fish was something of perfection, just eat it slow because bones. Overall, we had a great meal and would definitely recommend it.

Our waiter had great energy and gave us the backstory of the restaurant when we sat down. We had a few accommodations we needed to make, and he was happy to adjust the dishes. Our table was also right by where they make the tortillas which was super fun to watch. We ordered margs, vegetarian queso fundido, mole chicken enchiladas, relleno San Miguel, and tacos al carbon. The queso fundido was phenomenal - love that it came with both flour and corn tortillas. So good. Our waiter's favorite dish was the relleno San Miguel, and it ended up being a table favorite as well. A must-visit restaurant in Austin!
It's been several months since I've been here.
Very disappointed in my experience tonight. Service was super friendly and would've been great if they would've come by the table a little more frequently and not left us hanging for the last 45 minutes waiting. The food was better at chipotle and of course at Matt Hill Rancho. Very bland for some reason.
Great food and ambiance
The interior was gorgeous and a lot bigger than it looks like in pictures. The atmosphere was really great. Everyone was super friendly and our server Luis was amazing. We told him it was our first time and he recommended some great dishes. I had the duck enchiladas which were super tasty and flavorful. Their guac was also the best I’ve ever had in my life, super flavorful and creamy. Food came out pretty quickly even though it was a busy night. Five stars all around, highly recommend!
Austin’s Best High End Mexican Restaurant
Austin’s best high end Mexican restaurant is not downtown, it’s in the central Austin neighborhood of Brentwood. Fonda San Miguel has incredible food, ambience and style!
Great dinner
First time here in a few years. Place was crazy packed on a Weds night. Service could not keep up which made for a slow dinner. Drinks took 20+ minutes. Luckily the food is still top notch.

Best restaurant in Austin. Amazing ambience, very romantic setting. Professional service, which is also friendly and accommodating. Varied interior Mexican offerings that are always tasty and with a great presentation. Flavorful lamb chops, grilled shrimp great, and black beans are a must have, as is the ceviche. Best frozen margaritas in the country. Really! Love this place and look forward to going again soon.
Lackluster Meal
Hadn't been here in a while, and never thought it was so Fabulous as others. However, returned here recently. It was Mediocre at best. We were given chips in a bowl for about one person, yet there were three of us. The salsas were good though. One person had the chile relent and thought it was Awful. Another had the lamb which was OK. I had the fish veracruz which was good. All in all, we would never return. It was EXPENSIVE for a Lack luster meal.
The best Mexican food Austin has to offer
This is THE best, most authentic interior Mexican food restaurant in Austin. It has been here for years and just keeps getting better and better. As you step in the door, you feel as if you've left Austin and walked into a beautiful Mexican villa. As you wait for your table in the bar area, tropical plants and artwork surround you. The dining room is beautifully lit and your eye is drawn to the many paintings on the wall. But the best is yet to come. Every item on the menu is superb. I have tried most of their offerings but for the last years I have settled on my favorite, Chili Relleno San Miguel; no more experimenting. The service is perfectly performed. Things appear on the table as if by magic and plates disappear just as smoothly. A visit to this restaurant is a must for anyone visiting Austin who wants to sample a very long tradition of very fine food served in charming surroundings.
An unfortunate let down
A beautiful restaurant, fine service .And the dishes all look authentic interior Mexican. Unfortunately, quality has slipped a lot, and the dishes lack zest an depth in taste. A disappointment as the food used to be super. Yet, every table was full. In the future, El Naranjo on South Lamar will be our go-to eatery for interior Mexican, and Matts El Rancho for Texmex.
Always good food in a beautiful atmosphere
Whenever we get to Austin we try to eat here. We were not disappointed. The food was great and the service was wonderful, thanks Merilynn. We had our granddaughter with us and she was treated royally.

Not a planner? Grab a 4-top table near the bar .. before they're gone at 5:30pm. As others have remarked, this is THE SPOT for high, quality Mexican Food. Ambiance is great and will transport you to a lush, green Mexican hacienda .. We started with apps, like the ceviche & chips and guac .. pure bliss. Mains were great - try the Enchiladas w/ Mole or the Pork Cooked in Banana Leaves. Hook'em

Still wonderful food and service but changed the happy hour to only $2.00 off vs half off. Really shocked when I received the check. Updated review as I don't think it is fair to penalize this restaurant for the pricing change. This is still a treasure for Austin!
Great Mexican restaurant with a wonderful happy hour.
It gets busy very quickly after 5 PM. But what construction is going on next door, are they expanding where the old laundromat used to be?

I've heard soooo much about Fonda San Miguel since moving to Austin and I'm so glad I finally got to try it! Firstly, the vibes are so giving upscale Matt's El Rancho. Their margs were fabulous. Their queso fondido and guac was awesome. Guac had these 2 cheese sticks in it which I assume was cojita but it was such a yummy addition. Their tortillas on the side of the queso fondido were also delish. I got the enchiladas verdes and my friend got enchiladas suizas. These were both SO good. I'm glad I got verdes because suizas would've been a bit heavy for me but seriously so good. We went out after so it wasn't heavy enough to weigh us down you know. Their service was great too - since we were a big group we were slow at making decisions and the waiter was patient and attentive! Overall 10/10!!! Love this place for group dinners or special occasions. Hope I go back soon!

However, bar is first come, first serve. Service was pretty quick too. It's a beautiful place and nicely dim area. They do have natural light too. Food was surprisingly tasteful and drinks were great and flavorful too. The parking was actually not so bad. Again, you need a reservation. We were just lucky.

We took my Aunt to celebrate her birthday and she liked the festive environment with the mariachi band and colorful interiors. The food is rick and filling so it's an indulgence for special occasions. But there are only a few restaurants in Austin that have this kind of lively decor, good vegetarian options, and dependedable service.

I'm pregnant and the hostesses were considerate and accommodating while waiting for our table. Our waiter and manager were also very kind and friendly. The inside was beautiful as well.

An absolute must when you live in Austin! Resys may be hard to come by, but they reserve spots for walk ins. Best time to come in is during their happy hour where there are reduced prices on some of the items. The most recent trip I got a marg and their Al pastor tacos (but on flour) and they were delicious! Service is good, especially when you're at a table versus the bar.

The steak melts in your mouth and the grilled onions were just an added but delightful touch! The ambience of this restaurant is spectacular, such a cool vibe with natural sunlight coming in the waiting area. Our server, Josh or J, was phenomenal. Efficient with us and made sure everything was good the whole dinner!
First the atmosphere and art work are amazing.
The food is equally amazing although on the high side for Mexican food, although it is not your everyday Mexican food or Tex/Mex

Make sure to get a reservation as this is a busy place. Very attentive service by all the employees. Food was very flavorful. Had the tacos al carbon and my wife had a chicken quessadilla. Both were excellent. The chips and salsas were also great.
Not top tier
The Uber driver looked puzzled and wanted to know which concierge was displacing us so far out of downtown as a group of 6 looking for the best of what Austin has to offer. While this place is cool to look at inside and out, it’s a family eatery out in suburbia rather than an upscale destination in the heart of things. Not what you want then you’re in town for just the weekend. The food was adequate and margaritas were great. The 3D portrait that looks like the Pope (but is actually the restaurant owner) is just weird. I don’t understand how this is restaurant is appearing on list after list of Austin’s top dining. It’s just not in that league and we are bewildered as to why a luxury hotel concierge would have sent us here.

I've lived in Austin for six years and it's been in just the past year that I've been learning that there's an entire class of restaurant in this city that relies entirely on nostalgia and a reputation from years past. These restaurants have been around for decades which by all means, is impressive. But their foundations were cured well before the dawn of Austin's current burgeoning food scene full of creativity and innovation. I imagine that the survival of these places is hinged upon people's habits and reflexes. "My parents used to take us there thirty years ago for special occasions so it's what comes to mind when another special occasion arises." Matt's El Rancho and Vespaio fit into this particular category. And I'd add Fonda San Miguel to the list as well. The interior decor is fascinating and a pleasure to look at. The exterior of the building and the surrounding property is delightful. The table salsas were great. The overall service was accommodating. The guacamole was passable, the mole didn't have much flavor, and the cauliflower tacos were pretty greasy. I was most excited about the Huitlacoche Quesadilla. The Huitlacoche is seasonal and I was thrilled when I was told that it was available on the evening that we dined. But it ended up being a bit underwhelming. I relied on all of the sauces from the various dishes at the table to amplify the flavor. I was dining with a friend (who was in the know) who requested the housemade tortilla chips. Had he not, their default is to serve chips from a bag. If Veracruz All Natural can serve me housemade chips from the back of a truck then, I think that Fonda San Miguel probably has the resources to do the same in their massive brick-and-mortar kitchen. From their reputation, you'd think that this place would be on par with Comedor or Suerte but the truth is that it's more suited for the Eldorado Cafe or La Cocina de Consuelo caliber of dining. The food quality simply does not live up to the impression of fine dining. Fonda San Miguel is disappointingly average and I assure you that there's much better out there.

My wife and returned to this establishment after experiencing a wonderful meal less than a year ago. While the ambiance and service continue to be impeccable, the same cannot be said for the food. As with most mexican food establishments chips and salsa were presented. The chips were light but a little oily and the salsa, both green and red were just lacking. Large chunks of tomatillo were left in the green sauce and the red was nothing more than a watered down knock-off of something that only resembled hot sauce. The highlight of the evening was the small queso fundido con rajas ($9.75). This dish was served piping hot with fresh homemade flour & corn tortillas. Really delightful and recommended, yummy. I had a dos XX bottle beer ($8.00) and my wife had the strawberry swirl ($15.00). Her drink was tasty but really strong and my beer was nice and cold. The entrees arrived and nicely presented. My wife had the Pescado Zarandeado ($36.95) which was slightly overcooked but included a quite large portion. I understand this is a signature dish so the imperfections were magnified as nothing more than a lack of concern by the kitchen staff. I had one of the specials of the night - Chili Relleno con Camarones ($28.95). The presentation just sat there, a big chili relleno surrounded by some lackluster sauce filled with teeny tiny shrimp. The shrimp were properly prepared but had zero flavor profile just like the sauce on the chili relleno. After tasting this flop I was wishing I had ordered something else. This is an expensive Mexican Food restaurant. Our dinner for 2 with drinks, tax and tip was $130.00. As much as I was overwhelmed a year ago with Fonda San Miguel, I was equally underwhelmed this year. After this disappointment I am not sure I would return for a third bit at the apple. In Austin, you can find much better establishments for the money.

Started going to Fonda San Miguel with my parents in 1976.
Today, it is my family's go to place for celebrations. The atmosphere is uniquely old school Austin. The food is authentic interior Mexican and consistently amazing. The service is first rate with staff that has been in place for generations. If you want to taste one of the best in Austin (and its longevity underscores) you must go to San Miguel's.

Fonda San Miguel is one of my favorite restaurants in Austin and my go to when I have friends come in from out of town. A friend recently traveled here from the UK and I took him to dinner there. He had told me he wanted something other than Tex - Mex (which I adore) and I told him this was more interior Mexican food. I am always delighted at the menu choices and the margaritas are impeccable. We started the calamari which was absolutely incredible and cooked to perfection. A must have. I ordered the wagyu tacos with nopal paddle and brick layer salsa. It was amazing. My dining companion ordered the lamb. The portion was HUGE and he absolutely enjoyed it. You can not go wrong with anything on the menu at this place. Beautiful interior and amazing staff. This place is by far one of my top 5 picks in all of Austin.

Walked in without a reservation on a Tuesday eve and was impressed that they had a 45 min wait, BUT you could sit anywhere in front of house open seating and it was full service menu still!!! So we sat down and were promptly greeted by a kind server. They were diligent with water and chips and our food was delicious. I forgot what a local gem this place is. We will be back asap!!
The food is overpriced for the quantity.
I ordered enchiladas and they were horrible, it came with literally 2 spoonfuls of rice and beans. Not worth the wait or price.

Not your typical Mexican restaurant with unusual authentic dishes that will tickle the tastebuds and satisfy everyone. Especially impressed with a full plant based/vegan set of options that was not just the substitution style approach but rethinking and reimagining dishes Drinks were great too
Great meal … As Always!
So good! Dinner with my wife and several of her work colleagues. All kinds of yummy appetizers -- beet tacos and cauliflower tacos, fried oyster tortillas (wow!), best lamb chops in Texas, memorable black beans, and crazy fresh guacamole. Entrees great too - shrimp, steak fajitas, and more. Still fabulously decorated for Christmas. Wonderful server! Great dining experience!
Loved the atmosphere! And the food was exceptional.
The setting is exceptional due to lights and trees. Service was top notch and we each loved the meals (pork and beef). The pork shank simply melted off the bone and we recommend highly.
Top Notch, Authentic Mexican Food!
Outstanding food, service, and atmosphere. I ordered the ceviche as an appetizer and the cochinita pibil (Yucatan pork baked in a banana leaf) and both were VERY good. I'd highly recommend those dishes.

I went to this restaurant after 5 years. I’m super sorry to say that I was disappointed during my this visit. I sat on bar as I was alone.. to my disappointment both food and drinks were very disappointing. I felt like I wasted my money. I’m so sorry! Do not recommend.
Gorgeous restaurant!
I wished I liked this restaurant better than I did. The outside entrance and interior is amazing Mexican architecture at its finest. This is the prettiest Mexican restaurant I've been to. I had the camarones crema de chipotle and queso asados. My wife had the enchiladas suizas , but thought it was bland. Sorry, just not not taste.
Outstanding Mexican restaurant
We really enjoyed our birthday dinner. From the moment that we walked into this beautifully decorated restaurant, we were not disappointed. The ceviche was outstanding! A generous bowl of fresh fish with avocado and pico de gallo. We loved the spinach salad, but our fish entrees were fabulous. I had a very generous portion of grilled fish with vegetables and my husband enjoyed a fish Veracruzano. The service was attentive and friendly. At the end of the meal, we met the owner, and we reminisced about restaurants long gone in New York City.

* If they successfully get the 6 PM table for four, Peter receives a confirmation that the reservation has been secured.
