Great place in Ankeny.
Too long of a wait at 30hop across the street, so we tried this place and are very glad we did. A wide selection of Mediterranean dishes, but we decided on the Mediterranean feast, with a couple of side dishes. We were not disappointed, very nicely flavored, and plenty enough for our party. We will return and explore more of the menu. The seafood paella looks good, but one of our party had a seafood allergy so we skipped it. We sat outside, in very pleasant weather. The only problem was they only had tiny bistro tables in their patio area so they had to move three of them together to seat us. Great place.

My wife and I stumbled upon this place on a recent visit to the Des Moines area. The dining room has kind of a hip vibe. They specialize in Mediterranean food. The hummus was creamy and delicious. My wife had the vegetarian platter which had a huge variety of excellent vegetables. I ate the falafel sandwich, which was also very good.
Be the first to ReplyFirst time here. Our go to restaurant when we are in the area.
Service is excellent. Relaxed atmosphere. Food is cooked where you can see it. Owner came to the table to make sure the food was good and being our first time explained the food. All was excellent

We were visiting Iowa State Univ and stayed in Ankeny for a couple of nights...and found a "gem" of a local restaurant...with great food and super service...Croatian based lineage...and a "good value for money". We ended up going there both nights we were in town...yummy.

Driving through Iowa we searched specifically for a Mediterranean vegetarian restaurant. Way off the beaten track, we found this place. All was fine until we decided to move tables in order to keep an eye on our vehicle. The staff helped us move tables. Then the owner blustered over, telling us we could not sit there as he MAY get a booking!!! Well, our food was on the table so we resisted, saying we would not be long, were already about to eat and heck, are paying customers, not potential customers. This fool decided to get rude, got in my wife's face and raised his voice. We were horrified. What an absolute crap attitude. And, I think he is the owner to Boot. Even worse, that he is so short sighted and knows nothing of customer service. He also disturbed other customers sitting next to us and no doubt left a bad taste in their mouths! He not only lost customers, we will never go back, and would like to warn other potential customers that flavory is not what it is made out to be. The hostile and aggressive attitude of that horrible man, left us speechless!

Great flavor and lots of meat on the gyros. They were delicious. Fries were a great side; extra crispy and tasty.

Flavory Bistro Flavory Bistro is located in Prairie Trail in Ankeny and is a family owned small restaurant that serves not only great Mediterranean dishes but some pretty mean sangria. The staff hustles to bring out your food and is very helpful in selecting menu items. We went there as a party of four on a Saturday evening and started with a sharable Mediterranean plater ($21.95) with a Greek salad, hummus, roasted peppers and veggies, baked lima beans, falafel and bread. The falafel was extremely good and similar to what I remembered I ate on the street in the old section of Jerusalem. The Mediterranean platter had good flavor and an appropriate dish for 4. Several in my party ordered the Sangria and it was just as good as the Sangria my wife and I had enjoyed on the Costa del Sol in Spain. If you go try the Mediterranean steak that is a marinated flank steak sliced and cooked medium rare as ordered. On a previous visit I enjoyed the Gyros served with tzatziki. Next time I plan to order the Paella. The owner and his wife (the cook) are always around overseeing the staff and they enjoy talking to the diners. This in my opinion is always a plus to ensure quality of the food and service. We will definitely be back

My husband and I tried this little gem for the first time tonight and we were not disappointed! My husband tried the chicken soup and it was so flavorful! The gyro and Italian panini were delicious and the wine... so good! Our waiter was very friendly and helpful. Almost forgot... try the baklava! Can’t wait to go back and try some other dishes!

We visited Flavory Bistro during Restaurant Week and shared the paella for 2; we order paella whenever we can and agreed that Flavory Bistro is a good option for paella in Des Moines. Although we had not done that, if you call ahead, they will make it with clams and mussels as well as their standard shrimp, scallops and chicken. The atmosphere was very informal, with a counter facing an open kitchen in addition to the tables; there was a lot of interaction between those working in the kitchen and the guests. It is a relatively small space and was full on a Friday night, but they do take reservations. The beer and wine list is limited; I had a nice wine, but my husband was disappointed that they didn't have an amber beer available.

Fresh, delicious, healthy food. Something for everyone. Excellent customer service. I love this place, every single time. I can eat there alone or with a large group, and I always get great service. Sit at the counter and the owner, whose enthusiasm for fresh, great-tasting food is contagious, might give you samples of whatever she is working on. I love the salmon breakfast plate and the veggie omelet. And the beef gyro. For a special occasion, call and reserve the shrimp paella, which is served family style. But call in and reserve, because it takes time for them to plan, prepare and make. It is absolutely incredible.
