Estela is probably my favorite "format" restaurant.
I feel like their format was more prevalent in the aughts. But I am SO grateful that they have stuck to it. You arrive with your party and they provide you a menu with a listing of items from lightest to heaviest (as in oysters at the top and duck breast or wagyu steak at the bottom). If you arrive with two people, they recommend four to six dishes, with a party of four, maybe eight to nine dishes. Keep in mind, each dish is meant to be shared and is timed perfectly to be delivered one at a time with careful attention paid to when your table appears ready for the next dish. THIS is the feature that makes the meal a great place to meet a friend to catch up over a bottle of wine and a wind range of delicious tastes to both indulge in and discuss (if you're into that). I have been going for years, typically with only one other person. However, for my birthday this year, my 10 and 12 year old kids asked that I take them to my "favorite restaurant that I always go to with my friends". I believed they were ready, and they WERE. They were so excited to try this "legendary" place that I always left them home to go to. The menu often changes but the two main stays that never seem to change are the beef tartare with crispy sunchokes and the endive leaves, drizzled with olive oil and served with finely chopped candied walnuts, anchovies and "ubriaco rosso" cheese (basically a pecorino romano aged in wine) -- my FAVORITE thing on the menu. There is a reason the two dishes mentioned above are mainstays. They are the best, in my opinion. I have never had a bad dish at Estela. We always get the oysters of the moment, usually ricotta gnocchi in a mushroom broth perfection. As far as the proteins go, those seem to change the most often. Last night we had the Mackeral with seaweed, favas and avocado the the wagyu with brussle sprouts and tallegio. Everything was excellent. I stand by my original assessment that the best way to enjoy this restaurant is with one of your best friends to share a bottle of wine as they deliver one small plate at a time. The format is perfection for that particular scenario, though my kids did rave about the beef tartare, the endive and the wagyu. Love You, Estela.

The food, service, and ambiance were all spot on. Everything pictured below was amazing. We also had, not pictured, the Ricotta dumplings with mushrooms and pecorino Sardo which were one of my favorites. The Endive salad was my number 1 favorite dish of the day. The Charcuterie and the sourdough bread , though basic sounding, really was delicious as well. The Executive Chef stopped at our table to see how we liked everything and that was such a pleasant personal touch. We tried both the Chocolate cake and the Panna Cotta and both were amazing as well. Really great experience and will definitley be back.
Be the first to ReplyEstela left a bad taste in our mouths.
Our experience was ruined by overly salty dishes that drowned out any hint of flavor. The Beef Tartare lacked the promised beefy essence, and the oysters were swimming in salt and garlic, making them nearly inedible. To make matters worse, the outrageous prices for tiny portions, like the $52 2oz Wagyu beef steak, felt like a rip-off. Even the supposedly delicate crab dish was ruined by too much salt, masking any subtle flavors. The monkfish, which was supposed to be a highlight, fell short, lacking any noticeable seasoning or creativity. On top of all that, the service was a mess. Despite having a reservation, we waited for half an hour to be seated, only to watch servers stumble around with our dishes, not sure where they were supposed to go. The fact that they didn't offer espresso or serve regular coffee properly only highlighted their shortcomings. And serving scalding hot coffee in a handle-less glass cup was just ridiculous. With over 1500 four-star reviews, I really hope this was a one-time experience, but unfortunately, our visit fell far short of expectations. The only good thing was the sourdough bread, which was the only thing worth eating, for a bill of $700 for four people. Despite its one-star Michelin rating, our disappointing visit to Estela has us doubting the credibility of such accolades.

Had the most fantastic meal- scallop, arroz negro, steak, and the sweet potato dessert were standouts. Phoebe was amazing and answered every one of our questions, flawless service. My tiny little water glass was constantly full thanks to an incredible service team! Literally made a reservation for later this week to try the rest of the menu while we were sat. Perfect meal, perfect space, perfect team, no notes.

Loved this restaurant! Every dish was delicious and surprising. The small plates allow lots of tasting even for two people. *Spoiler alert* - if you keep reading this review the surprises won't be quite as surprising... We started with the scallops with brown butter and golden potatoes which was presented as a perfect glossy hemisphere of... something. It turn out the hemisphere was a hyper-smooth potato puree that covered fairly raw scallops finished as a kind of ceviche in light lemon juice. The interplay of rich brown butter and bright lemon was a unique and yummy. Next up was the endive with walnuts, anchovy, and ubriaco rosso that continued the "surprise" theme. The again lemony endive completely covered the walnuts and 'chovies so that it initially looked like a plate of endive leaves. The bottom layer was rich and crunchy so that a bite would combine with the endive for a welcome and juicy "pop" in one's mouth. Our third dish was the star of the evening: fried arroz negro, squid, and romesco. This is essentially the bottom crunchy part of properly cooked paella using black rice. Wow - filling, satisfying, tremendously delicious. If you like paella don't skip this one. Our entrée was Berkshire pork with market greens and black truffles. A satisfying and filling end to a great meal. Our server was charming, knowledgeable about both the dishes and the right wine(s) to pair with and efficient. You could not ask for better service. A little difficult to find, you should make the effort to go to Estela. We're glad we did. Two thumbs up.

Only read if you want an in-depth analysis of the food, service, and ambiance at Estela. Summary: Good ambiance. Don't go for a reservation after 10pm because the staff is checked out and you won't get a Michelin Star experience. Flavor pairings seemed basic compared to other Michelin one star restaurants. Ambiance: Great. Dark & candlelit. Just what I want on a night out. 5 stars to this category. Service: Apparently good service stops at 10pm because the staff couldn't have cared about us less. We were never checked in on, only visited to order and receive food. To be fair, we got a 10:15pm reservation. It may have been our fault for eating dinner so late. At a regular restaurant I would have dismissed this poor late-night service, but at a Michelin star my expectation is that the service should be excellent throughout the whole evening. Food: No Wow! factor. Having been to more than 20 Michelin star restaurants from around the world (yes even Mario is jealous about how many stars I've collected), this is the first one that hasn't served a dish that has wowed me. At every other Michelin star, there is always a dish that makes me think "Wow, I have never tried anything like that before, and I could eat that forever." This one didn't only fail to do that, but disappointed me with their basic flavor pairings. We ordered 5 dishes: the olives marinated in oil, the beef tartare, the arroz negro, the ricotta dumplings, and the wagyu steak. Out of these dishes, 3 were okay, and 2 were disappointing. Highlight: arroz negro. Reminded me of Spanish paella. Good if you like paella with a crunch. Lowlight: ricotta dumplings. Buy Sargento's mozarella string cheese at the local supermarket and put it in the microwave for 15 seconds for the same effect. The wagyu and olives were good. Good not great. What makes these dishes stand out from other wagyu and olive dishes? I am still asking myself that question because nothing about them was unique. The beef tartare. Could have infiltrated a grouping of bruschetta and gone unnoticed. The beef was cut very thick, and it was overpowered by the capers and chopped onion. This dish would have deserved the lowlight if the dumplings didn't taste like string cheese. The ricotta dumplings. The mushroom slice on top was a cool addition aesthetically, but it did not add to the taste of the dish. This dish reminded me of my 10-year-old self grabbing a handful of string cheeses from the fridge. Estela, if that is what you were going for, you aced it! If not, it may help to decrease the size of the balls of cheese and pair them with stronger flavors. Overall, 3/5 stars is appropriate. I wouldn't recommend this restaurant to a friend, but I would accompany my friends to Estela if they wanted to go as a social occassion. However, I would eat beforehand.

I will never forget the first time I fell in love with endives. Thank you, Estela. Maybe it was the sommelier's expansive knowledge and the sincere customer service. Or was it the beautiful summer day and good company that possessed me to order what seemed like a silly little lettuce like thing. Estela knows endives.
Be the first to ReplyThe food was incredible.
Everything we got was amazing and flavorful. I really liked the foie gras. I've never seen seared foie gras wrapped in grape leaves. Beef tartar was unique and creative. The oysters tasted super refreshing and the pork had really good seasoning. Desserts were great too. Lychee sorbet was particularly impressive. Our drinks were just okay though. Hard to pick cocktails from the menu that we typically like. The reasons why I gave 4 stars are mostly service and how crowded the restaurant was. Our waiter was pretty cold. And the restaurant was small and all the tables were squeezed into it. My friend couldn't get out of her seat without moving the table.
Be the first to ReplyEvery star in this review is for their food.
We took our server's recommendation and shared 4-6 plates, ranked below for balance of flavor and textured mouthfeels. Fried arroz negro with squid and romesco - an extremely satisfying bite with multiple forms of crunch coming from the rice and the nuts of the romesco. Grilled Lobster with woodear mushrooms and grapes - the smokiness of the lobster really permeated each chewy ear. I'm not a fan of lobster at all, but I could eat this preparation any day! Cured trout with bergamot and dashi - the little beads provided much appreciated bursts of brine. Marinated olives - the twist of grapefruit rind was not only a great palate cleanser, but an excellent pregame choice with drinks. Sourdough miche with butter - the rustic crust is what bread cravings are made of. Kudos to the bartenders for their Halo Spritz cocktail - it was unbelievably refreshing despite its complexity. Now for the ambiance. While our corner table felt "cozy" at first tucked away from the main dining room, it became "the spot" for people to wait for the rest of their party to arrive. We soon ran out of room to be able to get up or lift a drink without elbowing someone accidentally. That was our cue to get the check and go. Alas, even a Michelin star worthy meal can't stop NYC from doing what it does on a Friday night.

TLDR: A Michelin restaurant thats worth the hype! I recently had the pleasure of dining at Estela in NYC, and it was an absolute culinary delight! The squid ink risotto stole the show with its crispy texture and burst of flavors. The persimmon salad was incredibly fresh, and the wagyu steak was nothing short of insanely flavorful and delicious. To top off the meal, the chocolate lava cake with black sesame dessert was a revelation! It's hands down the best dessert I've had in NYC, offering insane flavors and depth. The combination of black sesame, oozing lava cake chocolate base, and the perfect cream on top created a dessert masterpiece.
Be the first to ReplyWe went for dinner yesterday and was very much
We went for dinner yesterday and was very much disappointed, especially by the service. We came to the restaurant earlier than our reservation and was told we can only be seated at the bar. When I asked them to let me know if a table becomes available, they responded that that's very unlikely. However, the host told the party behind us they have the option of the bar or a table but they would need it back by 1.45hrs. I think that the fact that we weren't even given that option was very rude. When we finally got seated, our waiter was rushed and when we asked about their recommendation, they only pointed things out without explaining what they were. I had to stop them from rushing away to ask what the dish was.Lastly, when we moved from the different dishes, I was waiting for our plates and cutleries to be changed. However, that never happened and no one came by for me to ask. After a while, I gave up and continued to eat. To my surprise, when the table beside us was done with a dish, their plates and cutleries were changed. For the food itself, we ordered the tartare, the endive, and the ricotta dumplings. The tartare was good but not anything special. The bread was good though! The endive was too sour for my taste. The ricotta dumplings were the best out of the three. However, as it's quite rich, I think it's best to have just a little bit. Overall, for a Michelin restaurant, definitely very disappointing.

Estela is a small intimate restaurant. A great date spot. The service was attentive throughout our entire night and is the star of the experience. Unfortunately, much can't be said about the rest. Not much to comment on for the bread and olives, it's what you would expect. The oysters were fresh but tasted like drinking sea water, way too salty. The tartare is perhaps the best dish out of everything we got. The squid ink rice was nice as it at least helped fill the stomach rumbling, the foie gras was appetizing but an awkward experience due to it being soupy. Wrapped up with the steak, which was nice, but felt more like an appetizer than your main entree. Overall, I'm surprised by the high reviews this place received. I must be the only one crazy, but it's at 3* at best.

This place was very atmospheric, great lighting, super fun and attentive staff. Everything was delicious and portions were perfect for a small table of guests.

Love the casual yet modern vibe. Food is always interesting and layered. The service is helpful and friendly without being annoying. Their cocktails are on point. Great spot for a date or to impress a visiting friend.

I was happy to have snagged a reservation here and was looking forward to our early lunch. The space and the vibe are decidedly unfussy, but more informal than I expected. It wasn't bad at all. I just expected a little more attention from our server given the Michelin star rating. That being said, the food is excellent. I would give special kudos for the ricotta dumplings and the fried arroz negro. Also the lobster dish was fantastic. In a city with so many great dining options, Estela is a solid if not spectacular choice.

This place has a well deserved Michelin star. Very cozy date night spot. Service is great, staff all have personalities of their own and are very personable. Great spot for wine as well. Iconic dishes:Duck Foie gras Steak tartare Ricotta dumplings Black rice
Be the first to ReplyTerrible service, nice food.
My knife was literally whisked away while I was still using it - 20 minutes after sitting down. Service was rushed and crass for no reason that we could see because there were several unoccupied tables. They denied hustling tables. When we asked to speak to the manager we were told we were speaking to him - a clueless wonder who sort of apologized but not really and did nothing to remedy the situation. We were looking for a reason to leave a tip and he couldn't think of one. We have never not tipped. This was a $400 tab and someone might have liked the min $100 we would have normally left for anything approximating a good meal. This place is not deserving of any stars - NYT, Michelin or otherwise. I would leave zero stars if I could.

Took my boyfriend here for his birthday dinner and we were blown away. Food was amazing, drinks were strong and great, and the ambiance is very chic and dark. Highlight was the squid ink calamari rice and beef tartare. Good people watching too, if you're into that.
Be the first to ReplyWhen you're at a one Michelin star restaurant, you expect
When you're at a one Michelin star restaurant, you expect every dish to be delightful, surprising and fulfilling. Estela was none of these things. The endive salad was well-rounded, but felt like a mix of things put together with no real connection. Cheese, nuts, endive, olive oil lack any harmony. The truffle they used for the entree was of poor quality, and kind of ruins the dish. The black rice was pretty bad, tasting like overcooked bland rice. To add insult to injury, In the end the waiter was super rude. He rolled his eyes at us for a super simple request to get the bill and his face was filled with disdain. The space is also super cramped without and room to move your arms. Not sure how this place got its Michelin star, or has managed to keep it. I have serious questions with Michelin for allowing this place to hold a star.

TLDR: the fried arroz negro and the ricotta dumplings are two of the best dishes I've had this year. Restaurant is pretty cozy, so I don't recommend you come after shopping or with bags like we did.Came here on a weekend for lunch with a friend. I actually knew nothing about Estela before coming and I was so pleasantly surprised by how good our lunch was! We ordered the three "signature dishes" as advertised by our waiter: the endive salad, arroz negro, and the ricotta dumplings. We added the duck as well. For dessert we got the panna cotta. The fried arroz negro and the ricotta dumplings - I still think about these dishes weeks later. Two of my favorite dishes this year. I would go back just for these. I love the crispy rice texture. The dumplings were so soft and unassumingly flavorful. Great. The salad felt endless. I personally thought there was too much cheese. The duck was also good, but not super memorable. The dessert was okay. Vinegar on panna cotta was not my favorite and I gave the rest to my friend after a few bites.Service was friendly and attentive. Ambiance was casual, but you can dress up if you prefer. Restaurant is quite cozy!

... OMG. That's all. Dumplings are still my favorite thing on the savory side. The cara cara shrimp chili dish was interesting. It was tasty. Couldn't tell if it was a dessert or a fruit salad.

Wow! This place is amazing! If you really love tapas like I do, then I highly recommend coming here. The employees are very attentive and helpful. Our waiter was very educated on all of the menu items and told us what are the popular dishes that people order. This is a very cute place to go on a date night. My boyfriend and I ordered their snapper with uni and seaweed, fried arroz negro with squid and romesco, steak tartare with elderberries, steak yuzu kosho mignonette, and panna cotta. My favorites were the fried arroz negro with squid and romesco and beef tartare. Those are must orders! Everything was delicious.
Be the first to ReplyTried 3 dishes, 1 dessert, and 1 drink for lunch 2 people
Tried 3 dishes, 1 dessert, and 1 drink for lunch 2 people ($157 after 20% gratuity) on 7/23/22....it was alright I guess?Made a reservation for lunch, but there were empty tables throughout our entire meal despite it being a Saturday, not sure we really needed to. Our entire meal took maybe 1-1.5 hours, didn't feel rushed or like we were waiting, great pacing. When we showed up on time for our reservation, there were deliveries still going into the restaurant, we had to wait ~10 minutes for them to finish up before we could even get by (the entrance is tiny, no way you're going in at the same time as anyone else). Kind of weird, but maybe they don't control their delivery schedule and they were running late, I'll allow it.We were seated at our table for 2, right next to a table of 4. There was another empty table for 2 next to us that wasn't taken for our entire meal. Why not give everyone some space?Which brings us to the next point. The dining room, and the tables, and the space between the tables, are TINY. You can hear everything the table next to you is saying, and forget about getting up at any point without bothering the people next to you. There are mirrors on the walls which try and make the space look bigger, but they do nothing for the loudness of the room. I actually used the Apple Watch noise level measuring and it tipped into yellow "Loud" at times - I know you make do with what you have, but some cushions/decorations/anything might go a long way towards making it a little more tolerable.Drinks were great. I ordered the Bloody Mary and it came with a lot of pepper and Thai chili, definitely not a recipe I've had before, big fan.At this point, the server recommended that we order 4-6 dishes for the two of us. If we had followed this advice, I think we would have had to take food to go - absolutely not what I want to do on a hot NYC day. The portions are decently sized (even for the Michelin star price), go small and order more/eat dessert after. Two of our ordered dishes were big hits. We ordered two signature Estela classics, the fried arroz negro and the ricotta dumplings, and both were great. The arroz negro had a different texture every bite - my partner and I ate this one really slowly and tried to figure out the ingredients the entire time we were enjoying. The ricotta dumplings are just simple goodness, and it was a great touch for a server to bring us some complimentary bread to soak up the mushroom broth at the end.One dish missed. The "steelhead trout with sea urchin and seaweed" broke apart oddly (trout is one of the easiest fish to get to be flaky?), the sea urchin was actually used to make the sauce and therefore I could hardly even taste any of the rich, buttery, seafood-y taste that's its signature tasty goodness, and the kelp-y seaweed was drowned in a citrus-y vinaigrette. I couldn't even taste the saltiness of the seaweed, that was a super weird experience. The "panna cotta with vinegar and honey" dessert was awesome - not too sweet, not too much vanilla, not too acidic, perfect temperature for a HOT summer day in NYC. Great touch by the server to choose this moment to acknowledge our special occasion as well!I think I'd return with a bigger group to try the entire menu - it's the sort of place where you WANT to try everything. With a bigger group, you're also less likely to get bullied around with the space concerns since you'll literally be taking up more table space, and you'll definitely be able to hear everyone in your group since you can hear everything that's going on in the dining room anyways. I'd LOVE for Estela to fix the dining room to be better for small groups - I really think it'd be as simple as putting in furniture to absorb some of the loudness of a room with brick walls and mirrors. But right now, the environment definitely detracts from the food, and I'd only be back alone at the bar or in a group that'd take much of the space (and unfortunately, that'd probably be at the expense of others).
