This food made me cry with joy
This is a mind-blowing food experience. There are not many examples of food in recent times that brought a tear to my eye however estaban fid just that. Everything From beef tartar tacos to the rib eye cap was exceptional. I cannot recommend this restaurant highly enough and encourage all food enthuasts to have a tear brought to their eye too.

First time at Mexican. Only two of us. Staff very friendly, waitress took her time explaining to us how the menu worked, lots of dishes to choose from. mains quiet large serves. entrees were nice , you could have a full meal just choosing numerous entrees. Food was very good, reasonable wine list but not extensive. Avail by the glass as well as bottle.

Excellent food - loved the calamari as you could really taste the wood fired BBQ which gave it a great flavour. The pork taco's were excellent as were the lamb and chicken mains. Only point - the sauce for the lamb could have been a little more reduced so it would be thicker and more flavoursome

Great food and great service and a nice atmosphere, what more can we say! Went for dinner here with our son when visiting. We really enjoyed it. Lovely menu choices, everything we got was very fresh and tasty and the service was noticeably very good
Be the first to ReplyHidden treasure for coeliacs
An excellent hidden treasure! Coeliacs were well catered for. Meal was incredible and cocktails were great too. Atmosphere was amazing and as you are down an alley way off busy George St, you could have been in Mexico. Thank you to the staff for making this a wonderful dining experience.
Be the first to ReplyDelicious food - fun vibes!
Stopped here as a walk in for a last minute dinner on our honeymoon - the food was delicious. Unique menu and fun location down an alley - the vibes even outside were really great and the service was lovely. The server was attentive and the appetizers were amazing. Highly recommend for a fun delicious dinner!
Be the first to ReplyDelicious food, Terrific service 👍
Dropped in for an early dinner as a solo. Seated at the bar and tended by a lovely young fellow and lady. Chose the pork tacos (2 were a good amount for a small appetite female) and combined with a Mexican beer, my Monday night was terrific. Not cheap ($38 for 2 tacos and the beer), but yummy food and friendly service. Very happy.
Be the first to ReplyFantastic! One of our favorite dinners while visiting Sydney.
Leave it to the Texans to visit Sydney and find a Mexican restaurant. The food was fantastic! One of the best dinners we had while there. It is a little hard to find, and our GPS actually took us to the street behind the restaurant, but we walked through an alley out to the other side and found it. I liked the ambiance down in the basement and they have a beautiful bar with tons of tequila choices.
Be the first to ReplyGood service, average food
Service was great however food average. We had the calamari which was so fishy and not fresh. We told the waitress who was lovely about it and offered us two tacos as a replacement. We were very happy with this outcome until we had to pay for the “complimentary” tacos and off calamari! Would not go back!
Be the first to ReplyGreat food/ poor service
Basement part of the restaurant- bartender is very unpleasant and rude. Hardly could suggest any signature drinks
Be the first to ReplyIndescribable - Completely out of this world and would recommend for any mezcal and Mexican cuisine lover.
Absolutely incredible! My fiancé is a MASSIVE mezcal / tequlia fan and Mexican cuisine is were our soul resides and this place honestly knocked it put the park! The tacos and ceviche were indescribable but their 1kg wagyu ribeye is what stole the show. And as for the service - wow!! My fiancé and I are huge foodies and have visited many fine dining / high end restaurants around Australia and Sydney but the service and attention to detail at Esteban is unmatched. I have no words other than I will 100% be back and recommending this restaurant to everyone I know. INCREDIBLE!
Be the first to ReplyGreat Mexican hidden in a lane
Great underground Mexican Restaurant in the centre of the City. Is a little hard to find as it is tucked away in a lane way! Loved the ambience, cocktails and food at Esteban, so many great dishes that I am not sure what I liked best, smoked black bean dip was a great starter. Recommend going here if you love Mexican.

Amazing food selection and quality. I loved Esteban and cant wait to go back. The food was so flavoursome, I couldn’t have been any happier with the experience.

Service, food and embiance all 5 star. I'm 50 and I experienced the best steak I've had in my life. So that's a plus. :) We turned up early for our booking the staff were very accomodating sitting us at the bar prior to escorting us to our table when ready. Great moody, dark vibe, moderately noisy. Had ceviche, prawn tacos & butchers steak. All perfect. Will be back!

A fantastic restaurant perfectly located in a back alley in the city centre. Excellent food and drinks, friendly staff. We will definitely have dinner there again.
Be the first to ReplyIncredible 🙌
Quite simply one of the best meals of my life. Incredible, service, food, ambience, cocktails. All perfect! To the point we’re revisiting tonight, the following day. I don’t know how to rave about the potatoes enough… they’re just potatoes right? Stunning!
Be the first to ReplyAtmosphere And Interesting Trip To Mexico And Further South
The mood and decor were interesting and the food South American inspired and tasty. Classified as Modern Mexican it went further south , with grilled meats and vegetables. A good experience and I gave it 4.2
Be the first to ReplyBig mistake. Dark, creepy place, and no smile service or lack thereof
We came here with friends. First they told us that we didn't have any booking for 9 persons. Then the acted as if they were doing us a favor and gave us a table with two chairs short, so we squeezed in on those. The hostess was rude, borderline no hire because of the basic smile, greeting skill. Never ever going here and wouldn't recommend either
Be the first to ReplyGood service and decore, average food.
Finally got a booking that wasn't at the bar. As a couple we were placed on a very small table, in a tightly packed line with other couples. Service was very good. Drinks - well I like good beer and they had a very limited selection of average beers, and prices were 300% more then anywhere else, so I just had water because I'm not paying that for a basic lager. We ordered entries, which were reasonably good. Nice ceviche. Char grilled octopus was really bland, so we ate it without the dipping sauce to taste the meat. Then we had mains, and can't say they were special either. Little to no herbs or spices. Same quality as a regular pub meal. Chicken could've come from a supermarket deli, and lamb was bland and had to cut off chunks of fat to get some meat dripping infat. Great if you want to take photos, but I expected better food for the prices charged.
Be the first to ReplyAnother great convict stone venue in Sydney
Great venue , convict cut sandstone.
Restaurant at the end of a tight laneway right in the middle of the CBD. And very close to the State Theatre fyi.
Great food . Great original Matgeritas.
King prawn tacos . Lime and cucumber oysters. Handmade blackened corn chips. All great.
OK the dessery was only good , but it was good
Totally Disappointing
Honestly, we had the worst restaurant experience I can remember in a very long time here.
I’ll try to start positively. It’s at the end of a little lane way off George st, and the place has a cool vibe to it. I can imagine it’s a good place for a cocktail or for a group of 4-6.
Now onto reality, there is not way this is a Mexican restaurant aside from there’s lamb and seafood in every country I guess. The food wasn’t bad (not great either) but it’s totally overpriced for what you get.
Big Warning - if you are a couple, please now that you will be seated at the bar with zero privacy in front of you (from the bar staff) and literally next to you on either side, as there is zero spacing between couples. Even if you think you are booking a table. Even if they swear to the almighty that they have a great table for you, when you get there, and even if they try to write a response to this review and say otherwise … you absolutely will be seated at the bar. That’s 100% guaranteed .. and it’s terrible (unless you just wanted a drink).
So in short - if you are a couple; and you’d like a romantic dinner, and if you actually want Mexican food; don’t go here!
Highly recommend
I cannot recommend this restaurant enough! The food was fantastic and the service was perfect, cannot be faulted. We had a wonderful dinner here. The staff were great.

Fantastic experience at Esteban! Amazing Tequila menu and fabulous Margaritas too. We visited with a group of 10 and the quality and abundance of food did not disappoint. Every item on the menu was uniquely enjoyable. The chorizo tostaditas were an amazing explosion of flavour and the smoked beef shank tacos were delicious and succulent. The best bit was the dark chocolate fondant with the mandarin sorbet. A perfect combination to end the meal. Service was friendly and seamless and excellent value at $150 pp after drinks. Also worth noting that we didn't finish the meal because it was so abundant. We were full!
Be the first to ReplyModern Mexican at it's best
Thoroughly enjoyed our time at Esteban. The ambience was wonderful, we sat at a booth looking at the bar and some amazing tequila bottles. Speaking of tequila, we started off with a few Margarita's, their Reposado Patron was deliciously smooth and we found ourselves ordering more rounds. The food was fresh and fantastic, we shared everything from Wagyu Beef Taco's to Kingfish ceviche and then Chicken with Mole, Pork Belly and Rump cap. Nothing could be faulted and we left feeling full but happy. Would definitely recommend and cannot wait to go back. Just be sure to make a booking as the space is not huge.
