This a great restaurant.
It has one Michelin star, but I expect it to go to two stars soon. It is relaxed, has great food, and a wonderful staff. They are so accommodating when making choices from the menu. This is our go to restaurant when we want to treat ourselves to something special. Try it and I guarantee that you will not be disappointed.
Be the first to ReplyI walked in without reservation and seated at the bar.
Bar has more flexibility on menu since you do not have to do tasting menu and can pick a la carte. I love the ambiance and the friendliness of the staff!

The chef considers every aspect of fine dining at his Michelin rated restaurant. Service is impeccable, quiet upscale dining with a variety of exquisite tasting food , beautiful dishes and a variety of wine to choose from with a sommelier. We wanted our children to experience a top French restaurant with a tasting menu. We enjoyed the seven course "essential menu." Dined on so many tasty dishes. Absolutely my favorite was the wagyu. Best thing I have ever tasted. It's extremely pricey so save this for something very special if cost is a factor.
Be the first to ReplyRecently ate at the french style restaurant "essential"
Recently ate at the french style restaurant "essential" located on the upper west side, with my family. We decided to choose the "7 course essential menu" there are also 3 and 4 courses you can choose from as well. Overall since the food was very small portions I felt it allowed me to try a little bit of everything without feeling over stuffed. The restaurant was very clean and elegant. The service was super fast and efficent. The detailing on each of the dishes allowed such a warm welcoming experience. The duck was by far my favorite as well as the dessert. The waiter does a pristine job explaining each and every course so you know exactly what you are eating and why it taste the way it does. I do have a gluten allergy which was written on the required reservation to attend essential, they made sure everything I was eating was for me and treated my allergy with care and caution which was very appreciated. Essential is a older atmosphere as well as young couples. We wen't around 9:30 and ended at 11:30 so it wasn't very packed or overwhelming.

Incredible food, the amuse bouche was made with sweet potato and a mushroom mousse, which was astounding. The courses that followed were so flavorful, technically perfect ( the duck breast was rare, warm and crispy with melt in your mouth texture. THE sommelier, Andrea provided expert guidance on a champagne and a burgundy to accompany the meal. The atmosphere is soothe with beautiful lighting. It's quiet and bustling. Elegant and informal. Can't wait to go back!

A completely different level of experience. Should try it out.
Be the first to ReplyWow incredible dining experience.
My bf and I picked the "essential" 7 course menu. Started off with bread on the house and the mushroom cappuccino which was so unique and delicious. Out of the next few courses, my personal favorite was the langoustine. For the main meat course, my bf got the venison and I got the duck and tried each other's. I loved the duck flavor more but the venison texture was absolutely perfect. The extremely silky smooth mashed potatoes that came with the meats were unexpected but also a highlight. Finally for dessert, le gin dandy was my fav bc the flavors were so unique, never had anything like it. Aside from food, the presentation was awesome. They paid a lot of attention to geometry, always adjusting our plates and silverware into a triangle formation. And many of the dishes arrived with interesting shaped covers (not shown in pics) that made the experience feel particularly artsy. The inside of the restaurant seemed trendier, less intimate than other fine dining places I've been and there were a lot more people than I expected. I personally didn't mind that so I thought it was still an excellent vibe!
Be the first to ReplyMy boyfriend and I each ordered the essential menu.
I had to order substitutions for the sea urchin and the langoustine due to crustacean allergy. I ordered the hamachi and the octopus instead. For cocktails, we ordered the Gene Sais Pais, Helicopter, Rosalita and Harvest Highball. Our Favorite is hands down the Harvest Highball! Then for his Rosali and for mine Helicopter. We would say the foods were on the creamy, rich, heavy and salty side, which is what you would get from a French restaurant. The service was excellent. They come and clean the table every so often, refill your water bottle and fold your napkin when leaving the table. The ambiance in here is a modern cozy home like vibes. You won't be disappointed if you enjoy French cuisine!

Such an amazing experience, the staff really made us feel welcomed and the attention to detail from wines to each dish was incredible. The whole menu flowed, we decided to go with the seven course - favorites were the blue prawns, scallop, black bass, and duck - all so flavorful & delicious! They had a side dish of buttery mashed potatoes, so creamy! The desserts looked like art work, and everything was paired well with wines. Staff were so attentive, decor was very simple, clean & elegant. It's pricey but once a while it's great to be wined and dined!
Be the first to ReplyA superb new addition to the Upper West Side.
I highly recommend this restaurant for special occasions. The dishes are exceptional, though they tend to be smaller in size. Opting for the larger-sized tasting menu would be advisable.

It was nice, we went a while back before they got the Michelin star and had a great time. It's definitely quiet and intimate- not that romantic, but good if you want conversation. No complaints about the dishes

This might just be the best kept secret on the Upper West Side. Locals swear by it for a fine dining experience that doesn't feel stuffy and the dishes are one better than the next. The Langoustine was wonderful as were the Duck and Prawns. Each dish is meticulously plated and presented. This was one of the best meals I've had all year - Mind you it'll cost you a pretty penny but it's so worth it.

Service was nice except they didn't ask how my food was for 2 main course.Everything else was fine except the venison dish, meat was not over cooked by its color, but chewy, had a strong taste. Maybe considering not much ppl can take the taste of venison, the sauce was very strong, quit salty and sour. I'm not particularly picky over food, I cherish food and always try my best to finish food. But I couldn't finish the venison. I left half the meat unfinished, yet no one ask if I enjoy the dish. Was quite surprised.Would have to say for the price of the meal, I would expect a little higher in both service and quality.

Food is wonderful and the staff is friendly and professional- from the bartenders to the waiters. Modern and chic the decor is sleek but not cold. Excellent dining experience without sticker shock prices.

Excellent service and food! My 2 year old had a nice meal as well. Definitely recommend this restaurant. A true neighborhood gem.

Be the first to ReplyAbsolute 10/10!Apple, our server, was the star of the night.
Warm, inviting, incredibly knowledgeable of the menus and provided top notch service. The same could be said about the support staff who always showed the upmost attention throughout our evening. The beetroot salad, scallop and cabbage, green salad, and the foie gras were outstanding. Truly a myriad of perfectly blended flavor profiles and all presented like artwork. We loved the venison, bass, duck and pork. All were so perfectly cooked and presented and the flavors were just incredible.Don't skip on the soufflé! We're thrilled of this new neighborhood addition! Absolutely phenomenal cuisine set within an aesthetically beautiful setting that belongs in an Architectural Digest feature.10/10 - a MUST if you're a UWS local or visiting and looking for a memorable dining experience!

Headed happily back tonight for my third visit in six weeks, that's how terrific the food and hospitality are at this simply wonderful restaurant. Unpretentious yet elegant, the service is warm yet absolutely comme il faut. How brilliant to be able to dine on world class food without the usual fussiness. I'm eating my way through all the wonderful dishes on offer and can only hope I will still be able to get a reservation after this place is reviewed. A spectacular addition not only to the UWS but the entire city in a charming class of its own.

Essential by CHristophe is the best dining experience I can remember. All the food is amazing (taste and presentation), from the savory dishes to the sweets. I do not typically order dessert but was happy I ordered the souffle (perfectly made), which came with stellar mignardises. When management felt the courses were not coming out in time, they gifted us a delightful chicken consomme dish (stock was clearly and beautifully flavored with vegetables that allowed less salt with a winning effect). The wine list is well thought out and reasonably priced (I only had by the glass as I am doing a "damp February" but look forward to their bottle service in the future). The service is also amazing. All the managers and servers are smiling and clearly know they are part of something special. To top it off, the chef came to meet us and other patrons with a welcoming smile. I was enjoying the dinner too much to take pics but their website provides wonderful images.

This is a fantastic restaurant and one that the neighborhood sorely needed. The food is creative and delicious and the drink program is first class. The staff couldn't have been more charming. Everything was just so well executed. I am so happy that I can now have a spectacular meal without getting on the subway. I clearly wasn't the only one who felt this way judging by the full room of happy tables. This is my new "go-to".

Went to Essential by Christophe in late December for a nice year-end dinner and it was incredible. The food was cooked to perfection, service was knowledgeable and friendly, and we had a lovely night. We started with the hiramasa and beetroot. The beetroot was creatively served as a tartare in a borscht soup. For the second course we had the eggplant and scallops. The different flavors and textures at play with the eggplant dish were impressive. We then had the venison and poularde. The poularde is served as a stuffed chicken preparation, quite delicious. For dessert we shared the cheese plate - loved that it came with gem lettuce.
Be the first to ReplySo happy the UWS now has a truly wonderful fine dining
So happy the UWS now has a truly wonderful fine dining option. But this is more than a welcome addition to the neighborhood. It deserves to be a priority destination for anyone who cares about the highest standards of food, drink, service and all around hospitality. Leaving the elegant but welcoming dining room for a next visit, I sat at the bar, where Jose and Etienne were skilled and responsive with both knowledge and service. Every detail of the dinner was outstanding. Foie gras, chicken with black truffle consomme, an amazing skate. One of my all time favorite somms, Andrea Morris, suggested a perfect white Bordeaux. I am sure we will be back again and again.
