Highly recommend their set menu! The food is delicious and I love that they have a juice/non alcoholic pairing with their set menu. My favorites were the confit cod and hamachi. Everyone who serviced us was truly lovely and very knowledgeable of the menu.

Upon entering, I knew we were going to be in for a treat. The ambiance is lowkey, but very elegant. We ordered several things and asked our bartender what to pair them with - they should be sommelier's with how well they helped us! Wish I could remember their names, but it was overall fantastic. Highly recommend this place for great eats, amazing hangs, and lovers - my friend and I only got the great eats and that was more than we needed. Need to come back as soon as possible. Don't beat us to it!
Be the first to ReplyI was extremely satisfied with my meal here.
Only thing from tasting menu I didn't care for was the duck tart. Waitress was a sweetheart. Service was simple, but don't mistake that for bad the servers placed for food explained the dish & didn't linger which was welcome. The cabbage was the highlight of the meal. I was nervous having never experiencing Scandinavian but it was extremely approachable. If possible I'd opt for a seat on the most western side as you'll be between the gorgeous fireplace on one side & the kitchen on the other albeit a small views. One course came with a decent sized piece of bread so I doubt you'll leave here hungry. In closing it's definitely not the best tasting menu but it also is one of the cheapest.

We did a Friday night date to try the set menu and wine pairings. Our server Alexa was absolutely amazing. So personable and insane knowledge of menu & tastes. Made some wonderful recommendations! Absolutely worth the price for a wonderful experience from start to finish. Thank you Alexa!!

Just........AWFUL. Went here with my partner for a lovely dinner for NYE 2023. We've looked at the menu in advance, and we were super excited to reserve a spot at a Michelin star spot for NYE. Little did we know that we should take our Thiazide diuretics (blood pressure medications) in advance, because the food here was extremely salty. Not just "American salty", but dip-the-food-in-the-dead-sea-waters-for-a-day kind of salty. Many of the dishes served to us we simply left on the plate. I told a kitchen staff that the dish was just awful, and he didn't really care - we still paid for it... We both are foodies - we love eating at new places, and never, ever return plates back to the kitchen. This was a first for us. The staff wasn't very pleasant, either. They avoided and communication when possible. The atmosphere was nice, and the decor is cool. That said, I can go to Anthropology or Crate and Barrel for that, and for free. I don't know how much money they paid (Yelp/Google) for the reviews, or how much they paid (Michelin) for the star, but they absolutely, 100% do not worth it. Will never go back, and will recommend everyone I know to avoid (unless they want a heart attack, of course).

Elske, borrowing its name from the Danish word "to love," a culinary hot spot in Chicago's West Loop, beckons with an enchanting entrance--a courtyard fireplace and candle-lit door--setting the tone for a special dinner. The open kitchen, my love language, reveals the culinary mastery of David and Anna Posey. Their modern American cuisine, infused with Danish influences, is a harmonious dance of simplicity and seasonality. The accolades speak volumes, with a Michelin Star gracing Elske every year from 2017 to 2023. The Poseys, a culinary power couple, have garnered recognition from the James Beard Awards, Jean Banchet Awards, and more. Anna Posey, the pastry virtuoso, has earned accolades like the Jean Banchet Award for Pastry Chef of the Year. David Posey, the Executive Chef, boasts a rich history, including a Michelin Star for Blackbird Restaurant and a James Beard Award Finalist for Rising Star Chef. Elske offers a curated tasting menu as well as à la carte options. The offerings are a celebration of love for gastronomy. This is not just dining; it's love shared to others made by a culinary duo whose passion and skill are evident in every dish. I'd say they got the name right!

Who knew risotto made with celery could be something you'd want to eat every single day. Elevated comfort food.

It took about 10 minutes for a server to attend to me once seated, although the restaurant was not packed. I ordered the oat porridge sourdough with cultured koji butter as well as the smoked fjord trout with golden beets, orange, sesame and green tea. The sourdough was wonderfully warm, dense and nutty. The Koji butter was delightfully funky. The smoked fjord trout was unbelievably tender with a hint of smokiness cut through by the sweetness and tang of the citrus and beets. I was originally charged $30 for the trout, although the printed menu reflected a price of $29. I was told by the server that their system had been recently updated, although they did not update the printed menu. It was resolved quickly.

My wife and I ordered the set menu and wine tasting for my birthday and it was absolutely fantastic. I will be thinking about the duck tart and the swordfish for a long time. The dessert is primally cozy and I will be going back and asking for it when my bones are cold in February. All of the staff were lovely. They were warm and welcoming and obviously passionate. It is a really cute minimalist space and the fire outside really sets the location apart for fall and winter dining.

So my girlfriend had a few drinks around the corner at another restaurant. I have literally 1 martini at the establishment and gather her to make sure she's ok. We head to Elske for my grandmas 86th birthdayServer not only offers a drink to myself as my girlfriend says she doesn't want anything, refuses to even offer us food Don't go here, nothing but socialist scumbags who love to decide what's right
Be the first to ReplyCame for dinner on a Friday night and had the set menu with
Came for dinner on a Friday night and had the set menu with the juice pairing! Elske is one of the more affordable Michelin restaurants in Chicago, with an a la carte menu that you can order off of instead of the set menu.- The snacks (Tea of lightly smoked fruits and vegetables, Daikon radish with sorrel butter and cured egg yolk on rugbrød, Fried brandade with trout roe and molasses): None of these really hit for me. The "tea" was more of a smoky, heavy, savory, broth which I personally didn't love, and the radish and rugbrød was way too salty for me. The fried brandade was definitely the best out of these.- Golden beet stuffed with quark, salted apple, puffed barley, and dill: I was unimpressed by this. The foam was honestly unnecessary and not my favorite texture to eat. The flavors of the dish were good, though a bit on the salty side.- Roasted sablefish with shrimp, cauliflower, and marigold: this was both my and my partner's favorite dish of the night! The dish had much more than the picture shows-lots of shrimp and fish buried underneath. The fish was roasted to be nice and tender, and the flavor was wonderful. The cauliflower and other elements of the dish complemented it perfectly, both texture and flavor wise!- Duck liver tart with salted ramp and toasted buckwheat: this one felt like it was trying a bit too hard to be creative, and at the expense of the overall dish. The duck liver was delicious, as was the crust, but duck liver is such a rich texture and flavor that even the small tart was difficult to finish. The generous portion would have been better enjoyed with a greater ratio of crust (or maybe something like a cracker) to the liver.- Grilled duck breast and sausage with dried fruits and fennel, served with a parker house roll: this dish was a mixed bag of good and bad. I thought the grilled duck breast was delicious--it was very tender and flavorful, and the skin on top was the right amount of crisp and fatty. My partner's, however, was noticeably more well done (we did not ask for them to be cooked in any specific way) and therefore a bit tougher and different flavor. The sausage was a bit dry and I would personally have liked it to have more fruits, since the dish was essentially just two very solid pieces of meat. The fennel was a good complement, as were the sauces paired with the dish. The parker house rolls were amazing. So buttery, soft and tasty!- Frozen anise jelly with mint: meant to be a sort of palate cleanser, I thought it was interesting! A very dense jello, kind of a fudge-like consistency. The anise and mint flavors were both prominent, and I thought the unique pairing was actually very yummy.- Toasted yeast ice cream with date molasses, apples, and a chicory cruller: Absolutely. Delicious. I loved this dessert so much! The ice cream was a wonderful texture and flavor, and paired so well with all of the other ingredients (buried at the bottom). The chicory cruller was the perfect sweetness, and was appreciably warm and fresh. It paired so well with the ice cream, and this dessert was a wonderful way to finish off the meal.Juice pairings:- White grape, yeast, anise: we were told this was meant to mimic a white wine. We enjoyed this one a lot! The drink was a little fizzy and with a topping of foam, and the white grape flavor was delicious.- Apple, juniper, whey, spruce: good, but unmemorable. Pretty much what you might expect from a drink with these ingredients, but tasted kind of like something that could be bought in a store.- Earl grey, orange, clove, apricot: this was by far our favorite drink. Delicious, not too sweet, complex flavors, and paired wonderfully with the dish (the roasted sablefish).- Beet, pomegranate, shiitake, lapsang souchong: we were told this was meant to mimic a red wine. I see that the beet was probably crucial to this in providing the color, but it really overwhelmed the smell and taste of the drink. We didn't bother finishing this one.- Pear, chamomile, miso, elderflower: good combination of flavors but it had an almost syrupy sweetness that made it hard to drink, so we also didn't finish this one.Overall, I think that Elske was an enjoyable experience. However, at the price point, and for a Michelin-starred establishment, I expected more from the dishes, and the service + ambience were relatively average (the tables were very close together, to the extent that I could very easily eavesdrop on the two conversations to my left and right). I did notice that a lot of the other guests were ordering off of the a la carte menu, so I would possibly be open to coming back and trying some of those items (which looked great)!

My husband and I came this evening to Elske for the first time and the experience was overall impeccable. We did the a la carte menu and ordered 5 dishes total (and 2 desserts) and left feeling comfortably full. The ambience is great, the space is beautiful; and the staff is incredibly kind and accommodating . The stand out dishes were the the steamed halibut (which was just added to the menu) , the rye-diatori (this was hands down my favorite dish, incredibly rich), and the charred leek.

Some highs and lows, but we enjoyed our meal overall and this is one of the more affordable Michelin starred tasting menus in Chicago. Highs: the yeast ice cream with molasses for dessert was the clear winner for me and potentially the best ice cream I've ever eaten. The Parker house rolls and fennel purée that came with the duck course were also amazing. The palette cleanser was also a delicious and refreshing surprise. Lows: the duck breast itself and the fruit sausage it came with were a miss for me. The breast and skin were tough to cut and the fruit sausage was a bit dry and didn't love the flavors. Also really liked the fish itself but the cauliflower it came with was underwhelming.Service was superb (shoutout Monica) and the juice pairing was really interesting and fun. We live in the area and want to come back and give a la carte a try.
Be the first to ReplyI have such mixed feelings when it comes to Elske.
My boyfriend and I got the tasting menu and were loving every course so much until it came to the duck. I guess we should've expected it because earlier in the night the table next to us actually told their waiter that the duck was too tough and I noticed that they had barely eaten any. This was by far the worst quality ingredient let alone meat I have ever been served at a Michelin restaurant. It didn't really make sense because most of it looked like it had a good cook as you can see but it was the toughest piece of meat ever. They gave us good knives yet it still took me 2 minutes basically saw off a piece. The flavor was off and it was basically impossible to chew, my boyfriend and I both only had two bites. Although, I absolutely loved the sablefish and the golden beet courses. I honestly loved everything other than the duck which was really unfortunate.
Be the first to ReplyIncredibly underwhelmed, especially for a Michelin star
Incredibly underwhelmed, especially for a Michelin star experience. We celebrated our anniversary dinner here with the tasting menu + wine pairings. Service and timing were just a huge miss which was super unexpected. It started strong, but lacked follow up (e.g., things we discussed adding on at the start of the meal were never revisited and as the meal went on we received less and less attention). About halfway through we had a 20 minute wait in between two of the courses with no one coming by the table. When the course arrived we checked in on timing for the rest of it - and the next three courses literally all landed on the table at the same time. Then when the bill was dropped off no one ever spoke to us again- so we just got up and left once we paid. The food was pretty good but did not make up for the lackluster experience and service for the second half of the meal. When you don't get out for many kidless date nights (and especially not special occasions) you get pretty excited for a great experience and this was not it.
Be the first to ReplyElske had a great vibe.
The staff is polite and attentive. Cocktails were fantastic, which is to be expected at restaurants of this caliber. I thought the menu was more affordable than I expected. We ordered the charred leeks, roasted skate wing, and sunchoke tortellini. The leeks were smothered in a sauce that was unappetizing to look at and masked the flavor of the leeks. The skate wing had an odd texture that I couldn't really get past. It was almost slimy rather than flakey like most cooked fish. The best part about the meal was the tortellini. I think if I were to go again, then I would stick to the pastas. Overall, I think Elske is a tad overrated, but doable if you live in the area and want a nice quaint date night.
Be the first to ReplyHad the tasting menu for my birthday dinner.
One of the best meals I've had in a long time. Price was reasonable for the quality and creativity of food. Wine pairings were amazing and interesting. Dining room is loud but comfortable. Service was friendly, helpful, and not rushed. It was a long meal. Every dish was memorable and there were no gimmicks. Just delicious and interesting flavors. I'll be back!
Be the first to ReplyElske is one of 22 Michelin starred restaurants in Chicago,
Elske is one of 22 Michelin starred restaurants in Chicago, but is probably the most reasonably priced. Unlike most of the other Michelin restaurants, you could choose to order a la carte instead of being forced into an expensive tasting menu with even more overpriced wine pairings. The ambiance is definitely more on the minimalistic / casual side, but the menu still had the same creativity and culinary sophistication as any other fine dining establishment. I watched the Chefs David and Anna on an episode of Chef's Night Out and the atmoshphere totally fit with their personalities. It was like foodie meets hipster without the pretentious atmosphere.I had no idea about traditional Scandinavian dishes or flavors, so I was coming into the meal with no expectations. We decided to go the a la carte route, which I would highly recommend. Each dish was about $15-30, so you could actually get a decent amount of food for the less than the tasting menu at $115 per person. Our server recommended we order around 3 dishes per person, and it turned out to be more than enough food to fill our appetites. Publican Quality Sourdough w/ cultured koji butter - This puts usual bread baskets to shame. We got an entire sourdough loaf that felt like it came straight from the oven. The bread was incredibly soft inside and we slathered that creamy butter on every inch. Belgian endive salad - It was a simple salad that was just beautifully presented with the endive leaves aligned in an aesthetic formation. There was a medley of flavors and textures: creamy dressing, sweet and tart pickled raisins balanced out with crispy walnuts. Charred leeks with toasted oats, covered in creamy hollandaise sauce - As a huge meat lover, I was shocked that so much flavor could come from vegetables. The char on the leaks created a bold flavor, and that creamy sauce on top was pure buttery richness. Sunchoke tortellini with matsutakes, pancetta, juniper - I usually hesitate to use the word umami too often, but this dish can be described as umami overload. The mushroom flavor was present in every bite, and that pan sauce was just amazing.Grilled venison with buckwheat agrodolce - I've never had venison before, but it basically tasted like a super tender steak. Not gamey at all. I always love a good meat and potatoes dish, and this was one of the heartier dishes of the night.Stuffed chicken leg with turnips and chicken veloute - The chicken was super tender and paired with a super rich gravy. There was a mound of something that looked like vermicelli noodles, which seemed a little out of place, but I guess balanced out the strong flavors of the rest of the dish.Sunflower seed parfait with sour honey and bee pollen crumble - It was more like a peanut butter cheesecake rather than what I pictured a parfait to be. The honey was surprisingly vinegar-like, but wasn't as strong when mixed with the rest of the ingredients. Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed our dinner at Elske. You can get a Michelin quality meal at a super affordable price point. Reservations are easy to snag and most importantly the food is unique and delicious.
Be the first to ReplyI dined at Elske to celebrate a friend's birthday and we
I dined at Elske to celebrate a friend's birthday and we both decided on the set menu for dinner. The staff was very accommodating and even brought out a slice of vanilla ice cream cake. I actually felt quite full after all the courses had been served, but it was not surprising given how many consecutive protein-heavy courses were served in a row. Here are my thoughts on some of the dishes:-Duck Liver Tart: I thought the presentation of this dish was very cute - the contrast of the green tart with the pinkish duck liver on the inside was nice; however, I was not a fan of the ratio of duck liver to the actual tart "dough." Duck liver is extremely rich and the large amount of it was a bit overwhelming. I felt as though I needed some sort of cracker or bread to help me appreciate it fully.-Halibut: while the actual halibut itself was a bit on the saltier side, I did appreciate that it was flavored quite nicely and not bland like some whitefishes can be. The kohlrabi added some nice contrasting textures with each bite as well.-Duck Breast: at this point, this felt like our fourth main course in a row that was heavy on the flavors and we were feeling quite stuffed already. The duck breast itself was a bit tough and the accompanying side meat dish was also pretty average. The bread that was served was nice and fluffy though.-Frozen Fennel Jelly: I must say I was kind of dreading this course in fear that it would taste like a bad Turkish delight, but I was pleasantly surprised as it was actually a very nice palate cleanser and refreshing. The anise flavor reminded me of a Chinese candy from my childhood.-Toasted Yeast Ice Cream: I enjoyed this dessert as I liked the strong toasty flavor in each bite. The molasses was not overwhelming and added just the right amount of sweetness. There were a few courses that were quite tasty and stood out to me, but overall I did think that the order of the courses could have been spread out more evenly to distribute the heavier meats and proteins.
