Best in class Nordic taste in Chicago
great fine dining option in Chicago, we visited Elske for our wedding anniversary celebration and enjoyed their great Nordic dishes in a Michelin style serving. Seabass is highly recommended
Be the first to ReplyUnforgettable evening
Unforgettable evening with family to celebrate...life. The food was extraordinary- honestly. did not know striped bass could taste so amazing. The sunflower butter dessert - as per our server - was out of this world and so unusual (do not be deterred if you, like me, are not a fan of licorice). The maitake mushrooms, stracci with cherries, even something as simple as chicken, so original and full of unique flavors. There is something here for everyone- my very foodie family and less adventurous me (though Elska has inspired adventure). Beyond the food, the setting is lovely and quiet, and we spent 4 hours enjoying everything, the ambiance, the fire, the food, the wine, the impeccable service and above all being alive with people you love.
Be the first to ReplyIt wasn’t a meal, it was an experience. Wow. Elske 👍
Elske did not disappoint. Wow. It was tough to decide whether to take advantage of the beautiful courtyard dining option or watch the magic happen in the kitchen casually seated at the bar. Our delightful bartender made us happy we chose the bar and I suspect if we’d chosen the al fresco courtyard dining, something equally special would have occurred. We started with the Gouda and honey which proved Elske understands a little of something goes a long way in terms of flavor. The honey was an amazing accompaniment. Ahi was new that night to the menu and proved a great choice. My husband described the smoky flavor as a “wait for it” type moment, the flavors just kept coming. I had the confit maitake which was creamy and had great texture with fava beans. You’re making a mistake if you leave without dessert. We got to try all four and you can’t go wrong. Wow.
Be the first to ReplyMichelin worthy food and service
I had a wonderful experience at Elske. Here are a few highlights of what I and my two dining partners had to eat: (1) Whitefish brandade with fried potato and trout roe. The brandade was a small rectangle crispy on the outside, soft and moist inside, with the roe garnish on top. The texture and flavor were both wonderful. (2) Veal sweetbreads with asparagus, watercress, and curried lime. The sweetbreads were cooked sous vide, then lightly coated with finely ground panko, then lightly fried to crisp the exterior. Heavenly! Some of the best sweetbreads I’ve ever had. (3) Fermented black bean agnolotti with spring peas, braised morels, and garlic chives. A light, very flavorful, thoroughly enjoyable preparation that shouted “Springtime.” We had seven other dishes shared between the three of us, and there wasn’t a loser, or even a mediocre dish, in the lot. They all were creative and prepared with great finesse. I had a cocktail to start (poblano tequila, mezcal, genepy, cream sherry) and, with our server's assistance, selected a bottle of Frenchtown Farms ‘Indigeaux’ to have with the meal. The cocktail was creative, complex, and balanced, The wine had good fruit without being overconcentrated. Both the cocktail and the wine were great choices. The service was also exceptional. Our server was very knowledgeable about all the dishes, cocktails, and wines, and the many dishes we ordered were expertly paced. Elske clearly deserves its Michelin star and, as a Seattle resident, I only wish that I didn’t have to wait for my next trip to Chicago to eat at Elske again.
Be the first to ReplyA disappointing dinner
I was so excited to get a reservation here on my last trip to Chicago. But the tasting menu with wine pairing was dull and disappointing. What was good: 1. The service. The wait staff is very attentive and capable of keeping the food and wine going out to your table, even with a full restaurant They were professional and did a good job describing each of the dishes. 2. Very accommodating to special requests. I’m a pescatarian, but allergic to shrimp, and they did a great job altering the tasting menu for me. 3. Some of the food, specifically the sable fish, tortellini, and ice cream, were very good. 4. The best wine was the Pinot from France. The not good: 1. Much of the food was not interesting, lacked flavor, or just didn’t blend well. For example, there were 2 dishes with thinly sliced raw vegetables on top. Cooking these would have added so much flavor to that food!! Another dish (the smoked trout) had cracked barley in it and it was so hard, I though I chipped a tooth. The smoked trout was fishy and even though I didn’t eat it, no one asked me why. In fact, I was never asked how I was enjoying any of my food. 2. The wines. All I can think of to describe them is uninspired and lacking depth. I was hoping for a much better line up of wines. 3. The noise level. I was dining solo, but the noise was really loud. Yes, it was a full restaurant, but the acoustics are not good in this high ceilinged space. 4. The tables are VERY close together! Even with the noise level, I could hear every single word of the couple’s conversation next to me. Overall, a very disappointing dinner experience at Elske for me. It’s the first time I’ve eaten at a Michelin starred restaurant where I’ve still been hungry after a tasting menu. In retrospect, I wonder if it would have bern better to order off the regular menu. Maybe it was an off night? I don’t know. But for me, it was the least favorite of all my tasting menu experiences across the globe.
Be the first to ReplyLovely evening in the private dining room
I reserved the private dining room on a Saturday evening so that our group of 10 women could celebrate my future daughter-in-law in style. The fireplace and candles added to the relaxing atmosphere as we enjoyed our hors d'oeuvres on the comfortable couches. I had chosen the tasting menu for our meal which we ate seated around a large table so that we could all converse together. The selections were unusual, memorable, and delicious. Our server was attentive and helpful. The one thing missing was an explanation of the dishes as they were served. A visit from the chef would have been nice, too.
Be the first to ReplySuch A Disappointment
I was so disappointed in the food and the lack of attention paid to the small details. We opted to experience the prefixed menu and it was for sure a huge disappointment. Not only was the food bland and not to the standard of Michelin quality, but we were never asked what was wrong when our server picked up our half eaten dishes after each course. Not sure how this restaurant has maintained its Michelin star.
Be the first to ReplyExcellent and memorable. Good value for star Michelin.
Excellent tasting menu. The non-alcoholic pairing is a great experience (more than the wine pairing). Very nice patio for outdoor dining -the chairs are not very comfy. Attentive and effective staff. Definitely worth its Michelin Star. About 1h30 and $215 per person all included.
Be the first to ReplyGreat tasting menu and relaxed atmosphere
With friendly and attentive staff, we felt relaxed from the moment we walked into the restaurant. We had the tasting menu, one vegetarian and one fish/meat, with wine pairing. The food was amazing and great descriptions given by the waiter and chefs who presented each course. The only minor change I would suggest would be to have a bit longer between courses as they came out quite quickly. I would highly recommend this great restaurant.
Be the first to ReplyThe Poseys know how to prepare a Michelin-type dining experience
One Michelin star for the last six years tells you all you need to know about Elske, the elegant Scandinavian-inspired restaurant in Chicago's West Loop. Located at 1350 West Randolph Street, east of Ogden Avenue and Union Park, it is the brainchild of David and Anna Posey. David is executive chef and co-owner. He earned a Michelin star at the now shuttered Blackbird before opening Elkse. Anna is pastry chef and co-owner. She earned a Jean Banchet Award as Pastry Chef of the Year. How's that for a winning combination? Open from 5:30 to 9 on Sunday, Wednesday and Thursday and 5:30 to 9:45 on Friday and Saturday, Elkse offers diners a choice--set menu or a la carte. The set menu includes duck liver tart, steamed halibut, roasted lamb saddle and sausage, grilled fjord trout and cheesecake. My wife and I opted for a la carte with aged gouda with honey, peach jelly and crackers and Belgian endives to start. For entrees, we chose roasted black bass with shrimp and fried whitefish. Also on the menu were smoked sturgeon, grilled quail and coulotte steak. For dessert, we shared dark chocolate sorbet and raspberry and rosehip-coconut milk sorbet. Makes you wonder what the Poseys will do next to earn another Michelin star.
Be the first to ReplySuperb Carry-Out
During COVID-19, Elske has been offering carry-out options on weekends. We've ordered it twice and have been very impressed with the quality of food and presentation; it's definitely the best carry-out we've had from a Chicago establishment during COVID-19, and it's worth the price point. Each meal has come with a wonderful entree (the salmon was particularly delicious) and side dish or salad. And the desserts!; they are one of my favorite parts of Elske when it's open for dine-in and what the pastry chef has assembled during COVID-19 has been delightful. We also ordered a cheese board, and it was also tasty. They are also offering some wonderful wines and very affordable prices. Can't wait to return in-person, but kudos to Elske for the excellence they have delivered in trying circumstances.
Be the first to ReplyDelightful Night
We went here with a friend on a cold Saturday night in January 2020. Lovely experience; it was great to see, a few years after opening with a splash, the restaurant maintaining a high-quality service and dining experience.
The space was great; it's simple but inviting and true to the Scandinavian vibe suggested by the name. Service throughout the meal was attentive; our waiter knew the menu well and was very casual in his approach, which made the meal fun.
We ordered off of the a la carte menu vs. the tasting menu, simply because we were more drawn to items on the tasting menu. Dishes were beautifully (and typically simply) presented. Standouts were the salt-cured anchovies, wonderful on their own or with the delicious bread; the raw aged gouda with apple jam and simple crackers; the bay scallops, with a perfect sear; and the pastas (we ordered all three)! Desserts, always a standout, were yummy too, especially the dark chocolate pudding with bread and balsamic. And the cocktails were lovely, including a winter spritz that was a light start to the meal.
Highly recommended.
Like nothing else
From the time we arrived until our last bite of dessert we enjoyed our experience. We arrived early, ordered a drink and sat outside by a well stoked fire. Very romantic. Everything we ordered was perfection. The bread is rustic and crunchy served with homemade butter. We ordered octopus, tender and delicious. I couldn’t decide which I wanted to be my last taste, the tender and juicy wagu beef or the crispy sea bass. Both amazing. Service was attentive and all staff was friendly.
Be the first to ReplyBeats the hype!
The tasting menu is the way to go here! Each course was thoughtful and perfectly executed, the smoked sturgeon was easily one of the best pieces of fish I've had anywhere.
Be the first to Replycozy & vegetarian friendly
seated before our reservation time:) shared several dishes with 2 friends...all was fantastic. seasoned well and the bread was delish!
Be the first to ReplyOutstanding!
Everything about this place is A+! The bartender makes the best drinks ever! And he will make you anything, on or off the menu! The greeters and servers are incredibly sweet and helpful, especially when selecting items from the menu that were new to us. From our experience, I am sure there is not anything that isn’t supura! This restaurant is a little out of the normal tourist area, but it is worth it to Uber it over!
Be the first to ReplyScandinavian-inspired cuisine in beautiful modernist setting
Elske is truly a unique find in Chicago's fine dining scene. It serves Scandinavian-fusion cooking, inspired by the tastes of Sweden, Denmark and such, but with a light, Alice Waters inspired California spin. We ordered from the a la carte menu and enjoyed the six medium-sized plates that we were served. Elske doesn't shy away from serving more unusual fare such as duck hearts; they were absolutely delicious. Don't miss the Publican bread served with rich, slightly sour cultured butter....absolutely delicious. They even provide a Swedish wooden butter spreader with the course.
The service was also reminiscent of an Alice Waters restaurant such as Chez Panisse: attentive but relaxed and knowledgable. There were a few too many different waiters delivering the plates for my taste, but that's a minor complaint.
The setting is beautifully modern and reminded us of Southern Californian restaurants we've eaten in: elegant, light and open. There is a beautiful outdoor patio when the weather permits and the windows and doors were open and hidden on the night we dined there. Luckily the restaurant is located at the quiet end of Randolph Street in the West Loop, so there is very little traffic or noise.
Worth a visit and a return.
Wonderful Experience!
Six friends visited on a beautiful August evening. The outdoor area is so charming...but not room for six people. However, restaurant sides were open, so we had a lovely semi-outdoor experience. Service and food were excellent. We shared several dishes - cheese & crackers, Publican bread were both fabulous. Belgian endives salad was outstanding. Also absolutely loved the grilled tuna, rigatoni with sweet corn, pork belly, soft shell crab and grilled wagyu. Save room for excellent desserts - sorbets, sunflower seed parfait and milk chocolate custard were so worth the calories. Come with several people so you can sample many dishes...it would be hard to choose only three or four.

Mid-week business dinner in upper level private dining room. Classy decor with great ambience. Understated, friendly and helpful waitstaff. The food was superb. Wonderful flavours - not too heavy - all beautifully balanced. Enjoyed some beautiful wine as well. Can highly recommend.
