Elcielo Restaurant Washington D.C. Reviews from The Last Year
This review is long over due.
Hubby and I had a date night here and were very excited about it! We had been to "La Cosecha" (the Latin marketplace next door) a few times but had never realized El Cielo was right next door. La Cosecha has a great Latin vibe and great eats so we were eager to be blown away by El Cielo. I'm all about first impressions and details-- specially when it comes to high end restaurants or Michelin restaurants, I believe the focus should be on creating an unforgettable experience for all the senses, not just taste. So upon entering El cielo I was pretty underwhelmed by the aesthetics and ambiance of the place, it looks like every other modern cafe with not much attention to detail, specially for it being a Latin restaurant, they could have done a better job at transporting you to vibrant Colombia with the design. The bathroom looked like it belonged in a "hole in the wall" restaurant, not a Michelin one, so I was highly disappointed. But that was only the first impression, I was eager to try the food and be blown away... And unfortunately we weren't. The presentation of the food was the best thing out of everything- they have done a great job at creating beautiful plates. But for the most part the dishes were forgettable. Nothing was amazing or tasted like something we had never eaten before. Service was decent. Overall we had a nice evening.
Amazing service, food, and experience! Without a doubt one
Amazing service, food, and experience! Without a doubt one of my favorite restaurants in DC.
Best dining experience I've ever had.
Loved the chocolate hand bath and coffee experience that made you feel like you were sipping coffee in cloudy Columbian Mountains. Food was superb and so interesting
4 stars for a pretty solid Columbian restaurant experience.
We were looking to grab a nice dinner one evening and (after getting through the website's annoying popup on every page) saw that El Cielo had some availability for the Chef Choice option. I booked us for 9pm (which the restaurant called soon after and moved us back to 8pm), and we soon after headed over to the Union Market location. We arrived at the venue to find a very nice dining area with tall ceilings, a bar in the back, and generally solid decorating. Per my friend who previously dined at the venue, the ala carte and Chef Choice option are in the front of the restaurant, while the The Experience 20 course option and bathrooms are in the back area of the restaurant. We took our seats and our waiter came over to take our order. He was generally fairly pleasant and provided us with solid service throughout the night. He handled and/or explained most of the dishes either by himself or with the assistance of the chef or an assistant. In terms of the dining, we started off with cocktails (which were good) and a spring blossom sorbet, which was a nice start. We then moved on fairly quickly to the truffle bunuelo and tuna, peanut, and yuzu dishes, which were each quite solid. Next, we underwent the "chocotherapy" part of the dining, which essentially involves washing your hands in some chocolate. A little weird, but I guess it was a nice activity to try out. Soon after finishing our chocotherapy, we received our tree of life, corn broth, and shrimp aji. In terms of the tree of life, which included several dips and an awesome bread style tree, it made for a great snack for all of us to share and admire. in terms of the corn broth and shrimp aji, the former wasn't really that great while the latter was quite tasty and memorable. The main issue that we ran into for this meal (and thus the reason for the paragraph separation in this review) was timing. It took quite a while for our next dish (the bison) to come out. The bison was served by the chef and was quite good, so we were ok with the wait at that point. We then again waited a pretty long amount of time for the dessert dish (the cholao). However, the dessert was quite good and probably one of my favorite dishes of the meal, so we again were ok with the wait. We then waited about 20-30 more minutes for the final "dish" in the tasting, which were rose petals that essentially were moisturizer for our hands. The check took another 10-15 minutes, making the last 4 courses of the tasting take more than half our 3 and 1/2 hour time at the venue. My guess is that the timing was thrown off due to coordination with The Experience, but other reviews show that this is a problem that the venue really needs to consider fixing. Overall, El Cielo provided us with a pretty solid meal. The venue, service, and food overcame the timing issue for the most part.
I'm writing this immediately in the car after my 4th visit.
I never write reviews but they continue to innovate every time I've dined there. This is the embodiment of how every country should hope to have their cuisine represented. They have consistent 3-Michelin level service with immaculate presentation for each course. The 22-course menu is honestly an insane value because of how unbelievably full you will be walking out. The 10-course is a perfect balance that goes toe to toe with any other menu at that price point in DC. You will not be disappointed leaving, you will just be excited to plan another trip back.
BEST fine dining experience in DC.
I dream of the food when I'm not eating it. The service is immaculate. The plating is creative. 100/100 stars.
Fantastic experience, service was above and beyond, from
Fantastic experience, service was above and beyond, from booking and accommodating our changes, to the last course. The food was spectacular. Would definitely recommend. We went on a Wednesday for the short experience and found it to be just right. Slightly more intimate because it wasn't crowded and not too late on a weekend evening.
I'm still in awe at how amazing this dinner was! Came here
I'm still in awe at how amazing this dinner was! Came here for Valentine's dinner, and the amount of detail in everything - from the moment you walk in to the food and service - was phenomenal! The tasting menu we had was called "The journey", and rightfully was a culinary journey the entire way through. We decided to do the drink pairing with dinner and have no regrets doing so; I don't drink often anymore and have a pretty low tolerance to the burn of alcohol but even I found 2 wines I loved. This dinner was a sensory journey, I don't want to spoil anything but I will tell you the dinner is very interactive with the food in ways you don't expect. I loved learning about Columbia's history and how it's expressed through their food, and I was delighted to taste fruits I've never had together like Yuzu and lemon in their sorbet. This dinner was so good I've decided to learn how to make Colombian food at home, and I can't say enough great things about ALL the staff. Every person we interacted with was wonderful, our server was very knowledgeable about each plate, and the sommelier was kind enough to answer any questions we had about the wines. This is a great place to go to for a date night or any special occasion, I look forward to coming back!
Service, atmosphere, and whimsy were all fantastic.
Interacting with the food was fun and allowed us to play and chat. And I got a beautiful color-changing cocktail that was delicious. However, We do fancy tasting menus every year, and this might be the first time I left without a sense of pure elation. It felt like the food was more about the show than the taste. This is obvious in a course like chocotherapy where this is purposeful, but was disappointing in the cheese bread tree of life, for example, when it seemed like the food experience should match the presentation. There were several courses that did not wow me on flavor and texture, despite how pretty everything was. The first few bites blew the rest of the meal away with a delicate, playful sorbet and delicious and strange mushroom ball bites. Empanadas were fun and yummy, and then courses started getting less delicious. There was a soup and pate course that was light on flavor. The mashed potatoes with the main course were inedibly gluey, the clear worst of the evening. The dip'n dots-style dessert was unpleasant to eat, and the anniversary chocolate mousse was bland. With the anniversary package also comes a photo of us, which is so dark, you can barely see us. Ending on a positive again, the staff was wonderfully attentive, we were served quickly and had the courses explained well, and left feeling cared for by the team that worked with us. I am just used to being wowed with every bite at a Michelin star tasting, and here I left a bit underwhelmed.
I decided to have El Cielo be my main birthday celebration
I decided to have El Cielo be my main birthday celebration for the year and I can definitely say that I enjoyed myself tremendously. The venue allowed for an intimate feel while also allowing us all to not feel like the different tables were on top of each other. The service was impeccable (the only hiccup being that they didn't let us know that we would have to tell them how we wanted our bison cooked well in advance). Lastly, the quality and execution of the meal were amazing. We opted for the twenty course option, which allowed us to sample a variety of bites which were rooted in Colombian flavors. Some of the favorites were the passion fruit toddy (a nice warm and tangy start to the night), the tapioca and fois gras cube (which was crispy and not too rich), the tuna "empanada" (the presentation alone is definitely worth getting this), and the ceviche (tangy, fresh and overall excellent) were my favorite savory items. Although all of the desserts were great, my favorite were the pumpkin and sapto cone and the cholao. Although most of the menu suited my tastes I found some of the flavors to be either very similar or repetitive. A lot of the items had a tangy and fruity quality. I also found the last dessert (the guava tart and tamarind profiterole) to be underwhelming. The flavors were complimentary (but again tangy), but beyond the dry ice element the desert itself seemed very simple for a venue which wowed us so much at the start of the dinner. Overall, I enjoyed myself, however I probably will not be back for more (4/5).
This place is next level, the food is amazing and service
This place is next level, the food is amazing and service is awesome. The food is so well thought out and executed ! I would highly recommend
Beautiful, creative dishes that were very delicious.
If given the chance, I would return. I thought the artistry and thought that went into each dish was great. The food was creatively displayed and really felt like they were telling a story. The experience was very memorable and the food tasted delicious. I would 100% come back if I had another event to celebrate!
I really loved all the food and drinks here, and everyone
I really loved all the food and drinks here, and everyone was so nice. We did the 13 course meal--everything was super inventive and always a play on something, which we loved. I will say two things majorly hindered us from enjoying our evening more. One was the timing--I didn't get my cocktail until the 3rd course, and they were pushing us through the courses way too fast. My friend would be done with her course and I wasn't yet, or vice versa, and they took that as a sign to bring the next course while one of us was still eating the previous one. We didn't have any time to talk unless we just stopped eating (while we were hungry!) to prevent them from bringing another course through. The second thing is it's actually an 11 course meal--I don't want to spoil the surprise, and the other two courses are nice/fun, but it's not to eat. I don't think I would come back for a full sit-down meal again but I might come back to try the cocktail flight at the bar.
My husband and I celebrated our first anniversary at El
My husband and I celebrated our first anniversary at El Cielo on November 19th, 2023. I chose that restaurant because my husband was from Colombia, so I thought he would love it when I saw that it would cost us $1000 for two people. I thought it was expensive, but I told myself that it would be a great experience like the one we had a year before at a different, expensive restaurant, but it was worth every penny. To my disappointment, it was one of the worst financial mistakes I ever made in my entire life. 1. Location: The location does not look safe. We were walking on the street, holding our breath. It is not the safest area in D.C. 2. The restaurant. Nothing that will make your experience cost 1000 dollars. There were cheap-looking chairs and decorations. I guarantee you, you will not be wowed. Once we sat there, I thought they would move us somewhere else, but no, that was it. The place was very average. That is not a place you will go if you want a fancy dinner 3. Drinks. I got the nine-drink package. They served me drinks from the bottom of the bottle, and the sparkling wine was not even a champagne or a nice sparkling wine for 1000 dollars. Come on 4. Food: I traveled around the world, including Colombia. This was the worst food experience I ever had. I don't know where these reviews came from. The food could have been better. I bet you with 20 meals that they will serve you, and you will still walk out of there hungry When people pay this high for dinner, they get confused and think, maybe it is me who is not sophisticated enough, or maybe I do not have rich taste. I was sooo confused about this place. My husband is from Colombia and lived in Bogota for many years, and he thought it was a joke and asked me not to tell anyone about this. He did not want me to write a review, but I said that people must know. I have a business as well. Sometimes, business owners pay to remove bad reviews, and they ask their friends and family to write good reviews. I do not want people to have the same regret. The owner is either a sociopath or a genius. He figured that people would pay for something expensive because they think that for that price, it has to be GOOD. It was more the psychological experience that we had. I will never go there again, even for free. We talked to another Colombian couple, and they thought the same thing. I told myself I knew I was not crazy. The joke is at the end; we were so tired of that crappy food they insisted on packing the rest so we could take it home; they brought a cheap-looking brown bag. I told them that for a 1000 dollars dinner, this is what you have?
I've been to several Michelin-rated restaurants in the past
I've been to several Michelin-rated restaurants in the past few years, and this is still one of my favorites. It can be difficult to find fine dining restaurants that balance presentation, creativity, and memorably flavorful food, but El Cielo did all three. Myself, my partner, and a friend got the shortened tasting menu, and we felt it was plenty of food without being overfull - especially because there was plenty of time between courses. Our servers were friendly and enthusiastic about explaining each dish. The meal we had truly felt like an exploration and celebration of both food and culture, and I would be happy to visit again.
This was quite the birthday experience! Food was amazing
This was quite the birthday experience! Food was amazing (20 courses) and whimsically presented. I did the wine pairing and my husband the cocktails. We shared and thoroughly enjoyed both. Wine pairings were fabulous and the cocktail presentation just so much fun. The vibe was great except we both had a hard time hearing our waiter over the music. Don't get me wrong I LOVED the music, it was just a bit loud. Sommelier was super helpful and informative. It was evident everyone who worked there truly enjoyed what they were doing. My only real complaint is this. What exactly is the 20% service charge? What does it cover? Who does it go to? I have zero issue paying for an amazing meal and experience but what precisely am I paying for? I know this is something DC is trying out (Initiative 82) but even after reading up on it, it is unclear whether or not this goes towards the tip. We did tip regardless since we wanted to make sure the wait staff was compensated for their efforts. Would have give 5 stars had this service fee either been omitted or better explained. Overall we loved the experience!
Underwhelming Food
We came on a Friday night for the 20-course El Cielo experience after seeing El Cielo's superb reputation for their restaurants in Columbia. Especially for the price point, the experience was disappointing and underwhelming. The dinner took almost 3.5 hours, and likely would have taken longer if we had not requested a speed-up in service. There was no reason for the pace - some courses had a ridiculously long wait time in between. Kitchen was not prepared for timing. Highly recommend just going for the smaller course menu if you do want to try El Cielo. Many of the desserts and snacks were not worth the extra time/cost. 2 of the courses on both menus are not food - just be aware. The one shining star was the front of house staff and the lead server for our table - Alexandra. She was remarkable and it was fun learning about the culture and history of the dishes. Each snack course was essentially a bite, with the mains being small dishes and desserts being a combo. Some of the courses were delicious and delightful, others were very disappointing. The tapioca and foie - there was no taste of foie and the tapioca was dry. The quail was way too salty - kitchen basics! Most of the desserts tasted similar - overly sweet/syrupy and little character. We didn't finish 3 of the dessert courses because they were so disappointing. They did bring out a thoughtful edible chocolate candle to celebrate the occasion - that was probably the best dessert. Lastly, not sure why the restaurant is prepay/nonrefundable. The restaurant wasn't full the entire night we dined.
Stylish Columbian Cuisine in Casually Elegant Atmosphere
I wasn't sure what to expect, but did not leave disappointed. Granted, not every dish was to my flavor palate, but I enjoyed the tour of Columbia and certainly appreciated the quality of the cooking and the presentation. Similarly, the wine pairings were thoughtful and brought out the flavors of the food. Although I was more than a little envious of those who ordered the beverage pairing which included cocktails. I'm not sure how the drinks tasted, but they were beautifully presented. I also liked the casually elegant atmosphere. Fellow diners were incredibly diverse - in all ways - and dress went from nice shorts to dresses and platform heels. A nice evening out for a special occasion or just because.

Need to cancel a bid, not getting a response… how do I do it? |
Click on "Take off the Market Option" in your portfolio
Working on your bid? |
Your bid has been “matched” with a reservation. From the time a reservation has been located, the seller of the reservation must connect with moderator to give transfer information for reservation. If the seller;however, does NOT respond to reservation transfer, then your bid is reprocessed and returns to the first step, which is connecting your request to a reservation.
Process after bid is accepted. |
Hey @EvocativeFold67, welcome to appointmenttrader! Once the reservation is in your portfolio, you definitely own the timeslot, the review team would not have approved the trade if the reservation wasn't confirmed - so you are going :-) Judging from your post you bid today and are going tomorrow - don't worry as long as you initiated the name transfer, you are good - the transfer service has to work with the opening hours of the reservation team of the respective venue. You will likely see the transfer confirmation a couple hours before your reservation time.
Where do the Reservations on AppointmentTrader come from? |
Mostly from people who don't need their reservations or appointments any longer. AT has no relationship with places listed and acts as a platform connecting buyers and sellers making sure that listed reservations are real and that privacy is not compromised when transacting.
What happens if my bid expires unanswered? |
Hey @FluffyStar64, thanks for the question! When you place your bid the amount gets transferred in a deposit account, the second you either cancel your bid or a few minutes after the bid expires the funds are moved back into your main account from where you can refund it to your payment method or use for other transactions.

Just looking for a little reassurance. Thanks!
