El Che Steakhouse & Bar Chicago Reviews from The Last Year
Excellent food and ambience.
If you any steak you can't go wrong here. Plus lots of great sides and dessert as well. Celebrated a birthday with the party steak platter. Totally worth it!
The food was excellent.
One of the best steaks I have ever had. The bone marrow was well worth it. Our server was great and was able to recommend could appetizers and drink pairings. The whiskey list was short, but they selected great spirit options. Honestly, the only recommendation I would have for the restaurant is that they should invest in a barrel pick! I absolutely plan to go back!
Great Vibe, nice drinks, beautifully plated food.
Nice service in a smaller dark location perfect for a date night.
I came here to celebrate my boyfriend's birthday last night.
To start positively, I thought the restaurant was really beautiful and had a nice ambiance. Our server was also very kind and attentive. The reason I am giving three stars is for a couple reasons: 1. My $61 filet was ordered medium but came out extremely rare. I did politely send it back and it was slightly better, but still not even close to medium.. 2. The food was good but I was not blown away. I feel like the food tasted similar to something I could make at home (minus the empanadas and the scallops, those were the best of the night). For the price, I was expecting to be blown away but was very meh. 3. It was my boyfriend's birthday and the restaurant did not do anything to celebrate (no free dessert or drink or anything). I'm not trying to sound entitled but most nice restaurants usually do like one little nice thing when celebrating a milestone. 4. My $17 wine was the smallest pour I've ever seen Anyways, this place was decent and not at all a bad experience but not worth the price (to me). Maybe it would be more worth it to split the party steak or seafood platter with a small group. $350 total (tip included) for 2 people
Is this my favorite steakhouse in the city? Yes it is.
Simple but effective everything is cooked with a passion and the flavor is out of this world. The best empanadas I've ever had and the Italian beef filling is actually better than any beef I've had in the city. The whole fish was perfect, so succulent and topped with a chimichurri I nearly ate the entire fish myself. Only caveat is the fish is not de-boned so buyer beware. The steak frites are absolutely immaculate. A 10oz center cut ribeye with beef fat fries what's more to want? We nearly licked the plate clean. Even after dinner we still saved room for dessert glad we did because it was truly special. The service was great and the vibes are just right. A great place just to come have a cocktail sit at the bar, order a steak get dessert; that's sounds like a pretty perfect night to me. They also make a killer caipirnha.
Okay so I visited this restaurant based on a recommendation.
I'll start with the vibe, very earthy, dark but sexy if I can describe a restaurant like that. Love seeing the fire that prepared the entrees. The hostess to the bartenders (Ashley and Nicole) were one of the highlights of the evening. I had a bottle of Bramare Malbec. I enjoyed the quality of the wine a little pricey but me and my guest enjoyed it. So now for the highlight or disappointment. I had the 16oz New York strip, cooked medium. The steak had ZERO flavor. It was under seasoned and was like chewing rubber. The chimichurri sauce tasted like oil with some green leaves of which I had no idea. No red pepper flakes, vinegar or fresh oregano. I had a salad with barbecue crunch up chips. The presentation was interesting but for the price never again would I order that salad. For my appetizer I had oysters with bread crumbs and green scallions. My order had four oysters with so much bread crumbs, that I tasted was bread crumbs and scallions. My bartender recommended the head on shrimp which was the food highlight of the meal! Unfortunately I only had one. The sauce for shrimp was spectacular! A creamy garlicky, red pepper flake buttery goodness. My guest had a lobster tail that was so small it was cut in half to appear worthy of the price! I won't review this because I didn't personally taste it. EXCELLENT service food quality needs some help!
Shellfish Butter Was The Star
Very good meal overall. As a group, we split the Mar de Plata seafood tray which was elevated by the shellfish butter. It was unlike anything I’d ever had, although at $210, I still thought it overpriced. Had the NY Strip which was an excellent cut, but was a bit undercooked. Overall it was a positive experience but in terms of Chicago steakhouses, it’s not on par with the better establishments.
Visiting Chicago for a conference and to see family.
We had heard about El Che from a piece on CBS Saturday Morning last fall. It was a wonderful meal at El Che this week on a Sunday evening. The restaurant was full and lively. The sommelier recommended a wonderful Argentinian Red Wine that is uniquely aged in cement pods. We started with the bone marrow appetizer which was heavenly. Our main meals were the Hangar steak frites, the Dry Aged Strip Steak, and the 7 oz Filet. All had amazing flavor and were cooked perfectly. Our side was the charred eggplant which was also flavorful and amazing. The beef fat fries are outstanding - perfectly thin and crispy! For dessert we had the Mezcal Old Fashioned and the Gelato (Chocolate and Dulce de Leche) - the perfect way to end this meal (I've run out of superlatives to describe how awesome this meal was). I hope I can visit Chicago and El Che again someday. Or the Chef could open another El Che restaurant in my town (hint hint).
The seafood platter is a must! Everything my husband and I
The seafood platter is a must! Everything my husband and I ate and drank was delicious. But the seafood platter was a definite star. The grill brings out the flavor of the seafood and everything was cooked to perfection. Nothing was over cooked which can easily happen with seafood but that wasn't the case at El Che. We started off the truffle empanada and the dipping sauce brought out the flavor even more. We had asparagus and sweet potatoes to go with the seafood platter and those were just as tasty as everything else on our table. Their version of the Paloma was delish too as we were a bit unsure bc of the pink peppercorn, but it worked. Not overly peppery. I don't know how found room for dessert but I did. The molten lava cake was solid, but nothing spectacular. I replaced the coconut gelato with Dulce de leche gelato, which I liked better than the cake itself. We're already talking about when we're going to go back to El Che. Highly recommend!!

I had an amazing meal and just an overall great experience
I had an amazing meal and just an overall great experience here. We were about 15 minutes early for our reservation and were seated right away even though we were prepared to wait or get a seat at the bar if allowed. The server was friendly & welcoming. The place was basically at capacity- filled with chatter & music playing softly in the background. Very nice atmosphere. I got the ribeye & it was delicious! Cooked perfectly. I did ask for steak sauce (sue me) & they provided a homemade one in a gravy boat that was amazing but also kind of mild so it didn't overpower the steak. For sides I tried the potatoes, polenta, & sweet potatoes. They were all so different and tasty. Every item we ordered was so delicious- it's so rare that everything you pick knocks your socks off.
Went here for date night and was thoroughly impressed.
We had reservations (which I highly recommend) at 8:15pm. We got there early and sat at the bar and had drinks before being seated. We were seated at the kitchen table which wasn't too bad. It can get a little warm due to the grills, but overall I enjoyed dining there. The hostess even lit candles to set a romantic vibe (lol). We indulged in appetizers and main courses. The food was delicious. Everything was cooked perfectly and seasoned to perfection. We enjoyed scallops, an empanada, bone marrow, and a steak dinner. Everything was so filling that there wasn't any room for dessert. The appetizers we shared and each got our own entree. We had leftovers because each dish was just that filling. Highly recommend this steakhouse if you're a steak or seafood lover. Everything was great from the meals to the customer service. I have to say that our waiter was very attentive and knowledgeable about the menu. Even the chefs checked in with us to see how we were enjoying our meals :)

We dined at El Che for my partners birthday and thank goodness we had a reservations because it was packed. The night started off a little wonky, we were seated almost immediately however it took forever for a server to help us. Our water glasses were filled twice and we had to ask to get a server since nobody was taking our order. Anycase after asking for service we had a great waiter who was very informative and made some great suggestions! We ordered some cocktails to start off with- a Manhattan & caipirinha. Both drinks were cute and tasty. For apps we ordered the grilled oysters & truffle empanada- with the oysters they add bacon & the (bacon) taste was very overwhelming still tasty tho. The Truffle empanada stole the show! We were super impressed by the flavors, it was Creamy and just enough of the Truffle flavor. We were super indecisive about our mains but our waiter made a great suggestion to get half of the shellfish parrillada and add steak to it- it was great! They do a little 'show' when they bring the parrillada which we enjoyed. Everything about this meal was spot on- the super tasty seafood, tender steak w fries topped with a Creamy garlic buttery sauce was everything! Would 100% recommend! We were too stuffed to even order dessert but since it was my partners bday they brought out a sundae which we enjoyed. We had a wonderful time at El Che and will be back! *our bill came to about $330 (including tip) **parking is a bit hard in this area, we had to circle around a couple of times and then got lucky
This was my birthday dinner, we were racking our brains
This was my birthday dinner, we were racking our brains trying to figure out where to go. The mar de plata was what sold us. It was delicious, fresh and mouth watering. The lobster butter was the icing on the cake. We literally had everything we had dropping in the lobster butter. With 4 pieces of everything (shrimp, half lobster tails, scallops and grilled oysters) it was filling. My partner isn't a fan of raw oysters but absolutely loved these grilled oysters. The service at El che is above par. From the hostess to our server to the table helpers/bus boys. So kind, helpful and extremely attentive. Seating isn't spacious, you're really close to whomever you're near and it gets really loud but, expected for a downtown restaurant that I'm sure gets several reservations. I would absolutely come back again, it was well worth it.
El Che's service moves like a well oiled machine.
The staff is extremely attentive; I observed how quickly they move and I appreciate it. For my birthday weekend, I had a 5 o'clock reservation- I'm not sure if you HAVE to have a res but I'd recommend it. My server was wonderful, had great suggestions. My app was the Italian beef empanada..I would go back just for that and the sauce choices that came with it were elite. Main, I had 8oz filet with a side of broccolini.... as tasty as the filet was, the broccolini was thee star of the show, for me. I can't describe the flavor profile but it was a damn good time. They tried to force macaroons on me since it was my bday, which was so gracious, but since I'm not the biggest fan of macaroons, I gifted it to my lyft driver. This is a higher priced menu so be ready to drop some money. Great for a date night, after a meeting or double date. Seating is great but the place does fill up quickly so again, recommend to make a reservation. There's a parking garage right across but it doesn't seem big, street parking is also avail but you'll likely need spot hero.
Dined here for a friend birthday.
Service was amazing. Food was ok. I had the roasted oysters that was over powered with seasoned onion chips. But with a side of the roasted potatoes that were fantastic. Tried a piece of steak and it was delicious. I also had 2 drinks one was water down with juice and the other was amazing. I would have gave 5 stars but upon leaving signing the check the sever came over to the table to grab the check and was handed a cash tip. He then waved it off saying that's ok me assuming that wasn't enough for him. The other guest at the table had told him we we're also tipping on the card. He said okay and walked away. After that he had a attitude until we left. Great restaurant but that sever needs a conversation held!
Great ambiance, exceptional service and outstanding food.
The prawns were hands down my favorite - expertly cooked and soooo flavorful, the steak was absolutely delicious too!
I was excited to try this place after seeing the chef on
I was excited to try this place after seeing the chef on tv, & I thought his fish preparation looked enticing. My husband loves steak so he had also mentioned a few times. Sadly, our experience here was a pretty bad one. We went last summer & sat outside. Service took a while. My husband actually ordered the premium $45 margarita (because he refuses to wear reading glasses). When I told him as the waiter left, he followed the waiter to change his order right away before it was entered. So then, how did someone still bring him the drink?? As for food we started with the endive salad which was ok. A bit too smothered in dressing. My husband had the filet with dada sauce & didn't care too much for the sauce. My salmon, however, was terrible. It was pretty much inedible. I honestly wondered if they messed with it as they were upset about the drink. The chef actually came & stood outside for a bit leaning against the wall...I was wondering why he felt the need to watch me try to eat this tainted fish. I ended up filling up on the carrots instead since I couldn't eat this. In the end, not just bad food, but bad wine, bad service, & what appeared to be unethical standards.

One of the best experiences, from service, atmosphere and food. If you are in chicago or traveling ti chicago, this is a must visit!
Ambience 10/10.
Service was 10/10. Food was 8.5 out of ten. I also needed to order and try more things other than salad, octopus and splitting a steak. If I'm in the neighborhood I will be back. I would recommend El Che to my friends and family.
Where do I begin.
.. Well, to be fair clearly they are doing something right because they've been open for a long time. I think it's awesome that they take food allergies so seriously. When you walk in the place is lively. A nice ambiance. Our waiter was very nice. The menu is interesting. I didn't understand the layout. Are all the appetizers at the top half? But then you have some in the middle...is it a new take on tapas...I'm still not sure. I guess I should have done more research before coming. The menu is also small and the focus is steak. I wish there were more options. I think that's the mistake I made. I ordered the scallops when I should have ordered a Steak. The scallops lacked flavor. They sat on a pile of something puréed with a mound of diced apple in the middle with onion decoration on the side and some type of hard chip. The textures were all over the place but there was just no flavor. They needed to add something to cut the sweetness of the apples or balance it out. The wedge Salad was not a normal wedge. Never have I had it with romaine served with a MOUND of crunchy...whatever that was. They left butterfly shrimp with the heads on. So strange. I love shrimp with the heads on....but this was just...different and flavorless. The drinks we ordered weren't made correctly, so we sent them back. The Wine menu is so big that it actually says "Table of Contents", so I'm guessing that's what I should have ordered. I think the worst part was the busboys. I mean they kept coming, asking if we were done. No matter what we said they would come again. I think they wanted us to hurry because they wanted the table, but MAN was it annoying. I didn't finish my food and finally, I said " just take it". The fries were made perfectly but they were too salty. I was over it. This place just wasn't for me. I ended up back at Bavettes for my dinner part two. All 4 dishes were over $100 without a tip. I didn't snap a photo of the shrimp. It was not worth it.
Solid steak house option
Enjoyed this for our annual steakhouse dinner. Service was good, was seated promptly and the food was delicious. Had the Endive Salad which was very good and perfect to split. All steak options were very flavorful and cooked to perfection. Papas bravas were so good but carrots were prepared nicely but maybe a bit undercooked. Duck fat fries were forgettable. Desserts were phenomenal, got the sundae and molten lava cake. Really glad we tried this place but probably a one and done. Open flame fire in the kitchen at back of restaurant was cool.

Great Service - amazing dinner!!
Read about the site in NYT and bought a reservation at Mother Wolf in LA 2 days later. Worked great and the food was amazing!!!
Worked perfectly!
Got the reservation (that I couldn't get anywhere else) and was able to entertain a group of friends at the infamous Bern's Steakhouse.
Got into Nobu Malibu
Wonderful! My parents are visiting and we have wanted to go to Nobu Malibu for years. I tried getting a reservation myself but it was next to impossible. So glad I was able to buy a reservation on appointment trader for a decent price!
Very easy
Was very hesitant going into this experience but am glad to say that it worked out very well ! will definitely use appointment trader in the future
Fabulous Lunch
I was veeeeeerry skeptical that this would work, particularly at a restaurant as hard to get into as Nobu Malibu, and it was perfect! We had lunch outside on the patio and it was fabulous!
Great reviewer team
Just wanted to take a second to shout out the reviewer team. Even though they probably review hundreds of listings and bids a day, they still take the time to leave great comments and respond relatively quickly. Thanks!
Incredible
I got a reservation to Don Angie, which I've been trying to book for weeks! I am very happy with this service.
Best platform out there!
Super simple, easy, and fast to secure reservations for hard-to-get restaurants and locations!
This app is life changing
This app has opened my world up to so many wonderful new experiences I would never have the chance to have without access to this awesome app! 10/10!
Worked perfectly
Was a little nervous at first but was pleased to see that the booking went through flawlessly.
Highly recommended.
Success on Short Notice
Was able to snag an indoor table at Don Angie through an absolutely seamless worry-free process.

Quick table in Miami
I didn’t have my hopes high as it was a party of 4. In 24 hours I had a carbone reservation available! I was very happy as my family really wanted to come here
Prime time, great meal
So easy and had a prime time which I can never seem to get on normal res apps. So worth it
Got impossible NYC res
instead of waiting weeks I got my 4 charles reservation instantly
Worked perfectly to get into Carbone. So delighted
perfect
Worked well, got me into a restaurant with no availability
I was skeptical, and I still don't really know how they managed to find this hard-to-find reservation, but it was a win-win from my point of view, and I'll use this service again.
Last minute reservation for Delilah Las Vegas
Got a last minute reservation, dinner for 2 at Delilah Las Vegas: super impressed! The process was simple, transaction seamless. We had an amazing time! Couldn’t be happier! 😍
It works!
Ok at this point I've attended a reservation purchased on AT by a friend and sold a reservation personally. Both worked pretty smoothly, nothing sketchy about it. A few areas for improvement including a way to more directly communicate between buyers and sellers, but the app always seems to be in development. AT customer support is really(!) responsive and helpful too if you have questions!
Money transfer
As a seller, I like the fact i have the ability now to transfer money out of my AT account and into a bank account. Makes getting the money much easier then the process before.
Love this app
Got to go to places otherwise unreachable
Easy Access
Very easy to get into one of the hardest restaurants to reserve in New York.
Whose name will my reservation be under when I arrive at the venue?
It can be under your name or a name you choose! Some reservation offers already include the AppointmentTrader Transfer Service which will transfer the reservation in to your name. If its not included you can add it on after buying the reservation for a small fee. One thing on that though: As many reservations become available at last minute, taking a reservation in someone else name is quick and great for privacy. Most reservations on AT are listed with a virtual phone number, so all you need to do is present the phone number at the hostess stand and you are good to go!
Payouts Blocked Because of Sell Through Rate
Does anyone know how AT plans to handle cases where a seller is quitting the platform but has a sell through rate <25%? The error message I got said to fill more bids or find other ways to increase the rate.
Is AT really going to block sellers from withdrawing their money? Especially revenue made before the sell through rate was introduced??
Tune into NBC News - Top Story Tonight 7:40p ET
Let’s go. Get more people placing bids!
I will give you 50% of ALL of my PROFITS if you teach me how to make profits?
LOL. Thank you The New Yorker.
Appointment
Transferring reservations is not supported in AT. Why not just use the name in the AT screenshot?
Buyers interested in Bern's Steakhouse: PLEASE READ
Same goes for 4 Charles and I Sodi
Prepaid Reservation Fee
Agreed. Ultimately not addressing this month after month is clearly resulting in a drop in certain venue’s rankings & sales.
Congrats on 3 mil
🍾🍾🍾🍾🍾🍾🧨🧨🧨 now on to 30 mill!
Need to cancel a bid, not getting a response… how do I do it?
Click on "Take off the Market Option" in your portfolio
Working on your bid?
Your bid has been “matched” with a reservation. From the time a reservation has been located, the seller of the reservation must connect with moderator to give transfer information for reservation. If the seller;however, does NOT respond to reservation transfer, then your bid is reprocessed and returns to the first step, which is connecting your request to a reservation.
Process after bid is accepted.
Hey @EvocativeFold67, welcome to appointmenttrader! Once the reservation is in your portfolio, you definitely own the timeslot, the review team would not have approved the trade if the reservation wasn't confirmed - so you are going :-) Judging from your post you bid today and are going tomorrow - don't worry as long as you initiated the name transfer, you are good - the transfer service has to work with the opening hours of the reservation team of the respective venue. You will likely see the transfer confirmation a couple hours before your reservation time.
Where do the Reservations on AppointmentTrader come from?
Mostly from people who don't need their reservations or appointments any longer. AT has no relationship with places listed and acts as a platform connecting buyers and sellers making sure that listed reservations are real and that privacy is not compromised when transacting.
What happens if my bid expires unanswered?
Hey @FluffyStar64, thanks for the question! When you place your bid the amount gets transferred in a deposit account, the second you either cancel your bid or a few minutes after the bid expires the funds are moved back into your main account from where you can refund it to your payment method or use for other transactions.
