Dooky Chase Restaurant New Orleans Reviews from The Last Year
We had reservations for an early lunch.
When we got there there were five tables in the restaurant with a large table in the back. Told the hostess our name and she was having issues with her iPad. We waited till she could get it working. I probably would have gone ahead and sat the table and then figured out the iPad later. We sat at the table probably for ten minutes before I heard a server ask the hostess if another server knew she had been sat. When our server finally came over I ordered a sweet tea and was told they didn't carry it because Leah Chase didn't like it. I just thought it was weird. We ordered the gumbo and then red beans and rice with fried chicken. The gumbo tasted like any gumbo on Bourbon Street would taste like that is serving someone from the Midwest that had never had it. The fried chicken made me weep for Willie Mae's and the void that it has created for good chicken in New Orleans. The service woes continued all through lunch. Was glad to have finally gotten to eat at a New Orleans culinary landmark, but these can't be the standards that have kept them open for so long.
Good was delicious, service also excellent.
Lovely dining experience! Dooky's is a N'awlins cultural and historical landmark, well worth the trip.
Great , historic restaurant, don’t forget to book !
This is a famous New Orleans restaurant.. Famed for its Gumbo & fried chicken .. a superb place to visit when in town for authentic “ soul food “ . We tried all the favourite dishes .. and loved them . The service / wait times are a little extended , but as tourists , on holiday , we had no time pressures and it made a change from feeling rushed , which a lot of restaurants do these days . This is a historic , chilled out experience
Dinner experience from Hell
The food was good but the service was literally probably the worse service I have ever experienced, not exaggerating! I literally could have gotten better service at Denny’s. First, I made a reservation online but the system did not register it( which they said can happen), so my husband and I had to wait for over an hour. Then they brought us bread but it was so little we asked for more and it was never given because the kitchen wasn’t making anymore. They forgot to bring us one of our appetizers and we literally asked for it twice and they finally brought it well after we ate our first appetizer. Then my husband ordered the Ribeye steak, brought out the steak but completely forgot his side baked potato. I asked to speak to the manger and we waited for like 15 mins after we paid and she never came, so we left. Very disappointing for such an iconic restaurant and reading other bad reviews, I realized they don’t care. The service along with great food at other restaurants like Morrow’s and Brennans is far superior!

You must try the fried chicken!
I can't believe I had never heard of this place as many times as I have been to NOLA. My favorite restaurant, Upperline, closed after the pandemic so I was open to new options. I had the fried chicken and it was outstanding. Loved the gumbo and the peach cobbler. Not a huge fan of the shrimp Creole or the crab soup. Would love to return and try more things if I am back but the chicken, cobbler and gumbo were worth the trip for sure. Service was friendly and pleasant.
I finally got into the restaurant and overall I would say
I finally got into the restaurant and overall I would say it's good but not as good as it's hyped up to be. The ambiance is beautiful. Some dishes were better than others. The fried chicken was , no doubt about it- a must try. The gumbo was good, but it was one of those dishes you eat and think mine is better. The Mac and cheese, try that too. The red beans and rice was mediocre which had me a bit disappointed. It needed more depth of flavor and spice, again something I make better at home. The worst disappointment was the shrimp creole. I was shocked and very sad at how FLAVORLESS it was . I've been making shrimp Creole since I was in middle school and I was really expecting to be wowed but I wasn't at all. Lastly, my husband and daughter ordered the pecan pie which was very delicious, but my daughter's slice had no pecans on top!!! Now why the servers would even put that on the table is beyond me. So it really depends on what you order; and if you know your Creole food and cook, just don't get your expectations sky high.
Well, it is Dooky Chase.
..what more can I say about the new orleans staple. Beautiful art and photos of famous patrons are on display while you wait to be seated at the busy institution. The dining room is classy l, but with a family feel. The bathrooms are clean and beautiful (I hate dirty bathrooms) The food! Hubby had the GF fried chicken with rice and beans. He loved it. I had the regular fried chicken (give me that gluten! Lol) with string beans. I really liked both items. Also, try the rum punch. It is a winner. Getting a reservation can be tricky, so book early.
The food was top tier delicious.
Everything we had was on point, cooked perfectly, seasoned perfectly (okay the chicken was just a tad bit salty but still very good), and satisfying. We all left very happy. It'd an upscale place with down home family touch. There is beautiful artwork all over and the staff were friendly.
Service, food and ambiance were amazing! Appreciate all the
Service, food and ambiance were amazing! Appreciate all the servers working together to refill drinking glasses and bread. Gumbo was perfect! Should have chosen the bowl instead of the cup. Crawfish etouffe was pretty good. My fiancée enjoyed his chicken creole; mother in law enjoyed the crab cake and friend green tomato; and my bonus daughter enjoyed her fried chicken and fries. We tried the bread pudding and peach cobbler for dessert and both were amazing, however I preferred the peach cobbler. Definitely a place to return whenever I come back to New Orleans.
Amazing history. It poor service.
We soooo looked forward to this restaurant with the years and years of history. It pains me to say that our server who said he worked there for 8 years wore an Apple ear bud listening to music while serving. He was not the only one listening to music while serving there were at least 2 other servers. So while servers walked around you on occasion could catch a little of the music they were listening….. SAD The meals all tasted fine but getting refills were almost impossible to get. This was not limited to just our table, everyone was receiving very slow service. For our party of 2 for lunch. it took just a little over 2 hours to eat and pay. It was long and drawn out. No one was rude but were told they are short staffed. We will for sure come and and give them another try.
The history and atmosphere was second to none.
The attention to detail of the art lined walls was beautiful. We came for Tuesday lunch. All of our meals were served hot, fresh and flavorful. The stewed chicken was the best. The service speed was not slow, it was VERY slow. Especially for lunch. Getting refills was hard, we were told they are short staffed. Our server had an ear bud listening to music while serving. We found this to be tacky but we tipped well. Our meals tasted great but it really took a long time. Too long.

The fried chicken was delicious, service was good and atmosphere was nice. We made a reservation as they opened so it was not crowded. Flavor was just a little bit lacking for me, but that's just my own opinion, it's definitely worth a try and visit.

Yes, yes and yes!!!! You MUST add this historic, black owned restaurant to your list. The food is so good and reminds me of home. The Chase family does an awesome job at making you feel at home and the service is always great. Perfect for dining and special events. Dooky Chase's Restaurant opened its doors for business in 1941. What was initially a sandwich shop and lottery ticket outlet in 1939 blossomed into a thriving bar and later a respected family restaurant in Treme. Founded by Emily and Dooky Chase, Sr., Dooky Chase's Restaurant soon became the meeting place for music and entertainment, civil rights, and culture in New Orleans. Lunch: Tuesday - Friday 11am - 3pm Dinner: Fridays and Saturdays Only 5:30pm - 9:00pm
It was an honor to eat at Dookey Chase's
I had been planning to come to Dookey Chase's for nearly four years. To finally sit in a place that has done, and does so much for equality in society was truly humbling. The food and atmosphere are incredible. If it wasn't so far away from home I'd go back in a heartbeat.
Best brunch ever !
My daughter and I were in NOLA this May and she chose D C for a special breakfast . Very , very happy she did . This place is a classic . Lots of pictures of Obama enjoying himself here . The food was over the top good . I had chicken and shrimp & grits . Fabulous . Excellent service . Beautiful room . Reasonable prices.
Unwelcome
I went to Dooky Chase restaurant after being told it was the best soul food restaurant in New Orleans. The hostess did not want to seat me and after she did I was ignored and stared at by the staff. The girl who was supposed to be my waitress walked by my table four times without any acknowledgment that I was even there. Eventually one of the busboys took my order which came out in fits and starts. I received two small pieces of fried chicken and drumstick and a wing. When I went to use the washroom and returned to my table it had been cleared and the bill left as much as to say GET OUT!!!. The gist was you are a white woman in our restaurant and our neighborhood and are not wanted here. I never felt so unwelcome in my life.
Worth the visit
Excellent traditional Nola fare. Good service given the volume. Yummy gumbo. Peach cobbler was a bit disappointing. Good drinks. Good people watching, too.
True Story..Fantastic Food & Service
During my many trips to New Orleans..I hadn’t made it to Dooky Chase’s, but I am glad it finally happened! Note: you must make reservations!!! Let me say it again…Reservations are mandatory! Although this is the rule, the ‘Foodie’ Gods smiled upon me & my friend! We were defeated upon arrival and was going to get take out, but we asked if there was seating in the bar area! We were told ‘No’, but the bar manager was very training new staff and stated we could sit at the bar with the understanding that this was a training exercise! Done and Done…in fact..any mistakes made…please send them our way…we don’t mind! Haaahaaa We ordered cocktails, appetizers and entrees! ALL DELICIOUS! We didn’t mind helping out the trainees! Our chicken creole…red beans and rice w/fried chicken was AMAZING! I am not a big dessert person…but Baybee…that PEACH COBBLER WAS A MOMENT I’LL NEVER FORGET…Whoa! The staff were caring and super friendly! The history of this establishment is reason enough to visit and learn about how this restaurant provided food to African American Entertainers that passed through New Orleans who couldn’t be served at other places! This history is honored through serving the menu items that made Dooky Chase’s famous! The art work throughout the dining room and bathroom is also breath taking! If you are lucky enough to snag a reservation..enjoy your meal and consider yourself fortunate to be in such a historic restaurant that has Amazing Food & Service!
Disappointing
We were excited to try this iconic Treme neighborhood restaurant . Lots of photographs of famous people in foyer, including President Obama. The menu looked delicious. We were seated within 15 minutes of our reservation time. The service was just bad. Slow, indifferent. Drinks ordered, delivered 20 minutes laters, ice melted. Food service was the same. My food was lukewarm and pretty tasteless. No bread. No one to ask. Check took forever. Maybe our server was new, or having an off night but I'm not going back. Decor was nice. Interesting paintings.
I finally got a chance to swing by and try this staple.
What holds me back is the hours as they are mostly visitor/tourist hours and not working hour friendly. We made reservations but came a little early and were accommodated. One thing I would say is service is a little slow. We sat at the bar while waiting and the bartender served another couple before us which set the mood a little off but they made up for it. The waitress also moved a little slow so have a little patience when visiting. The food was really good and honestly what we came for anyway. Everything was fresh and made with love. I'd I get a chance to visit again I surely would.
Chicken was good and juicy but the wait times were terrible
Chicken was good and juicy but the wait times were terrible and I found lipstick on my glass
Great Evening
The food and service were both incredible. The dining area was beautiful and all employees were friendly and professional. Anybody going to New Orleans need to make it a point to eat at Dooky Chase.

Excellent service and food wish I had taken photos of the delicious meal my family enjoyed. First time visiting will be back!
Ms Leah is smiling down at her beautiful legacy.
Amazing service from genuinely great people who love what they do. Food so delicious you'll be dreaming about it for the rest of your life.

I would give the place 5 stars if it wasn't for the bartender with an attitude and I did not receive the complimentary bread. The place was nice, food and service was excellent. We had the gumbo, fried chicken meal with Mac & Chicken Creole which included jambalaya and shrimp. The bread pudding is one of the best I've had in NOLA and felt light. The rum punch was way too sweet but nice drink if you like sweet drinks.
Our waiter was fantastic, went in for lunch on a Tuesday
Our waiter was fantastic, went in for lunch on a Tuesday and the food was also really good, I had high expectations and the matched them!!!
Friendly and historic
Fabulous fried chicken in a friendly atmosphere of locals and tourists. This felt like a part of real New Orleans culture.
Visiting Dooky Chase's Restaurant has been on my bucket
Visiting Dooky Chase's Restaurant has been on my bucket list since I was 13 years old and watched the Princess and the Frog for the first time. I'm 27, finally made it to NOLA, and made it my mission to dine here. My experience was nothing short of what I'd imagine. It was absolutely brilliant. I made reservations for my husband and I two weeks in advance, which I'd recommend. We visited for brunch on a Sunday and I don't think we'd had gotten a seat if we didn't have reserved tabled. Not without a lengthy wait. The entrance and waiting area showcases the restaurant's rich history, the walls adorned with news paper articles, awards, and photos of celebrities and politicians dining with the owners. Even if you have to wait for your seat, you'll find it's easy to be distracted with all the portraits and readings available. We were greeted by our very friendly server who brought us crispy, buttery, golden garlic bread. I ordered the famous Red Beans and Rice ($14.95) that came with 2 pieces of fried chicken and paired that with the recommend wine, the La Crema Pinot Nior. The pairing was excellent, and my main dish was heavenly, the blend of spices a magical delight. There was just the right amount of sausage and rice. The fried chicken was fantastic! Beautifully crunchy and full of flavor - I could have easily eaten twice the amount I was served. My husband ordered the Shrimp Clemeneau (shrimp sautéed with garlic sauce, peas, mushrooms, and brabant potatoes, $18.95). If you like butter and garlic, this is the dish for you. While we both found it a little overwhelming, especially towards the bottom of the dish which is drowned in the sauce, everything above was delicious. Wonderful flavor and a very unique blend of seasoning. There potatoes were roasted perfectly and the shrimp was delightful. Of course, we couldn't leave without trying some sides and dessert, especially since we'd travelled from so far. We tried a cup of Creole Gumbo ($7.95) that we both LOVED. By far, the best gumbo we ate during our entire stay in NOLA. The Stewed Okra and Jambalaya ($4.95) were equally as delicious. We ordered both dessert options, Praline Bread Pudding and Peach Cobbler. I honestly couldn't pick which I favored as both were out of this world! I highly recommend ordering both! A couple tidbits/recommendations: Please make reservations, especially if you're visiting on a Sunday. Also, the restaurant is not in the French Quarter, or anywhere touristy. We chose to take an Uber from our hotel. You can also take the bus if you have the time and/or understand the bus routes. There is a dress code which can be found on the restaurants website. It's also plastered on the host station. I will 100% be returning to Dooky Chase's if I'm ever in the city again.

Came here while visiting New Orleans with some friends and had to try this spot after hearing many great things about it... and it did not disappoint! Got a lunch reservation at 2pm on a Saturday -- highly recommend getting a reservation as it gets very very busy. We arrived early but were told that we would get seated right at our reservation time. Service was great, however, we did have to wait over 45 minutes for our food to arrive, which is probably the longest I've ever waited. Luckily the food was absolutely worth it! Got the signature fried chicken which came with three pieces of their creole seasoned chicken and a side of mac and cheese. Accompanying the chicken was a very small side of pickled kale salad which complimented the richness of the fried chicken and mac and cheese. Everything was absolutely delicious... the fried chicken was outstanding! Perfectly seasoned, juicy and crunchy. I also got the Madisonville Mary (aka their version of a Bloody Mary) which was fairly spicy and quite delicious! Definitely made waiting for my food a bit easier. Delightful experience, despite the long wait time. Highly recommend a try if you're in New Orleans!
My wife and I recently dined here.
We both enjoyed our meal. I had the red beans and rice which came with two pieces of fried chicken. The chicken was excellent. My wife, a New Orleans native, said the bread pudding was the best she's ever had.
Absolutely amazing food and history.
This exemplifies home cooking. PLEASE make sure you have the gumbo and fried catfish. You will NOT be disappointed!!!
Excellent food, great vibe.
This restaurant is about great creole food and civil rights history. The current owners made the rounds to all the tables in our dinning room the day we were there. They are restoring the room on the second floor that was used for civil rights action planning by leaders including Martin Luther King, Ralph Abernathy, John Lewis and many others. They are planning to have the room ready for public viewing by Juneteenth 2024. I had the seafood platter and it was delicious. When our waitress saw me taking a picture of my wife by a manikin in full Zulu Mardi Gras dress, she offered to take a pic of my wife and I together! I appreciated that and took her up on her offer to be our photographer. I was too full for dessert!
My favorite NOLA restaurant.
Beautiful dining room, gorgeous art, amazing food and service. Six days of restaurants, and this was my favorite. Will return.
A fine experience
The formal dining room is elegantly set, the white linens contrasting with colorful paintings lining the walls and two elaborate Mardi Gras costumes in the middle. We had the famous fried chicken and the seafood platter, both done just right; even the stewed okra was good. A wine suggestion was listed with each dish, so we had splits of Prosecco, an excellent choice. Service was very professional and friendly.
Legendary Restaurant Serving Well Established Classics
We arrived for our lunch at 11:25 AM for an 11:30 reservation. We were seated after waiting in line for other to be seated ahead of us. We were seated in a French revival interior room in mustard yellow with white trim and multiple colorful paintings. The chairs were comfortable and also mustard yellow with the tables covered in white tablecloths. The glasses and flatware are standard restaurant supply items. The wine menu is small but reasonably priced. The lunch menu has a selection of soups and salads, sandwiches and main courses. I had the Creole gumbo and the red beans and rice which comes with red beans and rice and 2 pieces of fried chicken. You to get the choice of white, dark or mixed. My wife had the 3 pieces of fried chicken. Dooky Chase is known for their fried chicken and it is very good. The red beans and rice were very flavorful and was seasoned very well. It is the best version of red beans and rice I have had. My wife had mustard greens as a side. These were also delicious. The gumbo had a medium dark roux, chicken, shrimp and 2 types of sausage. I found it very tasty. Its price is a little expensive for the amount served when compared to other gumbos in New Orleans. The weight staff was attentive. We enjoyed hour meals. If you have not been you should go at least once.
Should have been better!
We were excited to eat at this restaurant steeped in tradition. Sadly, our meal was not what it should have been. Stuffed shrimp were good but served on a bed of cold fried potatoes. And the red beans and rice were served at basically room temperature! How do you not keep red beans piping hot. The server did ask if we wanted more but by then we were half way through the meal. But she could have offered a dessert for our poor experience which would have been a kind gesture that left us feeling like they cared. But no! I doubt they even read their reviews as the place is very busy. But there are WAY better restaurants in New Orleans and I would not recommend this place.
wonderful food in a lovely setting
this one had been recommended and we couldn't agree more. Terrific food. A surprise were all the paintings, artwork and photos, including one that showed Obama. This restaurant is a bit outside the main stream but totally worth going to. You must have reservations. Our service was impeccable
Poor reservation system
We tried for weeks to get a reservation. Almost every day the reservation calendar was unresponsive to getting a time, whether it was first of the day or last of the day. So we drove to the restaurant and asked for a table for two. We were asked if we had a res and said no because it was impossible to get a res using their online system. The hostess explained that it was not possible to get a res more than 7 days in advance and if the system was not responding to requests for a res, that meant they had none for the day. Very poor and confusing reservation system. While speaking with the hostess we noticed a half dozen tables for two were set up but not being used. We won’t bother coming back to Dooky Chase restaurant.

Great Service - amazing dinner!!
Read about the site in NYT and bought a reservation at Mother Wolf in LA 2 days later. Worked great and the food was amazing!!!
Worked perfectly!
Got the reservation (that I couldn't get anywhere else) and was able to entertain a group of friends at the infamous Bern's Steakhouse.
Got into Nobu Malibu
Wonderful! My parents are visiting and we have wanted to go to Nobu Malibu for years. I tried getting a reservation myself but it was next to impossible. So glad I was able to buy a reservation on appointment trader for a decent price!
Very easy
Was very hesitant going into this experience but am glad to say that it worked out very well ! will definitely use appointment trader in the future
Fabulous Lunch
I was veeeeeerry skeptical that this would work, particularly at a restaurant as hard to get into as Nobu Malibu, and it was perfect! We had lunch outside on the patio and it was fabulous!
Great reviewer team
Just wanted to take a second to shout out the reviewer team. Even though they probably review hundreds of listings and bids a day, they still take the time to leave great comments and respond relatively quickly. Thanks!
Incredible
I got a reservation to Don Angie, which I've been trying to book for weeks! I am very happy with this service.
Best platform out there!
Super simple, easy, and fast to secure reservations for hard-to-get restaurants and locations!
This app is life changing
This app has opened my world up to so many wonderful new experiences I would never have the chance to have without access to this awesome app! 10/10!
Worked perfectly
Was a little nervous at first but was pleased to see that the booking went through flawlessly.
Highly recommended.

Quick table in Miami
I didn’t have my hopes high as it was a party of 4. In 24 hours I had a carbone reservation available! I was very happy as my family really wanted to come here

Worked well, got me into a restaurant with no availability
I was skeptical, and I still don't really know how they managed to find this hard-to-find reservation, but it was a win-win from my point of view, and I'll use this service again.
Last minute reservation for Delilah Las Vegas
Got a last minute reservation, dinner for 2 at Delilah Las Vegas: super impressed! The process was simple, transaction seamless. We had an amazing time! Couldn’t be happier! 😍
It works!
Ok at this point I've attended a reservation purchased on AT by a friend and sold a reservation personally. Both worked pretty smoothly, nothing sketchy about it. A few areas for improvement including a way to more directly communicate between buyers and sellers, but the app always seems to be in development. AT customer support is really(!) responsive and helpful too if you have questions!
Money transfer
As a seller, I like the fact i have the ability now to transfer money out of my AT account and into a bank account. Makes getting the money much easier then the process before.
Love this app
Got to go to places otherwise unreachable
Easy Access
Very easy to get into one of the hardest restaurants to reserve in New York.
Whose name will my reservation be under when I arrive at the venue?
It can be under your name or a name you choose! Some reservation offers already include the AppointmentTrader Transfer Service which will transfer the reservation in to your name. If its not included you can add it on after buying the reservation for a small fee. One thing on that though: As many reservations become available at last minute, taking a reservation in someone else name is quick and great for privacy. Most reservations on AT are listed with a virtual phone number, so all you need to do is present the phone number at the hostess stand and you are good to go!
Payouts Blocked Because of Sell Through Rate
Does anyone know how AT plans to handle cases where a seller is quitting the platform but has a sell through rate <25%? The error message I got said to fill more bids or find other ways to increase the rate.
Is AT really going to block sellers from withdrawing their money? Especially revenue made before the sell through rate was introduced??

LOL. Thank you The New Yorker.

Transferring reservations is not supported in AT. Why not just use the name in the AT screenshot?
Buyers interested in Bern's Steakhouse: PLEASE READ
Same goes for 4 Charles and I Sodi
Prepaid Reservation Fee
Agreed. Ultimately not addressing this month after month is clearly resulting in a drop in certain venue’s rankings & sales.
Congrats on 3 mil

Need to cancel a bid, not getting a response… how do I do it?
Click on "Take off the Market Option" in your portfolio
Working on your bid?
Your bid has been “matched” with a reservation. From the time a reservation has been located, the seller of the reservation must connect with moderator to give transfer information for reservation. If the seller;however, does NOT respond to reservation transfer, then your bid is reprocessed and returns to the first step, which is connecting your request to a reservation.
Process after bid is accepted.
Hey @EvocativeFold67, welcome to appointmenttrader! Once the reservation is in your portfolio, you definitely own the timeslot, the review team would not have approved the trade if the reservation wasn't confirmed - so you are going :-) Judging from your post you bid today and are going tomorrow - don't worry as long as you initiated the name transfer, you are good - the transfer service has to work with the opening hours of the reservation team of the respective venue. You will likely see the transfer confirmation a couple hours before your reservation time.
Where do the Reservations on AppointmentTrader come from?
Mostly from people who don't need their reservations or appointments any longer. AT has no relationship with places listed and acts as a platform connecting buyers and sellers making sure that listed reservations are real and that privacy is not compromised when transacting.
What happens if my bid expires unanswered?
Hey @FluffyStar64, thanks for the question! When you place your bid the amount gets transferred in a deposit account, the second you either cancel your bid or a few minutes after the bid expires the funds are moved back into your main account from where you can refund it to your payment method or use for other transactions.
