Yum! We were looking forward to different flavors while visiting London. We were able to get a late lunch reservation, so it was very quiet. Service started out great and everyone was attentive. After we finished our first glass of wine, we had to wave to get the attention of another server because our original server was now gone? Service after that was mediocre. The food was good, although I am not sure we would go back due to the price and service. You get to choose between the Adventurer, Guide and Maverick, however, we had a very difficult time understanding what they were saying. In the beginning we asked them to repeat the description of the course, and then gave up. Restaurant is inside the beautiful Mandarin Oriental.

Trying his triple cooked chips alone was worth the price of admission. Having said that, the food was not the best I have ever had. The ambience was great. The service was good but once we were finished, they forgot about us and I had to finally wave at someone to bro g us the bill. Overall, I would probably try other Michelin star restaurants rather than returning. But if you've never been, you should try it.
Be the first to ReplyThis is a good restaurant.
However, it is entirely incongruous with its promise. It has two Michelin stars and is priced accordingly. It has pomp and pride you'd really only find elsewhere at the French Laundry. The food is OK. There is absolutely no way that this food would get a single star in the US, France, or Italy. But it's good food. I will go further--for all I know, this may very well be the best food in the UK, but that's not a terribly high bar.

Unanimously, our favorite meal this trip was lunch at Dinner by Heston Blumenthal. The menu reads like a brief history of English food, with dishes dating back to the 14th century. For that signature H.B. whimsy, we were given cards, not unlike those you'd find in a tarot deck, that dictate how much engagement we'd like from the waitstaff. After this first flirtation, I'm jonesin' for more Heston Blumenthal in my life. The dishes I ordered came from the vegetarian menu; it had a version of Rice & Flesh (c. 1390) I could stomach, substituting artichoke (one of my favorite veggies) for the sweetbread & smoked eel in the original recipe. For starters, I had The Truffle (c. 1500), a mushroom parfait coated in truffles which spread like butter on a delicious piece of grilled toast. Like the Meat Fruit dish they're known for (chicken liver spread shaped into a mandarin), The Truffle is meant to look like something it isn't. We split three desserts: Tipsy Cake (c. 1858) which takes over an hour to prepare so order this pineapple & brioche dish upfront; Sambocade (c. 1390), a goat's milk cheesecake; & the one I now constantly yearn for, Chocolate Bar (c. 1730), which is filled with a decadent passionfruit jam & topped with gold flakes. Exquisite, every single one of 'em. It's easy to see how & why Dinner by Heston Blumenthal maintains their coveted two Michelin stars. Our waiter & those assisting him were all so lovely. The restaurant gives you a view of the kitchen on one side & a gorgeous English garden on the other. And, of course H.B.'s imagination & creativity is unparalleled. I'm planning my next London trip around when I can get a reservation to his other restaurants, & that's no hyperbole.

Overall a fine meal, food was pretty good-good, nothing really outstanding or over the top. The a la carte menu is nice, as are the stories about the dishes. The space is pretty dramatic with high ceilings and an "open" kitchen behind glass. Service is hit or miss, it can be slow and water cups weren't regularly filled. But once our food started coming the meal was pretty well paced. The cocktails and wine were decent. The experience is not on par with 2 star restaurants, but neither is the price (feels cheap!). This is closer to a 1 star michelin but I assume holds 2 because of the name and location. Not a bad meal, just not somewhere I'm itching to go back to. must try restaurant imo! The meat fruit and tipsy cake are both classics and must orders. Enough has been said about them so I'm not gonna pile on but let's just say I had really high expectations and they didn't disappoint In our ongoing quest to eat at every Michelin restaurant we can possibly afford, we had dinner at..... Dinner. We ordered the tasting menu, as one must, and I will admit to being a little fearful of what we'd be eating, since the menu is a riff on ancient English recipes. Be the first to ReplyLocated in the opulent Mandarin hotel, this restaurant
Located in the opulent Mandarin hotel, this restaurant provided me with a memorable dining experience while visiting in London. Though the dishes are elegant and modern, they are rooted and inspired by historic British cuisines so be prepared for that. We elected for the tasting menu as opposed to the a la carte, and felt full by the end. When you were seated, you are given three large cards by the host, which allow you to A.) Sit in silence and enjoy the dishes, B.) Dive into the preparations and details of what you're eating, or C.) Learn the history behind the dish. You can obviously change the card throughout the dinning experience, but we found C to be the most fun in discovering the history behind each of these dishes that were brought back from the past with modern re-invention. In addition to the food, they have a great list of wines available, as well as three wine pairing options to choose from (Classic, Premium, Prestige). We chose the Premium and Classic, which had a nice variety of bubbles/wine to pair with the meals. Highly recommend you give this place a try at least once the next time you're in London!

We went for lunch service over the holidays and had a decent experience. The restaurant was empty when we entered and filled up about 70% by the time we left around two. We sat at a nice table facing Hyde Park.We ordered a la carte to try more variety of dishes between the two of us. The signature dishes were good (meat fruit and tipsy cake at the end). Tipsy cake is literally a bed of butter so probably a heart attack! The confit chicken and scallops were both good as starters. The ribeye was your typical ribeye with fries, nothing special at all. Expected more out of a Heston slab of steak. The squab was good but smaller pieces on the bone rather than cuts of just meat.Lastly, the service was just ok for a two Michelin star restaurant. Plenty of servers, but most were standing around trying (and failing) to look busy. The floor supervisors were busy. Would we come back? Yes. Would this be our first choice to eat? No.

In our ongoing quest to eat at every Michelin restaurant we can possibly afford, we had dinner at..... Dinner. We ordered the tasting menu, as one must, and I will admit to being a little fearful of what we'd be eating, since the menu is a riff on ancient English recipes. We all know England isn't known for its cuisine, now or at any point in history. The descriptions made me very nervous. Thankfully my fears were completely unfounded. Every course was an absolute delight. In particular, the pineapple dessert, was insanely delicious. We also ordered the wine pairing package, which was full of thoughtful and unique pairings. Unfortunately, the wine pairing is where they are losing a star from me. These had to have been the stingiest pours I've ever had from a Michelin-level wine pairing. The wines being served were not extremely expensive wines, so we felt like this pairing package was not worth the expense, which is probably the first time we have *ever* felt that way about a wine pairing at a Michelin dine. And that's saying something.Other than that, the interior was jaw-dropping gorgeous. They have a card system where you can indicate the level of interaction you want to have with the staff surrounding your dishes and wines, which I thought was a very nice touch. All in all, I do highly recommend this restaurant, but skip the skimpy wine pairing and just buy your own bottle--or-two-- and get what you actually pay for.

Be the first to ReplyI hate to give such a low rating to such a lovely
I hate to give such a low rating to such a lovely restaurant and staff but if we were just basing this on the food, three stars would be generous. Let's start with the positives. I liked the restaurant and atmosphere. Located in the Mandarin Oriental hotel, it was classy but not at all stuffy. The staff were friendly and attentive without being overbearing or pretentious. The wine selection was great. The chicken liver parfait was good and the fries were excellent, the fries or 'chips' I should say, were some of the best I've ever had (even better than the duck fat fries at Stripsteak in Mandalay Bay). The plating was also beautiful and the pace was good. Now the bad: The beef was borderline terrible. It was chewy to the point of being sinewy. The sauce was delicious but this was a ribeye cut, with little to no fat. Even grass fed ribeye cuts I've had contain more fat and were far more tender than these slices. To the kitchen's credit, the beef was cooked to a perfect medium-rare. However, of course, the perfect medium-rare cooking only accentuated the terrible quality of the meat. Since the ribeye was our main course, this was a letdown. The remaining dishes were not particularly memorable. There was a quail dish with smoked consommé, the consommé had a sweetness and tanginess that tasted disjointed from the quail. Their famous tipsy cake was mostly good but really sweet, couldn't take more than a few bites. Decades ago, by some featured restaurant article that now eludes my memory, The Fat Duck was not only ranked the best restaurant in England but the world. I've wanted to try it ever since I first read about it. When I heard the same chef had opened this restaurant in London, which was way more convenient for a tourist such as myself to visit, I had to try it. If my bill were cut into half or a third, it wouldn't sway my opinions about how much I didn't enjoy the dishes. At 1/2 or 1/3 the price, it would merely incite bewilderment, I'd think, "how could they afford so much staff and time plating such delicious looking dishes at 1/2 or 1/3 what we paid in such a venue?" Conclusion? Maybe too much spent on ancillary benefits and not enough on the food.
Be the first to Reply10/10 recommend.
This was our first time at a 2 star Michelin and it did not disappoint. Every bite was full of carefully crafted flavors. The experience was just magnifiqué. They boast meals from 13th century England and beyond with a twist. I had the duck and it melted in my mouth. It was so good I had to pause a moment and just savor it before swallowing. The atmosphere is a subtle nod to that old English time period and you can choose how you want your meal explained (if at all). If you ever have the chance you MUST visit.
Be the first to ReplyI didn't expect that there would be cheating on consumers
I didn't expect that there would be cheating on consumers in the Michelin two-star restaurant. The sommelier recommended a bottle of 2012 Italian red wine that was not on the wine list. When we asked the price, he replied that it was 650 pounds. All six of us at the table clearly heard that it was six fifty, but when we checked out, he said it was 6500 pounds

Great food, very creative.Almost every dish had a twist. The bread was amazing.Wine pairing (premium) wss superbAnd the service was friendly and professional
Be the first to ReplyLocated in Mandarin Continental, DHB is a top notch dining
Located in Mandarin Continental, DHB is a top notch dining experience. Inspired by traditional British dishes and truly reinvented, light, upscale and tasteful. Service was warm and professional. The salamagundi chicken confit was savory with crispy skin, fillet de beef perfectly prepared, the crisps apparently takes 24 hours to prepare and mushroom ketchup predates tomato ketchup, rainbow trout with green sauce was light and paired well with the chenin blanc. Dessert tipsy cake should be ordered early, and if your waiter is a wizard, would have predicted that you would order it and held one for you, ice cream is made with liquid nitrogen at the table side. Cap off with sambuca.

Great service and historical ambiance with descriptive wine and food menus. The wine menu that provides details on the origins of the wine selection from every region and the food menu dates back to the 1700s. Great spot for a royal British dining experience.

Went for lunch in February; my last trip abroad before COVID lockdowns. Absolutely fantastic. I hadn't planned to go, but after a bad experience at Ledbury the night before, I needed an amazing meal before heading home. This place nailed it.Meat fruit - phenomenal. Service - phenomenal. Wines - phenomenal. Stunning location within the Mandarin Oriental. Will definitely be back for dinner.

Went for a birthday and had a great time! Thought rice and flesh was a little too salty after a while. But that's my only issue. Tipsy cake, meat fruit and chips are a must to order.
Be the first to ReplyStill our favourite restaurant in London! Dinner by Heston
Still our favourite restaurant in London! Dinner by Heston takes historic recipes dating back hundreds of years and moderizies them to today's fine dining standards. The restaurant's two Michelin stars are very well deserved, as the food is creative and truly delicious. Appreciate not only the unique point of view, but also the approach, which is not overtly serious or staid. In a city where tradition and formality can still dominate fine dining, Dinner by Heston is a breath of fresh air. The wine list is serviceable, but could use some editing and additional depth in certain areas. Service has always been hospitable and friendly, certainly professional and attentive but also human. Enjoy the atmosphere, which is luxe, yet open and airy. Worth a visit!Atmosphere- Modern luxe that eschews fussy formality - there are no white table cloths. Open space with updated design and open views unto the kitchen.- Pleasant amount of activity, has a pulse without being boisterous.- Soaring ceilings and large windows with nice views unto Hyde Park.FoodThe menu concept is quite unique here, with each dish taking its cue from historic recipes. Though each, of course, is a fully modern dish without fuss or gimmickry. Execution is very strong, and dishes are presented with polish. In particular, we found the proteins on this visit to be perfectly prepared. We enjoyed:- Plum Meat Fruit (spiced red wine, chicken liver parfait - £23.50): Amazing creativity in presentation, the fruit gel surrounding the parfait always compliments well. An unctuous, satisfying dish.- Earl Grey Tea Cured Salmon (pickled lemon salad, gentleman's relish & sorrel - £22.00): This visit the dish seemed a bit different, with less prominent tea flavour. Nice, but may try something different next time.- Venison & Pickled Cherries (braised red cabbage gel, grilled red cabbage & pickled cherries - £48.00): A difficult protein to master, and here it's done exceptionally well. The meat was surprisingly moist and tender. A bold, flavourful choice for the colder months. Excellent!- Duck & Turnip (buttered black turnip, turnip cream, truffle & civet of duck - £46.00): Duck was also cooked perfectly; moist, with well rendered fat. Would have no hesitation to order again.- Tipsy Cake (spit roast pineapple - £18.50): A house specialty and MUST ORDER. A touch sweet from the warm custard at the bottom, but nicely offset by the roasted pineapple. A favourite!- Brown Bread Ice Cream (salted butter caramel, pear & malted yeast syrup - £17.50): Gooey sticky carmel dominates this dish, though it's not particularly sweet. This dessert is good, but not incredible.BeverageWe began with a glass of the 2012 Moet & Chandon Grand Vintage Brut (£18), a great choice for by the glass consumption and quite reasonably priced. Unfortunately, the full wine list is not presented online. While the list has broad coverage across regions, it could use more depth in certain regions (including in price, producer). That being said, it's not hard to find something agreeable. With our meal, the 2013 Domaine du Vieux Telegraphe 'La Crau' CdP (£139) paired quite nicely though it would have been nice to get a stronger vintage. To conclude, the tea selection is not to be missed. Personally, I quite enjoy the Silver Needle Tea (£9).Service-Affable and very attentive.-More personality than some other high end London venues, felt welcomed and warm.

Incredible, incredible experienceAs expected, my first encounter with a Heston restaurant didn't disappoint. I'm a fan of Ashley Palmer Watts too, having seen him on Masterchef Oz a number of times, so I was very excited to secure a table last minute.Drinks:I wasn't drinking as I had to play squash when I got home, so I tried both of their non alcoholic grape juices - first the merlot and then the Sauvignon blanc. The merlot was my favourite of the two, although they tasted fairly similar - sweet and delicious. Certainly an adequate replacement for the alcoholic versions, albeit not as satisfying! The wine menu was extensive (as was the 'cellar', which is a couple of glass boxes near the entrance) and there were a few decent beers I noticed too, so I'd have no hesitation in saying this is a good drinks spot.Food:Bread courseA crusty bread made with British rye. Nutty and savoury, with deliciously creamy salted butter. It was nice. Not the best bread course I've ever had.Meat fruitAbsolutely lives up to the hype! The surprise is real, even though you know what's coming. Tonnes of umami flavour, it's the silkiest and smoothest parfait you'll ever have. The savoury is expertly offset by a little sweetness in the jelly, which also adds an interesting texture. The sourdough is perfectly grilled and a stonking compliment to the main event.Hereford ribeye with bone marrow, triple cooked chips, mushroom ketchup and extra beef stockSteak - absolutely perfect medium rare (as you'd hope for at £48!) but still. The crust that you hope for on a top notch steak was present and correct - someone in the kitchen knows how to cook beef! As I always find at ultra high end resatauranrs, there's a certain je ne sais quoi - I think it might be the stockAnd the stock!! Thank the good lord above that they brought an extra helping out - I absolutely smothered everything in it. Ridiculously good. Umami in abundance. And the mushroom ketchup was superb too - rich and full of flavour, and with the little bit of historical knowledge I gained about the origins of ketchup (catsup) I got an education to boot. Triple cooked chips were a little underwhelming though I'm afraid. As these are a Heston creation, I had high expectations - maybe I'd bigged them up in my head too much. Not to say they weren't good, but ultimately they were crispy chips. On reflection I wish I'd have gone for something a bit more adventurous than the steak, as delicious as it was, as there were far more interesting sounding things on the menu and I don't normally go for a steak, unless it's a speciality. Oh well, an excuse to come back I guess...I decided against pud as First Direct had already left me 3 missed calls. And I was stuffed tbh.Atmosphere - not as stuffy as you'd perhaps expect. Quiet. Attentive but not intrusive. Food came out at a good pace - not too quick. Staff were all super friendly and willing to discuss the story behind each dish, which of course there always is with Heston!I had a beautiful view of Hyde Park too which helped. It's not cheap (in other breaking news, a man landed on the moon...) but it's a culinary experience the likes of which you'll not likely encounter anywhere else (apart from Heston's other places obvs). Well worth a visit and a splurge!

Featuring modern takes on historic dishes, some dating back to the 14th century, I'll admit I was a little intimidated by the menu. Frog leg porridge? Chicken liver parfait? Suffice it to say I had nothing to worry about! The food, atmosphere and service were all top notch. Thanks for the wonderful evening and hope to make it back next time we visit London. Oh, and for someone who thought they hated the taste of chicken liver, the parfait was amazing!
Be the first to ReplyExuding ambiance and class, Dinner by HB is a refined meal
Exuding ambiance and class, Dinner by HB is a refined meal that delivers not only on high-end feel, but delicious food with exceptional service. As others have mentioned, Dinner is located inside a luxurious hotel that actually feels as high-end as it looks. Every member of the staff from the moment you enter the hotel as you walk to the restaurant is polite, courteous and helpful. In such a short period of time, I had so many people greet or serve me while I was dining alone... but what made this special was how kind and attentive they were. They did not have to give such service to a single dinner, but they did - they made small talk when I wanted and let me be when I was enjoying my meal. I felt well taken care of - inside a gorgeous venue. Eating during lunch time, the windows were wide open on a sunny London day, I had a great view of a park with copious amounts of light illuminating the fancy fixtures and tasty treats. Food was fantastic. First dish was smoky with a nice almond crunch, the greens were rather fresh and brightened up the dish. The sweet breads were perfectly textured, crispy and rich. Crunchiness of the entire plate was a good compliment to the sauces tangy profile. Looking absolutely gorgeous, the mandarin pate was perfect, rich, savory, well plated and unique overall. It's thin, sweet skin on the pate was fun to peel back and great to eat. Fish plate was cooked perfectly, temperature was spot on while the texture easy and light. While I don't remember what the "green" sauce was, I do recall it being overpowering but not harming to the dish. Pigeon was very tender with the sauce that accompanied robust in flavor. While the seasoning was perfect and the plating classic, the skin wasn't as crispy as I hoped but that's a personal preference. Overall, Dinner is your classic high end experience, in a great setting with even better food. Highly recommended.
Be the first to ReplyService, I will note at the start, was as exceptional and
Service, I will note at the start, was as exceptional and other-level-good as service gets. I don't have too much to say about the food because every iota of it was technically perfect; it all tasted very good to great and looked the part as well. I don't think we will eat a more perfect meal with more exceptional service in the rest of 2019. I will never say no to such a meal and I will never not enjoy it; however, perfect though it is, this is also not the stuff that thrills me anymore. We had everything on that day's lunch menu and it went something like this: the dressed snails (grilled lettuce, parsley, anchovy, garlic) were rich, lovely; the hay smoked salmon (smoked beetroot, pickled lemon salad, parsley, sorrel) was sweeter than I expected and not as smoky as I expected, but it was uniformly excellent; the roast cod and admiral sauce (roast parsnip, buttermilk, shallots, shrimp, brown butter, capers) was a fulfilling and flawless cook; the lamb & cucumber (roast belly of lamb, pickled cucumber heart, onions, rock samphire) was sous-vide tender, fantastically rich, and somehow exciting; the quaking pudding (spiced pears, pickled apple, almond biscuit, perry caramel) did indeed quake and shake and it was flush with mulled spices; and finally, the bohemian cake (chocolate and yuzu mousse with honey ice cream) might have had more yuzu than I prefer, but it was still altogether amazing. Would I recommend the wine pairings? Not necessarily, but I always get them and rarely regret it and I did not regret it here.
