Dhamaka New York Reviews from The Last Year
Dhamaka is sublime.
The service, atmosphere and food is world class. As a lifelong NYer I've enjoyed countless Indian meals, this place is a cut above. In full disclosure, the prices are commensurate with the quality.
Delicious and exciting menu.
Most notable dishes we enjoyed were the crab dish with ghee basmati rice.
Party of 6 or more will HAVE to do pre-fix menu.
That's just crazy to me that if you have a big group you need to eat from a certain menu and you can't just choose. I'm sorry if I was going in to spend my money I would at least like to select what I would want to eat. Also pre-fix menu is very selective. You also need to decide what to eat a week before the reservation. Do better dhamaka! They can only be contacted via email no phone number
Overhyped and expensive with Average food , mediocre
Overhyped and expensive with Average food , mediocre ambiance and so-so service . When you say it's "unapologetically Indian" why does it translate to buckets of oil and spoonfuls of chilli powder . The champaran mutton was my least favorite. I had really high expectations from it but it was such a Let down. Chicken Rezala was bland . The appetizers were also average. The only saving grace would be the lassi which was also missing the laddu . The quality of the food doesn't justify the price .
The restaurant had the worst hostess that we have ever come
The restaurant had the worst hostess that we have ever come across in our life, Alejandra- and we were a party of six people who were not seated for one hour becuase we were 5 minutes late due to NYC traffice- we were out of towners and we thought this restaurants was so talked about. She was rude to each and everyone in our group and told us that she was not going to seat us. Never ever have we seen anything like this in any restaurant in USA for the last over 40 years. Very disappointing and we are already reaching out to the owner and BBB. Such employees do not need to be there, they ruined our time and no employee could help us like it was all pre meditated. Security guard was aware of the whole situation. Zero stars from us from the Washington DC area
Horrible and Terrible experience.
in spite of reservations, Alejandra did not seat us after we arrived for an hour. we kept waiting and standing, she humiliated me and my friends. she did not give us table or services, was so rude and discriminated us.. she refused to seat us, she asked us to leave. action needs to be taken against her and the manager. Will never go there and will ask anyone to go there.
Came here for a group dinner with friends.
We ordered a lot of dishes and shared most of it. I love Indian food, always have.. But even more so since I got together with my partner who is from Kerala. This is to say that I have a lot of experience with great Indian food. Over all, I'm a big fan of what the team behind Dhamaka has created here. Unapologetic, bold Indian flavors. Everything was fantastic! For the food alone I would rate them 5 stars. However, for the price point, you expect more from the dining experience. Better service, a more sophisticated atmosphere.. better place settings, etc. If we had the exact same food and experience but with pre-pandemic Manhattan prices I would have given them 5 stars. But for a fairly pricey meal, I expect more.
I'm so glad I checked out Dhamaka! One of the best Indian
I'm so glad I checked out Dhamaka! One of the best Indian meals I've had. It was fairly easy to snag a reservation; I hear it used to be a lot harder. I made it on the day reservations opened for the day I had in mind (2-3 weeks out) and there was plenty of availability. Come the day of the reservation, and the restaurant was hopping even on a Monday evening at 7:30. I arrived first and waited for the rest of my group to arrive before getting seated. The food menu is one page and is divided up into different sections like snacks, grill, pots, etc. which made it easy to order. There's a good variety of both veg and non-veg dishes. If it's your first time here, I would recommend coming with a larger group so you can try more items. There were 5 of us, so we ordered a number of dishes to share: Gurda kapoora ($23) - my friend recommended this dish, so we all gave it a try. Honestly couldn't tell it was made with goat kidney and testicles since everything was chopped up and cooked into a curry. We all thought it was very tasty. If only it came with a couple more pieces of pao for dipping, that'd be perfect! Afghani chicken ($31) - good flavors but the breast meat portions were a bit dry Achaari lamb ribs ($22) - I thought I wouldn't like this that much since I don't like Indian pickle (achaar), but the lamb ribs were so tender that I didn't mind the pickle flavoring as much Paneer nawabi korma ($36) - curry made with housemade paneer. This was a bit spicy but OMG the paneer was the softest paneer I've ever had, softer than even the fresh paneer I've tried in India. Nalli biryani ($75) - biryani made with slow braised lamb shank. This was my favorite dish of the night! The lamb was super tender and the rice flavorful without being too spicy. I expected it to be very spicy but somehow it wasn't that bad, which is shocking because I have extremely low tolerance. I also really enjoyed watching them cut open the bread layer sealing the pot closed. We also ordered some extra chapati and rice on the sides to eat with the curries. Please note that 20% gratuity is charged for parties of 5 or larger.
"Chill" ambience and great service.
Had the Lasooni Palak, Paneer Nawabi Korma, and Dahi Wali Bhindi. Food was pretty good, especially the paneer. However, I thought it was overpriced. Great dining experience but probably won't return again.
Bad
Bharta for nashta ?? vegetarian menu for starters is just not upto mark..the items on the menu are not for the Indian palate.. their starters consisted of lasooni Palak and baigan bharta for starters.. really.. are these starters ? We went for dinner.. service was good but the menu is startling.. we by force ordered baigan bharta, dal panchmel and paneer tika with parantha.. they served the Bharta and parantha but the dal arrived half hour later as it was main course. Something really wrong with the menu and the way courses are served
Visited for the second time, wasn't super impressed with
Visited for the second time, wasn't super impressed with the food. The paneer tikka was probably the highlight but was just a tad over-spiced, the chapli kebab was meh, and bophali murgh rezala wasn't super flavorful. The whole meal was too ghee-heavy. Not my favorite style of Indian food and probably wouldn't come back!
Good food great service.
It's one our favorite place to eat our traditional Indian food.
Flavors are great.
Baigan barta is very authentic. Saag was very flavorful. Great selection of Indian whiskeys too. Why 3 stars? The value is totally off. Order $60 per person, and you'll still need to get a slice of pizza later. Here's a good way to quantify it. Order the Saag and you'll have less food in your bowl than any salsa served as snack at Mexican restaurant.
A trendy spot for regional, Indian eats -- I love the chef
A trendy spot for regional, Indian eats -- I love the chef and concept a ton, and have been wanting to go since I first saw a little documentary on Youtube. The vibes here are really fun and it's tucked into the heart of the LES, inside of a larger market. The decor is fun and the waiters are attentive, though the food does take a while to come out. The food definitely skews more meat-heavy, so I wish there were a few more non-paneer vegetarian things. That being said... the Paneer Tikka was easily some of the best paneer I've had. The drinks were fairly good -- I liked the Lassi but the Nimbu Pani was a bit too spicy for my taste. Overall, a fun concept and I'd come back or try out some of the other restaurants under the Unapologetic Foods banner!
Patha is a big oily, not as dry and crispy as I expected.
The ribs is a bit fatty too. The chicken pot is delicious. The cod dish is ok. Cocktail of smoky bourbon has very strong smoky flavor. The menu is a bit pricey. I will go back to give other dishes a try again.
The menu has completely changed since the last time I was
The menu has completely changed since the last time I was here. I got the aam sutra which was a very unique cocktail combining mezcal, cinnamon syrup and different chutneys. It was like drinking a well seasoned Indian inspired meal on a hot summer day. Given how delicious the cocktail was and how available the bar was for walk in, I think this is the way to go for all future dine ins here. For the meals, we shared the bangan barta, which was a really good shredded eggplant dish that paired well with rice or chapati. The fish fry sounded appetizing but I wish I had looked at the reviews prior. The fish itself (even with the batter) was lacking in flavor. For an app and the portion size, I can't believe we paid 21 dollars for it. The achaari lamb ribs were inedible. It was over 50 percent fat which we couldn't eat. The star of the show was the Paneer Nawobi Korma. It was one of the best Indian curries I've had in a long time. I think for a better experience, skip the snacks and grill and go for the curry or main dishes and/or a cocktail or two. Overall, I have to drop to 3 bc of the lamb ribs. I wish we had known it was going to be all fat. But the curry and the cocktail were 5/5! The service at the bar was great too so I'll be coming back but dining smarter next time!
Great food, ambience, and service.
Loved the decorations on the wall. The appetizers were small.
I've been meaning to try this place for such a long time
I've been meaning to try this place for such a long time now. Absolutely loved every single dish. Tried every single vegetarian dish on the menu and would highly recommend them all. They're all VERY different from anything I've had before. Paan drink- very unique, tastes like paan in a liquid form. Would definitely recommend ending with a few of their desserts. Phenomenal service. Cute little restaurant inside of the market.
Super disappointed with the food! I had heard so much about
Super disappointed with the food! I had heard so much about this restaurant and really wanted to try. The only good dish that was amazing was their paneer, tasted so fresh and extremely soft. Apart from that it was all so sad. For appetizers we had paneer and fish fry. Paneer at dhamaka is easily the best paneer I have had in America. The fish fry was bad, it was bland and nothing special about it. For the main we got methi paneer and chicken kalimirch, both of them were so underwhelming. And the paratha we could order with it was the worst. It was flaky, greasy and so bad. I am now sure if the biryanis are better but this wasn't good, it was $170 for the meal.
Expensive, but totally worth it.
I was a bit worried that this place was totally over-hyped based on the other reviews, but I think this is one of the rare instances where the vegetarian food totally outshines the meat. The gucchi ki subz biryani (paneer, vegetable, and mushroom biryani) was absolutely incredible! This dish has it all: tons of different spices, lots of hearty vegetables, some savoriness from the morel mushrooms, creaminess from paneer, and plenty of heat. It's $47, but it's also big enough to feed three, which brings it into reasonable price territory for a group. I ended up taking quite a bit of it home and it was still delicious the next day. This might be my favorite biryani in New York, so I'd definitely recommend giving it a try.
The most overhyped restaurant.
The food is okay, but nothing worth noting. The chaat didn't have much flavor and had no texture. The fish fry and gosht champ were okay. Overall it was just underwhelming. We also made reservations two weeks in advance for indoor dining, and yet, when we arrived we were seated in their heated outdoor patio. It was so cold though that we needed to eat with our winter coats on. Just do yourself a favor and pass on this restaurant.
Good food, but very spicy and oily
The food is good but very oily and spicy. The restaurant is super busy. Service is good, but it felt as if they were hurrying us to finish and leave. For, non Indians - the taste is authentic but be prepared for very spicy and heavy food.
Flavour In Every Dish: No Disappointments
This place has a very creative menu. We sampled the pakoras, fish fry, & shrimp/crab biryani. All were extremely flavourful and well balanced. The paratha was possibly the best that I had ever tasted. The server provided solid recommendations for us and treated us well. The place is rather sparse (you are sort of eating in a food court). Reservations highly recommended (it is not a huge space).
Definitely forgettable
Food was way way too spicy - unnecessarily so. Drinks were very average. The only thing that was great is their paneer - just the quality of paneer was great - soft n fresh. I would compare food to a normal dhaba in India, and for that, it is ridiculously priced. I would give it a pass

Great Service - amazing dinner!!
Read about the site in NYT and bought a reservation at Mother Wolf in LA 2 days later. Worked great and the food was amazing!!!
Worked perfectly!
Got the reservation (that I couldn't get anywhere else) and was able to entertain a group of friends at the infamous Bern's Steakhouse.
Got into Nobu Malibu
Wonderful! My parents are visiting and we have wanted to go to Nobu Malibu for years. I tried getting a reservation myself but it was next to impossible. So glad I was able to buy a reservation on appointment trader for a decent price!
Very easy
Was very hesitant going into this experience but am glad to say that it worked out very well ! will definitely use appointment trader in the future
Fabulous Lunch
I was veeeeeerry skeptical that this would work, particularly at a restaurant as hard to get into as Nobu Malibu, and it was perfect! We had lunch outside on the patio and it was fabulous!
Great reviewer team
Just wanted to take a second to shout out the reviewer team. Even though they probably review hundreds of listings and bids a day, they still take the time to leave great comments and respond relatively quickly. Thanks!
Incredible
I got a reservation to Don Angie, which I've been trying to book for weeks! I am very happy with this service.
Best platform out there!
Super simple, easy, and fast to secure reservations for hard-to-get restaurants and locations!
This app is life changing
This app has opened my world up to so many wonderful new experiences I would never have the chance to have without access to this awesome app! 10/10!
Worked perfectly
Was a little nervous at first but was pleased to see that the booking went through flawlessly.
Highly recommended.
Success on Short Notice
Was able to snag an indoor table at Don Angie through an absolutely seamless worry-free process.
Worked perfectly, thank you!
This is a crazy holiday season in NYC and I was very pleasantly surprised to see that AppointmentTrader works! Will be using again!
Worked flawlessly!
Worked so well! I was a bit nervous, but everything went very smoothly. purchased the reservation, and got into the restaurant seamlessly.
Love this app!
So glad I came across this app :)
Quick table in Miami
I didn’t have my hopes high as it was a party of 4. In 24 hours I had a carbone reservation available! I was very happy as my family really wanted to come here
Prime time, great meal
So easy and had a prime time which I can never seem to get on normal res apps. So worth it
Got impossible NYC res
instead of waiting weeks I got my 4 charles reservation instantly
Worked perfectly to get into Carbone. So delighted
perfect
Worked well, got me into a restaurant with no availability
I was skeptical, and I still don't really know how they managed to find this hard-to-find reservation, but it was a win-win from my point of view, and I'll use this service again.
Last minute reservation for Delilah Las Vegas
Got a last minute reservation, dinner for 2 at Delilah Las Vegas: super impressed! The process was simple, transaction seamless. We had an amazing time! Couldn’t be happier! 😍
It works!
Ok at this point I've attended a reservation purchased on AT by a friend and sold a reservation personally. Both worked pretty smoothly, nothing sketchy about it. A few areas for improvement including a way to more directly communicate between buyers and sellers, but the app always seems to be in development. AT customer support is really(!) responsive and helpful too if you have questions!
Money transfer
As a seller, I like the fact i have the ability now to transfer money out of my AT account and into a bank account. Makes getting the money much easier then the process before.
Love this app
Got to go to places otherwise unreachable
Easy Access
Very easy to get into one of the hardest restaurants to reserve in New York.
Whose name will my reservation be under when I arrive at the venue?
It can be under your name or a name you choose! Some reservation offers already include the AppointmentTrader Transfer Service which will transfer the reservation in to your name. If its not included you can add it on after buying the reservation for a small fee. One thing on that though: As many reservations become available at last minute, taking a reservation in someone else name is quick and great for privacy. Most reservations on AT are listed with a virtual phone number, so all you need to do is present the phone number at the hostess stand and you are good to go!
Payouts Blocked Because of Sell Through Rate
Does anyone know how AT plans to handle cases where a seller is quitting the platform but has a sell through rate <25%? The error message I got said to fill more bids or find other ways to increase the rate.
Is AT really going to block sellers from withdrawing their money? Especially revenue made before the sell through rate was introduced??

I will give you 50% of ALL of my PROFITS if you teach me how to make profits?
LOL. Thank you The New Yorker.
Appointment
Transferring reservations is not supported in AT. Why not just use the name in the AT screenshot?
Buyers interested in Bern's Steakhouse: PLEASE READ
Same goes for 4 Charles and I Sodi
Prepaid Reservation Fee
Agreed. Ultimately not addressing this month after month is clearly resulting in a drop in certain venue’s rankings & sales.
Congrats on 3 mil
🍾🍾🍾🍾🍾🍾🧨🧨🧨 now on to 30 mill!
Need to cancel a bid, not getting a response… how do I do it?
Click on "Take off the Market Option" in your portfolio
Working on your bid?
Your bid has been “matched” with a reservation. From the time a reservation has been located, the seller of the reservation must connect with moderator to give transfer information for reservation. If the seller;however, does NOT respond to reservation transfer, then your bid is reprocessed and returns to the first step, which is connecting your request to a reservation.
Process after bid is accepted.
Hey @EvocativeFold67, welcome to appointmenttrader! Once the reservation is in your portfolio, you definitely own the timeslot, the review team would not have approved the trade if the reservation wasn't confirmed - so you are going :-) Judging from your post you bid today and are going tomorrow - don't worry as long as you initiated the name transfer, you are good - the transfer service has to work with the opening hours of the reservation team of the respective venue. You will likely see the transfer confirmation a couple hours before your reservation time.
Where do the Reservations on AppointmentTrader come from?
Mostly from people who don't need their reservations or appointments any longer. AT has no relationship with places listed and acts as a platform connecting buyers and sellers making sure that listed reservations are real and that privacy is not compromised when transacting.
What happens if my bid expires unanswered?
Hey @FluffyStar64, thanks for the question! When you place your bid the amount gets transferred in a deposit account, the second you either cancel your bid or a few minutes after the bid expires the funds are moved back into your main account from where you can refund it to your payment method or use for other transactions.
