Convivial Washington Reviews from The Last Year
I really enjoyed my dinner at Convival.
We booked a last minute reservation on a Saturday night, and they had plenty of availability. We were seated right away, and our server was friendly! The drink list was long, and everyone enjoyed their pairings. We ordered an assortment of food for the table, but everyone was completely satisfied with their meal! The mussels were massive and delicious, the trout with almonds was cooked perfectly, and the quiche portion filled the entire plate! We also enjoyed the beef bourguignon, and the pot-au-feu.

Came to Convivial with a group of 8 for restaurant week, and it was a great experience. The restaurant décor is beautiful with modern yet rustic vibes with the wooden walls and tables, as well as some nice outdoor seating. For food I got the Tartare de Beef appetizer, and the Beef Bourguignon and a Salmon Dish that I do not remember the name of, for mains! All of the ingredients in the dishes we had tasted super fresh and high quality, especially for the tartare de beef! The beef/steak is served raw, so it has to be good quality, with a beautiful egg yolk on top. Flavors were on point, salty, peppery, rich with the marinated beef, the salad and frites on the side compliment the richness nicely. The Beef Bourguignon was my favorite dish overall! Suuuuper tender beef in such a savory and deeply flavorful sauce. The veggies braised in the sauce were tender and delicious, and the potato mash was fantastic and seasoned to perfection. A great combination of classic beef bourguignon ingredients! Lastly the salmon dish was also pretty amazing. The fish was perfectly cooked, nicely grilled and seasoned, it just melted in your mouth. The service is exceptional, our server was super attentive even with our large table, and the owner even came out to greet us and chat, super friendly and inviting energy! Definitely will be back for the next restaurant week for sure.
May be the best French cuisine in Washington, DC.
Comparable to the best in Paris and southern France. The chef and team here you can tell takes pride in everything that walks out to the dining room. The service is timely, knowledgeable and thoughtful. Nice for a late date, a small group brunch or to just sit at the bar.
I was in town for business and this was our last dinner in
I was in town for business and this was our last dinner in DC. Absolutely beautiful dinner and service. I had the loup de mer, a whole boneless bronzino. I have never had the opportunity to order a fish like this and I am so glad I did. Absolutely lovely and satisfying but not heavy. The sauce and vegetables beneath the fish were delicious. The dessert was a tasty chocolate cake. Service was lovely.
Good food, lacking ambience and it was a very rushed service. ..........................................................
We were looking for a proper French Restaurant in DC. I will say that the service was very friendly, and the food was better than I expected due to the facility itself. It missed the mark on ambience for us as we enjoy the "French" dining experience. It was a quick in and out dinner, but the food was pretty spot on. We wont return due to the lack of ambience, but it sufficed
Food was ok.
Service decent. Ordered the bouillabaisse which wasn't as delicious as I thought. Dessert was good. Bone marrow was cold and I wasn't sure if it was meant to be but not appetizing at all
A delightful evening. And the food was great as well
For dinner with friends from the summer in Vermont. The "moulees frites was a popular dish, and of course t he octopus was a winner, despite the fact that all of us had seen the movie, My Octopus Teacher. I would return.
Ambiance was great.
Saturday night dinner with visitors from out of town, restaurant was full, lively but not too crowded or loud. The restaurant has a very comfortable feel. Service was perfect. Our waiter stopped in regularly to check on us, brought out orders promptly (thanks kitchen staff), and was patient with indecisive customers with kids! Food was ... okay. But at this very high price point I was expecting another level. Escargots were good; but it's only butter/garlic/parsley...but they were cooked perfectly. Seven for $17 dollars. Steak and frites...not good. I don't know what cut of meat they use, but mine was laced with grisel and appeared to be a cheaper cut and thoroughly pounded. I say appeared because I couldn't really see it as is was drowned in a very thick, sweet sauce/gravy. I'm not Gordon Ramsey, but the fries appeared to be frozen fries, and many of them were hard/dry, overcooked. Again, for the $38 price, I was expecting more from the dish. The $16 soup a l'oignon was PERFECT...the high point of the entire meal for me. My friend had the mussels, she loved them and they certainly give you a full portion. Great sopping up the juice with excellent, crusty bread. We had a nice time, with a slightly above average meal, but don't believe I'll be going back. Simply too expensive for what we had.
Good food, bad service charge
Convivial is a French-style cafe with a large brunch menu. It's a spacious, light-filled space that is inviting and homey. Good coffee and pancakes with apples and mascarpone. It has decided to adopt the DC trend of adding a mandatory 20% service charge to the checks. This is a junk fee - either let me tip what I want or add the service charge to the menu prices - and the service wasn't even that good; they did not keep my coffee cup full. So they get the 2-star deduction that I give to all restaurants applying this charge.
I went to Convivial for dinner with a friend before going
I went to Convivial for dinner with a friend before going to see a play at the Washington Stage Guild. They are very strict on reservation time, so make sure you're not late! I love the feel of Convivial inside, although some of the tables are super close together. We ordered burrata appetizer to share, which was delicious. Creamy and rich, as burrata should be, with a nice contrast to the crispy kale. For the entree, I had the bronzino, which was cooked well and served in a delicious, velvety sauce. I may have like the sauce more than the actual fish, to be honest. For dessert, we shared the macaron, which was filled with a lemon curd and served atop some kind of berry sauce. I could've definitely ate the whole thing myself, it was a perfect meal ending. For drinks, I ordered the St. Ex - a seasonal gin-based cocktail, which I enjoyed. Overall, the meal was solid, and the service was friendly. They did forget to bring us espressos we ordered at the end of the dinner, but by the time they realized their mistake, we had to leave for the play. Convivial is definitely pricey, but for a nice dinner out, it's a good option. It just doesn't have that craveable quality that some other spots in the city do at this price point. However, I'd like to come back for brunch, since it's well-known for that.
I dined at Convivial with friends a little over a year ago
I dined at Convivial with friends a little over a year ago for my birthday and really enjoyed it. Everything was delicious. My husband and I chose it this year for a special Valentines day dinner and it was underwhelming at best. We were there at 5:15pm which was a fairly light seating. Not many people were in the dining room. The appetizers were good but the entrees were very mediocre. My fish was rubbery, wet, and undercooked, not flakey, and it lacked flavor. The server offered me a new one but brought back the same one which I guess had been cooked a little longer and was still lacking in flavor and texture. The manager stopped by to ask if it was better but didn't really seem interested in whether we enjoyed the food. It was very mediocre and not the same quality that I enjoyed a year ago. I was very disappointed.
Completely excellent service and delicious food.
We enjoyed sitting at the bar on our second visit. The bartender was very kind and helpful. We love Convivial!!!
We started off our brunch with a mimosa and Bloody Mary.
The mimosa was good, but the Bloody Mary was a little watered down, thus I will not be ordering it again. For our hors d'oeuvres, we ordered the grilled octopus. The octopus was delicious as well as the potato salad that was also on the plate. Our entrées included the quiche and the steak and eggs. The entrées were both very large portions. The steak was cooked perfect but it did have a lot of fat that I needed to cut off. The service was excellent, but was a little slow to start. The actual environment and ambiance were just OK to me. It was an interesting interior design for a French eatery. I enjoyed my time and can see myself back here again trying something new.
Came here for restaurant week and think they definitely had
Came here for restaurant week and think they definitely had one of the strongest offered in the city. Their entire menu was available for each of the courses which is quite a switch from just the three least popular menu items offered at most places it seems . We were a seated quickly with a reservation on a Saturday... there were people without reservations waiting for tables so something to be aware of! We were surprised when we were seated at a table of 4 with just 2 of us and it was crowded.... They did come back and move our table to a 2 top after about five minutes.... No worries though they apologized and gave us a free glass of champagne for the trouble! Gotta love that For dinner we had the escargot and split pea soup to start. The escargot was good but def not my fav in the city ,however my partner said he liked it more than other places cause it wasn't just garlic and butter and had lots of herbs as well.... So guess it just depends on if you like garlic and butter like me or are a rabbit who likes parsley haha. The spilt pea soup was, good but also very odd in the sense I wasn't quite sure if it was meant to be eaten with a spoon cause there was also like a sausage casing of fois Gras and not a lot of soup.... So wasn't quite sure what to do with it, but was good. Entrees we got the cassoulet (a personal fav dish) and the beef Bourguignon. Both solidly good. Not sure if I would say either are the best in DC but also don't think people would be disappointed. All in all while maybe not my favorite French spot in DC will definitely come back and try out some other items
Perfect Christmas meal
We had an absolutely perfect meal here. My mom was visiting for Christmas. The service was amazing - above and beyond! I wish I got our waiters name but he had longer hair combed back. The food was some of the best I’ve had. Especially recommend the French onion soup!
Convivial is where we dined for a birthday dinner.
The service and food were great. The pate appetizer was delicious. I recommend ordering the mussels and fries as an entree.
Excellent Food. Service Needs Some Improvement
We ate brunch here the Sunday after Thanksgiving. I wanted to support the restaurant after reading the interview of the owner after the recent crime incident nearby. Our food was excellent. Three ordered to Eggs Benedict and one ordered a Quiche. Fries were perfectly cooked and the salad perfectly dressed. My only complaints are with the service. Our waiter was friendly and attentive. The food arrived just two minutes after the drinks were served, not allowing us to enjoy them first. May biggest complaint was that a 20% gratuity was added and we were not notified by the waiter or was it highlighted on the bill. It may have been listed on the menu, but none of us noticed it. I don't have a problem with the amount, of course, but definitely don't like it when not notified. We almost tipped an additional 20%, which I am quite sure happens frequently with groups who don't pay attention. I doubt the restaurant would notify diners about double tipping, but hopefully they would have the professionalism to do so.
The worst decision was going to Convivial the night after
The worst decision was going to Convivial the night after getting back from Paris. It was hard to not directly compare and some dishes fell short. The beef tartare was the worst I've ever had. The butter salad was wonderful. The tuna carpaccio was so great! I got the steak as my meal and it was just ok. Overall it was a fine meal but wouldn't rush to return.
Delivered perfect French cuisine, but service needs more attention
We sat outside on the patio to celebrate our anniversary. The food was absolutely perfect, the way you’d enjoy it in France. We chose dishes that were classic French: leeks, escargots, moules, and boeuf Bourguignon. The kitchen delivered superbly. The moules were a feast. The service, though, was very uneven. The grumpy hostess was curt and unwelcoming in a very French way. This might not appeal to those unfamiliar with Parisian bistros. Our server was stretched (our wine by the glass arrived before our kir royales), but he knew well the menu and the wines and made good suggestions.
Restaurant Week Success!
Delicious! We came for restaurant week and the food was delicious, portions were fair, and service was great. We had the escargot, mussels, steak frites, branzino and some great desserts as well! Will be back
Simply very good.
A very good waiter with very good recommendations. From the starters to the desert very high-quality food, deliciously prepared. Excellent service. The dinner was worth every dollar we paid.

Need to cancel a bid, not getting a response… how do I do it? |
Click on "Take off the Market Option" in your portfolio
Working on your bid? |
Your bid has been “matched” with a reservation. From the time a reservation has been located, the seller of the reservation must connect with moderator to give transfer information for reservation. If the seller;however, does NOT respond to reservation transfer, then your bid is reprocessed and returns to the first step, which is connecting your request to a reservation.
Process after bid is accepted. |
Hey @EvocativeFold67, welcome to appointmenttrader! Once the reservation is in your portfolio, you definitely own the timeslot, the review team would not have approved the trade if the reservation wasn't confirmed - so you are going :-) Judging from your post you bid today and are going tomorrow - don't worry as long as you initiated the name transfer, you are good - the transfer service has to work with the opening hours of the reservation team of the respective venue. You will likely see the transfer confirmation a couple hours before your reservation time.
Where do the Reservations on AppointmentTrader come from? |
Mostly from people who don't need their reservations or appointments any longer. AT has no relationship with places listed and acts as a platform connecting buyers and sellers making sure that listed reservations are real and that privacy is not compromised when transacting.
What happens if my bid expires unanswered? |
Hey @FluffyStar64, thanks for the question! When you place your bid the amount gets transferred in a deposit account, the second you either cancel your bid or a few minutes after the bid expires the funds are moved back into your main account from where you can refund it to your payment method or use for other transactions.
How to list a Nobu Malibu reservation
Hi, I have a reservation to Nobu Malibu, but since they don't do text or e-mail confirmations I haven't been able to get my reservation posted. I have posted a screen shot of the phone conversation on the listing, but it keeps getting rejected. If anyone has an idea how I can get it approved that would be much appreciated, thanks!

I posted a request for a reservation this Thursday between 6:30 and 8 pm and initially the potential seller said it would be fulfilled by today. Now they changed it that they will only fulfill it by 5pm that same day. Basically I would have an hour and a half to get to the restaurant. Is this allowed?

This app is a catfish and overrun by people programming “bots” and algorithms. It makes it frustrating for someone not well versed in this to have any movement. I thought this would be a fun side hustle, but unfortunately it’s become like any other “side hustle”. Don’t waste your time with this crap. Not a question, just a suggestion. Also don’t pay these fake “gurus” hundreds of dollars to teach you. Might as well sign up for a software class. 😕
