Commis Oakland Reviews from The Last Year
Really great.
I've made it a goal to spin through all of bay areas tasting menus and this is one of the top so far, especially for the price. Also really appreciate that 20% gratuity is included within the menu price, props to them! I would describe this dinner as an exercise in flavour perfection. Too often you go to a tasting menu and there's just stuff that doesn't taste good. Not here! Everything was delicious and varied. Course progression was well planned. The highlights for me were the lamb, sea bream, and cod. Cooked perfectly and such amazing and differentiated flavors. Actually their specialty farm egg was a bit too sweet I thought. I've seen comments that they are not as innovative as others, and would agree that I've been to more creative tastings, but they far make up for it in deliciousness. Service was fine, could be better for a two star but nothing that is going to ruin your dinner unless you are a snob.
I was so disappointed that Commis is not that special
I was so disappointed that Commis is not that special anymore. I came here like seven years ago and was blown away by the food and service. I decided to bring my family to try it too. First of all, I agree with the other review, the person greeted us at front felt so cold and arrogant. I felt zero warmth from him, which was such a bad start. The server inside was nice and attentive but food was kinda boring. They served like two courses with cold caviar/salty seafood in row. It makes you want some warm and starchy food so badly. The rice in clay pot was so mediocre and I do not find any creativity in it. The desert- they played way too hard on salty and sweet things. It doesn't taste like anything and felt weird in the end. In the end I was even craving normal sweet ice cream Lastly, one of the dish they served the dumpling even had chip on it. What a shame for a two star restaurant:(.
I'll keep this brief.
Stunning restaurant. Lovely hospitality. I wanted to cry tears of elation at two courses. I could be a bumpkin who doesn't know any better, but I don't think it's likely since I was raised to indulge in all culinary experiences since I was a kid. My palette is humble and incredibly pretentious (lol, what a ridiculous thing to say, but a true one.) If you truly want to appreciate this experience, let go of your ego (if you're a self-proclaimed "foodie"). This food might seem "pretentious". It's not. I swear it isn't. The flavors aren't so out of this world that you can't get lost in them. There's a familiarity in the flavor, but the fucking technique is out of this world. I recommend going alone at least once so you can savor the experience and cry to yourself when you bite into a dish that catapults you to a place and time from your childhood or transports you to a faraway destination you've never been to but you know deep in your veins. Yea. This cuisine does that. It appeals to all of your senses. I'd bite into something, and I could vividly imagine the ocean spray on my face or what it might be like to live in another country. The visions got VIVID. I don't possess the vocabulary to express how incredible this experience was. Book the reservation and just GO! Thank you to the Commis staff and back of house.
A true gem for locals and visitors alike!
My husband and I are big fans of Commis. We’ve enjoyed other multi-course tasting menus in SF and the East Bay, but Commis always comes out on top. The service is top-notch without being pretentious, the wine pairings are always spot on, and the dishes themselves are amazing. We also appreciate the small, intimate setting. Commis was a life-saver during the pandemic—their to-go boxes were fantastic—but it’s much nicer to revisit the place in person for special occasions. They’re amazing!

I had been waiting for so long to try Commis, and while the food was spectacular, the lackluster and borderline rude service made the experience memorable only in a bad way. Having been to numerous Michelin restaurants in SF and the world, this level of service is definitely not customary (nor enjoyable / recommended). The restaurant itself is beautiful, a minimalistic interior with special and detailed touches throughout. From pretty much the time we arrived, we were met with a cold and stern attitude, primarily from the front of house attendant who also doubled as a waiter/server. He was brusque, abrupt, and couldn't be bothered to engage with us in any meaningful way. Our primary server was slightly better throughout meal service, but also seemed bothered when we'd ask for more information about the meals. He'd put a plate down and mention a couple ingredients that we couldn't really hear, and then after asking more information he'd reluctantly go into more detail. We were also seated in a front of house section with multiple empty tables so already felt secluded. The real kicker was that I asked after the bill came to take a picture of the first wine he served as part of the beverage pairing, and he took a deep sigh and rolled his eyes before telling me that it was on the menu takeaway that came with the bill. Not sure why this gesture of appreciation of their beverage menu came as such an inconvenience. I'm also not going to detail our journey with trying to get to the restroom, but tl;dr the FOH guy told us there's only one bathroom and it was occupied, and that he'll come tell me when it's free (to which, even after 20 minutes and multiple requests, he never did). By the way -- there's a second bathroom (same size/quality) in the back by the kitchen which we saw another guest use and which we requested . Not sure why Mr. FOH treated it like a secret. Anyways, like I said - the food was spectacular. The onion financier with sour cream and the pacific oysters were some of the best bites I've ever had. The Japanese sea bream melts in your mouth. And one of the best dessert candies I've ever had was the calamansi and fish sauce caramel. To die for, truly. I also would mention that the above only details a handful of weird/rude/bizarre experiences with the staff at Commis. I really wish my local neighborhood Oakland Michelin star restaurant would be nicer to the patrons of their own neighborhood. My friend and I dropped $900 to be treated like we were unwelcome at Commis. Disappointing. The bar looked nice and offers a smaller 4-course offering with what appeared to be friendly bar staff - if anything, I'd suggest that if you're looking to visit.
I don't think Commis needs me to write a review for them.
I'm pretty sure they will get plenty of people coming by regardless. But I do feel that they deserve every positive comment that is on this site. We came in to celebrate an event and everyone tried to make it as special as possible. Staff were extremely attentive (first time I've ever had anyone take my coat), and willing to discuss the dishes. I got the black sesame lemonade, and I'm amazed about how they were able to fit the sesame flavor into the clear lemonade. It was delicious and great that they had non alcoholic options. If you are more of a wine and cocktail person, they have plenty of options for you. I loved every single dishes that was presented. Honestly, I was so full and tired (because it was a multi hour dinner but don't let that deter you) at the end of the meal. They even brought out an additional dessert for our celebration event. Yes it's pricey. Yes it's a long dinner. But if you want an experience, then I highly recommend coming to Commis.
A spot that's worth trying once.
Beautifully plated and solid, but not super memorable. I was also pregnant when I came here so many things I had to give to my husband or substitute.
Celebrated our anniversary here at the only 2 Michelin
Celebrated our anniversary here at the only 2 Michelin restaurant with 2 stars across the bay bridge. It's a $225/person tasting menu with Thai and European influences. We got the drink pairing for an additional $119 and it was totally worth it to complete the amazing dining experience at Commis. Chef Syhabout's food is delicate, balanced, and uses different texture to make the dish interesting. Every bite was incredibly memorable and has a dynamic development of flavor. All the components/ingredients' flavor profile works perfectly together. The sommelier was knowledgeable and walked us through the different tasting notes of each drink and how to best focus the flavor with each food pairing. A steady rotation of different members of the crew served us, including the chef himself. It felt very modest, and non-pretentious. Though, there were minor awkward moments here and there but overall, great experience.

Been here a couple times to celebrate special occasions and would 100% recommend!! Such a wonderful gem to have in the East Bay :) I've been telling anyone who will listen about the fantastic levain bread and chicken skin butter combo. The tom yum popcorn is such a fun twist on a classic snack and the protein in the mains were cooked to perfection. For any first-timers on the fence about making a reservation, try out the bar seating!! The ambiance there is welcoming, you get to watch your drinks prepared right in front of you and can enjoy a bit of a louder atmosphere where chit chat is welcome. Also if you're wondering whether or not the wine pairing is "worth it" ...it is ;)

The food was delicious though several dishes were a bit salty for my taste. Each dish was presented very beautifully but the cohesion of the dishes confused me. Regardless, everything was delicious and you wouldn't know it in the beginning, but the entire seated course is very filling that I could've probably just went with the bar seated course. The service was great but not interactive. Definitely a place to try since it is the only Michelin starred restaurant in the East Bay.

Date of Visit: 3/5/2024 We visited the 2 Michelin Star
Date of Visit: 3/5/2024 We visited the 2 Michelin Star restaurant Commis to celebrate our Anniversary. Commis was established in 2009 and was awarded with 1 Michelin star during the same year, and won the recognition of 2 Michelin stars in 2016. It is the only restaurant with a Michelin Star in the East Bay area! Head chef and owner is James Syhabout, and some of the dishes and cooking methods reflect the background of Syhabout, who has a Thai mother and a Chinese father. Tasting Menu is priced at $225 per person with an optional beverage pairing of $119 per person. My husband got the beverage pairing and I ordered one cocktail and one glass of wine throughout the course. Commis Restaurant was separated into two areas. One is the bar area with a high top and chandelier. The other area with the open kitchen is the main dining room. Interior has dark wood paneling, and fresh flowers and candles on every table. My husband ordered the beverage pairing for $119, with mostly white wines from different regions around the globe, and with one GSM red wine, one California's sake and one port style dessert wine. I ordered one refreshing cocktail, Nothing Like a Nice Pear $21, to pair with the appetizers. And during the main course, I ordered a glass of the Pilcrow printer's devil cabernet sauvignon from Napa Valley for $30. Caramelized onion financier with sour cream Pacific Oyster with local kiwi & coconut Watercress wafer with salmon roe & fresh horseradish First course is a combination of three tiny plates, with oyster, salmon roe wafer, and financier. Hokkaido scallop with kaluga caviar, prawn gelee & makrut lime One of my favorite courses of the day. The mixed texture of scallop and caviar was amazing. Monterey bay abalone with hot mustard & celtuce Another favorite of mine! The abalone with the spicy mustard and flowers was full of surprises. Dungeness Crab & Chrysanthemum soup, celeriac & meyer lemon This dish is the soup of the day. Green celeriac soup with Dungeness crab inside. On the side were dried chrysanthemums, which are for decoration purposes, but the smell of the flowers is at the nose with every sip. Slow poached egg yolk, smoked dates, alliums & malt The next dish came with a bowl of slow poached egg yolk and a warm bread. Steamed Cod with Potato & Clam, toasted curry with lemongrass This one has a taste of Thai cuisine. Toasted curry and lemongrass mixed with all the air bubbles; the slow cooked steamed cod was in the middle. Roast Heirloom Chicken, Sunchokes with Koji & Green garlic, black truffle The main course is roast heirloom chicken. The mixture of the softness and chewiness of the chicken skin was great! In the middle was the black truffle sauce that went very well with the chicken. Scallion Rice, chanterelle mushroom miso from shared cultures, chicken broth The last savory course is the scallion rice. The flowers and vegetables added some color to the seasoned rice. On the side was a warm chicken broth, great paired with the rice. Matcha with soybean milk, fermented black bean caramel First dessert is the match ice cream with fermented black bean caramel and soybean milk. Coffee, Dried Plum & Black Garlic Waffles The main dessert is coffee ice cream with dried plum. In the middle is a crunchy waffle with black garlic inside. And to celebrate our Anniversary, there is a wafer cookie with honey and top and Jasmine ice cream in between. Calamansi & Fish Sauce Caramel Lotus Cookie Coconut, Pineapple & Absinthe Capsule Last dessert is some finger bites. The lotus cookie was tasty and the coconut and pineapple capsule was one of my favorites too!
Came back to try the more limited bar prix fixe menu.
This is a shorter more casual experience than in the main dining room, but delivers on the fine dining aspects and still comes with a beverage pairing. We added on the caviar option to the four course menu, which was a perfect bite. Not to be outdone, from the small bites was a wagu beef tartare which ranks at the top of my list for umami taste and texture. The big eye tuna salad is a marvel and was followed by the slow poached egg yolk (which appears to be a menu staple), a steak and desert. The desert was the only miss for me. The drink pairing with a yuzu sake and combined with the lemon posset needed something to break up the tartness - like ginger snap, or less yuzu. But that is probably just a personal preference, the experience is still worth it. The staff were awesome too and always ready to engage and answer questions. So glad I found out about this bar service. A great option if the full menu is too much food or time and you still get that to die for bread and butter.

This place is special, and deserves every accolade it has received. Go with an open mind, and a full wallet. Explore the menu on your own, or ask your server for suggestions. You'll have a great dining experience in this chic culinary sensation on Piedmont Avenue in Oakland
food is amazing and well plated even for takeout.
Everything is fresh and it's worth all the stars and one of the few super fine dining places in Oakland.
I dined here back in August and got the tasting menu.
It was a very creative meal and I loved that I got to try new ingredients for the first time, such as, lotus root and guinea hen. Their signature dish, slow poached egg yolk with smoked dates, alliums, and malt was one of my favorite things that I ate all year, it was true perfection. I also especially loved the tomatoes with oysters, scallion rice, celtuce with mussels, and the pain perdu dessert. Commis was also a pretty good price compared to the other 2 michelin starred restaurants in the area.
This is a really nice, exquisite, and classic fine dining
This is a really nice, exquisite, and classic fine dining restaurant and in all places in Oakland. The food is delicious and the menu fresh and inviting. The service is impeccable as well.
Food - We had the tasting menu at the bar area.
Tomato dish (in the pic ) was the best of all:) I would have preferred Kumamoto oyster without the watermelon topping though. Mocktail looked beautiful:) Service- I wish I asked his name, but one of the bartenders/servers there with ponytail was sooooo amazing. We loved his enthusiasm and love for food as he was speaking to us. He made food sound so delicious even before we tried:) Ambiance - was great and chilling grown up atmosphere:)
I was happy that I was able to reserve bar seating super
I was happy that I was able to reserve bar seating super last minute. I originally wanted to do the full tasting menu, but reservations on Tock only has option for a party of 2-4 and I mostly fly solo when having these tasting menus. However, I was thoroughly satisfied with the bar prix fixe and wine pairings. EVERYTHING was creative and delicious!!! And all the team members were very nice! Parking is street parking, but there is also a Kaiser parking structure around the block.

Great Service - amazing dinner!!
Read about the site in NYT and bought a reservation at Mother Wolf in LA 2 days later. Worked great and the food was amazing!!!
Worked perfectly!
Got the reservation (that I couldn't get anywhere else) and was able to entertain a group of friends at the infamous Bern's Steakhouse.
Got into Nobu Malibu
Wonderful! My parents are visiting and we have wanted to go to Nobu Malibu for years. I tried getting a reservation myself but it was next to impossible. So glad I was able to buy a reservation on appointment trader for a decent price!
Very easy
Was very hesitant going into this experience but am glad to say that it worked out very well ! will definitely use appointment trader in the future
Fabulous Lunch
I was veeeeeerry skeptical that this would work, particularly at a restaurant as hard to get into as Nobu Malibu, and it was perfect! We had lunch outside on the patio and it was fabulous!
Great reviewer team
Just wanted to take a second to shout out the reviewer team. Even though they probably review hundreds of listings and bids a day, they still take the time to leave great comments and respond relatively quickly. Thanks!
Incredible
I got a reservation to Don Angie, which I've been trying to book for weeks! I am very happy with this service.
Best platform out there!
Super simple, easy, and fast to secure reservations for hard-to-get restaurants and locations!
This app is life changing
This app has opened my world up to so many wonderful new experiences I would never have the chance to have without access to this awesome app! 10/10!
Worked perfectly
Was a little nervous at first but was pleased to see that the booking went through flawlessly.
Highly recommended.
Success on Short Notice
Was able to snag an indoor table at Don Angie through an absolutely seamless worry-free process.

Worked well, got me into a restaurant with no availability
I was skeptical, and I still don't really know how they managed to find this hard-to-find reservation, but it was a win-win from my point of view, and I'll use this service again.
Last minute reservation for Delilah Las Vegas
Got a last minute reservation, dinner for 2 at Delilah Las Vegas: super impressed! The process was simple, transaction seamless. We had an amazing time! Couldn’t be happier! 😍
It works!
Ok at this point I've attended a reservation purchased on AT by a friend and sold a reservation personally. Both worked pretty smoothly, nothing sketchy about it. A few areas for improvement including a way to more directly communicate between buyers and sellers, but the app always seems to be in development. AT customer support is really(!) responsive and helpful too if you have questions!
Money transfer
As a seller, I like the fact i have the ability now to transfer money out of my AT account and into a bank account. Makes getting the money much easier then the process before.
Love this app
Got to go to places otherwise unreachable
Easy Access
Very easy to get into one of the hardest restaurants to reserve in New York.
Whose name will my reservation be under when I arrive at the venue?
It can be under your name or a name you choose! Some reservation offers already include the AppointmentTrader Transfer Service which will transfer the reservation in to your name. If its not included you can add it on after buying the reservation for a small fee. One thing on that though: As many reservations become available at last minute, taking a reservation in someone else name is quick and great for privacy. Most reservations on AT are listed with a virtual phone number, so all you need to do is present the phone number at the hostess stand and you are good to go!
Payouts Blocked Because of Sell Through Rate
Does anyone know how AT plans to handle cases where a seller is quitting the platform but has a sell through rate <25%? The error message I got said to fill more bids or find other ways to increase the rate.
Is AT really going to block sellers from withdrawing their money? Especially revenue made before the sell through rate was introduced??
Tune into NBC News - Top Story Tonight 7:40p ET
Let’s go. Get more people placing bids!
I will give you 50% of ALL of my PROFITS if you teach me how to make profits?
LOL. Thank you The New Yorker.
Appointment
Transferring reservations is not supported in AT. Why not just use the name in the AT screenshot?
Buyers interested in Bern's Steakhouse: PLEASE READ
Same goes for 4 Charles and I Sodi
Prepaid Reservation Fee
Agreed. Ultimately not addressing this month after month is clearly resulting in a drop in certain venue’s rankings & sales.
Congrats on 3 mil
🍾🍾🍾🍾🍾🍾🧨🧨🧨 now on to 30 mill!
Need to cancel a bid, not getting a response… how do I do it?
Click on "Take off the Market Option" in your portfolio
Working on your bid?
Your bid has been “matched” with a reservation. From the time a reservation has been located, the seller of the reservation must connect with moderator to give transfer information for reservation. If the seller;however, does NOT respond to reservation transfer, then your bid is reprocessed and returns to the first step, which is connecting your request to a reservation.
Process after bid is accepted.
Hey @EvocativeFold67, welcome to appointmenttrader! Once the reservation is in your portfolio, you definitely own the timeslot, the review team would not have approved the trade if the reservation wasn't confirmed - so you are going :-) Judging from your post you bid today and are going tomorrow - don't worry as long as you initiated the name transfer, you are good - the transfer service has to work with the opening hours of the reservation team of the respective venue. You will likely see the transfer confirmation a couple hours before your reservation time.
Where do the Reservations on AppointmentTrader come from?
Mostly from people who don't need their reservations or appointments any longer. AT has no relationship with places listed and acts as a platform connecting buyers and sellers making sure that listed reservations are real and that privacy is not compromised when transacting.
What happens if my bid expires unanswered?
Hey @FluffyStar64, thanks for the question! When you place your bid the amount gets transferred in a deposit account, the second you either cancel your bid or a few minutes after the bid expires the funds are moved back into your main account from where you can refund it to your payment method or use for other transactions.
