Chubby Fish Charleston Reviews
OMG the food is amazing.
Simply a cut above. Everything we had on the two nights we went - yes we went twice because the food was so outstanding - was simply wonderful. The fish, seafood and oysters were so fresh and were combined with flavors that just made them sing. The black bass tempura with the soy beurre blanc sauce melts in your mouth. My husband loved the raw oysters. The fried oyster roll with dill tartar sauce and freshly made chips is soooo amazingly good. The chili garlic shrimp was such a fantastic combo of flavors and the shrimp were so fresh. The blue crab tagliatelle was a scrumptious pasta dish with leeks, asparagus and trout roe that had a creamy, lemony flavor that was balanced with the salty roe. I'm not generally a fan of roe but it was just what the dish needed. Staff is so friendly and nice. The recognized us the second night and made us feel so welcome. You have to get in line 30 to 45 minutes before they open at 5pm to get a table and on the second night we were prepared to stand in the rain to get in. We have had some great seafood in Charleston but this is by far and away the top of heap.
10 out of 10 dinner! We were able to book the large table
10 out of 10 dinner! We were able to book the large table for a party of ten, committing to a food and beverage minimum. The menu is a surprise although you can request some types of items. The best things were the caviar sandwiches (what??) for being unique, any of the fresh fish and the desert. The desert was an icecream that looked like fried chicken in the most realistic way but tasted like the most amazing crunch coated creamy sweet treat. Try some of the stuff you might not normally- example the celery salad was such a cool dish and the lamb was lovely!

Everything was so good - one of the best meals I've ever had. Caviar sandwiches were delicious. Grilled oysters were the only thing that I wouldn't get again but still good. Fish curry had amazing flavor, but maybe a little heavy on rice compared to other ingredients. Lambs ribs were one of the best things I've ever tasted. Five stars if they took reservations. Almost a three hour wait on a Thursday is stupid. Grow up and take reservations like a real restaurant.
The moment you walk up & are greeted by the hostess, you
The moment you walk up & are greeted by the hostess, you know youre in for a treat at Cubby Fish! Part of Chubby's charm is that its tucked into a Charleston Row House in the Elliotborough neighborhood, so you'll really get a sense of Charleston via the location alone. (But that also means space may be limited, so be sure to arrive early!) We are locals and have had the pleasure of eating at Chubby Fish several times now, each time included shareable experiences & phenomenal food. Also, we've never heard a native say a single negative thing about Chubby Fish, which tells you something! Its hard to choose a single item from their menu because everything we've had has been memorable for its curation of flavors. But we cannot get enough of the Beef Marrow Bone, we order it everytime. And the Blue crab Tagliatelle has roe on top; the little pops of saltiness elevated the dish to another level. But if you do have a hard time making a decision, the waitstaff & sommeliers are all knowledgeable, easy to talk with, and eager to make sure you have a top-notch experience.
Hostess lies and doesn't say anything straight.
Makes false promises and then gaslights you into thinking you're in the wrong. Was excited to eat here, but will never come back. Overhyped, and the fame got to their heads for sure. Eat somewhere else and save your money and time.
Absolutely worth every single penny.
The line was so long we weren't sure we'd get a table, but once we got our table it was such a great experience. The food was absolutely incredible. We had the caviar sandwiches, half dozen oysters, the "fried chicken" ice cream and a noodle dish. The wine selection was also a highlight with a skin contact natural wine available.
Chubby Fish is worth the wait time.
See, everyone stated I must go to Chubby Fish! I walked down the residential streets to find this unassuming restaurant on the corner and was told that it was a 45 minute wait time. Being famished I opted not to wait and I left that day. I was told to come around opening. I thought I was so clever I arrived ten minutes before opening. The line stretched 150 feet according to my GPS. Yea, apparently I was not clever enough or too many people were more clever! I waited patiently as the line moved forward taking fifteen minutes to get to the front where the hostess informed me I had two choices. I could either wait another four hours or eat immediately at a communal standing table. I went with the standing table. I joined four other woman at this standing table that was not much wider than a narrow bar top. The restaurant was packed. It was fairly loud, but not so loud that I couldn't hear people around me. Our waitress was wonderful. She was effortlessly cool. The tight spaces did not seemed not to phase her. She guided along appearing at perfect times to offer more wine or ask if we wanted more food. I mean, she made me relaxed despite not being in my element. It felt like this was her space and we were gracious guests. The ambiance became a group of strangers united by a love of wine and food. It was marvelous. My dining companions were strangers and as corny as it sounds we left as friends. Literally we went out after for drinks! Getting back to Chubby Fish the food was AMAZING. I stuck with the raw bar selections and no regrets. The oysters were grand. The tuna crudo buttery. The tuna toast with greens delightful. My taste buds sung and dance and celebrated. Chubby Fish is worth the wait and if you feel so bold the group table is a whole adventure!

Chubby Fish is one of the top 12 restaurants in the US for good reason. This was the desert, an ice cone shaped like a chicken drumstick; it was awesome. Our server was on point; she knew the menu and gave great wine suggestions. The Restaurant itself is pleasant, not overcrowded, and has a very fast-paced atmosphere. This is a no-reservation Restaurant, but it was sold out by 6 pm the night we went--200% recommended.
Oh yes, definitely a five-star meal.
The question is, what can I say about this wonderful fresh seafood restaurant that hasn't recently been written in the dozens of other positive reviews? We didn't look forward to standing in line prior to opening, but it became one of the highlights of our evening. We met some terrific people from within Charleston and around the country. As we discussed food, travel, food, occupations and food the time flew by. The menu is only available from a board posted on the front top wall, and I didn't bring my glasses. Not a problem, we (and other guests) simply walked up and took screenshots with our phones. The restaurant doesn't serve liquor, only beer and wine. Somehow, we survived ;) The raw oysters are served with a smoked caviar topping. Delicious, but I really enjoy some heat with mine. Have no fear, a restaurant-made hot sauce is available, just ask. Quite the kitschy plate-ware, see photo. I should've bought a t-shirt! I love the restaurant logo. It's great to sight-see the dishes being served to other tables. The curry smelled and looked wonderful. Seating is quite limited. I understand parties of three (and also large groups) may be asked to wait because most of the tables are arranged for two or four guests. Wish we had saved room for dessert. I'll be back

Celery salad is our favorite and the fresh selection of seafood, paired with the great wine and the lively ambiance makes for an all time Charleston favorite. Been here over 20 times and whenever friends or family are in town, we make it a point to take them. Cheers to one of the best restaurants in the south.
Good food, long wait and noisy
I know this place got a lot of hype but I don't get it. Yes, some of the food is really good, like the Crab Tagliatelle and the oyster rolls are fabulous. The cauliflower is good, but let's face it, it's cauliflower, The bone marrow was definitely not my thing but I know a lot of people like it. You can't order your own dinner so the table gets a bit of everything. It's expensive and so noisy you can't hear yourself think, let alone have a conversation. And don't even mention the ridiculous line to get in! The servers are really exceptional and answer any questions with patience and knowledge. If you don't mind the wait or the noise, go for it.
If you’re willing to wait, go here for elevated seafood dishes
We happened to drive by a looong line of people waiting on the sidewalk as we were leaving town to have dinner at Nick’s German Kitchen. Wondering what the wait was for, I checked my map program and found the likely source - Chubby Fish. After reading many raving reviews, and craving some seafood anyway, we decided to give this a try. So on a Saturday afternoon, we walked over to the Chubby Fish and were not too surprised that at 4PM on a Saturday we were not the first people in line, waiting for the 5 PM opening. (There were about 5 parties in front of us, so we were definitely positioned pretty well.) We were quite impressed, however, at how long the line would grow to be during the next hour. And how many cars would drive by, windows open, yelling “It’s worth the wait!” At 5 PM the doors promptly opened and two greeters came out to start seating people. We received the requested table by the window for the two of us, and were told to take a picture of the menu hanging above the bar to use for ordering. We decided on two appetizers - the tilefish ceviche and the wagyu beef tartare (my husband’s preferred choice, though I like to remind him he/we may end up with prion disease later on in life … he just comments that at least we’ll forget about it LOL). They came out separately and were both so delicious. Even my picky husband who had previously proclaimed that this restaurant might just be a money making fad aka “goldmine”, admitted that the dishes lived up to his hoped-for expectations. The tartare was served with rice and seaweed wraps, and we were instructed to combine the rice and tartare in the wrap, and eat it together. It was amazing! My husband’s European heritage initially struggled with this combination. But I was able to convince him to try it, and he quickly admitted what an unexpected treat this was! As a main course we had ordered the smoked sheepshead curry and the blue crab tagliatelle. My husband’s dish (tagliatelle) came out first, and he decided to wait for my dish to be served before starting his. Unfortunately by that time, his had cooled off a bit, which he criticized (to me). Later on we saw that the neighboring tables were sharing all main courses amongst one another, which prevented any need to wait for all dishes to be out before starting to eat. Both the curry as well as the tagliatelle were delicious. But we liked the spiciness of my curry dish paired with the roasted nuts so much, that we ordered another one, which we ended up getting boxed and taking home. Overall the food was great, our server was awesome and totally on the spot from the get go. Beer and sodas btw are served by the can, with cartoon character glasses. Prices are on the higher end, but I feel worth it for the excellent dishes. Was it worth getting in line an hour before opening to get a seat? I feel it was. Would I do it again? Yup. I’ll get in line here again. Or better yet come later during the week and hopefully avoid having to wait altogether, the next time I’m in town.
Got in at Chubby Fish
I am always hesitate to shell out five stars but the dish I had was a five star dish. It was wahoo with coconut and Brussels sprouts and it was the best dish I have had in a long time. Amazing! I was not a fan of the community table where my husband and I got the last seats, although the other dinners were delightful. But since we took a chance and were Lucky enough to get in, we made the most of the no reservations situation. Prices continue to go up on restaurant meals and sometimes I am uncomfortable with the amount we are spending. For this reason we may only go back for a really special occasion. The bill for the celery salad, tile fish curry entree (which was spicy and really too hot), wine and two beers for $140 was a lot for a Tuesday night.
Oops
We didn’t get. No reservations allowed and three hour wait for a table 😕 The maitre d’ recommended a great place around the corner. We told our waitress what happened. She said, “Oh, that’s my favorite restaurant.” Maybe next time.
It Really Does Show.
A brightly lighted stop on a busy street in the further part, so past Uhaul. It’s a draw for the eyes and ears as you step in and breathe. This is a restaurant. So go right in. Menu is filled with all kinds of offerings of Shellfish and Flatfish as Seviche and Crudo too. There really is some- thing there for everybody and Oysters too. The Lamb Ribs came first and I was surprised but they are good and hot. The Poached Barrel Fish was filled with Asparagus, Broccoli and Beets made spectacular by the Bone Broth Local sparkling water and no coffee. Service and kitchen are tremendously involved and it shows.
Excellent sharable dishes, great atmosphere
Cute neighborhood restaurant with eclectic interior. Beers were served in old smurf glasses. We sat at the bar in front of the food preparation area, and it was fun to watch all the excellent dishes being made. Had the grilled oysters, shrimp, and oyster roll. All fantastic. The highlight, surprisingly, was the banana pudding ice cream dessert!
The best seafood, ever! The seasonings on each dish
The best seafood, ever! The seasonings on each dish leaves you wondering, how did they do it, it's fantastic and unique. The whole fish, baked clams, spicy shrimp, root vegetables were all fantastic. All with great service
OMG! Is all I can can say! Best meal of my life.
My husband does not stand in line for food-ever. (he didn't-I did) but he did say after the meal that he would stand in line for this anytime. Celery salad, cauliflower, caviar sammich, curry. All beyond amazing! The best service - more appropriately referred to as "experience advisors"-our advisor Mandy was phenomenal. Love, love

Now I understand why everyone was standing in line before this place opened. All of the food we tried was delicious. We had the best seat in the house, right in front of the chefs. What an experience! I am a very picky seafood person and never thought I would be eating oysters but let me just say you must try the grilled oysters with crab fat. Really you actually should try just about everything they make..
Still the absolute BEST.
Went twice within a week and not sorry. Both times we were in line about 430 and got seated immediately, but if you were here by 5, I'm pretty sure you will still get to eat that night. All local SC oysters which were fabulous. Today, my favorite bite was the poached tilefish, but I will always love the smoked fish curry. Please, if you haven't been, just make a plan to come.

Definitely a must-taste restaurant for anyone looking for a seafood-focused meal. Firstly, Chubby Fish does not take reservations, so you will want to get there when they open to put your name in. If it's the weekend, expect to wait a couple of hours for a table- just have a nearby place in mind to grab drinks while you wait. There is no standing room in the restaurant, so don't expect to have drinks there while you wait unless you want to dodge waiters all night. The seafood is spectacular - caviar sandwiches for every person is a must. The romesco sauce on the lamb is also some of the best I've tried. I have eaten here at least 5 times and will continue eating here whenever I can. A little pricey but worth it.
AMAZING!!! I'm so in love with this place!! We were a party
AMAZING!!! I'm so in love with this place!! We were a party of 2 and sat at the bar where we were afforded the luxury of seeing the crew in action!!! Lucky us!! We started with two of each of the various oysters they had and were both delighted with the variation of flavors. My favorite was the select from NS, but they all were great!! We each ordered a small plate to share! The Cauliflower was recommended by a friend, so that's what I ordered and wasn't disappointed. The cauliflower appears to be roasted with a Parmesan crust. Very delish, and more than enough to share for a party of 4 (we had leftovers). The sauce with the cauliflower has just a little kick to it, but not too bad (I'm a wimp to spicy food and handled it with no problem ). We also ordered the celery salad, that was full of flavor!! This too is enough to share. For the main course, we went for the Swordfish Schnitzel with caviar butter and the Snowy Grouper!! Both dishes were delicious and beautifully displayed. The Swordfish came with a side of potato purée that was perfection!! The caviar butter on top of the swordfish was absolutely a fabulous combination!!! The fish was cooked to perfection with a lightly flavored coating. The grouper was the winner for me, but I LOVE a good grouper!! The green garlic sauce combined with the turnip vegetable mixture was AMAZINGLY delicious!! The grouper was cooked to perfection and the green garlic sauce with trout roe was a nice added flavor to the dish!! The wait was about an hour and the place was packed, so be patient, but it's worth the wait. The guys in the kitchen were great about making recommendations and giving us a little knowledge about the various dishes and oysters. The only negative was our server didn't seem to check on us much, but the guys behind the counter took great care of us. Still a 5 in my books and I plan to be back soon!!
A unique dining experience.
Unbelievably good food, excellent friendly service. Enough said!!
Trendy spot for the foodie in you.
They don't take reservations, so generally you need to start lining up 30 mins before 5pm to get that first seating. I went there for a friend's birthday and we went family style on the items. Each item is a bit tapas, some small and some little bigger. Their menu is always changing so these recommendations might be swapped out. We all like the chili garlic rice, smoked wahoo curry, and sheepshead tempura. I liked the blue fin crudo and cauliflower cacio pepe but not everyone did. Probably a great date spot, but is on the pricier side for portion size. They also serve raw oysters too. Cheers!
We came here for my friend's birthday.
We read online that they don't take reservations and that you better get there before they open. We got in-line at 4:30 and there were 5 people already ahead of us. The line is no joke. Once inside, the atmosphere is super laid back but cute. The staff was all very friendly and knowledgeable. We were told to order 6-7 plates for 4 people. Definitely not a cheap meal but so delicious! If I were to go back (which I'm sure I will!), I would order the chili garlic shrimp, smoked wahoo curry, and the sheepshead tempura! They were all amazing! I definitely recommend checking this place out.
Don't miss! We had a great time this is not your typical
Don't miss! We had a great time this is not your typical fish shop. Food was fabulous and unique. We asked the server what to get and were not disappointed. This was the special that month. Chefs kiss
Outstanding seafood in a town known for outstanding seafood
This was our first visit to this highly touted restaurant and it was so worth waiting in line for them to open up. We were seated at a bar overlooking the kitchen and I’m so glad we were since it’s entertaining to see the teamwork and meticulous artistry that goes into the cuisine they serve. There’s a wide variety of appetizers and small plates to start off with. We elected to share the grilled oysters and the blackfish tempura - both excellent. As a middle course, we shared the garlic shrimp over rice which was my favorite. As a main entree we ordered the whole Snapper which had a strange aftertaste - probably due to the begs they pour over the fish. The service here is so caring they immediately asked if we wanted a different entree and took the fish off the menu but we chose not to. Honestly the fish looked so delicious and I think it just wasn’t for us. Other dishes that looked wonderful were the tuna crudo, the monkfish and the fish collar. Wine was superb - we ordered a French Sauvignon Blanc. Can’t wait to go back.
