Chotto Matte San Francisco Reviews from The Last Year
I love the vibes here.
Great spot for a balcony indoor outdoor vibe in the city. Had drinks the other day and there was some issues that don't need to get mentioned, but Kevin (the manager or whatever he is) handled it professionally. As someone who used to be in this business, I appreciate people that can calmly respond to situations and deliver results without throwing service staff under the bus and also getting the clients what they need. Kudos to the team over there. I'll be back!
The drinks were amazing and the staff was on point.
Super nice spread a little too thinly but they managed well. The prices were steep given that most of the menu was basic. Like I love the view but the portion to price was not worth it.
TLDR: Probably the closest you can get to a trendy NYC bar
TLDR: Probably the closest you can get to a trendy NYC bar in SF. Chotto Matte is pricier than most 1 Michelin star restaurants in the city, and while the food is good, it lacks the "something special" you'd need to be a truly stand-out meal -- especially at these prices. But if you're dying to find a place with lots of energy and instagram-able spots, then this place could be for you. ------ FOOD: 1. Karaage chicken (5/5) - This is very good, crispy fried chicken with a healthy amount of gochujang on top, and definitely the best thing all night. But beware that it's $21 for 5 small pieces of chicken. 2. Pollo Den Miso (Miso chicken) (4.5/5) - Great savory option and easy to share. This comes with a lot more chicken than the karaage dish, so if you need your protein fix on a night out, I'd recommend this. Chicken was tender and I liked the other garnishes of the dish. 3. El Jardín Roll (4.5/5) - This is their vegetarian roll and despite me not being vegetarian, I liked this even more than the other rolls. They do a very good job of soaking the bok choy with their sake soy sauce, so each piece is not only flavorful but also not dry at all. 4. Maiz Tostada Chips (4.5/5) - 6-8 very large half-moon-shaped chips that come with a nice side of guac. Chips were crispy, nothing to complain about. This is $15 though. 5. Dragon roll (4/5) - Solid roll, not too dry, came with 8 pieces so was a larger serving 6. Black cod (4/5) - It was good and thankfully not too sweet but it tasted a touch undercooked and I've had better elsewhere. 7. Sato Maki (4/5) - Good, and came with a show (they torched each piece of sushi in front of us) 8. Pollo Picante (3.5/5) - Was dry and not that flavorful 9. Matcha Crepe Cake (3/5) - Not nearly as good as Lady M in that the crepes were thicker and very dry for some reason. The cream was good but there wasn't as much cream as you'd expect. If you're not a Lady M fanatic then you may like this more! 10. Spicy Edamade (3/5) - Edamame was small and too spicy 11. Lychee Ceviche (3/5) - A good vegetarian alternative to fish ceviche but otherwise this is just super expensive for what it is ------ SERVICE: * They changed our plates maybe 3 times throughout the dinner so that was nice, and I thought the timing of the plates was reasonable * However, it was really hard to communicate with the table staff so it was just a little harder to ask for things * The staff at the various front desks throughout the venue were great though, and when we asked for a picture at the end of the meal, the employee we asked even tried to get the lighting just right by using his own phone camera's light ------ ENVIRONMENT / AMBIANCE: * The closest I've felt to being in NY while in SF * This place is located in SoMa / Union Square and you take an elevator to get up to the restaurant * The space is huge, with lots of tables of all sizes inside and outside * Design wise, this place is vibrant and "hip", with graffiti in the bathroom and flower walls for photos if that's what you're into
Do not waste your time coming here.
For the price of everything service should be exceptional. We were here for an hour and a half and the waitress checked on us twice, and once only because we requested a busboy to bring her over for us as she had not come to refill our glasses from the bottle we paid for. The food is nothing good. Except for the yellowtail sashimi and the dragon roll there is nothing Peruvian about this place. Arroz chaufa is some sort of vegan flavorless rice. The "ceviche" is completely flavorless and you get 6 small cubes of fish. In SF on a rooftop, as expected it gets cold, but when we asked to get a heater near us we were told that it couldn't be done. 20 minutes later the two tables next to us got heaters brought closer to them. The bus boys were the only good service. Never coming back. For $400 this was horribly disappointing this place is gonna close down soon.

DO NOT BRING GROUPS! Bad service - I would not take a group here. I came for a birthday dinner and the staff was very cold. They would not let us order the tasting menu, because of some random rule they made up. You've been warned!
the lamb was good.
the churros were okay. the mochi was normal. the service was bad. the price was even worse. was at a private event and got skipped over multiple times probably because i was the youngest one there and the waitress had no respect for me. the dumplings weren't good and they were $25 for 5 of them. if you're not a wine drinker then expect a half filled glass of water and no chance to ask for a nonalcoholic beverage. the decorations and environment were nice but not worth the experience. i've had better edamame from walmart. just go to nobu instead.

The food is overpriced and its some of the worst I've ever eatten. I went there for lunch and got the bento box. I was disappointed. Probably won't go back.

This spot is perfect for a date night or celebration with loved ones where you can get all dressed up and relax. They had a Dj who was playing some funky dance music which had me moving in my seat. Shout out to the female Dj last Friday night! Everything and I mean everything is packed with flavor here. So much that I sort of wanted to ask for a side of rice haha and my absolute favorite was the black cod, chicken and the apple dessert. My least favorite was the sushi roll. It felt wet with every bite so it kinda of made the roll soggy but it still packed with flavor. They came and torched the sushi roll which was exciting but I wonder if that is what made it soggy. The drinks were amazing. The waitress was nice but refused to change the gin to tequila like I requested which was weird but I still enjoyed the cocktail even though gin is not one of my favorites. I'm from Los Angeles and she also made a little remark about if I'm from the nice part of Los Angeles. It was my first time in San Fran this weekend so I had fun regardless of the friendly fire because it WAS kind of funny. Iykyk. But there's nice people everywhere okay! Haha anyways I had an amazing night out and I will definitely come back to try out the rest of the menu. They also had meal packages where you can try different foods for a certain price. I will want to try that next time as well.
Amazing food and great service but this is super expensive
Amazing food and great service but this is super expensive so make sure your aware. The shrimp tostada was my favorite the beef checks were not my favorite but the chicken was fantastic
Beautiful rooftop with Miami-like vibes.
Very chic place and just what SF needed. We walked in and were greeted with big smiles from staff. The lounge and bar is a must to drop in for happy hour, date night drinks, or just with the girls. The crowd for a Friday was diverse and a mix of ages. I was pleasantly surprised and immediately loved that this place was curating a place for all to come eat, drink and mingle. The menu had great options. My favorite was the cod, nigiri pieces, and who can forget the ribeye that was prepared to perfection. We had a minor issue with one of our dishes but the staff went above and beyond and to fix it. Great service and vibes, delicious bites!
Chotto matte stands for "wait a minute" in Japanese.
I actually heard it a couple times during my time in Japan earlier this year. So knew we had to come check this place out. Upon walking in, you'll be in awe with how beautiful the dangling 'Chotto matte' hangs down from the ceiling. You'll take the elevator up to the restaurant and check in from there. This place offers outdoor balcony patio seatings that overlooks the city streets of San Francisco however, a bit too cold during the nights to enjoy it. So we sat inside. I came here one time just to check out the place so me and my friends sat at the bar. They had a live DJ playing music, which was pleasant. The 2nd time I came here to actually tried out the food. The food was not too bad. We did the tasting menu, which is an option to try for the whole table (everyone must do it too). They have a couple different tasting menus and we opted for the most expensive one to get the whole experience. However, the service was extremely slow to receive our food. It was on a Sunday and though it seemed like there were a good group of people there, there were many empty tables as well. We started at 7:15pm and did not end until 10pm, which was pretty long. We were sitting around inbetween some dishes just wondering when we'll get the next dish. We've been to many fine dining restaurants and have done plenty tasting menus before and this was unpleasantly long. Prices were pretty high too so we opt for tasting menu hoping it'll be more worth it. Overall experience was ok, I'd go here for just drinks next time to check out the patio on a night day.

This is an interesting restaurant that has a rooftop bar and outdoor seating. It is beautifully decorated inside and there is an interesting menu. However, the food prices seem to range dramatically, with very few dishes in the $20 range. The other dishes are around $40-50. I ordered the salmon bento box which had sushi, fried rice, and other fish in it. I guess I was a little confused by the menu because I thought the sushi rolls would be vegetarian as stated, but it had fish inside it. The fried rice was fine, though a different take than expected. I think overall this is a nice upscale place with plenty of indoor and outdoor seating and heat lamps. Though I do think the menu could be a little clearer.

I went here in Feb, and absolutely loved the decor, vibe, food, and drinks! Oh, and the whole "Come As You Are" decor in the bathroom hallway was fun to take pics of!
another rooftop bar in SF that is peruvian/japanese fusion.
very similar to kaiyo and cavana except instead of being in mission bay, this is in downtown. theres not much views here since theres so many other high rises blocking. i think kaiyo has the best view of the 3 so if youre paying premium money for the foods and drinks, choose kaiyo. the foods and drinks were good but way overpriced. the best part of the night was walking in the lobby going to the elevator to go up because the ceiling was nicely decorated. overall a mid experience here. wouldnt come back
The food was so, so.
The guacamole was delicious but the chips were awful. The service was slow. When asked for lemon or hot sauce, they often forgot or it was too late. The ribs were dry and not tasty, the miso cod needed to be marinated more, the deep fried squid was mushy and not tasty. The karaage chicken was good. The desserts were so so. Got the dessert platter. Lilikoi crème brûlée was good but not outstanding. All in all, was very disappointed with the service and dinner. Especially for the price. Ambience was amazing!!! Views were great.

Visited Chotto on their first Buena Vibra night and had a blast! The food and drinks were exquisite and the ambiance even better. The servers were extremely attentive and the Latin music set the tone. Will definitely be back!

This is one of the newer SF rooftops and the price point is definitely on the higher end. We came here on a Saturday night with a reso and were seated right away. The service was a little slower than we'd expect and found ourselves flagging down our server several times. However, the food made up for the service; all the fish was fresh and delicious, and the ribeye was juicy! I would be curious about coming back for drinks and appetizers and sitting outside.

Waited 20 minutes to sit (even with reservations), took forever to get our drinks and food (all throughout the night this was an issue), service was slow and the food was just meh. The place is gorgeous, but they need to up their game if they want to stay in business and pay their rent. PS We never got our aioli or water refill. :(
