Very bad value and poor quality
The phrase "they saw us coming" springs to mind. We were having difficulty getting a reservation near our hotel on our first night in Kyoto but were told if we came along immediately they could take us. We assumed this meant they were busy, However on arrival there were no other customers - maybe this should have raised suspicions. Service was satisfactory. However the snails starter were tough and the boar main course extremely fatty! At an eye watering equivalent of £50 per head for this one main course it should have been superb. To be fair we hadn't paid close enough attention to the pricing on the blackboard which was small and faint. All starters and mains were very overpriced and the final insult was being charged almost £20 for a few bits of baguette. We left after the very poor boar main course. We were in shock at the final bill. This was by far the worst value for money in three weeks dining all over Japan. Maybe that is why the restaurant was empty.

After our second attempt to get into Chez Shino we could not have been more delighted. The restaurant is cosy with a maximum of around 12 places including 4 counter spots. The atmosphere adds to the experience with French books and paintings lining the walls, small chandeliers and vintage furniture. This is a 2 person operation with a very warm and welcoming French speaking Mademoiselle ensuring customers are well looked after and Chef Tomoyuki Shinomiya cooking delicious French regional food. The pate was a textured tasty entree. The duck main course was superb with a well balanced jus and a hint of citrus. Although 2 courses were more than sufficient I could not resist the creme brûlée which is the best I've tasted including France.
French wines and cognacs are available by glass, carafe or bottle. It will cost you more than a bowl of ramen but will be a memorable meal and so worth it.
Reservations recommended.
Subway stop Marutamachi exit 5 and turn immediately left and walk about 6 mins. Restaurant on right with name in window.
Real French bistrot
We live in Paris and are on a 2-month tour of Japan. As much as we are enjoying Japanese food, last night we walked by Chez Shino with its handwritten chalkboard menu outside and decided that we were ready for some good French bistrot cooking for a change! We were not disappointed - and in fact we were very impressed. It was amazingly authentic - herrings served with warm potatoes, endive salad, Alsacian choucroute- and absolutely delicious! It could have been the little bistrot around the corner from our Paris apartment! Our Japanese waitress was lovely and spoke very charming French!

We had the good fortune to dine at Chez Shino the fourth day after they opened--an new setting for the chef after 19 years of experience. Quite simply, we couldn’t have been more pleased with the evening. Each dish was exceptionally prepared, built on a sound foundation of ingredients and technique. No shortcuts were taken; minor touches were exact. The range of dishes evinced both experience and ambition (not least for the clients). The portions were particularly generous. We had a starter which included a range of homemade charcuterie, then main courses of roasted lamb and Basque pork, (while passing on the tripe). Wines were amazing--basically a small cave with unique bottles (no wine list), and with every indication that each had been purchased with care (we will long recall an incredible ’97 Bordeaux). On the whole, something of a private kitchen by a perfectionist--French cuisine envisaged intensely. And a word for the service--Shino’s wife was most welcoming, caring for us as though we turned up as old friends. We are a little surprised at writing with such enthusiasm about a French restaurant in in an unlikely corner Kyoto, but sometimes such surprises are the most pleasant parts of travel.
