We went here for a birthday celebration and loved it! It's a very elegant, quaint restaurant. The food was delicious and fresh and our server was really attentive and nice without being intrusive.
Be the first to ReplyThe Michelin guide is out of date.
This remains the best restaurant in Berkeley. The food, service, and ambience is beyond compare.
Be the first to ReplyToo expensive for the food quality.
I made a reservation for my wife and our favorite couple. They reached out ahead of time for any food allergies, to which I responded scallops. Surely they could work around one food allergy. We got there and the appetizer was Scallops. Very disappointed. They accommodated me with grilled endive (not an even trade). Our main course was pigeon and two super small pieces. Not even a free glass of wine for serving scallops. The dessert was amazing. But at this price, everything should be amazing.

Superb food! Their menu changes everyday too FYI :) our group especially liked the root down farm chicken al mattone w/ butternut squash gratin & kale. Everything tastes so fresh, clean and not overpowering. The Pizza de Michele with goat cheese, prosciutto and rosemary is also a hit in our table-- it's a very light pizza, perfect for an appetizer. I wish my mezzi rigatoni with asparagus cream, black pepper, mint & pecorino had protein like chicken on it or something in my opinion. However, the sauce still tasted amazing :) My favorite would have to be the desserts. We ordered all of them-- and when I asked what's the best one, the server said the galette. And it truly was the highlight of our dessert tasting! The pink lady apple-sour cherry galette with vanilla ice cream complemented each other. The chocolate cake (Lindsey's chocolate cake with bourbon caramel) was bomb too. It would have been better if there were more candied pecans to it! :) Overall, 10/10! Would definitely recommend the cafe upstairs. They also have dinner service downstairs for a 4 course set menu ($175 per person).

Alice eaters is a gem and I've been eating here since I was a kid ! The only 5 star place in Berkeley! Love you Alice
Be the first to ReplyI ate here a number of years ago.
I thought the prefix menu was terrible and I would rather order off of a menu and pay a little bit more. I paid nearly $200 for homemade turkey sausage and it was not good. The Disability access is terrible through the kitchen. The service was good but a bit creepy. I have not been back since and do not plan to go back. Sorry, Alice Walker but you just didn't impress me.

Chez Panisse continued its culinary legacy for my mom's 88th bday celebration! With a view of the crackling fire and humming kitchen of perfectly timed creations, the night flew by. Being able to witness the craft in action gave the kids a strong appreciation of their meal... watching the pastry chef mold the most beautiful scalloped pattern in the tarte tatin and then tasting a bite is a moment they won't forget. Each course was wonderful and we all went home savoring the details. From the host to waiters to servers and chefs, the staff could not have been more professional and welcoming.

The food is excellent along with the staff being some of the best train that I've ever seen. I love this restaurant.
Be the first to ReplyThis restaurant is an icon for a good reason.
We ate lunch at the Cafe during the Bioneers Conference and it was delightful. The Cafe is more reasonably priced and we felt that the combination of the delightful meal and the Cafe's pricing were a good value.

I came to Chez Panisse to celebrate my anniversary with my boyfriend. It is a charming restaurant in North Berkeley and I was very excited to eat here because of the hype and rave reviews that I had heard. The interior is elegant and welcoming. We sat downstairs and had a view of the open kitchen which was neat. The menu changes daily and we made a reservation about 3 weeks in advanced. We had the dinner set menu which was $175 per person. The service was good and the servers were kind. When each course is brought out the server tells you about the food and where some of the ingredients are from. As for the food itself, I was disappointed. The food was cooked well but overall none of the dishes were exciting to eat! The best thing that I ate was the bay scallop bite which was a pre-appetizer course. The quail was the entree and the meat itself was moist but the food was barely warm when it arrived to our table which was a huge let down :(( ! The salad had chanterelle mushrooms but I felt that the flavor of the mushroom did not come through because of how much vinaigrette was on the salad. The pasta was perfectly al dente and had a nice eggy taste which I enjoyed. I appreciated their attention to detail and was pleasantly surprised by the happy anniversary decoration on our dessert. Given how expensive this meal was, I don't think it was worth it. The service was not stand out and the food was mediocre at best. The most memorable aspect of my dining experience was the fact that the food was so UN-memorable. I now understand why this restaurant no longer has a Michelin star.
Be the first to ReplyChez P upstairs has really lost its culinary lustre.
The last couple of times we ate there the food and service were not as we had experienced in the past. :-((

Amazing restaurant! We went for my partner's birthday celebration with family that came in from out of the town. Every dish was beautifully presented as well as delicious. Nothing disappointed from appetizers to main course to dessert and drinks. Everything tasted so fresh, true to its farm-to-table motto. And the ambiance of the restaurant was very cozy and thoughtfully decorated. Our server was very nice and had great recommendations about what drinks to pair with what food. Just make sure to get a reservation in advance! They opened up one month before you'd want to go
Be the first to ReplyBack in the 80s I lived on Cedar street just a few blocks
Back in the 80s I lived on Cedar street just a few blocks from Chez Panisse. I never ate there because the reservations were difficult and the costs were way out of my price range. I owned their cookbook and her Pizza and Calazone cookbook but the recipes at the time were out of reach. Luckily, my daughter and son-in-law took me here for my birthday. The Bay Area was the cutting edge for innovative cuisine world wide in the 80s and 90s and Alice Waters' Chez Panisse was the epicenter of innovation. A lot of the iconic restaurants from that era have closed like The Mandarin and Bay Wolf but Chez Panisse has stood the test of time. For that reason alone it is a "must eat here" just from a historical perspective. So here is how it scored from best to worst:Pizza with Sprouting Broccoli $25 - 5/5: the pizza was fabulous. I own a wood fired pizza oven and make a lot of pizza but my pizza can't compare.Apple and Huckleberry Galette $14 - 5/5 best galette everOlives and Anchovies $7 5/5: I eat a lot of olives and these were kind of addicting LOLTagliatelle with Wild Mushrooms $28 - 5/5 the fresh pasta was divine but a little under seasoned Beef Sirloin with Tapenade $40 - 4/5: it was good but not greatLittle Gem and Blood Orange Salad $17 - 4/5: I liked this saladRadicchio, Beets and Shrimp Salad: $19 - 3/5: the flavors didn't work for me, but if you LOVE radicchio and beets, you'll love this saladChicken and Polenta $29 - 2.5/5: it was OK but I couldn't discern any saffron and it was very under seasoned. Honestly, COSTCO sets the standard for roast chicken and all restaurants which serve roast chicken must exceed that standard. Sad but true. The service here is exceptional 5/5. Given the labor shortage and inflation, Chez Panisse has definitely prioritized service over value and quality. It was a mixed bag for sure, but overall it was a fabulous lunch. The venue is very comfortable and not overly pretentious. I would definitely return to eat the pizza, pasta, salad and desert. The entrees for me were pricey for the quality and serving size. Check it out.
Be the first to ReplyThe food was well prepared and tasted delicious.
I had high expectations coming into it so it was hard to overcome. I don't think it was the best meal ever but it was top notch in service and experience. We had a perfectly cooked lamb our night. I would recommend going to this establishment if you're a foodie.
Be the first to ReplyThe food was phenomenal and the service was very pleasant.
My first time finally trying this well-known berkeley landmark was a great experience.

Lived up to its reputation as one of the first farm to table eateries. I was happy made the trip to Berkeley just to go to there.
Be the first to ReplyWhile the upstairs cafe remains beautiful, and the service
While the upstairs cafe remains beautiful, and the service warm and welcoming, we were very disappointed in the quality of our food. Having been to the cafe over 70 times, and having wonderful family memories, we were sad to see that the food was so subpar. Leave this restaurant as a beautiful memory, the food pre-prepared, oversalted, and very dated and clunky. With so many young chefs that are creating such innovative dishes based on Alice's premise, this restaurant needs a full overhaul of the menu, food and presentation.
Be the first to ReplyWell I used to love this place because of Chef Brandell.
Absolutely a inspiration and the teaching garden.

So my kids surprised me and my hubby with dinner at Chez Panisse. I haven't been this excited fir a dining experience in a long time. We had the pre fixe menu with the wine pairing. Everything was delicious and fresh. The wines paired wonderfully. And the service was exceptional. I loved watching the team in the kitchen. Great experience. Enjoy.
Be the first to ReplyVery disappointed.
Ate in the cafe upstairs. We all had high hopes. I was looking forward to dining here for years but it was just meh. Meh flavor, meh service, even the wine was meh. I can cook better than this. Just a big disappointment. Sad really.
Be the first to ReplyA pretentious and delicious culinary experience for those
A pretentious and delicious culinary experience for those who have disposable income. We were granted an opportunity to dine here recently for an occasion, and the reservation was many years (and savings) in the making. It costs more than $450 for 2 people for dinner with taxes and tip. The food was great, per myth and expectations. The menu changes frequently, so you never know what you're going to be served, but we were lucky enough to get a lovely four-course meal. The bread was freshly baked, the butter freshly churned. They served fancy appetizers and gorgeous citrus salads with unique dressing. And we had a homemade mushroom pasta dish that was memorable. Main course was steak served rare with a side of small potatoes. But despite the good food, I'm not sure it's worth the hype. It's impossible to get a reservation, unless you want to dine at 9 PM. You have to book months in advance, and it requires regularly refreshing the web page to get any availability. The experience is high-end, pretentious and exceedingly full of itself. And while food is a wonderful thing, it feels wasteful bordering on obnoxious to spend so much money on a meal when so many people and Berkeley and Oakland are surviving on so little. Real talk.
Be the first to ReplyProbably the best restaurant in California.
Among the best in the world. Alice Waters changed restaurants forever with farm-fresh ingredients decades before anyone else. I would recommend the cafe, where unlike the $$$ downstairs (that also requires a large party and a year-in-advance wait) unless you want to see celebrities (I don't). There is a fixed menu downstairs so if you have allergies or are Vegan or Vegetarian, again go to the Cafe. And even with the cafe, reservations are needed unless you want to have drinks at the lovely waiting restaurant/bar (Cesar's). You also might want to order appetizers at Cesar's as it may be a long wait and their food is also stellar. Waters revolutionized cooking. If you can't get there, buy her books, including the kids one (Fanny after Water's daughter), which has amazing but simple recipes. Also Art of Simple Food, and two or three others.
Be the first to ReplyThis review is for their downstairs, set course menu
This review is for their downstairs, set course menu restaurant. As a destitute undergraduate during my time at UC Berkeley, I'd heard of fantastical stories of this bougie little restaurant located in Gourmet Ghetto that had a set menu and outrageous prices headed by the famous Alice Waters. As I grew older, matured, and discovered a more meaningful passion for good and inspirational food (and a fatter wallet), I learned the cultural importance of this place. From reading about it in books to seeing it referenced in travel and food guides/documentaries, I can't believe I never realized that a lot of the food I ate in California can be traced back to Chez Panisse. My friends and I finally decided to take the plunge and were able to make reservations for the downstairs restaurant. The service was incredibly excellent and friendly - it was pretty funny seeing their reactions to when we brought our own bottle of Snoop Dogg labeled wine. The food was outstanding and I totally get the concept of farm to table now with the stars of the show being the vegetables. Their menu changes daily, so don't expect to see the same items. We had:* Fried Monterey Bay squid with tomato and cucumber salad and coriander flowers - 10/10: the tomatoes were out of this world* Wild greens risotto with Manila clams and bacon lardons - 9/10: the lardons in combination with the risotto tasted outstandingly fresh and savory* Elliott Ranch leg of lamb à la fiçelle with herb salsa, eggplant tian, shoestring potatoes, and watercress - 9/10: the lamb was perfectly cooked like prime rib with the sauce being the focal point of this dish* Ras el hanout crème caramel with peaches and raspberries - 5/10: quite underwhelming, just your typical flan* Artisan cheese - 7/10: just a couple of cheeses with almonds and breadAs a bonus, our waiter overheard us talking about how cool the kitchen is and he gave us a tour of the back which was super interesting. Definitely an experience of a lifetime, with a meal that traces its lineage back to the formation of California cuisine. Some helpful tips:* the cheese plate is $25 total additional, not per person* $35 corkage fee, $55 magnum fee (highly recommended)* expect to be here for 2-3 hours minimum* don't fill up on the bread too quickly at the beginning

The upstairs Cafe experience was wonderful for a special birthday dinner. The dining room is beautiful and classic. The service was considerate, professional, well-informed, and attentive, befitting one of the Bay Area's great restaurants. I would say the food I had wasn't up to the level of the last time I went there a few years ago. I ordered the lamb, which frankly was over-cooked. The portion for the lamb and side dishes on the plate was a little small; maybe I was just hungry, but I think a chunk or two more meat and more of the other elements would have been appropriate. In fact, appetizers and my dessert (custard) were also just at the acceptable amount of food and no more. The wine I ordered by the glass was excellent. So, it was a terrific experience, but I'm not sure the meal itself will have me racing back. It was outstanding a few years ago; maybe I just had some bad luck and it'll be better next time. I still love the place.
