Tl;dr: 4 stars for food, 1 star for everything else.

2/5 by 👻 @Kendra M. on 07/19/2024

Food was good but prices were INSANE - over $100 for a cup of soup. We were charged for an appetizer they just gave us that we didn't order, and we were literally charged for using our napkins!! Not joking. Restaurant was dusty and looked like a storeroom. Room was decorated with wine bottles but they don't serve wine. I would recommend against Chef Kang's and I have absolutely no idea how they have a Michelin star. Full review: I have been to 13 Michelin star restaurants. To think of Chef Kang's in the same realm as the other 12 is preposterous and honestly offensive to the other 12. We went for the first seating at 6 pm on a Thursday. We had our hotel concierge make us a reservation because they only accept them over phone, and only have 3 private tables in the whole place. When we walked in, the chef himself was sitting by the front door. We were led to one of the 3 private rooms. Noticed it was very lacking in decor - cardboard storage boxes all around, a wall of dusty wine bottles, minimal place setting. The place setting was a plate, a bowl, chopsticks, a teacup, and a wrapped single wetnap. No worries - this must be a place where the food speaks for itself, right?? When we sat, server asked if we preferred Chinese or chrysanthemum tea. The chrysanthemum tea was very good! We then tried to order wine - the room we were in had like 50 bottles lining the walls, but apparently, they do not serve drinks. Well, except one random bottle of Pinot Noir that she pulled from a mini fridge in the corner and said we could have it if we wanted (we didn't). She gave us recommendations from the menu, but we were surprised to see that most things require you to order days ahead. Since they do not have their menu online, we had no idea and started to feel a little irked that no one told us. Chalked it up to the concierge making the res and not us, although the confirmation and reminder emails didn't mention it either. Other standout from the menu was the prices - a cup of soup ranged from $38 to $298. Signature dishes and noodles were around $30-$70 and Delicacies went as high as $18,888. Sadly, we could not justify the price of several recommended items. Before we ordered, the server set down a bowl of pickled beans of some kind. We didn't order it - just assumed it was the amuse-bouche or equivalent of free bread. They were good! We then ordered the braised bean curd with dried scallops, pork ribs, chicken, and stir fry wide rice noodles. Bean Curd - this is a signature dish and mentioned by the Michelin guide. It was basically very soft tofu with sauce and broccoli. It was the most unique dish we had and pretty good! I liked the sauce a lot. But we couldn't finish it due to the texture - would have been nice with some rice. Pork Ribs - fried bone-in bites with a red sweet chili type sauce. Also pretty good. Chicken - stir fried with onions and whole sichuans and served with crispy greens. This was my favorite of the night! Really liked the whole sichuans. Wide noodles - sadly, these came with more egg than noodles. Egg was not listed as an ingredient on the menu, and neither of us eat egg. We picked through it and the noodles themselves were fine, but nothing you can't find at any Thai place in the US. I'll blame myself on that one - probably should have assumed fried noodles have egg like fried rice does. Overall the food was good - we said it was a little better than our favorite Chinese restaurants at home. But absolutely not worth the price. We were already both confused on the experience but neither of us had voiced it yet - really trying to stay positive and enjoy a Michelin star dinner. But my husband burst out laughing in disbelief when we got the check. In addition to the food we ordered, we were charged for: "Snacks" - $8. For the bean starter that we were just given without ordering. Tea - $10 ($5 for each pot). Again, we did not order this and we were just given it. We drank a lot because the restaurant did not offer water or drinks, so it was the only drink we got. Wet Tissue - $1 (.50 each). A charge for using the wetnaps that were provided at our place setting!!!!!! When we were not given cloth or paper napkins or anything else to use!!!! I know that's not expensive but still, this is without a doubt the most insane charge I've ever received at a restaurant. Idk. I saw so many reviews where guests were greeted and served by the chef himself, and wine was flowing, and they had the best food of their life. Then there are just as many others like mine - weird experiences, good but not great food. We tried SO HARD to like this restaurant, because it seems insane to dislike a place with a Michelin star. If I have friends coming to Singapore, I would actively recommend against Chef Kang's. So many better Michelin star options - or, save yourself the money and go to one of the many amazing Hawker Centers.

Never again

Nothing was tasty. Very disappointed. The pictures on the website were not real. Tea was tasteless. The recommended dish combination was not professional. Soup after soup. Food presentation to be improved. The dining room did provide privacy but looks like someone's messy basement.

Strand of hair found in dish

3/5 by 👻 @198traveltheworld on 12/08/2023

Some dishes are nice but some are just so so. We ordered a beehoon lard as main. The waitress portion it out and I found a strain of hair in the beehoon while halfway eating it. Stop and tell the waitress. She didn't apologise and just orh. Quickly took the bowl away and gone. Evidence gone. No apologies given, nothing. We also did not want to rub it further but at least an apology. So what if Michelin star...

Old school delicious experience.

5/5 by 👻 @Paul T on 03/19/2023

I’ve not heard of this place until a friend suggested it to celebrate another friend’s birthday. The decor is a bit dated and kitschy but the food is yummy and delish even though it doesn’t look very pretty 😂. Everything we had was pretty amazing. I believe there’s only 3 private dining rooms so the service was attentive and friendly. Chef Kang even popped in to say hello!!

Each posting on AppointmentTrader shows you which user submitted it and along with that provides a trackrecord of that user which indicates how much experience the user has and how many percent of their transactions resulted in them issuing a refund.

If there is no user posting that fits your schedule, you can bid on your preferred time.

Let's say Peter has a great morning and decides to take his three friends to Chef Kang's Singapore at 6 PM the same day.

He checks the restaurant's website and sees that no reservations are available. He then looks at the Chef Kang's Singapore page on AppointmentTrader, but finds that there are no user postings either.

That's where the community-driven bid process comes in.

Peter can place a bid on AppointmentTrader, which serves as a reward for any community member who chooses to work on securing the reservation. AT then notifies experienced users who may be able to help.

Step-by-Step Process
1.) Setting a Reward (Bid)
* AppointmentTrader uses historical data to recommend a reasonable reward amount for securing a reservation - let's say $100.
* Peter really wants to go, so he increases the bid (or reward) to $200.
* At this stage, the reservation does not exist yet.

2.) A Community User Picks Up the Bid
* FluffyStar64, an experienced AT user, has a strong track record of successfully securing reservations and low refund requests, they receive a notification about Peter's bid.
* FluffyStar64 picks up the bid, meaning they will now work on securing the reservation.
* Peter can now talk to FluffyStar64 for any questions Peter may have as FluffyStar64 user fills the bid.

3.) Finding the Reservation
* FluffyStar64 now uses their connections at Chef Kang's Singapore to secure the table.
* If they successfully get the 6 PM table for four, Peter receives a confirmation that the reservation has been secured.
* If FluffyStar64 fails to secure the reservation, the bid is returned to the pool so another user can try.

4.) Payment & Protection
* Once the reservation is secured, FluffyStar64 receives the $200 reward which is credited to FluffyStar64's AT balance, where users manage their own funds and can withdraw via available payout options such as bank transfer, PayPal, or Zelle.
* Peter can now enjoy the dinner with his friends at Chef Kang's Singapore!
* As with all transactions on AT, disputes and no-show fees are handled through the platform's community-driven resolution system. Users with a strong track record are incentivized to fulfill bids successfully, and community members can report issues to maintain trust in the marketplace.
