Charlie Gitto's On the Hill St. Louis Reviews from The Last Year
Wow, what a great place! I got the recommendation from a
Wow, what a great place! I got the recommendation from a friend when I was in St Louis. Called the restaurant short notice and asked for reservations for 10. After some checking they told me that they could make accommodations. We left and were there in 30 minutes. Everyone loved the food, the staff, the host, and our server were great. I had the Veal Porterhouse, Caprese Salad and bread and potato croquettes It was delicious. Cannot say enough about this food. All the helpings were large and the price was very affordable.
The food was awful.
I'm extremely disappointed... Was the first time there. Everything was soooo sweet. The sauce for the calamari, the red sauce for everything. The waiter didn't listen to us. He brought me the wrong order. To take the cake, the waiter forgot we were the 30-year anniversary table he gave the couple in front of us, the anniversary piece of cake. A lot of unwanted food....
Superb service and food.
Excellent ambience. Thoroughly enjoyed our evening. Will definitely return.
I'm so glad I tried this STL staple.
The food, drinks and ambiance were phenomenal. Our server Abby was delightful and attentive. The toasted ravioli were tender and delicious, the pasta was cooked to perfection and well seasoned. It's the most satisfying meal I've had in a long time. I can't wait to go back.
The Hill is my favorite place to dine, I absolutely love
The Hill is my favorite place to dine, I absolutely love Italian cuisine. Charlie Gitto's is top tier for their exquisite food and dinner experience. The service is here is beyond expectation. It's romantic and dimly lit for an intimate dining experience. It's truly a beautiful place to be and enjoy.

The restaurant was rather dark when you enter which gave it a lovely ambiance. We were told that we could sit at the bar since we did not have a reservation. I ordered a lovey Cosmo which was delicious. My dinner was Veal that was outstanding and plenty of it. Unfortunately I also ordered the Brussel sprouts which were not good. I sent them back once since they were not hot enough. Actually they did not taste any better when it came back hotter. The Brussel sprouts needed to be cooked more. I told both waiters behind the bar that they should be taken off the menu. I thought they would take it off my bill. But that did not happen. So overall the wait staff was good the gentleman at the front desk were fantastic as they let me charge up my phone that was almost out of battery.

6-30-2024 dinner for 2 5:00PM Ambiance - Top Notch, romantic low lights, beautiful dinning area. Parking - on. Street parking PLUS "2" private lots. Food: Classic Caesar Salad - Large Full flavored and delicious. Seafood pasta "Suzanne" - Delicious and very rich. The focus of this section was lots of seafood. The pasta and seafood sauce excellent. But the seafood was sparse. Pizza - margarita. Beautiful and delicious. The crust unique and best ever tasted. Hot Green Tea - Delicious Staff - Very polite and helpful. Server - Steven. Very efficient, helpful, & attentive. Iced Tea
You can't find a better lasagna anywhere else in St.
Louis. Same goes for the toasted ravioli. Atmosphere is great and the staff couldn't be friendlier. You can always rely on a good experience at Charlie Gitto's.
I have been a fan of Charlie Gitto's for several years.
However, the last few times have been disappointing. Last night the meal was $320 for four people, including two kids, and it was subpar. My limoncello spritzer was watered down, and when I asked for it to be replaced, the server brought me a straw and said that it would taste better. The desserts were amazing. The food was overpriced and bland. I am sorry to see the decline.

Truly one of the best meals I've had all year! We had a game plan going in and it was thrown out once we heard the specials. Tim, our server, provided amazing recommendations and was very attentive. The room was perfect for an intimate dining room on The Hill. This is a little nicer than other Hill restaurants, so plan your clothing not to show up in shorts and a T shirt. Started with cocktails, a Negroni and Sicilian Manhattan. This is the origins of the toasted ravioli, so we couldn't pass them up. Topped it off with a steak, lobster spaghetti and truly amazing sea bass. Skipped desserts because we were so satiated.
Italian on the Hill
From excellent service to impressive food preparation; dinner at Charlie’s was such an enjoyable experience. Joe, the cute manager, and staff are very knowledgeable, and welcoming. My wife and I had such a good evening, and look forward to returning to the Hill
Worth a visit
The service was impeccable - truly one of the best I’ve experienced. We had the toasted ravioli as an appetizer, and lasagna and veal nunzio for our entrees. They were all good, but not as good as I had expected. Maybe my expectations were too high from all of the excellent reviews. I also had a side of angel hair pasta. The pasta is made in-house and it was excellent.

Talitha took care of our table -- she made great recommendations, and was perfectly charming and hospitable throughout our dining experience. She was knowledgeable about the wine & food menu, a true standout in our dining tour of St Louis. We will be back, but only if Talitha is working!!! Food was also amazing, btw-- what a great experience!

Let me just say, the ambiance is amazing! it is a lovely establishment with ample space indoors and out. I was brought here to have a small, intimate birthday dinner with my most immediate family and it was a perfect choice! Additionally, the other guest were so kind and sweet. Upon learning it was my birthday, they bought us and everyone around us Lemoncello shots, which were delightful! The cocktails were very well crafted. Our food was absolutely delicious and the portions were large enough for all of us to have a second meal of our respective selections. If/when they have risotto, GET IT! I had it with the Chilean Seabass, and it was seasoned to perfection and cooked perfectly. I also was bequeathed a complementary generous slice of a deliciously moist and flavorful cake for my birthday! Like, how awesome is that?! The ultimate highlight of the entire evening was the waitstaff. Our main waitress was absolutely incredible, and the others who gave service to us were the right level of attentive. I feel like our waitress and I are literally besties now and I'm her daughter's (who also works here!) Auntie (this may be the shots talking though; we judtI can go on and on and on about how excellent this place was, and I am so happy my brother chose this lovely place for the occasion! Highly recommend!
Last night we took our 2 teens for a special dinner.
It was our first time there and I will say it did not live up to its reputation. We are used to fine dining. While the atmosphere was dim, old school-what you expect from an old Italian restaurant on the Hill it had a smell. It smelled like vomit in that back dining area which we mentioned to the waiter. He said it's an "old building". I know what an old building smells like- I'm pretty sure someone got sick on that carpet. Maybe the carpet should be removed from the dining room? Anyway, food was pretty great though my son said the red sauce was a little sweet on his lasagna. My husband ordered a Sicialian manhattan which was listed as one price, $14, on the menu but the bill reflected a few upcharges including $1 extra for a Luxardo cherry to equal $17.50 for that one drink. At a fine dining restaurant the price should be listed and fancy cherries included. Don't nickel and dime people. Tiramisu, lobster ravioli we great. Service was not what I would expect as some empty glassware sat on the table the entire time. Not sure it we will return as we like other places on the Hill much better. We anticipated this to be a nicer, fancier experience than it was.
Surprisingly good.
We got the Arancini rice balls - delicious, the Lobster pasta and the Nunzio Chicken. I highly recommend!
Not kid friendly.
They do not have high chairs. I put a request for a high chair in my reservation. It wasn't until we showed up with our children that they told us they have no high chairs. They should have addressed that when reviewing my reservation and calling for a confirmation. Any restaurant that does not allow children is appalling. We have traveled everywhere with our kids. They eat out with us frequently, and it's very rare to find a place without high chairs. We went to Guidos down the street and had a wonderful meal.
Tried this place after all the great reviews on here and
Tried this place after all the great reviews on here and because they were about the only one open on a Sunday. The ambiance was dimly lit, but fancy seating. Our service was slow at first, but friendly for the whole visit and tried to get us to try a few things. I decided to try the lasagna after seeing the reviews of how good it was and a lot of food. Boy was I disappointed. Maybe I eat more than most, but I had this lasagna down in about 8 bites and was still hungry...and it was $25. Nothing about this lasagna said authentic homemade Italian and it is not worth $25. Thank goodness for the table bread I was able to eat and feel a little more full. Maybe there is a more fulfilling dish on the menu, but if you can eat, don't settle for this.
More than an Italian restaurant! The steaks and seafood are the best in the city. This place should be listed as such.
Fabulous Italian but their steaks and seafood is the best in the city. Should be categorized as a steakhouse and seafood restaurant as well. I’ve been visiting this establishment since the 80s and have never had a negative experience.
Not as good as it used to be.
I am from out of state, and I always look forward to eating at Charlie Gitto’s On The Hill when I am in STL. I have probably eaten there at least ten times in the past 15 years. When I ate there about a year ago, I remember commenting that it was not as good as it used to be, and my experience there last night did not anywhere near live up to the enjoyment that I have had in my earlier visits. Our reservation was for 8 PM, and we probably showed up about five minutes early. We were shown to a table, and our waitress came and asked about our preference for water. I ordered San Pellegrino, and she asked if we wanted glasses with ice. I said no. Almost 15 minutes later she comes back with two bottles of San Pellegrino but no glasses. I specified then that we did want glasses, just not with ice. We ordered a bottle of white wine, and when she brought that to the table, we ordered calamari for an appetizer, and said that we would like to take our meal one step at a time. She informed us that the kitchen closed at nine, but they like to have all the orders in by 8:45. By this time it was already 8:20. After she left, we realized that the white wine was barely chilled at all, almost warm. If I had been there alone, I probably would not have said anything about the temperature of the wine, because I do not like to cause conflict. My dining companion brought it to the waitress’ attention, and she sent over the maitre d’. He took away the the bottle and our glasses of almost warm wine and brought us a new, much cooler bottle. By this time, the calamari had arrived at our table. Their citrus aïoli was delicious as usual, but the calamari and the other fried bits that came with it were disappointing. The calamari itself was big tough strips of something, and the other components, like green beans that still had stems and chunks of raw onion, were not overly appetizing. And the breading was falling off of most of it. In my earlier visits, the calamari was a delicious pile of delicately fried rings and tentacles of squid. We then ordered a pasta Fiore Borghese to split and a Veal Marsala. The waitress said she would hold off on putting in the order for the Veal Marsala as long as possible. After a couple of minutes, the pasta showed up, and it was quite tasty. About five minutes after the pasta arrived to the table, while we were still eating it, the veal marsala arrived. The person who dropped off the plate warned us that the plate was hot, which it was, but then as we ate the veal, we realized it was barely warm. It was also floury, like it had been sautéed in a pan that was not hot enough, and the sauce had no hint of marsala but tasted like just a veal demi glace with a few mushroom slices. Alongside the three pieces of cutlet and the sauce, was one stalk of broccolini that was still raw, one strip of carrot, a chunk of mushy tomato, and a piece of roasted onion. For $39, the plate was disappointing. We finished the meal with a glass of port and a tiramisu, which were fine. When we got the bill, there had been no discount or adjustment for the warm wine. When we were finally leaving about 9:20, as we walked through the main dining room, we noticed that there were two or three tables of guests still early on in eating their main courses, which had to have been sent out from the kitchen after the 9pm deadline, and much later than our mediocre veal marsala. Overall, it seems that the restaurant is getting a bit sloppy both in service and in food, resting on its fine reputation from years past. Hopefully it will not continue to slide.
YES!!
We wound up here by chance. We knew we wanted to experience The Hill. The first restaurant we called was unable to accommodate our party of 6 that evening. This restaurant just happened to be open when we needed to call and make a reservation. I was surprised by how large and well run and organized it was. My college aged grandson had heard wonderful things about it and was thrilled about eating there. It is clearly a very popular place because it seemed to be filled to capacity on a Thursday night. We all loved our respective meals. One member of our party is gluten free. This was not a problem there. The wait staff was alert and attentive. I definitely want to experience another Charlie Gitto meal when we return to St Louis in two years.
Wonderful meal
The restaurant has a cozy, neighborhood feel. The service was excellent; not only did Andrew do a wonderful job taking care of everything, but several other people brought us things and kept our table clean. We started with the delicious toasted ravioli, and then I had pasta Borghese (with chicken instead of prosciutto) and my husband had the spicy seafood pasta. Both pastas were homemade and both sauces were delicious, and my husband said the seafood was all cooked perfectly. Andrew recommended a great champagne for us to celebrate our anniversary, perfectly matching what we said we liked. For dessert we had cannolis and crème brûlée, and both were delicious. It was a wonderful meal.
Nailed it.
Great food, great atmosphere, great service! Had the lasagna and Cesar salad and it was fantastic. The lasagna felt authentic, with six layers of goodness. My colleagues all had something different and each was thrilled with their meal too. The ambiance of this place was old school, dark, wooden architecture and cozy. You know the vibe. We sat outside on their patio and it was strung with lights, and had heaters. Service was great, from the maitre de, to the bar tender, to the server and the kid offering me Fresh cracked pepper and parm. Five stars Charlie G’s - well done!
Old School Italian
It is much much larger inside than it appears, although the bar is very small. We went on a Friday night without reservations. They said we could wait at the bar until a table was ready. After we were seated at the bar, one of the hosts asked if he could take our coats, when we declined he said they don't allow coats on the backs of the bar chairs since it's crowded, so he checked out coats for us. The bartenders were slammed, but were able to take our order of a calamari appetizer. They also made us mocktails, but didn't have a menu for them and both were different. Afyer.maybe 45 minutes our table was ready. Since it was busy it took a while to close out our bar tab as the host stood there waiting for us. We were lead to the back, to the right, through another waiting area with restrooms, to a large dining room with vaulted ceilings. The restaurant interior is very pretty, but because it was packed, it was terribly loud. When I say the writer was yelling the specials at the table next to us, I mean yelling, and somehow it wasn't the loudest noise in the room. Our waiter was very rushed and I was worried he wouldn't take my food allergy (alphagal) seriously. But the kitchen was able to make their pasta Suzanne with a plain tomato sauce to make it safe for me. They also provided me with olive oil and pepper for my bread. It did take a reminder or two for creamer and pepper, but it was peak dining time. The food was delicious. The portion was generous, although it was a bit light on the seafood, compared to other similar Italoan restaurants. Overall it was an upscale, traditional, Italian restaurant, which made for a nice evening. Bring cash for the coat check, and ask for a quiet table.if you want to have conversation without yelling.
Fantastic Date Night Dinner
Definitely our fave restaurant on The Hill. The Veal Osso Buco rocked!! The Tiramisu is to die for!! A shout out to our server Talitha. She made the evening feel so special.
CG was on the list of where to eat in St Louis
On our way to KC from Atl. Have heard great things about CG. Food was very good and the service was excellent, provided by Erica. She was professional and friendly. Kudos to Erica for your wonderful manner
Great place
Not many options on "the hill" on Monday nights. Glad we ended up at Charlie Gitto's. Very good! Got our party seated early which is always nice. My next trip to STL will include a trip back to Charlie Gitto's.
An Overly Crowded Dining Experience
We came here on a Friday night with family to celebrate a birthday. What a mistake! You can barely get into the receiving area & if your party hasn't all arrived you are directed to the full bar where you can dodge the wait staff. When we were seated they placed our party of 5 at a table for 4 which seemed uncomfortable and a poor excuse after a long held reservation. The sole function for the host/hostess seems to crowd as many diners in as possible! Otherwise all the food was good and the wait staff was excellent. but the overall experience will lead us to try another place if we go to the Hill on the weekend.
Thank you Charlie Gitto's!
Charlie Gitto's to the rescue! I traveled to St Louis with a kiddo and her mom who have had a very tough year medically. After a ong hospital day, we were looking forward to a casual meal at an Italian place on the Hill that a friend had recommended only to be turned away because they aren't handicap accessible. We were all very disappointed to say the least... I looked quickly for an alternative and found Charlie Gitto's, called them up, and they made us feel like honored guests! We arrived in our jeans and sneakers, feeling tired and burdened. They made special "fancy" lemonade for our kiddo and went above and beyond with their attention and service. The food was wonderfully thought out and prepared; the ambiance was refined but relaxed and comforting. They turned the whole day around! This is the power and magic of wonderful service and a quality meal: to recognize someone's dignity and to value and honor them. We left feeling happy, relaxed, treated and very well fed! From now on, I will tell everyone about this special treasure of a restaurant in St.Louis! Thank you to the chef and entire staff of Charlie Gitto's on the Hill!
A Delicious Memorable Meal
Taking my 88 yr young Mother for early Saturday dinner, with very little notice. Patrick graciously accommodated us, seating us as soon as we arrived in a very convenient setting. Orion (sp) was our server. He was excellent. The Shrimp Special appetizer was delicious with GIANT prawns perfectly prepared in a garlic butter sauce. We had the Veal Chop Parmigiana which was outstanding. I ordered the tortellini with guanciale and peas in a cream sauce-so good! Thank you Charlie Gitto’s for making a special, memorable meal for Mom and I…Bravo!

Great Service - amazing dinner!!
Read about the site in NYT and bought a reservation at Mother Wolf in LA 2 days later. Worked great and the food was amazing!!!
Worked perfectly!
Got the reservation (that I couldn't get anywhere else) and was able to entertain a group of friends at the infamous Bern's Steakhouse.
Got into Nobu Malibu
Wonderful! My parents are visiting and we have wanted to go to Nobu Malibu for years. I tried getting a reservation myself but it was next to impossible. So glad I was able to buy a reservation on appointment trader for a decent price!
Very easy
Was very hesitant going into this experience but am glad to say that it worked out very well ! will definitely use appointment trader in the future
Fabulous Lunch
I was veeeeeerry skeptical that this would work, particularly at a restaurant as hard to get into as Nobu Malibu, and it was perfect! We had lunch outside on the patio and it was fabulous!
Great reviewer team
Just wanted to take a second to shout out the reviewer team. Even though they probably review hundreds of listings and bids a day, they still take the time to leave great comments and respond relatively quickly. Thanks!
Incredible
I got a reservation to Don Angie, which I've been trying to book for weeks! I am very happy with this service.
Best platform out there!
Super simple, easy, and fast to secure reservations for hard-to-get restaurants and locations!
This app is life changing
This app has opened my world up to so many wonderful new experiences I would never have the chance to have without access to this awesome app! 10/10!
Worked perfectly
Was a little nervous at first but was pleased to see that the booking went through flawlessly.
Highly recommended.
Success on Short Notice
Was able to snag an indoor table at Don Angie through an absolutely seamless worry-free process.

Worked well, got me into a restaurant with no availability
I was skeptical, and I still don't really know how they managed to find this hard-to-find reservation, but it was a win-win from my point of view, and I'll use this service again.
Last minute reservation for Delilah Las Vegas
Got a last minute reservation, dinner for 2 at Delilah Las Vegas: super impressed! The process was simple, transaction seamless. We had an amazing time! Couldn’t be happier! 😍
It works!
Ok at this point I've attended a reservation purchased on AT by a friend and sold a reservation personally. Both worked pretty smoothly, nothing sketchy about it. A few areas for improvement including a way to more directly communicate between buyers and sellers, but the app always seems to be in development. AT customer support is really(!) responsive and helpful too if you have questions!
Money transfer
As a seller, I like the fact i have the ability now to transfer money out of my AT account and into a bank account. Makes getting the money much easier then the process before.
Love this app
Got to go to places otherwise unreachable
Easy Access
Very easy to get into one of the hardest restaurants to reserve in New York.
Whose name will my reservation be under when I arrive at the venue?
It can be under your name or a name you choose! Some reservation offers already include the AppointmentTrader Transfer Service which will transfer the reservation in to your name. If its not included you can add it on after buying the reservation for a small fee. One thing on that though: As many reservations become available at last minute, taking a reservation in someone else name is quick and great for privacy. Most reservations on AT are listed with a virtual phone number, so all you need to do is present the phone number at the hostess stand and you are good to go!
Payouts Blocked Because of Sell Through Rate
Does anyone know how AT plans to handle cases where a seller is quitting the platform but has a sell through rate <25%? The error message I got said to fill more bids or find other ways to increase the rate.
Is AT really going to block sellers from withdrawing their money? Especially revenue made before the sell through rate was introduced??

I will give you 50% of ALL of my PROFITS if you teach me how to make profits?
LOL. Thank you The New Yorker.

Transferring reservations is not supported in AT. Why not just use the name in the AT screenshot?
Buyers interested in Bern's Steakhouse: PLEASE READ
Same goes for 4 Charles and I Sodi
Prepaid Reservation Fee
Agreed. Ultimately not addressing this month after month is clearly resulting in a drop in certain venue’s rankings & sales.
Congrats on 3 mil

Need to cancel a bid, not getting a response… how do I do it?
Click on "Take off the Market Option" in your portfolio
Working on your bid?
Your bid has been “matched” with a reservation. From the time a reservation has been located, the seller of the reservation must connect with moderator to give transfer information for reservation. If the seller;however, does NOT respond to reservation transfer, then your bid is reprocessed and returns to the first step, which is connecting your request to a reservation.
Process after bid is accepted.
Hey @EvocativeFold67, welcome to appointmenttrader! Once the reservation is in your portfolio, you definitely own the timeslot, the review team would not have approved the trade if the reservation wasn't confirmed - so you are going :-) Judging from your post you bid today and are going tomorrow - don't worry as long as you initiated the name transfer, you are good - the transfer service has to work with the opening hours of the reservation team of the respective venue. You will likely see the transfer confirmation a couple hours before your reservation time.
Where do the Reservations on AppointmentTrader come from?
Mostly from people who don't need their reservations or appointments any longer. AT has no relationship with places listed and acts as a platform connecting buyers and sellers making sure that listed reservations are real and that privacy is not compromised when transacting.
What happens if my bid expires unanswered?
Hey @FluffyStar64, thanks for the question! When you place your bid the amount gets transferred in a deposit account, the second you either cancel your bid or a few minutes after the bid expires the funds are moved back into your main account from where you can refund it to your payment method or use for other transactions.
