Heaven in Italian countryside
If you're looking for the perfect coutryside getaway in Emilie-Romagna then don't go anywhere else. Unforgettable experience from all angles, from the amazing breakfast, astounding dinner experience with Jessica's brigade (Osteria Francescana style) and more than cozy art-driven country house rooms. Will go again in the future without any hesitation. Kudos to all the team you deserve it!
Be the first to ReplyDelightful and unique property; owners are very hospitable.
We loved our stay here. The staff are so helpful, the breakfast is excellent, and the owners are truly hospitable. This is a unique experience and while expensive, worth every cent. The parking is convenient self-parking and the grounds are great for a walk. The self-serve pantry and liqueurs are such a nice thing to do. The construction was excellent. We never heard any other guests' telephone calls or TVs, or making any noise. Excellent relaxation -- we slept very well.
Be the first to ReplyJust 5 stars isn’t enough
Just 5 stars isn’t enough! I know this sounds like an exaggeration but the whole experience at Casa Maria Luigia deserves its own category. The food, the rooms, the location, the amenities, the friendly staff, everything was beyond perfect. Chef Massimo set out to make this an unique experience where you feel like you’re ‘at home’ and achieved it how. The inclusive mini bar, communal kitchen and access to every corner of the property makes you wish this truly was your home. My absolute fav part was the breakfast that was inspired but Chef’s grandma’s Christmas breakfast- I think about that meal everyday since! This isn’t your everyday luxury property or a boutique hotel, it’s an experience like none other!
Be the first to ReplyA perfect and unique stay in Emiglia Romagna
This place is amazing! Located just outside of Modena in a perfectly restored old farm turned into a most modern and comfortable dwelling, it goes by one very unique and special philosophy : the owner Massimo Botturo, a Michelin star chef, wants you to feel at home , literally! Our room was actually a very spacious suite of modern design and with interesting artwork from the collection of the owner. The refrigerator, which other hotels would call mini bar and would charge you for every tiny item including water, was in fact like your own fridge with all kinds of drinks and snacks , which were replenished every day. Moreover, there was a communal kitchen, where you could get cheeses, desserts, fruit every day at any time. There was also a music room with a good selection of discs and a “meditation room” with a selection of drinks. The bed was about 50% wider than a regular king size bed!! And all the bed linens , covers and the pillows were super comfortable. I don’t have enough talent to describe the meals there: Everything starting with breakfasts and ending with a huge multi course dinner (which the chef is always present at, giving comments on every single course) was completely out of ordinary in so many respects , including artistic! The property has a recreation area with a beautiful pool and gym and also a mini museum housing the owner’s collection of cars and art. Thank you signor Botturo and of course, signora Botturo for your hospitality and thoughtfulness! We really felt at home.

Great for everything especially the special breakfast. The whole property is like one private manor with anything which you need to stay and it is the best place to have rest, moreover everyone there is friendly whatever he or she is a stuff or guest.
Be the first to ReplyIncredibly generous hospitality
Our taxi brought us here by mistake, which we only realised once the staff could not find our reservation. Alessandro and his colleagues were incredibly kind and offered us a drink and a tour of the premises before calling us a taxi to take us to the correct hotel. We are very grateful for their hospitality and will absolutely stay here the next time we are in Modena.

Perfect stay at Casa Maria Luigia. Our 3 bedroom villa was wonderful. Wish we could have stayed longer and enjoy all the great features of the property. Service and staff was very attentive. Breakfast was great!
Be the first to ReplyA true stay in Massimo’s country home
We stayed at Casa Maria Luigi at the end of February. I traveled with my sister and 2 adult daughters to Modena. The rooms were beautifully decorated and came equipped with a mini bar filled with waters, Pellegrino and Lambrusco. The rooms were a good size. We were in 5 and 7. Room 7 was on a floor above us and was larger with more sitting space . The bed and linens were exceptionally comfortable. They tell you in the communal kitchen, it is as if you are “raiding” Massimo’s refrigerator. This was actually better than I could expect . Everyday a different beautiful dessert was on display to be enjoyed with a beautiful coffee served in an exquisite China cup. The refrigerator had cheese topped with herbs or balsamic vinegar under small individual cloches. And at times homemade crackers. And more Lambrusco than you could imagine ! The managers at CML were incredibly helpful . Alessandro made us reservations, helped with luggage, offered umbrellas, etc. Then there is breakfast…. A beautiful sort of buffet with a sample of regional foods . And perhaps the best cappuccino ever. Eduardo was amazing and after 1 day knew our coffee and food favorites. His wife did our tour of the balsamic vinegar room and she was incredibly knowledgeable and kind. It was winter, and yet still so beautiful, with spring flowers starting to emerge. We also ate at the Osteria Francescana, which was an amazing culinary experience. The sommelier, Giovanni was so very good to us too! We were lucky enough to meet Massimo too. It was my birthday and an Italian man stood up and sang me Happy Birthday ! A trip I hope to repeat ! It’s a must for any traveler .

If the price of the night was like 359 euro per night, I could have give better points. But if you ask more than 700 euro per night, you expect everything is on the level. I still could accept the informal manner of the receiving guest and not working the electric charge for the car. But if there is nobody to help to work the charger and there is just a sofa without table nor other chair to sit together when you offer a suit room and there is no bath tub and the bed side light is not working, it is too much. The room is roughly renovated without a feeling. Again, it is ok if it is just a hotel in a provincial town, but it is part of the world famous three star restaurant where you spend 1000 euro for lunch. I am just disappointed.
Be the first to ReplyBest meal of my life
I do not think there is anything I can add to the praise chef Bottura receives for his inventive and surprising cuisine. However, I finally managed to try the meal served at Casa Maria Luigia, which offer a convivial experience with a very limited number of tables. The chef and his amazing brigade - a big round of applause should be tributed to Chef Jessica and her team- present his most iconic plates and I almost cried over The 5 ages of Parmesan. Pure genius in a bowl. The host is charming and I am looking forward to sleeping at the residence next time!
Be the first to ReplyA dream location for a dream vacation
A dream location for a dream vacation. The abode is just awesome in every way, not a hotel but a home. The food is outstanding and the service is impeccable. The place is close to the city of Modena but away from all the noise. Squeeze in a meal or 2 or 3 at any of Massimo Bottura's restaurants here in the city.

We can’t give this property enough stars! Everything about it is PERFECT! The grounds are magnificent and so well manicured. The staff goes above and beyond to please. The suites are beautiful, each with its own personality and special touches. We had the penthouse suite and it was so spacious and beautiful! The breakfasts were like no other we have ever experienced, and we travel extensively and stay and top notch properties around the world! The guest kitchen is unbelievable! No stone was left unturned and in such an inviting an relaxing setting. We had dinner at Francescana Maria Luigia one night and all I can say is WOW! What a memorable dining experience! Massimo was there and came by to introduce himself to every table. The food was off the charts-delicious and works of art! We hope to return someday soon!

If you have watched Massimo & Lara on Netflix and it moved you in anyway, then to experience the passion, fun, and unimaginable memories of their love story and Massimo's childhood in person will be icing on the cake. When my wife got excited about the opportunity to book this experience and stay at the villa her first emotion was excitement, followed by hesitation (sticker shock). As usual, I quickly said Book It. Can you really put a price on memories? For it is the secret but not so secret ingredient to a happy fulfilling life. We were blessed to share this experience with another couple. Its more fun that way...its too much champagne for 2 ;) From the excitement of being whisked away on the Golf Cart, to the exploration of one of the most thoughtful and jaw dropping accommodations we have stayed at every moment we savored and will continue to remember (thanks snapchat!) in our hearts. The dining experience was amazing. I think Massimo wanted to curate that family feeling that he grew up with. Every detail from his team, to the story telling, to the ambiance has been masterfully thought out and even a week later sitting here in the states I find myself re-watching the snapchat stories. By far the best part and something I hope everyone may one day experience was when
Be the first to ReplyI'm now officially ruined from future hotel stays
My wife & I stayed here to finish up our trip to Italy, and wow, what a finale. The facility itself was beautiful - a historical (but modern amenities on the inside) Italian villa surrounded by a peaceful sanctuary compromised of a relaxing pool, gardens, relaxation areas, & a man-garage containing a gym & Massimo's collection of Ferrari's & Ducati's. We even met Massimo's wife Laura here who couldn't have been more of a gracious host. We then had what we had come here for - Massimo's multi-course feast, and it was better than what we hoped for. Massimo was there to engage the diners in this experience & he too came off as a gracious & entertaining host. He even took a pic with the wife & I. His main chef (forgot her name) was also entertaining & informative. It all made for a memorable evening we'll always cherish. Also the service was some of the best I've ever had. Shout out to Eduardo for his over-the-top service during our stay. He even opened up the kitchen a little earlier than normal to accommodate our morning departure for the airport. I could go on about how great this place is. Hopefully we can return someday.
Be the first to ReplyThe only bad thing about this place is that it ruins "real life" for you
There are no words that can describe my stay at Maria Luigia. The philosophy of the place is a home away from home, and they absolutely nail that in every best and perfect way possible. The property has everything: - A jazz collection with thousands of listening options and the best speakers I've ever had the pleasure of listening to. - Incredible staff that goes above and beyond to fulfill your every want and needs. - A sauna and a steam room - An open fridge with unlimited beverages and the most amazing snacks you'll ever have - A gym with state-of-the-art machines and just casually a few Ferraris and Ducatti's, just so you have something to look at while you exercise - The best restaurant in the world - The best breakfast in the world (by far) - A pretty amazing pool - Awesome rooms with extremely cool decorations, the most comfortable bath robes ever, a free mini-bar with everything you'll ever need and some food. - The best negroni I've ever had - The best coffee I've ever had And don't get me started with Francescana at Maria Luigia... Honestly, I've stayed in some pretty awesome hotels, but for this price, I truly believe this is the best hotel in the world, so please do not hesitate about booking here, it's worth every cent. Also, thank you to all the staff who made this stay special, they're the ones that give the soul to Maria Luigia and they do make you feel like you're home.
Be the first to ReplyBeautiful, hospitable and delicious
I have never stayed at a nicer hotel with an incredible facility and thoughtful hospitality. It didn’t hurt that we had a guaranteed dinner reservation for Massimo Bottura’s restaurant on the premises. The room was beautiful and luxurious with a comfortable bed, great shower and cheese on arrival. The snacks downstairs and breakfast were delicious and in generous portions. Dinner was an almost four hour experience of the greatest hits of Francescana with stories from Massimo and his chef, Jessica. It was fun to be at a communal table and to be able to walk up to the kitchen to watch the plating. The staff anticipated our needs and the grounds were beautiful. Lara Gilmore was a gracious host and remembered us the next morning when she stopped to talk with us. We only stayed one night on our honeymoon but are already planning a multi day stay for a future landmark anniversary. If you can swing it, do whatever you can to stay here.

Be the first to ReplyWhat a Superb Experience!
Don’t miss the opportunity to enjoy this once in a lifetime experience. Just staying at Casa Maria Luigia is an experience by itself. The impecable service and details within the property made our stay unique and one of the highlights of our trip to Italy. We drove down the driveway on a foggy Saturday afternoon to a majestic villa without expecting much but once we got the tour of the property we knew we were in for a treat. If the music room, kitchen and reading room wasn’t enough we got to experience a magnificent dinner on the small restaurant set on an old barn with just 16 seats. The menu which included the most famous dishes from Osteria Franciscana was perfectly prepared by Chef Jessica and her staff. The evening started with and introduction by Lara who welcome us to what seems their home away from home. Chef Jessica followed with the introduction to the nights journey through food which played out perfectly. Our highlight was definitely getting the opportunity to meet Massimo Bottura in person which left us kind of starstruck since came in to meet and talk with every single table. He’s presence was definitely felt since he brings such passion and life to everything he explained that night. Cut to the next morning when you are treated with an amazing breakfast prepared by world class chefs using all fresh locally source produce that will leave you wanting more. When in Casa Maria Luigia don’t leave without walking the ground and especially without visiting the playground which assure will leave you speechless!
If you can try to make it to Casa Maria Luigia at least for one night and you won’t regret it.
A delectable feast of parmigiano and (justified) self hype
The food is out of question. Some people care about the bill. I am lucky not to have to, so my criticism isn’t about value, price, etc, but about the overinflated image and personality cult built around Mr Bottura (who wouldn’t have one, if named worlds best chef?)
Bottura the genius, Bottura the benefactor, Bottura the socially conscious, Bottura the sustainable, etc etc
Admittedly, as he said to us during dinner, success is a mortal sin in Italy, and maybe as a fellow
Italian I am just condemning his sin.
But why did he have to sport his success to his diners? There’s nothing Franciscan about it…
On absolute terms, the culinary experience is delectable, the social setting is outstanding with communal tables and plenty of opportunities to make good conversation and friends
Personal taste is personal, and the best dish to me was the final tortellini, more conventional than the other more ‘creative’ dishes, yet infinitely more honest to heritage and to the taste of Emilia than the other plates on offer.
As said, what i found less tasteful about the experience was the obsession with storytelling, the similarities made between the artwork and the food, and lots of unnecessary bla bla bla, which works for finer brains than mine, I guess, but not for empty stomachs. Thats what people cone for, I guess…
Ultimately if the philosophy is simplicity, the food should speak for itself, even to the uneducated and stupid
Mr Bottura, as I said above, is kind enough to make his appearance, chat with customers and take pictures. Some chefs at his level shun away from human contact. Bravo to him
The feel, however, is that this is an experience catered chiefly for Americans -and other non-Italians of Anglo-Saxon culture- who are over joyed taking pictures of him (i took one, by the way) saying the usual jokes, listening to the hagiography made by his sous chefs, that characterizes a larger than life Italian bon vivant genius, which he most probably is.
I doubt they dare boasting such grandeur to Italian customers in Italian, as they probably retain a good sense of ridicule
The executive chef , a lovely Canadian girl, depicted Southern Italy in a way that i found cute but somewhat derogatory, full of common places, involuntarily bordering racism, something southern people in Italy are accustomed to, regrettably
Unlike a conventional restaurant experience, there is no room for criticizing or questioning, rather it is assumed that everyone comes here to the shrine to pray.
There wasn’t much to criticize, though, about the concept and food, which are an Italian uber excellence and remind us that cuisine is not about making wild herbs and insects edible, but about heritage, products, inventiveness and technique
My new happy place!
We have traveled the world, and there are only a few places that have been truly perfect in every way - this is now one of them. That the meals are incredible goes without saying - these are Massimo Bottura's restaurants after all. What makes this place truly special is the warmth with which the Botturas infuse this place. They say that they want the casa to feel like a home away from home, and you can tell they mean it from the careful selection of the art and an accompanying letter to explain them, to the small touches like snacks and drinks in the kitchen and in your room, and an invitation to choose any of the 6,000 records from Massimo's personal collection in the music room. The couple is very present as well, which makes it all the more special.
Be sure to stroll around their gardens (especially the vegetable garden!), and a work out in their "playground" is a must-do. The so-called playground is a gym with incredible art and the chef's collection of motorcycles. This is also where they have the Sunday brunch, which we heard is also a must. We did not know about this, so we missed it, but honestly, the breakfast was so satisfying, we left completely satiated. The breakfast was truly special - it hit every one of what I would consider perfect.
The one thing that still needs work is their massage services, which lacked the professionalism and perfection of everything else. The table is one of the fold up travel tables, and the masseuse starts face up with the feet. You are uncovered the entire time, which not only got cold, but could also feel uncomfortable if you are modest.
That's a small thing though. I would return in a heartbeat.
A Heavenly place in Modena
A truly magical place. Go in, feel like home away from home and enjoy every single moment in this amazing place. Starting the simple joys in the magical swing in the garden and up to the comfy luxurious rooms I really think it cannot get better than this... Beautiful place with incredible thoughtful communal areas, rooms and magnificent gardens. In the morning you'll have one of the best breakfast cooked by some of the best chefs in a high quality 3 star (Michelin) level breakfast. I cannot recommend more, this is just heaven.
Be the first to Reply5 starts isn't enough!
I've never been more excited to write a review. Our stay at Casa Maria Luigia soared higher than our highest expectations. I've traveled to many places, stayed at beautiful hotels, yet, without a doubt, this experience topped the list.
Yes, the property is stunning, the design impeccable and the food absolutely AMAZING (Massimo is a modest genius) but to go a step further and the reason our stay was so memorable was the people -- specifically Lara, the brains behind the flawless operation. The personal touches (her bringing fresh watermelon to us by the pool, leaving notes in the kitchen in case we needed anything and beautifully sharing the story behind each dish we ate), those human moments brought everything together in a way we'll never forget. I could go on and on but I simply cannot recommend Casa Maria Luigia enough. I will certainly be back!
