I discovered CAPO by a local that told us it was one of the best restaurants around this area and he was right, I LOVED IT! If you live in LA or you just visiting but want to have a nice, elegant, intimate dinner away from the craziness and business of other restaurants in the city, this is the place. The room is small but cozy, it has a chic bar and there's art in all the walls. The server was very attentive and knowledgeable. He made us some suggestions about some cuts of meat and fish that can be cook in a fireplace-grill. On your way to the restroom you pass by the open-fire grill and can appreciate how effortlessly the man cook each cut to perfection. We ordered the tuna tartar, the corn ravioli and the branzino which was OUTSTANDING! It was cooked in the fire-grilled that gave it the smoky taste yet so tender. Everything was delicious. By the way, the wine-list is incredible, so many options. To pair with our meal we had an amazing white wine (chardonnay) that the sommelier suggested for us from Burgandy. The whole experience was lovely and we are definitely coming back.

I love this place! Between the winter and the sommelier and had a fabulous pairing and sharing for four.
Be the first to ReplyLongtime favorite - low-key & quiet/relaxing.
Don't come here and pinch pennies. Enjoy yourself and have a good time. It's nice to get away from the crazy hustle and bustle of other restaurants in this area. Kind of feels like Sun Valley or Aspen - definitely recommend if that's your vibe.
Be the first to ReplyFood is OK.
Nothing to brag about. Definitely, not worth the price they charge. I have had much better Italian food costing less than half of what they charge. Service is again OK. Not worth the 20% tip they forced on to your bill. They charge 20% tip even for a party of 2 and their service definitely not warrant this much. Does not offer regular water only Sparkling or Still which they charged heftily. They watch carefully on your water consumption and will keep filling your glass. The inside seatings have a nice homy feel. The outside seatings are terrible and dark. Can hardly read the menu. Overall, they charged like a Michelin starred restaurant but their food and service is where you can find at any local Italian restaurant. Not worth a try.

I was leaning toward a 4 due to the fact everything was excellent but the prices were too high. But I bumped it up to 5 because of the quality of the steaks. A lot of places in Santa Mon under deliver on steaks so that gets these guys the 5. Having said that the chicken and other meats here are just OK. I would pair one of their pastas with a steak.

This place is the epitome of the thinking: "It's super expensive so it must be super good." I am blown away by how many good reviews this place has to be honest. It must be because everyone ends up spending so much money, they have to tell themselves it was good to justify it, and keep from crying that it was such a waste of money. It is either that or these people have no idea what really great, gourmet food tases like. As a psychologist, I have to believe it is the former where people think that if they are paying much more for something, it must be good--but let me assure you, it is not. This place has everyone fooled. A group of 4 of us dined here February 3, 2024, to celebrate a friends bday. From the start we were met with a maitre'd /manager John, who had a holier than thou attitude, and was irritable and angry for some reason. We had a lovely waitress, however, when we apparently were taking too long to order, John stormed over and forced us to give him our whole order immediately, and then directly asked the bday girl what she wanted for her dessert, ruining the surprise. Now I have been to LOTS of the top 50 restaurants around the world, many 1 and 2 star Michelin restaurants, and lived in Switzerland for 3 years, so I know what amazing food looks and tastes like, and am not afraid to pay for it. The food here, based on the price, is an absolute joke. Their prices are similar to 2 star Michelin restaurants, yet barely come close to a 1 star...which makes me wonder why this place doesn't even have a star. The food was average at best, considering the ridiculous prices. The waitress and other service staff were great, but then it was ruined when John literally would start clearing people's plates while they were still eating. The piece de resistance was when two minutes after paying the bill, John once again angrily came over and literally told us we had to leave because they needed the table--truly remarkable. At that point, he completely ruined whatever semblance of a nice evening we had, and it became abundantly clear why this place doesn't have any Michelin Stars, or any class. Please don't be fooled by the delusion that because this place is so expensive, it must be so good. Save your money and go elsewhere, there are SO many much better quality food and service restaurants in LA for the money.

Be the first to ReplyI would say it's one of the best Italian restaurants in
I would say it's one of the best Italian restaurants in Santa Monica, but it does have some issues. It's really small and intimate on the inside, you feel like you are eating in someone's house. It reminds me of a few restaurants that I ate in when I was in Italy last so it had a very authentic feel to me. I am also half Italian so I feel I know good and bad Italian food. The issue we had is that a lot of the items are overpriced. For example steak tartare is $48 and a simple grilled Branzino is $85. For these prices we all felt the food wasn't special enough to justify the prices. They don't have a parking lot but metered street parking is easy to find or your other best option would be their valet for $15. Our server was very polite and all of our items came out very quickly. They were a bit slow on the drink refills, but aside from that everything else was very fast. I started off with the Filet Mignon Tartare and it was very good, although it didn't have any spice to it so wish it had some mustard or horseradish to it because it felt a little dry to me. Also expensive for $48 which I don't understand, but I did enjoy it. For my entree I chose the Bucatini with Lamb Ragu and it was fantastic. The portion was a bit small but it had really great and deep flavors. After I finished with the Chocolate Soufflé and it was A+. I truly loved it and would highly recommend ordering it. Overall a nice dinner in a beautiful location although it is overpriced. I would recommend but the price points are really strange.
Be the first to ReplyI will preface this by saying the food was lovely.
The prices however are outrageous: an average of $45 for a small pasta plate. While I understand living wages, it seems excessive.
Be the first to ReplyThe Caesar salad was ok.
The pasta was ok. The salmon was DELICIOUS. I'd come back again for the salmon alone.
Be the first to ReplyLove the ambiance, definitely an experience.
Servers are very well mannered and educated

Rarely does a restaurant exist where everything is spot on! Capo is just that. You enter the restaurant through a large rustic wooden door, two sets of heavy black velvet curtains, and boom! surprised by a spectacular and magical dinning room. Low-key lighting with spots of colorfully original art and a very vibrant choice of music for an extra sexy touch. Immediately you know it's going to be a wonderful evening. Frank the manager and maître d', is the perfect representative for this place. He made us feel special and comfortable from the moment we walked in. He also made noticeable rounds, checking in often and offered his incredible knowledge of the menu. Our waiter and the entire staff was friendly, gracious, professional and super fun! The meal was so incredibly original and delicious! Contemporary Italian cuisine of the highest next level. You can tell that everything was creatively designed with so much love a care, right down to the incredible plates. Wow! What an exciting adventure! So good, so delicious, so interesting and fun!! Yes I highly recommend Capo!!
Be the first to ReplyI'm giving Capo 3 stars for overall value.
Prices are sky high then they have the balls to add on a fee to help pay for employee benefits ? How pathetic. Pay your own employee benefits just like the rest of the employers in the country. Why are employee benefits my problem ? Don't tell me you don't want to add to the cost of the menu items, you already are overcharging. Imagine if every time you check out at Home Depot they add on to the receipt for employee benefits, how would that go over ?

Beautiful, elegant and so chic! Very special place tucked away in Santa Monica. Special moments!!
Be the first to ReplyNot a place worth coming back .
Prices are high for the quality and portion of food . For instance , a Caesar salad is over $30 and portion is small so we had to order 2 of those for 6 people. Although, I did like that the Caesar had grilled lettuce and they chopped it up for us . The heirloom vegetables and burrata was over $40 and between 6 people we each got a small spoonful . Corn truffle ravioli and gnocchi were good but also small portion and over priced . They ran out of the bone-in rib eye which was disappointing so we ordered a different cut and asked to be cooked medium . It came out well-done so we sent it back to get a new one which took another half an hour. They ask that you order everything ahead and they course it so when we got our mains and the steak wasn't cooked properly , we had to wait again for that course before moving in to dessert . We got the chocolate volcano and berry crumble for dessert and I think that was my fav part of the meal. It took a long time to get our food overall. Our reservation was at 7:30pm and we left at 10:30 pm . One thing I did appreciate is their unique plates and cup designs. Gave the place character but I still feel there are better Italian places in Los Angeles with better food and better prices.

I don't miss much about living in LA, but Capo is one of the few. I've never had a bad meal here. Everything from the food, to the service, to the - ambiance is top notch. The restaurant is very unassuming from the road, vut once you enter you'll understand. I personally prefer sitting inside- there's art everywhere (even the glassware) and the bar is super intimate and comfortable. However, there's also a nice patio (since covid). While the food/drinks are expensive, it's worth it for the experience. The wine list and cocktail menu are out of this world, and the complimentary tray of cookies at the end of your meal are always a delight. Additionally, if you can't decide on a pasta dish, you split a dish to contain 2 which is so appreciated. Some of my favorite dishes:- White corn ravioli with black truffles-Rigatoni with truffle meat sauce -Artichoke hearts-Souffle-Grilled caesar -Octopus Some things to note:- Definitely make a reservation (even for the bar)- If you bring your own wine it's a $75 corkage fee (there was one instance that we were not advised of the price prior to them opening it which was a little frustrating, so just be aware)
Be the first to ReplyThought we were going to get amazing Italian.
Pasta and as bland, hard to connect for reservations even though the place was basically empty
Be the first to ReplySimply the best.
The corn truffle ravioli is cooked to perfection and the sauce is incredible.
Be the first to ReplyI visited here twice.
The food is good; however, not worth the price. Everything is excessively overpriced. Service was as expected. The decor is filled with strange trinkets from grandmas house and space is extremely tight. You will be sitting elbow to elbow with other diners and experience long wait times for food. Expect to spend a lot of time and money, leaving a bit unsatisfied. Worth a try it but nothing to come back to. Best of luck with reading and also understanding the menu.
Be the first to ReplyAmbiance: dim and romantic scenery.
Pretentious crowd. Service: multiple waiters, neutral. Not kind nor mean. Their decanter is the size and shape of a wine bottle, which I think was meant to be a water pitcher. For the price of their wines I'm surprised they don't have better equipment and wine service etiquette. $75 corkage fee...Food: grilled caesar salad was delightful. Pastas were average. The pastas at Barrique, Colapasta, and Pace are significantly better. Deserts are not bad, not memorable. Overall: for the amount I spent, you could dine like a king and come away much happier at the other restaurants I mentioned above.
Be the first to ReplyI came into Capo for a late night bite to eat.
I sat at the bar alone. Two suited men walk in and I see the manager in an excited frenzy and he ushered them over to the bar. My hand bag was on the seat next to me and without asking, and in a blink of an eye, the manger picked up my hand bag to move it to the seat on the other side of me. I said to him "I can move my bag if you ask me". But he was so excited about pleasing theses men he wasn't listening. Then the men got up because their table was ready and the manager picked up my bag again with out asking, to put it back on the original seat. I grabbed my bag mid air and said "will you stop touching my bag please". He made a joke, something about not stealing my bag and hurried off after the important men. I watched him engage with other customers, but not with me. I did not look the part, I was in very casual clothing and alone, but the last time I checked my money worked the same as everyone else's in that restaurant! They waiter/bar man poured me a glass of water a quarter full and never topped it up, just let it sit empty after I drink it. I ordered a pasta dish and coffee. All I wanted was a quick bite to eat to end my day. Instead I was made to feel awkward and out of place, yet they charged me full price. Please do better Capo, this is not how you would expect to be treated so don't treat others this way. And never touch a woman's hand bad with out asking. It is rude. nothing to do with steeling, but everything to do with good manners. In my opinion I just put $70 down the drain.

Wow. Crab cake, rack of lamb, potatoes au gratin, and soufflé. Wow, Wow. The quality of theExcellent service was matched by the quality of the meal.
Be the first to ReplyI left hungry.
The portions were extremely small for the price. To put in perspective, I'm a small female, and I had two appetizers and one entree (1/2 the Rigatoni Tartufo Ragu & 1/2 corn Ravioli, Tartufo). The corn ravioli came with exactly 12 small raviolis. The artichoke appetizer was painful to eat because it had a hard shell, and it was difficult to negotiate the tender pieces from it. The octopus appetizer was OK, except the photographs online are misleading, as the portion was much smaller than any photos I saw. The Tartufo Ragu was great with the exception of small size. The corn ravioli had truffle shavings although I would have preferred a truffle mixture instead. They also ask you to decide on desert when you're ordering your meal, and you apparently can't ask for desert after your meal. Do not recommend.
