😒 3/5 - Such high expectations

I was so happy to her about a decent German restaurant in Oakland. We checked out the menu online and it looked really great. My favorite German dish, Schweinehaxe (pork knuckle) was on the menu, so it was a no brainer.
The place is located on the water of the Alameda estuary and is very scenic. The beer list was filed with a range of German and Belgian options as well as local brews. Seekking refuge from the overhopped IPAs of the day, I had an amazing malty mai-bock, while the others chose a range of altbier and a schwarzbier.
When our food arrived, yes the schweinehaxe, it was, as expected, typical 'American portions,' enough to fed a family of four. The sauerkraut was authentic and the spaetzle was fantastic. My wife ordered the truffle spaetzle and it was really amazing. But, the star of the show, the pork knuckle, was a massive disappointment. The knuckle is roasted with the skin on to create a nice crackling on the outside, surrounding the tender meat. Unfortunately, the skin on this knuckle was chewy, as if it had been heated in a microwave after the initial cooking, so that what should have been the highlight of the dish, wasn't even touched. The pork itself was decent, but the trauma of chewy pig skin was hard to overcome.
Fortunately, there was some redemption with the struedel, which was very nice, and topped with a caramel sauce and whipped cream.
One final note, the staff, perhaps overwhelmed with reopening, were a bit snarky. Maybe it has just been too long since I moved form the Bay Area and that is the new service standard.
i will likely go back to try other dishes, but avoid the schweinehaxe like it is COVID-19.
