Brains, and brawn
โฆyouโll know what I mean when you order the quince dessert. Perfect space, if not for Brawn we would not have explored Shoreditch - great shops on the walk there. And, the venue scored points with our 24 y.o. joining us for dinner. A win-win.

Located near the flower market in Columbia road, a neighbourhood which is confirming itself as a vibrant food scene. This restaurant offers seasonal ingredients sourced from local suppliers, certainly catering locals but also food travellers looking for experimental small plates (many with an italian twist). It is located in yet another nicely-converted warehouse, it offers a full bar counter with stools and spacious tables. The service was friendly, efficient and informative if you have questions about the food or the wine. Ask for the full wine list.
Be the first to ReplyThis restaurant is absolutely surprises you.
This restaurant is absolutely surprises you. As so amazing and interesting combination of the food. The menu is changed every month. Try Burrata with peaches and Honeymoon Melon with Tomato. The fish was great as well and the chocolate dessert was delicious and really interesting. The home-made kombucha was delicious, as was every other dish we had.
Be the first to ReplyFabulous Casual Dining Restaurant
Today we payed our first visit to Brawn and what a fabulous lunch we enjoyed to. Set in the heart of Columbia Road , East London is where youโll find this trendy casual dining restaurant. The menu has a mediterranean theme that is designed for sharing although the sizes of the mains gives you the opportunity to have a starter , main and dessert if you so desire. We entered to receive a nice friendly welcome and as we looked around the restaurant was full with a good buzzy atmosphere. We were then escorted to our table which was in fact through the other side where you would also find the open kitchen. Once seated we were greeted by Victoria our waitress for the afternoon and who did a fabulous job in looking after us. We started with a cocktail while taking a look at the menu. After chatting to Victoria about the menu and her recommendations we placed our order. We started with a selection of snacks including Bread & Butter , Salame Campagnolo , Parmesan Fritters and Rabbit Rillete Toast. They were absolutely delicious and we couldnโt wait to see what would be coming next. It was now onto our starters where we would share an amazing Cuttlefish , nduja , chickpea , aioli along with a Cornish Crab , violet artichoke , celery , red chilli before finishing with Grilled Lamb Heart , friggitelli pepper , yoghurt , pistachio , mint. The flavours in each dish were perfectly balanced and a delight to eat. We then moved on to the main course where we were in for a real treat with two stunning dishes. My wife chose the Duck Leg with sprout tops , celeriac and pear. For myself I chose the Pork Loin with hispi cabbage , agen prune and mustard that was simply divine. We really were enjoying some amazing food all washed down with a fabulous Momento Mori 2020 Fistful of Flowers natural wine with flavours of pink grapefruit , peach and apricot. It was now time for a little break before moving on to Cheese and Dessert. This started with a selection of two cheeses with jelly and crackers. We followed this with the Quince Posset , biscotti and grappa as well as the heavenly Chocolate Tart with creme fraiche. We finished with a coffee to bring to an end a fantastic first visit to Brawn and one that I would love to repeat soon. The food and wine was amazing and our waitress Victoria was excellent so yes I would highly recommend a visit.
Be the first to ReplyDisappointing given the reputation
Went as a group of 5, taking the option for a shared menu. Price was 50/head. so not cheap. There were some excellent dished, but also a lot of mediocre ones. The lamb, for example was great, but our server recommended the pork which was dull, and the mushroom pasta one of our party had was poor. One of the starters was great - I think the dorstone with hazlenuts - the others fine but nothing special. Similarly the desserts weren't anything special, just fine but nothing to remember. All in all pleasant and fine, but nothing special.
Be the first to ReplyLovely but pricey!
A very nice experience and some tasty food. The snacks are a great selection alongside mains, however mains are expensive for their size. Staff very friendly and helpful.
Be the first to ReplyOutrageous prices for what was awful food served in joke sized portions.
Crunchy chickpeas which hadn't been cooked long enough and a small slither of tough , salty gammon described a pork fillet on the menu. Shameful
Be the first to ReplyPricey small plates
Four for a family lunch. The open kitchen behind us was noisy. The food was good but expensive as the menu didn't make it clear the dishes were small plate portions. We left feeling quite hungry.
Be the first to ReplyWorst dining experience of my life
I first went to Brawn in December 2021 for dinner with my two dogs. I did not book at table, but just showed up with the dogs after Xmas markets in Columbia Road and was told that the restaurant was dog friendly.
I booked at table for a group of 4 friends at 18:15 today. I arrived in time with one of my dogs (a toy cockapoo), but was told that dogs are no longer allowed for dinner. I was offered no solution, or no apology, but was just turned away. So I sat down at the table with a friend, but our husbands had to go back home to drop the dog. In the meantime, we started ordering drinks and food.
After 10 minutes. the staff immediately started warning us that the table reservation was for 2 hours only, and that we had to hurry ordering food. Our husbands arrived at 18:37 (22 minutes delay). We quickly ate the starters and ordered the mains.
The food was absolutely delicious, but we were interrupted every 10 minutes by waiters telling us we had to rush as we only had the table for 2 hours.
This is the first time in my life I am writing a bad review about a restaurant. Even if there is something I don't like about a restaurant, I never write bad reviews, especially for small independent restaurant. But this was TRULY the worst experience of my life. The staff kept on rushing us every 10 minutes. We ordered 3 bottles of wine, starters, mains and desserts, but they treated us awfully. I never experienced such awful customer service in my life - I'd say McDonalds is better than this restaurant. We live 10-min walk distance and we absolutely loved the food, but would never go back.
We were forced to leave the table at 8:19pm. When I told the manager that the service had been awful, he started complaining that we arrived late, and he had the guests waiting for a table. He also mentioned that one of the next guests was a pregnant woman. This is not our problem - you should make sure you have at least a 15-minutes gap between one table and the next one. Truly awful.
Delicious lunch
Had a delicious lunch at Brawn: tender braised ox-cheek served with proper fresh grated horse-radish. A pity my friend and I were in a hurry, so only had a main but will certainly try to return for a full meal. Good friendly service, bright airy dining area. Prices a bit high but this is Shoreditch - it's many years since this was a place for bargain dining.
Be the first to ReplyExceptional food and setting
Beautiful restaurant situated on Columbia Road. Situated in an old converted building this is cooking of an extremely high standard with exceptional ingredients . Relaxed service makes this quirky restaurant even more fun with knowledgable staff and sommelier
A defo if you are in the area
Nicest meal I ever had in London!
I loved this place. Unpretentious, lovely food, affordable and wonderful friendly staff! I will be back!
Be the first to ReplyWon't be rushing back
Achingly trendy place determined that an E2 postcode is no barrier to SW1W prices. The sourdough and butter was wonderful, and we munched our way through 2 portions.
My grilled mackerel was nice, though a portion I ate in tiny bites in order to make it last more than 20 seconds. ยฃ12.00.
He wanted veggie, but the only option was the pasta only without anchovies. Very poor show. He enjoyed it, but said in needed extra texture. My pork chop was a very depressing affair. Was it poached? Certainly no charring. Sat colourless and sad on the plate and was very chewy and devoid of any flavour whatsoever. No lovely jus, just a very thin watery broth with a few lentils swimming around and an overwhelming taste of mustard, given a large dollop was hidden under broccoli. It would be hard to waste a pork chop more spectacularly.
ALL the food was barely tepid, which is the most infuriating fad since nouvelle cuisine. Will these cooks get over themselves and start to serve hot food again? If it is to allow "the flavours to sing", then here their flavours were patently stone deaf. We will be voting with our feet and not returning to ANY of these pretentious places who think almost cold food is what we punters want.
Service was by the predictably distant hipsters. As un-warm as the food.
It was partly saved by the baked custard dessert which was truly orgasmic. A decent pud, however, cannot alone rescue a completely underwhelming and stupidly overpriced experience.
Chilled out lunch at Brawn
This little local restaurant has a very relaxed ambiance and I enjoyed just being in the space before the food had even hit the table.
The menu is short, which is not a bad thing in my book, however, the only vegetarian main was Casarecce, Cavolo Nero, Anchovy and Pecorino; obviously without the anchovy for me. This was a little disappointing as it meant I had no choice in a main course, so maybe an additional, total, veggie dish would be a good idea for annoying veggies like me. When the casarecce arrived it was very good, very fresh, however, it wasn't hot just warm. I notice this a lot recently, food arriving tepid, and wonder if this is a fad I have missed, I just hope it's a fad that fades.
My pudding, Dark Chocolate, Olive Oil & Sea Salt, was heaven!
This is a lovely little restaurant with a great wine cellar and top quality ingredients going into the dishes and the atmosphere is chilled, I only wish the main hadn't also been chilled (or chilly) and that there had been at least one total veggie main on the menu.
Epic
What can I say, we were booked in by friends as we apparently had to try this place, they were right! Top choices of wine, we chose the domaine Derain as recommended by the wine expert, definitely a good choice! Food was a small menu but outstanding, we had 4 courses from the light nibbles, fresh bread and salty butter, to finishing off with an outstanding pistachio parfait dessert . The whole ambiance and atmosphere here is spot on! Busy but relaxed. I will definitely be coming back. Thanks to all the team that night who made the experience what it was

...a lot of places in London think theyโre doing what Brawn have been doing for years but donโt quite get it (so) right. Great long, casual lunch with a few friends the other weekend. One friend an ex chef and one with food intolerances both highly satisfied. So glad to see this place back and busier and better than ever post lockdown. Effortlessly delicious produce driven modern dishes always executed so well. Lovely staff (always), great high quality house wine, posh handwash in the loos and of cause their to do for bread. The first restaurant in London I always recommend to anyone. Near perfect. Please donโt change...
Be the first to ReplyDecent but very overpriced.
Decent but very overpriced. Scallops bit bland for ยฃ15. Squid and chickpeas good. Pint of beer is ยฃ7
Be the first to ReplyExcellent, thoughtful food with a fantastic wine selection
My wife and I came here for the first time last weekend and were really blown away by the entire experience. The food was truly excellent, the wine selection was top notch and the service was friendly and attentive without being overbearing. They are doing a bang-up job at this spot. We highly recommend and will surely be back.
