Privileged to have came to this restaurant twice.
Intimate setting, laid back, great food and very attentive staff. My love partner brought me here for Valentines Day and recently for my birthday. It's one of his favorite restaurant. Their tasting menu were exquisite and their ala carte menu is actually really reasonably priced. Definitely holds a lot of food memories here. And special thanks and shoutout to the very well appreciated handwritten greetings with my birthday cake!

It's hard to nab a reservation here so I was very excited to finally get to check this place out! The ambience is interesting... intimate, casual, and artsy. I did find the one completely bare wall to be a little jarring. Other than that the comfy lounge chairs were cool and fun. There's a small bar with counter seating in addition to the lounge. We ordered a few of the drinks and they were all excellent. My boyfriend particularly enjoyed his matcha manhattan. For the food, we tried a number of the dishes. You MUST get the wagyu tartare. This is outstanding and served on a cheesy toast. GET THIS. I was also surprised by how much I liked the roasted vegetables - unusual when veggies are quite this tasty. We also tried a pork belly rice dish and the omakase. The omakase came with 8 pieces and a small sushi roll (For $110). While some of the pieces were good, for that price I think you can get a lot better. Would skip it. Overall, it was a unique and interesting experience. Some of the dishes knocked it out of the park and the drinks were excellent. It's pretty pricey but I guess that's what you pay for the exclusivity. Good for small groups!
Be the first to ReplyWe started with the washu beef tartare on blue cheese toast.
It was so awesome.. I don't even like tartare but this was so delicious. The miso black cod with grilled miso marinated mushroom was so well made and yummy. The fish came off in perfect slices in its own. So tastyThe foie gras sushi was so delicious.. who would have even thought it!Washu beef steak sampler was the way to go to sample all the different parts, which tasted completely different.Love the food! I will be back for sure!

Given the exclusivity of the restaurant, the ambience is more intimate and laid back - everything is very simple and minimalistic. Our server was very thorough and we're so glad to be recommended the two specials for the night - omakase and steak platter, which were the most memorable dishes of the night. Though the number of guests who can enter is limited, service was slow and we were in the restaurant for 3 hours.
Be the first to ReplyWe have been coming to this restaurant for many years, back
We have been coming to this restaurant for many years, back when Kadoi-san was the General Manager and reservations were mainly available to existing patrons. Recently (after the pandemic), food and service have deteriorated to a disappointing level, especially the service. Go somewhere else for sushi or sashimi, mini-burger or steak, nothing special here.
Be the first to ReplyFirst I want to start by saying I LOVE the Bohemian.
We've been going there for many years now regularly, and it's always been a very special experience with great food to boot. However I am going to give a low rating this time as a warning to management. The last few times we've been there have been pretty "meh", with the last time in particular being really bad.Let's start with the elephant in the room: there are some days (during the week?) where staff is just bad. Some examples of that:- We arrived right on time for our reservation and rang at the door. Once. Twice. Thrice. Nobody answered or let us in. 5 mins later and after ringing many times we were finally let in... by someone who was waiting for the restroom. What the hell Bohemian? I get being busy but literally not even acknowledging us or opening the door? Why? There was another group after us, staff didn't open to them for at least 15 mins so it was not just us. Really bizarre behavior, especially when it's cold outside.- Then we were told the table is almost ready it will be another 5 mins. We wait, then 15 mins later we ask again and they say it will be another 5 mins... And before you know it 40 mins have passed and we don't yet have our table. I get sometimes having some delays, but 45 mins after reservation is NOT ok. And the worst is that staff was just ignoring us, I had to basically camp in front of the kitchen to get them to talk to us. They could have offered a drink or something for the inconvenience, but nope, just ignoring us was better I guess. Some of the rudest staff I have ever seen in any restaurant, what the hell happened Bohemian from the days your staff was actually building connections with your customers? Then beyond the obvious staff problems there's been a shift since the pandemic that makes Bohemian less of a stellar experience:- A lot of tables, chairs and furniture are very worn out. Definitely could use a refresh.- They seem to have added some tables in the middle which were previously empty. What was once a pretty quiet and "chill" room is now super crowded and noisy. Definitely no longer getting the "zen" vibes we were getting for the first many years.- Service is just hit and miss. After we (finally) get seated, anything goes. I'm fine with some wait, but waiting 1 hour to get cocktails to the point they arrive after some dishes is ridiculous. Then dishes regularly come in any order, so we got 2/3 appetizers together for a table of 3 and the last one came like 30 mins later, not great...For the food I'll just say it is always great as usual, if there's one thing where quality has not dropped it's the food which is always consistent, so kudos to the chefs in the kitchen. But the staff at the bar and dining room needs to get their act together. We'll probably still be back despite the terrible experience last time, but it's definitely falling out from our go-to list and must-haves when we have guests to nice-to-haves. Hopefully management gets the message and makes some adjustments.

Been here several times and for the most part it's been very consistent. Food is very good, though the rice dishes (other than the risotto) were mediocre. Mac & cheese is out of this world, Branzino is perfect, washu sliders delectable. Chicken kara age was good but surprisingly salty. Service is very nice but veeery slow. Took about 40 minutes to get the first drinks. Having said that, we will definitely be back.
Be the first to ReplyIf this is your first time here, you can only sit outside.
The restaurant confused with that arrogant policy.

Meal was amazing but My entire party was extremely disappointed that they didn't have the pre fixed option. The pre fixed was the reason we came here and I really en outage management to bring it back.

Had a great experience dining here for my friend's birthday! We had been looking forward to this for a while, and we were really impressed with so many of the dishes we ordered. The restaurant is undoubtedly pretty hard to find, as it's tucked away and very small. The atmosphere inside is quiet and feels very intimate and cozy. They do have a bar area, but aside from that, there were only about 6 tables when we were visiting, and each is set up kind of like couches with a coffee table. The chairs are incredibly comfortable. Perfect for napping between courses ;).We got a variety of items to share. The portions here are fairly small but the quality of the food is exquisite. We started off with the Karaage, which was juicy and crispy. We then had the Mac and Cheese with Focaccia, which was relatively tasty, but I admit it felt a little out of place on their menu. The Wagyu and Uni Sushi was probably the most memorable dish, as it was very flavorful and came with a hefty portion of both uni and wagyu beef. The Omakase was very fresh, though I do think I've had better omakase before at a less expensive price point. The Pork Belly and Foie Gras Kamameshi was nothing too special for me and the portions were very small, but the Steak Platter had a generous assortment of meat, with delicious eggplant and potatoes that were perfectly fried and seasoned. For me, the service is the one thing that brought the experience down to four stars. The servers were overall very kind, but they forgot a few things we asked for. We also wanted a group photo, but had to ask a few waitresses to take it before one of them actually did. I also want to mention that because the restaurant is so small and quiet, it's fairly easy to hear and unintentionally eavesdrop on the conversations of other patrons. Not necessarily a bad thing though lol.
Be the first to ReplyIt's hard to rate Bohemian as a restaurant, because given
It's hard to rate Bohemian as a restaurant, because given the referral system for reservations, more homely setup, and more experimental style, it's more of a pop-up / exclusive club. Given that, I think there are two main ways to judge the place -- as a more private establishment to hang out and enjoy as a hospitality standpoint, or as a traditional dine and drink restaurant. From the dining side, the prices are high, and at the fine dining level, except without fine dining characteristics. The has a more rustic, countryside and home-vibe to it, rather than elegance and sophistication (although tbh I'm not all for that all the time either, just to compare to "fine dining" standards). Given that, charging high prices for meats and materials that you can likely get yourself for a lot cheaper makes the value of coming to Bohemian for food rather not worth it. For example, if you get their Washugyu meat selection, it's pretty much just some roasted potatoes, carrots and beets, along with some standard cooked meat, put on a wooden board. Is it special? Not really. However, the creativity of some other dishes, uniqueness that you can't get it at any other Japanese restaurant in the city (Foie Gras rice with Pork Belly? Hello?), maybe not anywhere else in the world, and the diversity definitely make this a special place to have select moments. Drinks are also rather expensive, something like 4x markup for pure bottles, BUT -- the cocktails are very reasonably priced, and if you need something on the value side, that's where you get it.So as a restaurant? I think Bohemian is an overpriced decent (but not mindblowingly good) restaurant.Now...as a place of hospitality, we're in the top of the top. Is it because of the referral system? Yes, that's very hard to do, and although I alluded to the price earlier, I think the private-ness and the small scale of the restaurant forces them to charge much higher prices for what you get. However, if you take in that you basically have an exclusive opportunity to come here, that's a premium that you'll have to pay. Is it nice to have? Yes, because the city is always getting more crowded, and having a place that can reliably provide service and high-quality food to you is something that you will find hard to get, or have to pay exorbitant prices for anyway.Bohemian is special because it is a one of one, run in a style that nobody can easily replicate, and has stayed true to its character as a true hole in the wall that is inaccessible to the public, meaning it will be able to maintain that status for a while. That effort should be commended, and I hope that all that have been here can enjoy the experience for a long time to come.
Be the first to ReplyAbsolutely love this place.
One of my favorite places to introduce friends to. Love how exclusive getting a reservation is. Food is always fantastic and so are the drinks. Staff is very friendly.

I'm a huge sushi / omakase aficionado, so when I heard about bohemian, I definitely wanted to check it out. For the price, exclusivity, and overall 'hype', I expected 5 star service, but was pretty underwhelmed at the attentiveness (again, if not for the hullabaloo around "no public phone #" and needing to "have a referral", would not have been so peeved). Cocktails were just alright, and appetizers were decent. However, our omakase came out all at once, not course by course - for any omakase fans out there, you know that's not traditional or how it should be done. Again, fine, but IMO not worth the hefty price tag (would much rather spend the same or less for a better experience at any of the other omakase experiences in NYC!)

Review for their Christmas Menu: I went on Christmas day, so I am not sure if they really don't have the prix fixe like the other reviewer said. I would be extremely disappointed if that were the case, but maybe it is time for a change...? But their prix fixe menu was perfection! why get rid of something that works? I will check on this on our next visit. Anyway, we came here for Christmas dinner. I assumed the restaurant was going to be full, so I was surprised when we were able to book the reservation just two days before Christmas. Over the phone they mentioned that it will be a Christmas prix fixe menu & we cannot order any a la carte menu items. The restaurant never got full the whole time we were there (around 2 hours). Service was pretty good. I think the short haired lady explained the menu items better than the other lady, but maybe the other lady is a newer employee. For $120 pp and for the ingredients they used, the price was great. I just did not enjoy the Christmas menu as much as I did with their prix fixe menu (they used to have???) I enjoyed the appetizer the most and then dashi wagyu sushi with uni. I felt like their sushi/ Christmas rolls had very fishy taste/smell than I am used to when I eat high quality sushi. Maybe because the ingredients are not so fresh on Christmas Day since the vendors probably don't deliver. Entree was okay. Dessert was okay. After trying their Christmas menu, all I really wanted the regular prix fixe or at least be able to order from their regular menu... I was also sad to find out that the heated toilet seat with disposable cover already on it was gone. It would have been perfect for the pandemic & the cold weather. I am still going to come back for their regular menu at another time when I visit NYC.

Food was underwhelmingI was very excited to try this placeHonestly forgot I tried the burgers before so got it again and it was not worth it. I thought that the last time I tried it lolBranzino was so good! I love the veggies it came with and everything went well togetherWagyu was so buttery and good but also too heavy. I liked it with the salt. Cheesecake was good! I ordered it since it was my bf bday and it was really nice that it was on the house. I expected to pay but it being complimentary was really niceService was really good but slow. It's cool to try but not sure it's worth the money.

It's been a while since I proposed to my wife in this restaurant, and it hurts to write I haven't been able to come for a few years. However, I have an excuse: my 3.5 year-old daughter. Bohemian is not the kind of place you go with an infant, and I had to wait until the toddler was old enough to behave like a rockstar (with some help from a videogame in my phone and some noise cancellation earphones). My wife's 40th birthday provided the right opportunity. It's not easy for a restaurant to satisfy such a grand event, but they sure delivered big. This place will never disappoint you. They don't offer the price fix menu anymore, so we ordered a la carte. It wasn't easy, because I would have chosen more than half of the items on the menu. Japanese omelette roll (with egg, grilled eel, uni, chives, mozzarella, parmigiano): OMG. A mouth watering concoction of flavors. You simply must get this. Karaage (Bohemian fried chicken): perfectly prepared, and the house spicy Mayo was phenomenal.Grilled branzino: this is the only item we had last time; delicious, sizable, perfect. Pork belly and foie gras kamameshi (steamed rice with pork belly and burdock topped by foie gras): rich yet smooth; decadent yet delicate; strong yet graceful; simply exquisite. One word about the impeccable service. It's not easy to find a classy restaurant without the pretentiousness that so often comes with it. To the contrary, you can't find a more personable (yet highly professional) staff. Most small restaurants wouldn't have been happy to give away a table for 4 to a couple with a toddler, and understandably so. Instead, we were treated as kings. This is class. Overall... This is THE place you want to bring that someone you want to impress.
Be the first to ReplyOne of the best experiences and meals I've ever had.
Everything from the starters to the entrees was fantastic. The quality of the meals was top tier, the flavor was robust, and the service was impeccable. It's amazing we even got a reservation here but glad we did. The restaurant is inside an renowned artists' home and very intimate. There's limited seating to probably around 5-6 parties. The service was quick, efficient and attentive. All in all, would 100% return, even though it cost a pretty penny.

My boyfriend took me here for my birthday and I loved it! It's a very intimate causal setting, it's a speakeasy vibe, no outside sign of the restaurant, you ring a doorbell to notify them you were there. Everything we ordered was tasty and worth the price. If you can get a reservation, definitely go! The sashimi was 10/10 some of the best Tuna I've had, definitely the best I've had in New York City.
