Unspectacular “Western of yesteryear” of the culinary kind
For almost 70 years, the "U.S. Army Garrison" was part of the cityscape of Mannheim. It comprised around 2,000 buildings on an area of around 500 hectares and consisted of a whole series of barracks in and around Mannheim. Between 1945 and 2015, more than 500,000 Americans came to the square city to do their military service here. The "Benjamin Franklin Village", located in the Käfertal district, was the largest residential area with around 10,000 Americans at the end and was practically a small American city within the city. So that the soldiers could at least alleviate their wanderlust somewhat in culinary terms, Benjamin's American Diner, also named after Benjamin Franklin, one of the founding fathers of the USA and co-signer of the American Declaration of Independence, was opened in 2006 on the eastern edge of the "Benjamin Franklin Village" (on Gorxheimer Strasse right next to the busy B38). For years, this has been a Mannheim institution when it comes to hamburgers, ribs and pancakes. I had only heard of it before, but that was about to change... From the outside, the partially lit diner, which is located directly on the street, looked quite "retro". Its logo with the exaggeratedly smiling waitress balancing a well-filled tray of "quick food" in her hand was very reminiscent of the 50s/60s, the golden age of the spread of the American bourgeoisie. Finding a parking space proved to be no easy task. Finally, we found an open space in the adjacent residential area where we could park the car properly. It was a pleasantly warm October evening and a few guests were still sitting on the sun-shaded outdoor terrace. However, we preferred to dine inside the two-story property, as it was supposed to get cool in autumn later in the evening. I couldn't help but think that from the outside, the place looked rather out of place. It would have looked much better next to an American highway. Maybe back then, when Americans still came and went here, it was a completely different attitude to life that was conveyed there. As an alternative to the usual franchise giants McDo and BK, it is certainly a popular place for meatball buddies with an affinity for BBQ and a penchant for highly sugary US drinks. In today's world, when trendy grill bastions are vying for the position of "burger master" on every corner - and with quite remarkable qualities and understandable success - such an aging "meat sandwich temple" from the "occupation period" does have a certain anachronistic charm, but it also has the musty deep-fryer fumes of the eternally yesterday, quintessentially American fast food culture that can no longer really lure anyone out from behind the long bar counter. Except, of course, the young female waitress who greeted us at the entrance with businesslike friendliness – I benevolently interpreted this as “typically American”. As the initiator of this trip to Mannheim was already there and enjoying an ice-cold, homemade lemonade (0.4l for 3.90 euros), her question about our reservation quickly became superfluous. We left the long counter on the right and the red, imitation leather-covered diner benches – which together with a table in the middle form the so-called “diner booth” – to the left and moved through the dimly lit interior of the dining room to the rear compartment. “Compartment” because it felt as if we were sitting in a spacious train carriage and looking out through the window front onto the evening Highway B38. It was definitely not uncomfortable in “Benjamins”. There wasn't really much going on that evening, which unfortunately meant that our waitress stopped coming to see us very often. At least at the beginning, she was motivated and present. Later, when we had finished our meal and would have liked to order a drink or two, she was surprisingly scarce. There were several laminated sheets with the menu on the table. The "Special Menu of the Month" was also in a wipe-clean plastic cover. Apparently they didn't trust the Corona peace yet or were still stuck in the easily disinfectable pandemic mode. Wow, what was printed on the monthly menu in words and pictures made me smile a little. "New Orleans Jerk Chicken" (= mean chicken wings with "jerk marinade") and a burger with the catchy name "Jackfruit Joe" immediately caught my eye. A "Camembert Royale Burger" (with cranberry sauce, of course) was also listed in the monthly menu. For people who think that after calorie intake comes before calorie intake, there were even a few sugar attacks in the form of carrot cake and apple pie milkshake. The colleague who is blessed with the greatest portion of food humor of all of us unashamedly took advantage of this obscure-sounding monthly offer and later ordered the "Bavarian Bliss Burger". What was on his "pretzeled" meatball roll would have enriched any story from the Paulaner garden. Even without wheat beer yoga. Speaking of wheat beer, first we had to curb our thirst, which was no big problem with a Grevensteiner Landbier on tap (0.5l for 4.90 euros), a bottle of Corona beer (0.33l for 3.90 euros), a Salitos beer mix drink (0.33l for 3.90 euros) and a homemade lemon soda (0.4l for 3.90 euros). Over the course of the evening, a bottle of Budweiser, two Coke Zeros, another Salitos and three more Mexican pandemic beers were added. I stuck with the naturally cloudy Grevensteiner on tap. You usually can't go wrong with that. The spare ribs (13.90 euros) coated in BBQ or Louisiana hot sauce were to be the pre-program, along with a selection of appetizers ("Appetizer Sampler", 13.20 euros). Since we couldn't agree on a sauce for the rib rack and we were pretty hungry from the long drive, we ordered them once with sweet and smoky BBQ sauce and once with spicy salsa. That should be enough snacks for now, because we still had a lot to do. The two men sitting opposite me had picked out two special burgers ("Our Specials"). The "Angus Burger" made from organically raised Irish beef, with bacon, Gouda, melted onions, mushrooms and the usual bouquet of meatballs, came to a smooth 13.90 euros without a side of fries. The fried potato sticks cost an additional 3.80 euros. The "Double Cheese Mac" (12.90 euros) of the man next to him had, in addition to his two 125g patties, a double portion of cheddar, onions and a cheddar cheese sauce as an addition to the standard equipment (lettuce, cucumber, tomato). After eating the mixed starter platter - they were anything but crispy - he swapped his potato wedges for plain fries. But he later paid the higher price for the wedges (4.90 euros) anyway... In comparison, the presentation of the completely normal cheeseburger (8.90 euros) from the classic range that the man at the other end of the table had chosen sounded almost frugal. My direct neighbour was not at all ordinary, but rather cocky, and - as already mentioned - he did not even shy away from the "Bavarian Bliss Burger" (11.90 euros). Take a pretzel bun, spread mayonnaise on the base and then top it with the usual garnish of lettuce leaves, tomato, cucumber and onion. Now the standard 180 gram patty (standard size at Benjamins) is placed on top after sufficient grill contact. So far - so ordinary. But then a good portion of Obazda is smeared on the hot patty, which is just a delight ("bliss"). And while you're at it, the whole thing is topped with fried bacon. Then the pretzel lid is put on and decorated with two pretzel sticks as crunchy antennae. You can attach bone-dry mini pretzels from the bag to these. Whether this is really art in the "burger building" is for others to judge. I was tempted by the Philly Cheese-Steak Sandwich (11.50 euros), which I had heard, seen and read a lot about. I just had to grab it. And the combination of thinly sliced roast beef, melted onions, melted cheddar and peppers in ciabatta bread didn't sound too bad on paper. The fact that potato chips would also be part of the mix didn't bother me. So nothing stood in the way of the first Philly Cheese-Steak Sandwich of my life. The average cheeseburger aspirant also ordered a small side salad (4.90 euros). The Frikadellen-Fuzzy, who relied on Bavarian delight, rounded off the culinary “Western of yesteryear” that was about to start with nasty-sounding Cheesy Fries (5.40 euros), a landscape of chips baked with cheese and garnished with jalapenos and bacon. If you don’t mind the Obazda on your burger, you might regret your fries! At least that was my thought when I ordered his dubious-sounding “side order”. Our digestion was tested right from the start with several “greetings” from the deep fryer. The dull chicken wings, soggy potato wedges and tasteless onion rings in batter from our appetizer sampler were awakened from their “convenience-ion” freezer sleep in a hot bath of fat. A few bone-dry nachos from the bag were also on the menu. A small piece of rib and three different sauces (BBQ, sour cream and salsa) completed this not particularly attractive selection of common American appetizers. These fatty ready-made products also failed to provide any real information on the palate in terms of taste. "Bonjour, la graisse!" across the board. My experienced BBQ companion from back then would probably have fled immediately at the sight of them. We, on the other hand, were heading straight for fried doom. Everything in the "rib" - on Benjamin's "ship"?! At the same time as this confession of pre-feeding, we received two impressive racks of spare ribs covered in the two sauces mentioned above, including crunchy, dry polenta blocks and cole slaw carelessly stuffed into a bowl. Their presentation alone left a lot to be desired visually. The pork ribs that had been beaten through the convection oven were unfortunately anything but juicy. I would like to say at this point that "grilled to death tastes better!" But that was definitely not the case. Of course, the pre-cooked spare ribs were edible. The spicy salsa and the smoky-sweet BBQ sauce, both blessed with a strong brandy vinegar content, helped the rather timidly "rubbed" spare ribs to come out on top in terms of taste and at least made them not look "dry like a cement bag". These dry ribs were more than a St. Louis cut away from juicy grilled specimens from the smoker. There was a general consensus at the table on that. OK, we first had to digest the range of sloppily served starter dishes - in two ways. I have rarely been so close to whiskey on the rocks after a starter. But we were not given much time to process it internally. The waitress immediately started her burger offensive. The Benjamin meatballs, most of which were wrapped in sticky sesame buns, were not all served on plates, but some of them in small baskets. These were served on red and white checked paper napkins together with the fries. Only the fine Mr. Brezelburger came in a very lavish way on porcelain. The Bavarians, after all… Inconspicuous in appearance, mundane in terms of their decoration, these were not completely failed meatball missteps, but there were no real "wow effects" either. They were simply not juicy enough. You could tell straight away that the patties were not handmade. Judging by their consistency, we were dealing with industrially manufactured ready-made products. Anyone who likes grainy, fluffy meatballs was disappointed by their compactness. The flat meat patties could also have been fried a little more sharply. The roasted aromas were very limited. On the other hand, the meat taste was quite present, which made us overlook the lack of juiciness a little. The cheesy fries that my colleague wanted to share with us (why?...) looked like they had come straight from mom's microwave. Anyone who likes dry fries under a greasy cheese topping with a hidden bacon bit and hot chili peppers would certainly have enjoyed the carelessly arranged potato desecration. The pretzel burger with pretzel antlers not only looked grotesque, it was also a rather modest means of satisfying the taste buds, as my table neighbor confirmed. The idea of the Obazda cream didn't really work. And the salty pretzels scattered across the plate didn't make the monthly special any better. Overall, the burger creation seemed neither coherent nor properly thought through. "What a waste of money!" the great Gerhard would have ranted at this point. My Philly cheese-steak sandwich came to the plate with (it felt like) half a pack of Chio chips. Left and right, melted onions, pieces of bell pepper and shreds of beef oozed out of the ciabatta bread that was toasted on the inside. The first impression was positive despite the overkill of crispy potato slices, but this could not be verified by the taste when I took the first bite of the cheesy steak sandwich. The sizzled shreds of meat were not worthy of beef. They tasted of practically nothing. I also did not find their consistency particularly pleasant to eat. Given the below-average quality of the meat, the sweet braised onions and the spicy melted cheddar mixture inside the bun were no longer really igniting. Well, at least the grilled, warm ciabatta bread was pleasantly fluffy and the chips were nice and crispy. Apparently the burger portions were not filling enough for some people at the table. This is the only way I can explain the two sweet calorie bombs - carrot cake with apricot and cream (5.20 euros) and the "legendary" chocolate cake called "Devil's Food Cake" (4.90 euros) - for dessert, which two food fellas devoured at the end. I was amazed and the mere sight of them tempted me to drink 2cl of ouzo afterwards. Well, what a convivial evening it was in the best atmosphere. The weaker the culinary performance, the better the mood at the table - a curiosity that we have experienced before in this group. We didn't even ask ourselves whether the American food we ate here was worth the trip to Mannheim. It was far too fun an evening for that, and with a good portion of food humor and the odd alcoholic drink, it did have its funny side. But no one really needs to come to this diner that has fallen out of time for the food. You won't find the "best burger in Mannheim" here, nor will you find a delicious Philly cheese-steak sandwich. The other dishes, which are mainly fished out of the depths of the freezer, are also offered in better quality in any food truck. The relaxed, authentic atmosphere of the shop remains the only real incentive for "diehards" to come here. For us, this burger trip to Mannheim was a culinary, educational “Western of yesteryear” that not only made the meatball-loving people at the table smile for a long time.

It was my wife and I's first time there with our two children, but it won't be the last. We'll be back. The hamburgers, fries, drinks, everything was delicious. The staff were very friendly and the food was great. Keep it up.

Homemade peanut butter banana shake – simply great!
The burgers are extremely tasty! The four of us each had a different one and we were all delighted. Unfortunately, the fries weren't that good. Some of them had been in the fryer for too short a time. What a pity. We would have liked to have had another starter plate, but unfortunately they were sold out. For dessert we had the warm chocolate brownie, which was too sweet for us, and the peanut butter banana shake, which tasted just mega-galactically good. I had reserved online, and everything went smoothly!

Ok at this point I've attended a reservation purchased on AT by a friend and sold a reservation personally. Both worked pretty smoothly, nothing sketchy about it. A few areas for improvement including a way to more directly communicate between buyers and sellers, but the app always seems to be in development. AT customer support is really(!) responsive and helpful too if you have questions!

Whose name will my reservation be under when I arrive at the venue?
It can be under your name or a name you choose! Some reservation offers already include the AppointmentTrader Transfer Service which will transfer the reservation in to your name. If its not included you can add it on after buying the reservation for a small fee. One thing on that though: As many reservations become available at last minute, taking a reservation in someone else name is quick and great for privacy. Most reservations on AT are listed with a virtual phone number, so all you need to do is present the phone number at the hostess stand and you are good to go!
Payouts Blocked Because of Sell Through Rate
Does anyone know how AT plans to handle cases where a seller is quitting the platform but has a sell through rate <25%? The error message I got said to fill more bids or find other ways to increase the rate.
Is AT really going to block sellers from withdrawing their money? Especially revenue made before the sell through rate was introduced??

Once the reservation is in your portfolio, you definitely own the timeslot, the review team would not have approved the trade if the reservation wasn't confirmed - so you are going :-) Judging from your post you bid today and are going tomorrow - don't worry as long as you initiated the name transfer, you are good - the transfer service has to work with the opening hours of the reservation team of the respective venue. You will likely see the transfer confirmation a couple hours before your reservation time.
Where do the Reservations on AppointmentTrader come from?
Mostly from people who don't need their reservations or appointments any longer. AT has no relationship with places listed and acts as a platform connecting buyers and sellers making sure that listed reservations are real and that privacy is not compromised when transacting.
What happens if my bid expires unanswered?
Hey @FluffyStar64, thanks for the question! When you place your bid the amount gets transferred in a deposit account, the second you either cancel your bid or a few minutes after the bid expires the funds are moved back into your main account from where you can refund it to your payment method or use for other transactions.
