Barranco Zürich Reviews from The Last Year
Unfriendly chef of service
We wanted to spend a nice evening among friends. We even gave our table to the next shift of guest so that we could continue drinking at the bar in peace. Surprisingly, the chef asked us to leave after we had spent more than 600 dollars. I am really surprised that there are restaurants that refuse to do business with willing and decent people . The night was still young (10pm) and we flew to a Raygroski nearby, staff overthere were much friendlier and accepted us and our money.
International fusion cuisine with a few Peruvian accents
We really liked the restaurant, it is cosy and harmoniously furnished and the murals support the relaxed atmosphere. The staff is friendly and approachable. Anyone expecting a "modern Peruvian restaurant" may be disappointed in terms of the food: apart from a few details, the kitchen doesn't really have much to do with Peruvian cuisine. The Peruvian classics, including modern interpretations of them, are almost completely missing. At least the Pisco Sour to start with and the fried corn are well made, although the Sour could use a little more Pisco. Both the ceviche and the crudo dish are very nicely and invitingly presented, but in terms of taste, despite various foams and sauces, they are completely flat and characterless. Of course, you don't necessarily have to serve a Peruvian ceviche, but a little salt and enough lemon juice or leche de tigre are somehow part of it. And a ceviche made from pikeperch that is not macerated with lemon juice beforehand is not ceviche, it is more reminiscent of sashimi. The Brioche de Aji is an interesting idea, beautifully made, but you can't taste any Aji and it's too sweet to accompany the food. On the other hand, the Langostinos and the Bacalao are very good, perfectly aromatic and prepared, both of which are highly recommended! What also caught our attention is the extremely extensive wine list, which seems rather unusual when it comes to Peruvian cuisine. The people present certainly seem to like it; lots of bottles of wine are ordered and their faces are full of satisfaction. In conclusion: if you're not expecting Peruvian classics and would like to enjoy a good bottle of wine with the fusion cuisine on offer, this is the place for you!
St. Valentine
Not so happy the first time. The seating was very close together, so it was very noisy and you couldn't really enjoy the food. We had the surprise menu and were happy with the different courses. The staff were very nice and attentive. But we had to wait a long time between courses ambience: too loud price/performance: expensive recommendable: only in summer
Creative and harmonious ....
.... is what I would call the food. It is not "just" Peruvian, but fusion cuisine at its finest. Kimchi gives the Fragola Sarda a special twist, or the pear is marinated with lemongrass, almost becoming a new type of fruit. The whole concept lets you try several courses and is reminiscent of the tapas culture, although on a completely different level in terms of price and quality. The harmony of each composition impressed me. There is, however, a small downside: a Pisco Sour, undoubtedly a simple drink with inexpensive ingredients, costs 16 francs, administered in homeopathic doses. The wines are also extremely expensive. While you can still appreciate the creativity and effort in the food, the drinks are pure margin, which leaves a somewhat stale aftertaste. Conclusion: There are so many boring menus in Zurich; the Barranco, on the other hand, is one of the few places in Zurich where you can still be surprised by the culinary delights.
Unimpressive food, small portions, high prices
I’ve visited the place several times over the years and I saw how it declined. First of all, you don’t need to ask people for credit cards as it was not full on the night we were. Then indeed your portions have shrunk to such an extent that you basically have only a bite on a sharing concept. Not to mention that they were nothing special. You can eat way better ceviche in other places in Zurich. The desert was also tasteless and the cocktails the smallest possible. Lastly, don’t sit inside as the noise is killing. I could ignore it when the food was good but in the current combination it is just the tip of the iceberg. It was genuinely my last time and the Michelin guide should take measures and adjust their review accordingly.
Intriguing and comforting
Had a last minute decision dinner here with my boyfriend. The service was overall very good, friendly and profession waiters, we arrived 20 minutes before the closing time for the kitty but we’re still able to order and eat peacefully. We ordered 5 plates to share, Asparagus Cauliflower Eggplant Chicharrones White fish I have to say everything was really really good, the balance of flavors in every plate was very well achieved, between spicy, sour and spices and the use of creamier textures to soften the sapidity. We especially found remarkable the cream of jalapeños and the chicharrones, definitely the best ones I have ever had. As for the dessert we shared the celery taint, not a personal favorite but definitely interesting. 10/10 would recommend

It can be under your name or a name you choose! Some reservation offers already include the AppointmentTrader Transfer Service which will transfer the reservation in to your name. If its not included you can add it on after buying the reservation for a small fee. One thing on that though: As many reservations become available at last minute, taking a reservation in someone else name is quick and great for privacy. Most reservations on AT are listed with a virtual phone number, so all you need to do is present the phone number at the hostess stand and you are good to go!
