The real Mediterranean diet
Bar Vlaha defies the stereotypes of a Mediterranean diet based on fish and seafood. Instead, this is the cuisine from the interior of the country that celebrates roasted meat and vegetables. You won't find moussaka, gyros, pastitsio here. We started our meal with two delicious spreads accompanied by hearty house made bread. The eggplant spread was spicy and flavorful while the yellow fava spread was almost identical to ones I've tasted in Greece. The four warm meat-stuffed dolmades were hand-made treasure and quickly disappeared from our table. A generous portion of charcoal grilled lamb chops was easily shared by four. Likewise, a huge pot of stewed pork shoulder and spiced noodles was a favorite at our table. A kitchen mistake brought an order of duck breast in a sour cherry sauce to us. It was tender but out of character with the rest of the meal. The sauteed vegetable and lemon potatoes were disappointing compared the rest of the dishes. Everything was washed down with two modestly priced bottles of Assyrtiko. Bar Vlaho is a small, simple, but sincere restaurant in Brookline. The staff is definitely honoring the heritage of the mountain people of Greece.

The restaurant has a nice feel, however the food is very overpriced for what it is; servers rushed to clear off the table without asking if we were done eating. Vegetarian options are unbalanced and lack protein or flavor.

Bar Vlaha has become my favorite restaurant of the year 2023! Food was so unique and delicious! Service was so attentive! I would always go back for an evening dine out or even special occasion celebration.
Be the first to ReplyFantastic!
I'm so glad this restaurant has come to Brookline; we need more diverse cuisines. We made reservations and had to wait a few months, but it was so worth it! Delicious food, great service, and they remembered it was a special occasion and gave us complimentary champagne!! I've been thinking about the Kokkinisto ever since, and can't wait to go back for it again, and to try other dishes. Perfect spot for friends and dates.
Be the first to ReplyNew Greek food in Brookline with delicious flavor!
We celebrated our anniversary here. The food was amazing! A few of our favorites were the mushrooms, the slow cooked meat, the feta and pepper spread, and the baklava dessert. The flavors were so fresh and clean. We loved the fresh chives and dill added to some dishes. The food came out hot and delicious! We will be back!

The same group that developed Greco and Krasi Wine Bar also opened Bar Vlaha. I expected it to be good and it is, more rustic in style than Krasi. Food is delicious, wonderful menu, and friendly and attentive service. We loved everything we ordered - the dips and bread; fried mushrooms; Greek salad, roasted chicken and rib eye steak. And the baklava with almonds was the perfect ending. Highly recommend
Be the first to ReplyGo for the martini and lamb chops!
Loved this spot. Started with a wonderful martini (very cold and very dry) then Greek salad with local fresh tomatoes and yummy feta and fried mushrooms with capers. Grilled lamb chops, lemon potatoes and kale/spinach combo were all on point. Setting was lively but not too loud. Staff friendly were but not overbearing. Wish we had room for dessert...next time.
Be the first to ReplyNot as extraordinary as hyped but still a very delicious meal
I checked out Bar Vlaha, what Eater described as “…what may be the first restaurant in the U.S. to celebrate the food of the Vlachs, an ethnic group of nomadic shepherds in northern and central Greece” This warned me not to get excited for my usual favorites: spanakopita or moussaka. However, it got me excited, expecting to experience something new and different…which the meal was not. Generally still familiar dishes and flavors but everything we tried were good. I am definitely coming back to try more dishes off their grill. Lamb chops were excellent. Service was also excellent and I absolutely loved the staff—from the moment we were seated; the server’s knowledge of the menu, efficiency and just the right temperature of friendliness. Be the first to ReplyOutstanding New Restaurant
Lovely restaurant in Brookline. Glasses, water pitchers, plates all add a nice touch. Open kitchen with a chef's table. Service is outstanding. Drink menu is creative, and wine is good. Now to the food....phenomenal. Spreads were wonderful - spicy whipped feta, goat cheese, taramosalata, all great and good size portions. Home made bread with goat milk butter. Mushrooms were to die for. Lamb chops perfectly grilled with an onion relish and lemon. Dessert was also fantastic. Would go back in a second. Truly went to the top of my list, along with La Campania, Toscano, Ma Maison and Tambo 22.....a pretty eclectic mix of styles and restaurants.
