Baobab Fare Detroit Reviews from The Last Year
I don't go out of my comfort zone too often but the food
I don't go out of my comfort zone too often but the food was terrific. Everything we had was very good. The food arrived very quick and all servers were very nice

I stumbled upon Baobab Fare on Yelp a few weeks ago when visiting Detroit and saw that it had 5 stars. This instantly made me curious. After googling the restaurant's menu & plates (which looked amazing), I saw that the owner (Mamba Hamissi) is a Chopped champion. I decided to order takeout from here and let me tell you - I am still in awe of the dish I had (the Samaki). The flavors were absolutely incredible and each bite left me wanting to more. I highly recommend this dish as it is their most popular one. Though I cannot speak on the other dishes, the Samaki was easily one of the best plates of food I had in a while and I would be surprised if the others don't match! I cannot wait to go back!!
I was so impressed with the food that I cannot believe how
I was so impressed with the food that I cannot believe how delicious it was, my lamb shank fell off the bone. The rice was cooked to perfection. I love the plantains and the corn salad post the beans made it delicious too. I ate every bit of it a little bit of the corn, but I was not wanting to eat corn for dietary reasons. I have to say the plantain chips with the sauce. Excellent the lemongrass ginger tea was excellent too. I had to say it's the only restaurant in Detroit that was finalist as James Beard award that piece significant for a restaurant that is here in Michigan or like essay in the Detroit area. I would say that if you were in Detroit and you were looking for something different and you wanna taste of East Africa, like Kenya . I found out they also have coffee to sell Brundy coffee imported that is farm direct I talk about good coffee. I was curious about the roaster and I love the packaging. They also have a mini store to pick up souvenirs, it is in the center of the news center area just by Henry Ford Hospital, I have to say the service was very much on point very knowledgeable. I was going to surprise me, but I knew what I wanted. She read my mind. I love the aesthetic about the ambience of the place. It really is done. Well as you can see in my pictures. You'll guess why I post these pictures. It brings out the vision and the story. I think that they are on a mission to prove Detroit is a foodie city and your guest right damn right . I was really wanting to try this place for the longest time. I believe that if you were in the city visiting and you want to go on the wild side, then I would say definitely come here. They have juices too and soda and they have a full bar, serve alcohol. I think it's a great place to meet someone or if you have a date it's very casual and it's not anything too crazy but it's really delicious food. You probably spend about 34 bucks with an appetizer and a drink. If you wanna add more stuff that was 34.90 I didn't think it was expensive to my taste that is fairly reasonable. I mean, they are serving lamb shank they're serving all kinds of cool stuff. I think this is a very cool place and it's does is said to be done that brings out African flavors. They do have hot sauces to dip in. I think it was really just something that I should have tried when they opened . I also think that the area is opening different places, not as far as like baobab fair, I just see that a lot of things are happening in Detroit and with new restaurants opening up every single day I will please say that this was a good choice. I had other choices I could've went to, but I would want something different and this is probably the most different place I can go to, it's an experience
The food is amazing - very flavorful yet not overly salty.
You have a choice of coconut or spiced rice - get half and half. They are both delicious. I got the eggplant option. The other veggie option is a larger serving of the spinach/peanut side that came with my dish. The service was slow towards the end of the meal, and there seemed to be several staff not very busy hanging around the coffee bar. That's the only reason I didn't give 5 stars. I've been back already even though it is a long drive from where I live. It's worth it.
First time coming here, though I've had food from Baobab
First time coming here, though I've had food from Baobab Fare at events in the area before. We ate outside as it was a beautiful day. The service was very good and the environment was great. We had their signature beef dish, though I'm forgetting the name. It was flavorful and came with a uniquely prepared spinach and a coconut rice and plantains. I'd say food is a 4.5 star. Pricing is pretty high for lunch at $21 for an entree. But definitely worth trying if you're in the area and like something flavorful and unique.
We came towards closure on Sunday so they already ran out
We came towards closure on Sunday so they already ran out of a few dishes. Nice, pleasant decor, efficient and friendly service. Fish & chicken dishes were very tasty and full of flavor. Nuyambani was good too but meat was a bit tough. And dishes served on a warmer side not hot. Dishes served in cool plates. Recommend!
We have wanted to go here forever.
Went for lunch as soon as they opened at 11am on a Friday for my husbands birthday. The restaurant slowly filled up and the service was INCREDIBLE!!! The food delicious! We loved everything we tried. And the Sambosa appetizer was amazing. If you not been, go!
Absolutely incredible value and amazing food in general.
This establishment should have a Michelin Review at the bare minimum. The culture, aesthetic, and taste are the epitome of Detroit's food scene. The restaurant was extremely busy but service was responsive and friendly. We were treated like family and walked through the history of the restaurant and, upon asking, we got a breakdown of their merchandise. We took home multiple pieces to remember the experience. Baobab has my highest recommendation!

The Baobab Fare food truck was an amazing experience at Michigan Central just finishing their re-opening tour!! What an afternoon and most delicious dinner of their food truck specific menu! Eggplant Chapati w plantains was delicious for an early dinner! Can't wait to get to their brick and mortar!!

Had such a great experience here! The venue is bright and boisterous, full of energy and movement. I was here with a group of seven, and they were able to accommodate us with a reservation ahead of time. I ordered the samaki because I heard from two different people that it was amazing, and it did not disappoint! Everything was so flavorful and delicious, from the plantains to the rice. Portions were also very generous. My only regret was that I couldn't take my leftovers with me, as we were traveling. If I'm ever back in Detroit, I'd definitely come back!
First Time East African
Was a bit leery when a coworker suggested East African food as I had never eaten this cuisine before. But he was driving and paying so I was in. Place is smaller but is nicely decorated and has a good vibe. Staff very friendly. I ordered JI Passion Fruit to drink. Like a cross between mango and pineapple without pineapple’s excessive sweetness and “thickness”, very refreshing. For my meal I ordered KUMUHANA which is marinated grilled chicken with coconut rice, corn salad, fried plantains, and stewed yellow beans. Not a fan of the beans, but everything else was very good. Parking is on street and can be tricky, but this place is worth it.
awesome!
on Stephanie's recommendation i ordered the nyumbani, which i found to be delicious. the meat was tender, the plantains reminded me of what i would get in cuban restaurants and the spinach was great. i finished it off with a latte and brought home a bag of their coffee beans. will definitely go back on my next trip to Detroit.
I've been wanting to try out Baobab Fare since December.
I finally had time before catching my flying home to stop by. I went for lunch around 12:40 today. Inside is beautiful, great music, friendly vibe. The team greeted me and the server was personable and very kind. I wish I could say my food experience was just as amazing, it was meh. I ordered the Samaki. It was beautifully plated. The fish was warm at best. The rice was about the same. The beans were warmer but not at an expected temperature for food coming out the kitchen. The beans were flavorful. Seasoning was perfect. The plantains were fresh and hot. I love plantains and they were perfect. I would have advised the server that my food was cold but not sure where they went. They disappeared for a good while, at least 10 minutes. I had to get up to order the Tamu and request the check. The Tamu! Is so good. Order it! I will definitely try them again next month. I am hoping that this was a one off experience. I would encourage everyone to try out this restaurant.

We love everything about Baobab Fare! Service was spot on, food was beyond amazing and restaurant is nice. We did have a short wait, but well worth it. I'm looking forward to going back for another tasty meal.

After a wonderful play at the Fisher Theatre, we walked to Baobab Fare to try out a restaurant with nearly consistent raved reviews on all platforms. It did not disappoint. As our friend exclaimed, "This dining experience takes our outing to a whole new level". I began with a spiced coffee and thoroughly enjoyed its rich, spicy and aromatic qualities. The frothy oat milk was the perfect accompaniment. The food....OMG.....I can't stop daydreaming about it. Everything was divine. Each dish was so flavorful and perfectly cooked, yet not at all spicy or overpowering. Our vegetarian friend had the dish that included all veggie sides. It looked and smelled amazing. She loved it. We sampled their fish and goat dishes. Perfection. You know that feeling where what you see, smell and taste all come together and their union was divine? Ya..... so good. Dessert was also well worth the experience. They were out of their mango coconut dessert yet the other two options were thoroughly enjoyed. Rich, cool, smooth, sweet, tangy.... Perfect. We challenged our wait staff with questions, ambivalence, asking for substitutions and cashing out then going back for dessert. Not a problem. They were gracious, polite, helpful and efficient. Be prepared to add a nice tip. These people deserve it. The small restaurant remained busy during our stay. We were seated and needed to flag down a server to get the ball rolling, but all was wonderful thereafter. Our food came quickly, was visually enticing and we were checked on often. The ambience was urban, cool, cheery and steeped in a feeling of community. I wish there were an option to add bonus stars. Baobab would definitely deserve highest recognition. The tab? Who knows? I would have paid any amount they charged, happily. Needless to say, we are returning.... Often!
A beautiful awesome day amazing people of the world.
Today, we try out East African food at Baobab Fare in downtown Detroit. Now, do I know anything about East African food? No. But we're here, we're hungry AF, and let's give the food a go shall we. First off, we have the fish dish called Samaki. It had the corn, plantains, and coconut rice. The plate was ok. It didn't really quite give me that OMG feeling that I was looking for. Then there's the eggplant dish called Intore. This was definitely a lot better than the fish dish. If you're about a vegetarian plate, this is a wonderful dish for you. Now we're on to the desserts, The Tamura, which is a passion fruit and avocado that's an explosion in the mouth. The other dessert is the Coco Mango, which was also an amazing dessert as well. Anywho, this place is totally dope. Everyone should give this spot a try and lemme know what you think. Gimme a follow as well for more foodie adventure. Thank you so much for reading my review. I hope this helps with your decision-making experience. Enjoy your awesome yelptastic day!
Mboga is one of the best meals I've had in Detroit.
I've had it several times, and I prefer the delicious spiced rice pilau over the coconut rice, which is more similar to just normal white rice. The staff have always been super kind, the turnaround time on an order is always ridiculously fast, and it's just a really cool ambience in there. My only criticism is the small number of vegan options. If there were a couple more vegan options I would eat there way more often so I could rotate dishes. I've had the Intore and the Mboga, and those are the vegan main options with Mboga being my favorite. The side of fried plantains were delicious and had vegan sauces for dipping, and I've had good drinks including the hibiscus and African tea.
I stopped in for lunch with a friend.
Best decision ever!! The warm colors, wonderful decor, and soothing music give this restaurant a welcoming atmosphere. We arrived minutes after they opened. We were seated immediately. Stephanie answered our questions and took our order. Our drinks came out quick and the food followed. Everything was delicious! Everything!! If you haven't already visited, make it a priority! Street metered parking
This was our second time coming to the restaurant and the
This was our second time coming to the restaurant and the second time the mango dessert was not available. Just like my initial visit I ordered online and when I got there the dessert was sold out. Update: they had one of the three ordered. The goat was dry this time it needed some sauce on it, the beef was the size of the palm of my child's hand, and the chicken leg was small. Disappointed that the portions changed for the price. I bragged about the goat to my mom because the first time I had it was very good. I will not go back for a while and will see if the food quality comes back up. Too bad I have been bragging about their food since I had it last month.
We had chicken, beef and fish, everything was delicious.
The service is great. Beautiful restaurant.
Delicious and interesting dishes
Delicious food. Lot of use of nuts. We tried all the meat/dish dishes which were tasty and tender. The guacamole dessert was interesting and very nice. Only issue is it's very busy and seating is limited. Would highly recommend this place.
This came as a recommendation from a co-worker.
I'd never have African food before but now I'm in love. I had the NYUMBANI which was delicious! The tomato sauce they put on top I asked for a side to take home. The coconut and spiced rice was delicious; I got half and half. Why have one when you can have both! The fried plantains were crispy on the outside and sweet on the inside. I added the corn salad which was a nice refreshing element had diced cucumbers in it. Reminded me of a cold elote salad. The warm spices were perfect. I had spiced coffee which was delicious. My coworkers each had different things One had the eggplant dish one had the goat and two had the chicken. All loved their food. I will DEF be back. The atmosphere is very open and eerie it's on the corner of two streets so it's all windows so it feels very open and breathable. They sell their passion fruit drink and some clothing some dark chocolate and some other items to go. The customer service was fantastic. There was always someone within sight to get assistance and he came back often and asked if we needed anything additional. We didn't. For my first experience with African food I am super pleased and very impressed. Yum!

A delightful experience for the senses! The ambience is bright and cheery. The staff are warm and welcoming. The fragrance gets your mouth watering and of course the TASTE is what we come for!! Delicious. Flavorful. Distinctive and truly a delightful experience.
Great Food and Service
Cozy, warm place with excellent food and service! We had a gift card that did not work on-line but they quickly honored it with out a problem. Food was excellent! Service too! Would be nice if they had Tusker Beer and wine!
Authentic African cuisine in Detroit!
Excellent service and food. Authentic and tasty fare from E Africa - anything rice and chicken is very good. Goat was delicious too!

Great Service - amazing dinner!!
Read about the site in NYT and bought a reservation at Mother Wolf in LA 2 days later. Worked great and the food was amazing!!!
Worked perfectly!
Got the reservation (that I couldn't get anywhere else) and was able to entertain a group of friends at the infamous Bern's Steakhouse.
Got into Nobu Malibu
Wonderful! My parents are visiting and we have wanted to go to Nobu Malibu for years. I tried getting a reservation myself but it was next to impossible. So glad I was able to buy a reservation on appointment trader for a decent price!
Very easy
Was very hesitant going into this experience but am glad to say that it worked out very well ! will definitely use appointment trader in the future
Fabulous Lunch
I was veeeeeerry skeptical that this would work, particularly at a restaurant as hard to get into as Nobu Malibu, and it was perfect! We had lunch outside on the patio and it was fabulous!
Great reviewer team
Just wanted to take a second to shout out the reviewer team. Even though they probably review hundreds of listings and bids a day, they still take the time to leave great comments and respond relatively quickly. Thanks!
Incredible
I got a reservation to Don Angie, which I've been trying to book for weeks! I am very happy with this service.
Best platform out there!
Super simple, easy, and fast to secure reservations for hard-to-get restaurants and locations!

Worked well, got me into a restaurant with no availability

Last minute reservation for Delilah Las Vegas
Got a last minute reservation, dinner for 2 at Delilah Las Vegas: super impressed! The process was simple, transaction seamless. We had an amazing time! Couldn’t be happier! 😍
It works!
Ok at this point I've attended a reservation purchased on AT by a friend and sold a reservation personally. Both worked pretty smoothly, nothing sketchy about it. A few areas for improvement including a way to more directly communicate between buyers and sellers, but the app always seems to be in development. AT customer support is really(!) responsive and helpful too if you have questions!
Money transfer
As a seller, I like the fact i have the ability now to transfer money out of my AT account and into a bank account. Makes getting the money much easier then the process before.
Love this app
Got to go to places otherwise unreachable
Easy Access
Very easy to get into one of the hardest restaurants to reserve in New York.
Whose name will my reservation be under when I arrive at the venue?
It can be under your name or a name you choose! Some reservation offers already include the AppointmentTrader Transfer Service which will transfer the reservation in to your name. If its not included you can add it on after buying the reservation for a small fee. One thing on that though: As many reservations become available at last minute, taking a reservation in someone else name is quick and great for privacy. Most reservations on AT are listed with a virtual phone number, so all you need to do is present the phone number at the hostess stand and you are good to go!
Payouts Blocked Because of Sell Through Rate
Does anyone know how AT plans to handle cases where a seller is quitting the platform but has a sell through rate <25%? The error message I got said to fill more bids or find other ways to increase the rate.
Is AT really going to block sellers from withdrawing their money? Especially revenue made before the sell through rate was introduced??
Tune into NBC News - Top Story Tonight 7:40p ET
Let’s go. Get more people placing bids!
I will give you 50% of ALL of my PROFITS if you teach me how to make profits?
LOL. Thank you The New Yorker.
Appointment
Transferring reservations is not supported in AT. Why not just use the name in the AT screenshot?
Buyers interested in Bern's Steakhouse: PLEASE READ
Same goes for 4 Charles and I Sodi
Prepaid Reservation Fee
Agreed. Ultimately not addressing this month after month is clearly resulting in a drop in certain venue’s rankings & sales.
Congrats on 3 mil
🍾🍾🍾🍾🍾🍾🧨🧨🧨 now on to 30 mill!
Need to cancel a bid, not getting a response… how do I do it?
Click on "Take off the Market Option" in your portfolio
Working on your bid?
Your bid has been “matched” with a reservation. From the time a reservation has been located, the seller of the reservation must connect with moderator to give transfer information for reservation. If the seller;however, does NOT respond to reservation transfer, then your bid is reprocessed and returns to the first step, which is connecting your request to a reservation.
Process after bid is accepted.
Hey @EvocativeFold67, welcome to appointmenttrader! Once the reservation is in your portfolio, you definitely own the timeslot, the review team would not have approved the trade if the reservation wasn't confirmed - so you are going :-) Judging from your post you bid today and are going tomorrow - don't worry as long as you initiated the name transfer, you are good - the transfer service has to work with the opening hours of the reservation team of the respective venue. You will likely see the transfer confirmation a couple hours before your reservation time.
Where do the Reservations on AppointmentTrader come from?
Mostly from people who don't need their reservations or appointments any longer. AT has no relationship with places listed and acts as a platform connecting buyers and sellers making sure that listed reservations are real and that privacy is not compromised when transacting.
What happens if my bid expires unanswered?
Hey @FluffyStar64, thanks for the question! When you place your bid the amount gets transferred in a deposit account, the second you either cancel your bid or a few minutes after the bid expires the funds are moved back into your main account from where you can refund it to your payment method or use for other transactions.
