Animae San Diego Reviews from The Last Year
We had the most incredible birthday dinner here I couldn't
We had the most incredible birthday dinner here I couldn't recommend this place more! We were visiting from Sf, where we have amazing food, and this is right up there with one of my favorite restaurants! It's pricey, but you get what you pay for with the service, food quality and ambiance. A must visit if you're visiting Sd!
Offensively Small Portions Delicious food but portion
Offensively Small Portions Delicious food but portion sizing was surprisingly disappointing, especially considering the very high price point. Ordered more than expected for a party of 4, paid over $450 pre tax, and still walked out hungry. Similar caliber restaurants in San Diego leave you full and still bringing home plenty of leftovers at the same price and ordered item quantity: Rare Society, Cowboy Star, Seneca, Callie, etc. all do a fantastic job on providing realistic portion sizes for the price. It's an INCREDIBLY unsatisfying feeling paying that much for food, only to consider picking up another meal on the way home because you're STILL hungry. This is the only time I have ever experienced such ridiculously small portions leaving you still hungry.

There was four of us for dinner, we made 7:00 reservations, which are needed a couple weeks in advance for a party of three and then we were able to add one more, for a party of four a couple days prior to our reservation. Valet parking is the only way to go was $20, plus tip. Parking lot nearby was more expensive. There's a lovely waiting area nearby when you walk in the door, velvet dark green seating, which was very comfortable. The giant projection behind the bar was amazing. The room itself was set up according to reservations, different size tables throughout. Our waiter. Alex took very good care of us explaining the menu, cocktails and food as it was all of our first time here. We all enjoyed our signature cocktails, which were very unique and delightful. It was definitely a dining experience that we very much enjoyed and would definitely come back and visit again. All dishes were unique and flavorful and there was not one dish that we did not like, my personal favorite dish was the beet salad,, I don't think I took a picture of the Wagyu fried rice that was one of my favorites as well and the short rib was very delicious, but my fillet was too, with the condiments that came along with it. I wish we would've had room for dessert, but unfortunately we did not, we will know better the next time not to order so many dishes. My compliments to the chef as this was a unique dining experience that we will be sure to come back and enjoy again. It was a delightful evening with family.
We Loved loved loved this place.
Do not even hesitate to go there. The ambiance was amazing and suitable for our occasion which was bachelorette dinner. We wanted a round table for 8 and even thought that was not their regular seating, the out a beautiful round table for us. The servers (Alina and Abe) were angels sent from heaven. So nice and very patient and professional. I was telling my friends that they have PHD in this field. I have been to so many fancy restaurants but their service was the best I have ever seen. Alina patiently answered our endless questions and requests with smile on the face. Abe, in the other hand took so many photos of us with us just asking for one. I was amazed. Then the food was great. A little pricy but it was not unexpected for us. The food quality was very good that definitely worth every penny. I am so glad we went there. Please experience it and see for yourself self.
A great experience all around.
Every food dish was carefully crafted and tasted so flavorful. Came with a group of 5 and tried a few starter dishes and entrees and shared everything family style which is what they recommended. The wagyu fried rice and the beet salad had so many flavors that all blended seamlessly together. The New York steak was delicious and perfectly cooked. Vibes were elegant and chic with dim lighting and loud throwback rap music from 90s to 2000s. I definitely enjoyed it but definitely a special occasion type place!
Amazing chef, amazing crew amazing all together.
I love everything here. She even makes the cabbage taste sooo good!!! Love love love XX
I think Animae was our favorite meal in San Diego.
The space is super impressive and I loved the giant Iron Giant projection that was behind the bar. The bar itself made fantastic drinks that I highly recommend. I had a tea-infused gin cocktail with matcha and lemon and it was so good. Our waitress was so wonderful and really gave us amazing recommendations. I loved all her suggestions and I feel like we had the best meal because of it. We opted to split two appetizers: the Taiwanese Chicken with Szechuan peppercorn, hot honey, Thai basil aioli and the Hamachi Tataki with Asian pear, daikon, nori, chogochujang. The Taiwanese Chicken. was so crispy and juicy, with just a small kick. The Hamachi Tataki was super refreshing and tasted super fresh. For my entree, I had one of their new additions, the Ginataan with Salt spring mussel, bay scallop, shrimp, rice cake, and kabocha squash. This was fantastic. It tasted kind of like a squash soup with rice cakes and seafood floating in it. I wish I had like a hundred pieces of bread to soak up the amazing sauce. For dessert, we split the Ube Profiteroles with ube pastry cream, coconut, and cheese tuile. They were filled to the brim with ube cream and so enjoyable. Overall, I really enjoyed my meal at Animae and while it was a little pricey, it was worth it. Kudos to the waitstaff here, they were absolutely amazing!
This is our go to spot in San Diego if we want to eat
This is our go to spot in San Diego if we want to eat something nice. It has a art deco vibe inside but with hints of Japanese anime/culture. The food as always was top notch. It's like a lot of the food I grew up with but taken to another level. This is our 4th time dining here and it's just as good as the other times. The executive chef is a James Beard finalist so you know the food is going to be fire emoji The service was great as usual and the servers always go above and beyond. Funny story saw some influencers taking pics in the dark hallway going towards restroom...umm sorry to interfere but I gotta piss yo!
Finally got to eat here for dinner last week.
All I can say is the experience was amazing. The restaurant is really beautiful and the atmosphere and vibe were cool. They play good music so that was a plus. Now this place was really out of my comfort zone as far as the menu. But I put my fears aside and went for it! I'm so glad I did! The food was like a carnival in my mouth. We ordered ALOT of items and everything I tasted was an Explosion of flavor. Service was also good and everyone was kind and very knowledgeable about the menu. This place is not cheap.. but I definitely recommend a splurge to Try it out.
Food was amazing! Of course fine dining the portions will
Food was amazing! Of course fine dining the portions will always be a little on the smaller side but still delicious. We ordered the Crispy Potatoes, Wagyu Fried Rice, Cucumbers, 16oz Prime New York, and for dessert the Coffee and Calamansi Mousse. All of them were delicious, everything on the table was finished and shared between the 4 of us. The style there is family style, so what is ordered is shared between everyone. The service was amazing as well, unfortunately I left my ID in another person so I couldn't try a drink, but all my friends said the drinks were very good, Midnight in Manila had such strong taro flavors as well. Ambiance was lovely, dark restaurant and good music as well.
Excellent Birthday Dinner
Made a reservation a couple of months ago to visit Animae for a birthday dinner. Very difficult to get a reservation one or two weeks in advance. It was a rare cold and windy evening in San Diego and Animae's decor was warm and inviting. The mgmt must have reacted to past criticisms because the lighting and background music were about right. Animae's cuisine is Asian-fusion with a focus on Filipino food, which is pretty rare, especially outside a few places like San Diego. Be prepared with an open mind (palate) for some novel flavors. Our waitress took our drink order. I decided to go with sparkling wine by the glass knowing that the food would have intense flavors. Turned out to be a good choice. Four people ordered six appetizers and two main courses and shared everything. And we shared some Wagyu steak. All of the dishes were excellently prepared and delicious. Was great to be able to taste 9 dishes. overall, I would say this was too much food for a group our size. My only criticism is that all of the dishes were pretty intensely flavored. Would be good to have a couple of bland dishes to break up the flavors and cleanse the palate. Didn't get to that until we ordered the Yuzu sorbet which was very refreshing. Finally, service was friendly and professional. Dishes arrived at a nice cadence. I would definitely go back.
I really liked the ambiance and service at this place.
The menu was fun and unique. We ordered several dishes to share and while they were good, they were nothing special. The crunchy spicy tuna was a pleasant surprise though so I do recommend that one. And also the roasted cabbage was surprisingly good and buttery. Fun place to fine if you're in town!
It was phenomenal.
The short rib kare kare melts in the mouth. I was scraping the plate to get more. We also had a bottle of Sancere wine, which I butchered the spelling there but that was Delicious. Get out the Gas lamp general area and go here instead. The prices are the same anyway, but taste way better.
Wow.... How to even begin to describe how incredible this
Wow.... How to even begin to describe how incredible this place is! The hospitality was amazing! Everyone was super attentive and friendly! The food was delicious and was very much worth the hype! It is such a great place for any occasion from date night, celebrating a birthday, or just dining out! Special thank you to Matty for the amazing experience! :)
My experience at Animae was phenomenal! Every single dish
My experience at Animae was phenomenal! Every single dish was flavorful & memorable. I even dined here with my toddler and baby, they were very accommodating. My favorite dish was the Kare kare, super tender and melt in your melt good. My family loved their shrimp toast. Everything was unique and all the flavors worked well together. I would definetely dine here again!
My bf and I came here last night for the first time and we
My bf and I came here last night for the first time and we had a great time ^.^ my favorites were the beet salad, cucumber salad, crispy rice, Wagyu fried rice, lamb chops and ube dessert! I wasn't really a huge fan of the bao buns but everything else we had was delicious! Our server Jeffrey was so friendly and sweet too so shoutout to him. We will definitely be back
My fiancé and I finally got the opportunity to come to
My fiancé and I finally got the opportunity to come to Animae after many accolades from our friends. It's located in downtown San Diego, but the only downside is there's almost zero parking. Unless you want to test your luck at the Home Depot parking lot next door, you're paying $20 for their valet. Each dish we ordered was absolutely delicious. Crispy tuna rice - a fun take on the normal crispy rice we'd get at other restaurants. Super delicious and love how crispy it is! Lamb chops - the aioli it came with was delicious and they were cooked to a perfect medium Taiwanese chicken - they didn't mention it was fried chicken but we were surprised about how juicy the chicken was! It had a little cinnamon on the skin as well which was delicious Branzino - probably my least favorite, it was still good but it wasn't as flavorful as I expected it to be Ube profiteroles - so good I can eat them all day long! I love dough and ice cream The server Louie was kind and attentive. It's an up-scale, modern Japanese-fusion restaurant that's great for special occasions and large groups. I was surprised to see it so full on a Monday evening. I'd definitely come back and explore the rest of the menu if I choose to make my way downtown.
New to the area and I think I've discovered my new favorite
New to the area and I think I've discovered my new favorite restaurant . Love the combination of flavors and as well as their unique dishes.
Food: WOW.
WOW. WOW. I seriously was not expecting their food to be this good. This is hands down my favorite restaurant in San Diego now. All their dishes were so flavorful and unique. I cannot think of anything that could have made dishes better. My standouts were the wagyu, short rib, and spicy seabass, but every fish was so delicious you can't go wrong. Their desserts were also delicious by not being overly sweet and all of their flavors working together to create mouthwatering desserts. Hats off to the chef to one of the best meals I've had! Service: Nice and attentive staff. Our server didn't have strong opinions of "must get" dishes as she said that everything was good and she wasn't wrong! Ambiance: Their high end decor was one of a kind. We also got to see the most amazing sunset to finish off our dinner. Great for a special occasion but also suitable for big parties.
A shout out and a big thank you to the person next to me
A shout out and a big thank you to the person next to me who recommended and ordered the Cosmopolitan with Chopin Potato Vodka for me. I got a free drink that was smooth and delicious. Good vibes amongst great folks. Pay it forward.
We were hesitant to come here.
Why? Because being Asian and getting Asian fusion don't always work out well...which we saw in some of the reviews. So our expectations were low. With that said, we thoroughly enjoyed the food and experience here! We ordered dishes that would highlight the Wagyu (cucumber salad, crab fried rice and broccoli) so it all complemented each other rather well. Wagyu was cooked to perfection, but could have been a little warmer when we got it. It was on the lukewarm side. Flavor wise, it was wonderful! Yes, it is $33 (an oz), but we didn't need a lot of it to appreciate the flavor. Wagyu is something I love but too much makes me sick, so 4oz was perfect. The egg dip brought it to another level! The crab fried rice was a great side;, so were the broccoli and cucumber salad. We threw in the lemongrass chicken out of curiosity--it was cooked to perfection and had great flavors. Only hiccup we had with this dish was the carrot purée...that was an awkward addition. Some pickled daikon or watercress salad would have been a better addition. We look forward to coming back to try the other dishes, but will definitely get the Wagyu again.
DARK, LOUD, OVERWRAUGHT AND OVERPRICED
Since the chef's recipes are convoluted, heavy and dense you really need to see what you are eating but the room is so dark it was impossible. (All of the publicity photos are brightly lit with colorful fresh-seeming ingredients and it was simply impossible to tell the Chinese sausage from the beets.) And forget about having a conversation! The room was so loud we ended up having to shout at each other throughout dinner. The feeling of the room is the decor of a large Hyatt Hotel. On the plus side the staff is attentive and especially pleasant. The manager came by the table near the end of the meal and when he saw that I had not eaten even half of the (peanut) oily, (fat) ladened short rib he immediately offered to bring something else and in the end quickly said he would remove it from our bill....so someone in charge of staffing is doing a good job. The restaurant was full with a mix of mostly younger couples and small groups. I hope they all can afford the $150 Wagyu steaks. The chicken was well cooked and moist. The crispy potatoes were lots of things but not crispy. Sadly, tonight's meal was a complete disappointment. PS. Plan ahead. Valet was efficient and cordial but will cost another $25, because there is no place to park.
Must check out place!
Went here with colleagues for the experience. Ambiance was spot on and food was refreshing! A lot of dishes are based on the Filipino cuisine and the chef sure gave it a personalized touch. Everything we ordered were good....especially the short rib kare kare. Now some might say it is overpriced and that you could get one at the usual Filipino restaurant but remember you came here for the whole experience. Meaning ambiance, service and good food and drinks. Just helping to set expectations.
Had a wonderful dining experience!
First off the ambiance upon entering is first rate, beautiful inside. Very classy. Our server was Andrew who was excellent. Very knowledgeable and great with advice…(not the response that everything on the menu is excellent). His suggestions were spot on! The hamachi appetizer was so well done, lots of different flavors that came together beautifully. The branzino could very well have been the best preparation of this fish I have ever had! The octopus was also delicious! Corkage was $35. Highly recommend! We will be returning and I know what I am going to be ordering!
very unsatisfied
I'm sorry to have to make such a negative review, but unfortunately the reality is that I had a really bad dinner in this restaurant, the food not only disgusted me in terms of taste, heaviness and greasiness, but it also gave me nausea and food poisoning for the whole night. None of the dishes magnify the flavor of the main ingredient, everything was heavily cooked and dipped in fat. Low quality cuisine, unsuccessful “creativity”, non-existent delicacy of the dishes. In short, not just a huge disappointment, but a huge disappointment having paid $250 with just one beer and tap water. In reality it would have been a disappointment even if we had paid 80$, given the disgust that accompanied us during and after dinner. Bad experience. It was the first time that, having dined in a high-end/medium-high-end restaurant, I ate really badly. Sure NOT RECOMMENDED. The "A5 wagyu tartare" could have had a discreet taste, a little spicy and a little acidic, but it navigated in fat and oil and was served with slices of pan brioche fried in poor quality oil, which had not been dried from the frying oil and therefore were very greasy and completely soaked in oil inside, causing disgust, even though they were crunchy on the outside. Overall it was a dish of extreme heaviness. The “caviar shrimp toast” was the same repetition of the fried pan brioche soaked in oil, a sort of French toast, with tasteless shrimps inside and salmon caviar on top (nothing special). No fish taste at all, but only the taste of heavy frying, full of oil that had killed every taste. Taste of sea: not received. After eating a quarter of the toast I was already disgusted and lost my appetite. We should have asked to cancel the rest of the dishes ordered, but stupidly, in order not to appear rude, we continued with the dinner, in the hope that once the "fat-soaked and fried bread" effect had passed, we could hope for at least a decent combination of flavors. Unforgivable mistake! "Short rib Kare kare" was an abundant portion of meat sailing in fat, peanuts oil, meat fat... the whole was not pleasant but cloying. “Chili octopus” was a portion of 2 large (fried and crunchy) octopus tentacles. In itself the taste was not bad, especially if they were accompanied only by the eggplant puree. But the addition of the strong sour taste of the pickles covered the other flavors, making it impossible to amalgamate the components of the dish, otherwise its taste would deteriorate. The roti bread would have been good if it wasn't also soaked in grease. Unfortunately we had ordered desserts from the beginning too, and although we said we would like one of the two we had ordered, they brought us both. Here too we made a mistake in not having it brought back, but it seemed rude to us. “Ube profiteroles”: a useless, meaningless dessert. It tastes of nothing, lots of ube cream and zero flavor. Again heavy and tasteless. “Chocolate cremeux”: how to kill the taste of chocolate (what quality of chocolate??!!). Bad taste, which did not add anything special to the chocolate but rather took away its flavor making it unpleasant. Good chocolate crumble, but you had to discard the korean cashew (flavor that does not bind with anything) to be able to eat it. In short, a dessert with an ugly taste and whose elements did not amalgamate with each other. The environment is pretty nice, except for the carpet which is a bit kitsch in my opinion, the tables are large and the seats comfortable. The staff are friendly, kind and in some way attentive.
Big disappointment
I ate really badly, there was not one of the six dishes we ordered that did not disgust me. In the aftermath, I still haven't digested their food. Evidently it is a very overrated restaurant in terms of food. Nothing to say about the service, but the food is not good. The dishes are all too greasy. The Wagyu tartare was filled with oil that covered the flavor of the seasonings, and the fried milk bread was completely drenched in oil no matter how crispy it was. The flavor of the short ribs was profusely covered by the grease from the peanuts dressing, which no matter how much I tried to put aside was plentiful on the plate. I found the two desserts to be of low quality. The profiteroles were too soft, the ube cream had no flavor, and the only tasty thing was the parmesan topping. The chocolate creamy was disconnected from the accompanying cream, and the Korean Chili Cashew did not improve its situation. Unfortunately, the food at this restaurant was a real disappointment.
