Worst service I have had in over 5 years
I hate to leave bad reviews. I rarely do. If something is not my favorite, I usually move on. The only time that I will leave a bad review is if my service is an abomination. Sadly, I received the worst service that I have had in a very long time. I travel for a living. An average of 230 nights per year for the last 38 years. I eat out often. We had an off day in downtown LA and I was craving pasta for a late evening dinner. I opted to grab a plate of pasta and head back to my beautiful hotel. I walked in to the front door of Amante and watched both the server and bartender (William) look at me and instantly ignore me. That was disappointing. So be it. About 3 minutes later, the server returned to the front door and immediately assumed that I was an Uber driver or picking up some delivery. I was not. The moment that she realized that I was there to order my own food to take out, her demeanor absolutely changed. I ordered my dinner and paid. Well, not really. She re-rung up my order and I scanned my card for the second time. I had requested a receipt. No dice. I walked around the block to stretch my legs and sat at one of the tables by the front door. While I was sitting there, 2 Uber drivers walked up to the bar to address William and find out if their orders were ready. He 100% talked down to both of them and treated them terrible. I was shocked. It was all starting to make sense why my initial interaction was so poor. Shortly thereafter, a well dressed couple walked in and were greeted within 30 seconds and sat immediately. Weird. My food was done and William said "Penne with Vodka" and I sat up and approached him. He asked me for payment (again). I had already scanned my card twice and was now concerned that I would have triple paid for my dinner. He couldn't have been less friendly or helpful. It is odd for me that people that work in a service industry, dependent on tips, would treat people so poorly. It's against your own best interest. I worked in restaurants for 14 years when I was in school and would never self sabotage my earnings. William must be from a rather wealthy family. I scanned my card for the 3rd time and couldn't hold my tongue any longer. I pointed out to him that he shouldn't treat the Uber guys so poorly. They make it so that the restaurant can have an extra stream of income and help keep the bills paid. He did not agree with my summation and told me that he had not said the things that he did to one of the Uber drivers (I was 5 feet away and make my living with my ears). If I were the owner of a company and people that were hired to interact with the public were poor at it, I would replace them with competent people. To put the nail in the coffin, when I returned to my room, my Penne Vodka didn't have any parmesan on it nor any parmesan on the side as I had specifically requested. Really the only thing that I had asked for. Judging people by their appearance is a slippery slope.
Be the first to ReplyExcellent VerizonUp Dinner at Amante
As a Verizon Wireless customer for numerous years, I often get the opportunity to get super tickets. This time around, I was able to snag a free dinner at Amante Restaurant in Los Angeles. As we live in San Diego, the dinner had us staying in LA for the night. We spent the day in LA and went to dinner at 6 pm. When we arrived, there was only one couple seated. We were greeted and seated fairly quickly. We perused the VerizonUp Menu and were a bit disappointed in the very limited selections compared to their regular menu. We each selected a starter, a main entree, and then a dessert. My wife had their brushetta, skirt steak for the main entree, and their tiramisu dessert. I had their cheese bread, skirt steak, and then cheesecake. The brushetta was very good. The cheese bread almost like a pizza and tasted good as well. Their skirt steak came with mashed potatoes, arugula salad, and cranberry drizzled on the steak. We both thoroughly enjoyed the steak! Finally, we finished up out dinner with the aforementioned desserts. They were very good as well. Drinks were included and my wife had a Moscato. I just had a regular soft drink. Overall, we truly enjoyed our VerizonUp dinner. The staff were polite, attentive, and ensured we had a great evening. Thank you Amante Restaurant for a great evening and especially #Verizon Wireless for our dinner experience! Will definitely return to Amante in the future.
Be the first to ReplyA decent option for dinner
We stumbled upon this restaurant and were pleased. They seemed to be short on wait staff. And it could use a thorough cleaning - lots of dusty fake plants.
Be the first to ReplyLactose Free Surprise
After the best baked salmon since Seattle, I was ready for a nice dessert. Unfortunately, my lactose intolerance makes me a handicapped and difficult diner.
One of the benefits of dining early (4:30PM), is that we had the place to ourselves. I was able to speak to the chef and compliment him on the excellent Salmone al Forno. I then suggested a lactose free dessert that he could throw together with existing ingredients. Like a creative artist, he ran with it from there.
I call his creation: Palline di Pane Zuccherato (Sugared Bread Balls) with Raspberry sauce (see the picture).
Enjoy Amante.
Fantastic Staff
Meals were delicious and reasonable - staff were friendly and open till late. Downtown LA and close to shopping complex.
Be the first to ReplyAmante is better than many crowded DTLA restaurants
I am a local who lives in DTLA. The crowds are always large, it seems, at places like Maccheroni Republic, whereas I find the food to be of higher quality at Amante. Why then is it often not very crowded? It's a mystery because the prices are moderate, the interior space is charming, and the menu is large. Share, for example, the large and delicious Gorgolate di Lecce Salad (Butter lettuce, avocado, pears, walnuts, cranberry, Gorgonzola cheese and pear dressing). My wife and I haven't had a better dinner salad in all of DTLA.
One reason for the lack of crowds might be that it's a block or so off the busy Friday night/Saturday night Spring Street corridor -- but not by much.
So give it a try. If you share a large salad as mentioned, get a couple pastas and maybe a glass of wine, you'll have a much better meal than at some of the more popular spots in the downtown area.
Great location; great food
Fantastic food and service; great location as far as Downtown LA goes.. Downtown is never an easy place to get in and out of but this restaurant is centrally located, easily accessible and has a paid parking lot adjacent to it. Loved the atmosphere and decor. There’s even a small sidewalk patio, just like in Europe, with tables for two. The interior is wide open, the kitchen is visible but hands down my favorite part is the coffee bar. Superb coffee and service all the way around; the food is delicious and fresh and very reasonably priced. There’s even a tiny second floor that has a couple of tables for maximum privacy or romantic setting. Will definitely return here whenever I’m in LA
Be the first to ReplyBusiness lunch disappointing
We ordered from Amante for a showroom and when we went to pick for three we got 3 nugget sized pieces of bread to go with our pasta and salad and was extra bread was an extra charge. The pasta with meatballs was good but no parmesan was on it or offered. The salad was good. Disappointed.
Be the first to ReplyA Hidden Pearl
This restaurant Should be so much more popular than it is. With two floors, great staff and insanely good food - this is one of the best restaurants I have been to ever in my life. Located in downtown L.A, I can understand why not more people have found the way. We ate lasagne and chicken, which both were really tasty. Chill atmosphere as well!!
Be the first to ReplyAwesome pizza and pasta
Food here is consistently so great, I hate that I'm now thinking about it and not going to be able to eat any tonight. Great pizza, especially the il carne, plus excellent chicken parmesan and pasta options too. I can't comment on the restaurant itself, I've only had delivery, but they are always faster than I would expect and orders are just right.
Be the first to ReplyConsistently delicious
After ordering delivery many times, decided to go by the restaurant. It was such a pleasant surprise to find such a cute place, excellent service and a pretty good happy hour. Nearly everything on the menu has been ordered over the past year, and I can confidently say that I have not had a meal that I didn't truly enjoy.
The shrimp pizza is an absolute winner, as are the ravioli and chicken penne. The baked spaghetti portion is so generous it can actually be shared. Save room for desserts! Apparently they are all made in the restaurant, so you'll never get anything frozen.
Get excited about this place!
First, we are food snobs and this place far exceeded our expectations. This is our first, not last, time there and we had to write a review immediately. We tried two different pizzas, both superb and SO flavorful. The bread they bring to the table is amazing, with dipping oil. They have a happy hour prices from 4-7. The house made tiramisu is worthy of being sold in Italy. They do a large lunch business and HUGE take-out business until 3 or 4am. They gave us their baguette (warm and soft) and as stuffed as we were, we race-walked home to try it.
