Pleasant surprise
Booked for dinner on a Friday night in May and not sure what to expect. We were very pleasantly surprised with some very good cooking. My wife enjoyed her tiger prawn starter while my risotto with fresh dill and loads of salmon was wonderful. We both enthused over the sea trout mains which were beautifully cooked, The Malbec was the best of the three wines by the glass that we chose, Place was surprisingly quiet given the quality of the food,

Very good food for lunchime indeed. Under-rated mains. Service good, staff friendly. Wine list not too deep but good by comparison with others in the area.

Great coffee, but...
Lovely cup of coffee but the sausage breakfast roll was an expensive joke; a single burn halved sausage on a very small greasy roll. Very disappointed for £5.20
Be the first to ReplyFabulous restaurant
I booked this fabulous restaurant for me and my husband for evening dinner during a week’s holiday in Cornwall.
Small & family run with an excellent menu and good choice of wines by the glass.
Excellent service and we had a lovely table by the fireplace and in front of a window.
A glass of pink fizz followed by warm pitta and a plentiful plate of hummus to start which we shared, then I had pumpkin and sage ravioli, served on a bed of beautifully cooked greens, the pasta was perfect and all so flavoursome. My husband had the most tender pork shoulder with a herb mash and cider jus which he said was amazing. We finished with coffee. Highly recommend this very accommodating little restaurant in Penzance.
Valentine’s night
We visited the Alverne for Valentine’s night , when staying with my sister who lives in Cornwall . We booked here on her recommendation and the reviews . I had the Hake risotto with prawn and lobster from the Valentine’s menu . However the Hake was replaced with cod , but I was informed before I ordered . It was very pricy at £32 but it was obviously a special occasion . My husband had the burger. I was disappointed with mine . It was fresh and tasty , but nothing special and a very small portion size . Still felt hungry after I’d eaten it , which for that price I don’t expect to . My husband’s meal was plentiful and burger cooked as requested. I went on to have a dessert, crème brûlée. A very tiny Portion and it was served completely cold . I had two glasses of fizz and a coffee , my husband had a tea . Meal came to over £80 . The ambiance was good , staff friendly and the food came quickly. Usually I work on the premise that you get what you pay for , but this wasn’t true on this occasion. Very overpriced.

Exceptional prawn starter … aesthetic presentation and a lovely texture and palate. Perhaps two or three more prawns would have topped it off, but starters, after all, are designed to leave you wanting more …
The main was a pork belly, expertly decorated and dripping with fine jus.
Service all-round is cordial and precise. Highly recommended for morning coffee or evening meal.
ripped off by rude waiter
I had the steak burger which was not steak but some cheap beef with a bit of salt and the rude waitress appeared and said I have a kids burger here and it was actually my full size 'steak burger' so thats a representation of its size for you.
Be the first to ReplyVery nice food, good service, a touch pricey.
Booked this venue based on good reviews. It did not disappoint though it has to be said the prices are a bit more London price and a touch dearer than one might be expected.
Service was good and ambience welcoming. Two large glasses of Rose, Chorizo and Atichokes for starters and a Burger and chips with a Hake main meal came to £70. Would visit again but feel there maybe other options worth exploring. Good for an occasion.
Birthday Treat from my Wife
We were visiting Penzance and The Alverne was recommended to us. We booked in advance and it was just as well as the restaurant was very busy on a Wednesday evening.. We had a lovely meal and good wine. The fish I had was well cooked and presented as was my wife's .

As we walked in, I thought the place had a cafe feel to it, but the menu is varied and the quality of the food is really good, with excellent flavours. My wife declared her butternut squash, chickpea and sweet potato Thai red curry a success, and my Thai chicken stir fry had well balanced Thai flavours with holy basil and kaffir lime coming to the fore. Not cheap at £17.00 for a medium sized portion though, and the butternut dish was just 50p cheaper. A medium glass of wine £7.50 Mmmm!, and a large one £10.50.
