Mac and cheese was dry.
Kinda over priced for what it is. Corn bread was also drey and crumbly. Food took a little while to come out. But drinks were very very good.

The food was delicious, & the new artwork was a nice touch. Alta Adams is one of my favorite restaurants in LA!

I love this place! Service is always great and, most importantly, the food always hits! Plus, the bartender always makes me a delicious drink!
Be the first to ReplyEverything is a 10/10.
Best fried chicken I've ever had. House brisket, shrimp and grits, chicken and waffles and not to mention a perfect iced oat milk latte.
Be the first to ReplyNazareth- Wow.
Needs training. Loves using the word Miss and telling you that he is being friendly while cutting you off and being condescending. After our first $100 round of drinks we left due to his unrelenting rudeness. Would have easily done another 3 to 4 rounds plus food. Now for how the interactions started. I walk in and say hello, he responds with, if you are a walk in, its going to be 8:15 to 8:30. Hour wait is fine with me however maybe you start with hello. Lady behind me walks in and he greets her with, "well aren't you a fresh breath of air." I mentioned that my group already checked in and pointed to the rest of my party that was patiently waiting. Realizing the mistake of assumption was made, here is an opportunity to turn things around....... Not his response. He then made sure we were even more uncomfortable (Girlfriend, Her Best Friend and 9 year old son) by asking us to stop crowding the waiting area. He asked us to move to the side bar/chef kitchen table to stay out of the way. Then told us that children cannot be at the bar. (where he asked us to go). To add insult to injury, the 8:30 quote was not met and we watched plenty of walk in customers get seated ahead. He let me know honestly that i was not a regular and i shouldn't expect to be seated before his regulars. All three of us work in the industry and live in the neighborhood. We know how to treat people and have similar expectations around how we should be treated. I honestly hope that this restaurant is busy 7 days a week as we were made to feel that they did not need us as patrons. Reason for 2 stars vs. 1.... Bar staff was very friendly and very knowledgably.

We stopped in for a bite to eat before heading out to an event. We were happily greeted by the staff and ushered to a requested outside table. Our server was actually a worker in the Adams Wine Shop. He was a pure delight, our visit was a while ago but I believe his name was Jerry. He proceeded to tell us about the wine selections and helped us peruse the menu. I settled on the shrimp & grits with a side of fries. The shrimp was a little bit undercooked but the grits were perfect so it made the dish good. The fries were excellent.

Amazing atmosphere, food is A1, and the staff are super friendly. Plenty of different seating options depending on the type of mood you are in.
Be the first to ReplyFood and service are A1.
I've loved this neighborhood staple since the first time I tried it and I love that it is equally loved by the community. Great! Highly recommended.

If you wanna eat fantastic food with bold flavors, listen to good music, and vibe with delicious drinks and cool ambiance, then this is the place to be!! I was so happy with all the food selections they had. You can tell that there is a lot of love and passion that goes into not only the food, but the service as well. We will absolutely be bringing back more friends with us, as well as coworkers. For recommendations, definitely can't go wrong with the salmon. Fresh, flakey, filled with flavor! Love the steak with the cowboy butter. Absolutely amazing, thick, juicy, and large portion. To be honest, all the portions were large, and I love that when I go to places because it's worth it to spend my money and I love good left overs. I feel like I can name the whole menu, but the deviled eggs were the best I've had, aside from the ones my husband makes. If you're a wine lover, this is the place to be!! Great wine selections, and they do not disappoint. Also loved the pork chop and fish with the yuzza sauce under it. Oh and sides that are a MUST - cornbread, Mac and cheese, greens, and yams sopped up in this butter. I'm telling you, this place is going to get more and more popular, they are already super busy. If I could eat there everyday I would. I'm obsessed and can't stop thinking about the flavors that were dancing in my mouth and belly. We will be coming back for suuure and with more people.

I'm sorry that this place didn't measure up after reading about and all the hype, and because it's a Black owned restaurant, but it was a major disappointment. The service staff was fine, and the ambiance of the place is okay, but they need to work on the temperature control as it was a little cold in there and cooled off the food too quickly. And going further on the food it's way too overpriced for the portions you receive and the taste is sorely lacking. Seasoning is either nonexistent or too heavy trying to overcompensate. I ordered the "fried chicken", which according to the server is brined and then cooked in the oven, all the seasoning was in the coating not the rest of the meat, and I had to send back some because it was undercooked. They told me the chicken was fully cooked but the brine process made it look like it wasn't, I know uncooked meat when I see it. I also ordered the mac and cheese which was awful, it had a heavy smoky flavor to it, and too many cheese varieties used in it and a mushroom béchamel which made it really weird. The cornbread should've been foolproof but it was as dry as the Sahara, and crumbled at the touch. And I ordered the ginger limeade and it was horrible, changed it out to a lemonade and that was a watery concoction that begged for help. All in all I was disappointed with the food and prices all around, a shame really.

Great food, and enjoyed our seat at the chef's counter getting to watch the action. The fish was superb, and everything we tried was delicious. We had dinner reservations, and they were ready promptly when we arrived. While they finished getting things set up it was no issue to order our first drinks at the bar. The service was informative and friendly, and made us feel welcome. Would definitely come back again. Great local spot to add to west Adams, and appreciate their vision and vibe.
Be the first to ReplyA bit of a disappointment.
I've been waiting to try this place for over a year and it was let down: the server was kind but the service fell off as the night went on. The food is just okay. The salmon was a large portion, but it was undercooked. The highlight was as the sweet potato dumplings/gnocchi. I would not recommend the Mac and cheese or cornbread which were very dry and came in small portions. I wouldn't blame you for giving this place a try, but I will not be a repeat for me.
Be the first to ReplyThis was our 2nd trip to Alta.
The first time was brunch and this time dinner. The chef takes southern soul food and puts their unique twist on them and the outcome is delicious. The interior space is lovely as well!

I took a friend for a birthday dinner on Sunday! When I made the reservation, I was asked if it was a special occasion and I said yes! Thought she would've gotten a comp dessert! Wrong! I ate at Alta a year ago and thought it was overpriced then, but wanted to give it another try! The first time I was there, sides were included with each entree! This time all sides were extra! The portions are laughable! My shrimp and grits was served in a shallow dinner salad side bowl! The collard greens side was served in a shallow bowl the size of a saucer! I don't like to feel that I've been ripped off and will never return to Alta! Instead, I'll cross the street and have a lovely, reasonably priced meal at Vick's All Day! Also, this is the second time I had to wait to be seated after making a reservation for 5:30 ( opening time)!

Not once have I written a review for a host at a restaurant, but here I am! We came for Valentine's Day, and we were seated about 45 minutes after our reservation time. Little frustrating after making a reservation, but Nazereth was a great communicator during the process and did an AMAZING job with the remainder of the patrons that were a little less patient. A+ service Food was great, but it was also priced pretty high! Overall a good experience
Be the first to ReplyPro: AMAZING food, good prices.
CON: Poor service (very friendly but inattentive and slow), weak drinks. Feels like a restaurant run by a truly gifted chef who hired friends rather than an experienced waitstaff. If the serving staff was more professional and the caps a little looser on the booze (I was the DD, but those in my party didn't feel so much as a buzz after two drinks), this would be a true five-star restaurant. You should DEFINITELY eat here because the food is insanely good, but be prepared for slow service and to have to ask for things you'd expect to show up on their own. Worth the trouble IMHO, but one member of our party said they won't go back.

This was an unexpected surprise, everything from the service to the ambiance was great. Our servers were attentive and personable, the drink menu was creative, and the food was excellent. I started with the Viola Davis - a cocktail with beet juice, I like beet juice and gave it a try expecting to order something different later. I loved it!For the table, we ordered the corn bread, deviled eggs, black eyed fritters and Pimento cheese. All of them were so good but the fritters and pimento cheese were so good, we ordered another round with our meal. I could go back and make a meal out of their appetizers!I had the chicken sandwich, other people had the fried fish. I loved my fried chicken sandwich and would order it again. I was told the fried fish was also excellent and want to go back to try that. The only negative thing about the restaurant is the parking which other reviewers point out. I was able to find street parking, my friends used valet parking.
Be the first to ReplyExpensive cocktails for absolutely no reason.
But that was the first chicken sandwich I tried that was very good. However. Lunch for two totalled over $100 including valet parking. Nice to see a new place in the neighborhood. Be prepared to spend too much for too little.
Be the first to ReplyThis review should have been sent in January:On Christmas
This review should have been sent in January:On Christmas Day, after dinner, our family like to talk about old times, current events, etc. Then we got on the discussion about where to take my mom for dinner for her 85th birthday.Prior to that day, I had asked my mom to think about where she'd like to go. So she saved a copy of a magazine that she pulled from the LA Times newspaper titled, "LA Times Best Restaurants In LA. She mentioned that after reading about Alta Adams, that is a place she wanted to go. My brothers, sister and I took a look at it by website, reviews, menu and the ranking of 39. Then we decided this seems like a place that is serving good food.First of all, the RESY App was confusing, I did not see or notice a time for dinner. We originally chose 5:00pm for Saturday, January 7. But I never received a confirmation. The day before, I called the restaurant and found out that the restaurant open at 5:30. So I quickly made changes and then informed my family that 6:45 was the new time.I was surprised about the warning of a fee that would be charged, if a member was over 15 minutes late. I never heard of a restaurant doing that. But I told my family of this anyway. Now, I'm wondering what made Alta Adams the 39th best restaurant in LA? The food was not representative of that ranking. My mom said her oxtail was salty and the meat was tough. My sister and I ordered the special of Blackened Salmon. But the kitchen only had one. So she opted for the shrimp and grits. My salmon was overly blackened and burnt, too spicy, and too salty. My veggies were also overly spicy and overcooked. I struggled to get it all down, as my eyes were watery and my sinuses were dripping. The refreshing cucumber mint soda and water helped to bring my taste buds back. My sister said her shrimp and grits was lukewarm.. My two brothers and sister in law had the brisket. One of my brothers and his wife wanted the fat trimmed from the brisket. There was too much fat on all their orders, as that request was ignoredWe also wanted to know why the sides weren't included in all the entrees, and why the portions were too small? I looked at the plates of all those eating brisket, and each one looked like the thickness of bologna meat. I thought my salmon size was ok. But to have to buy sides as an extra was absolutely ridiculous. The waitress even told us that sides were shareable. But they were not big enough to share. The good thing about the dining experience was the ambience and the 7up and Sock-it To Me Cakes. They were extremely tasty. But my mom got a slither of a slice for her birthday. And my brother and I paid $10 each for one slightly bigger. But they were an extremely small slice. We sat in the Garden Patio because we were told that there were heat lamps to keep us warm. My side of the table was cold as the lamp was on the opposite side. I had to stand near the lamp to warm up and then brought my chair over to stay warm. I did see about five lamps not in use.To cap off the bad dining experience was what we saw included in the total of the check: "COVID PROTOCOL?" REALLY!!! We asked the waitress about this, and it made some in our party laugh at the explanation. We are paying for your health, safety and missing work if you catch COVID??? Your workers were not wearing masks and such, and we do not feel safe as well. Maybe they're giving us COVID.It feels like they're adding unnecessary fees to take our money, and serving small portions that aren't cooked well. I mentioned talking to a manager about the experience. But other members of my family just felt we'll just leave it alone, and never come back. But something is bugging me: There is a reason that they're ranked 39 out of 101 of LA's best restaurants. Did you lose the chef that got you to this ranking? In other words, did the cooking staff change recently, or only for that night? I'm always willing to give one a second chance, if changes are made. I just need to know what happened? I even sent a letter to the owners, etc. They never replied or offer an apology. That was a bad experience for my moms birthday!

We had a great experience here and I will be recommending Alta to anyone who's looking for a chill brunch spot with delicious southern inspired food.Caveat:- we were sat in the patio which was both beautiful, and had a nice breeze on a hot day (latter is hard to guarantee!). Inside def had a modern diner ish charm, with high ceilings and felt like a pleasant space.

Very good collard greens! We sat outside and it's a bit cold back there but otherwise everything was great, loved the service as well!
Be the first to ReplyGeez, I wanted to like and support this restaurant so
Geez, I wanted to like and support this restaurant so badly! West Adams is thriving with so many great eateries emerging but in afraid Alta may not be able to keep up!First up, I called before coming to confirm an early table for two. The host let me know there was room but it would get busy later. I arrived first and my friend was running late looking for parking so I sat at the bar and took in the ambience. The bar tenders were really cool, talkative, had lots of recommendations and knowledge of the spirits. Some I had never heard of so he allowed me to sample one before he made my yummy drink. I enjoyed my drink while taking in the cozy, dim & stylish ambience and even talked to some other patrons at the bar who were waiting as well. The host was very anxious about my friend's arrival time (which I understand) but she was looking for parking AND THE INSIDE WAS 90% empty! It is likely you'll have to valet, because Adams parking isn't the best. The back patio is beautiful and most folks prefer to sit out there. The host said they had some big parties coming in and out window was closing, luckily the homie got there and we were seated in the second room indoors. There were a couple actors eating at a table across from us which was cool to see. I got the vibe that the restaurant was trying to create more hype because of the folks dining there rather than the food, service, etc. similar to a club in Hollywood that wants to seem excised popular. Our waiter was a nice guy, who answered our questions and took orders as expected. He let us know that we would have to order everything at once and wouldn't be able to add sides, addtl entrees later. I thought this was SUPER strange. So, you're turning down money and everything is a la carte with small portion sizes so we weren't sure if we would be satisfied. We deviations go big and order the black eye pea fritters - very good and different. I'm the vegan in the group so I go the roasted cauliflower head - I've made a better version at home in my Dutch oven. The poor thing was bland and it was the only thing on my plate. Yikes. My friend got cornbread and fish- she said it was nothing to write home about. We caught up and ate laughed, drank for almost 2 hours and the dining room had at least 8 two tops and a huge 8 seater booth available the whole time we dined. I wonder where this elusive crowd was? Sure didn't see them in the way out either but the same row of empty booths were. I may give the lunch menu a go because I saw they had a fried tofu sandwich and I like to see how restaurants execute the vegan/vegetarian goodies. Overall, disappointing and food not worth the price to me. I'm willing to drop a bag for something unique and delicious but Alta fell short for me
Be the first to ReplyThe food was ok, the service was ok.
The host was really good. More than half of our party of six arrived in a timely manner. Didn't like the fact that it was over an hour to be seated. If the table is available why not seat the party..... the drink that I had was good and strong. The ambiance was nice. I would say this is not real southern cuisine. It has a real American spin on it. I think its wild for deviled eggs to be $12 for four. That's super wild. But overall it's ok.
Be the first to ReplyThe food was not good.
At our table we had the Mac & cheese which was completely over priced and not very good, the greens tasted like they were directly from a can and drowned in vinegar, the red beans and rice had no flavor and they also tasted as if they came from a can. The brisket was okay. Banana pudding was not good and not worth it. The cauliflower dish was okay. Everything was really over priced. I will definitely not be returning. They add an extra 3% to the bill and say it is for "wellness" for the staff. We asked what it was for and they said it was for Covid testing. I'm pretty sure that is free! We had them remove it from the bill. The ambiance is nice but I would never come back and I regret going. I wish I could give it zero stars. There are far better places to eat, especially for the price.
