The Grotto @ Rayavadee (Hotel guests only) Ao Nang Reviews from The Last Year
Sunset dinner, very special
We booked a Dinner reservation and timed it so we could watch the sun set. Absolutely amazing views and beautiful sunset. It all felt very special, perfect for a romantic couples meal for sure. The food was of high quality and the Seafood Platter we had was delicious and huge! Overall I felt the service was good, staff were happy to take pictures for us and were friendly. The price was a bit eye watering to be honest but it did feel very special and we have some amazing pictures and memories. Overall very satisfied with location, atmosphere & food. Highly recommend for a special evening.
Disappointing Treatment at The Grotto: Rayavadee's Managerial Misstep on April 5th Lunch
My recent visit to The Grotto, nestled within the Rayavadee resort in Railay Beach, Thailand, left me deeply dissatisfied—not due to the food, which was passable, but rather the abysmal treatment we received from the restaurant manager. Despite the decent decor and acceptable cuisine, it was the manager's attitude that truly soured our experience. Right from the moment we stepped in, it was evident that we were not regarded as valued guests. Instead, we felt like mere afterthoughts, undeserving of even the most basic courtesy. The manager's hospitality seemed reserved exclusively for hotel guests, relegating us, mere diners, to a secondary status. The experience only worsened during the ordering process, with the manager displaying a notable degree of aggression and unprofessionalism. This was particularly distressing for my wife, who felt even more slighted by the manager's attitude while inquiring about the drink options. Furthermore, our disappointment was compounded when we discovered discrepancies between the menus, with one lacking water options. Despite bringing this to the manager's attention, she failed to address the issue adequately, instead displaying frustration when we sought clarification. Throughout the entire ordeal, the manager's indifference was palpable. She barely spared us a glance, let alone extending a greeting or showing any interest in our satisfaction. It seemed as though our presence was nothing more than an inconvenience to her, with her disdain thinly veiled. This stark contrast between her warm demeanor towards hotel guests and the cold indifference towards us was not only disappointing but deeply disheartening. While the food and decor were passable, they were overshadowed by the manager's attitude, which tainted the entire dining experience. It is truly disheartening to feel unwelcome in an establishment that prides itself on hospitality. In the future, I will be seeking dining options elsewhere, where all patrons are treated with the respect and courtesy they rightfully deserve.
A view to die for
Beautiful setting with spectacular sunset in a cave with live music. The food is of a very high quality, if very expensive. The service lets the experience down, there are either not enough staff to service the guests or they are not been trained well enough (slow service and not very attentive) but are friendly when you can catch their attention. If they can sort this out if would be amazing as opposed to very good.
Food is not good
The view is beautiful but the food is not good. Staff is friendly but not enthusiastic. We had way more expectations on the restaurant. A bit disappointed.
Beautiful meal & setting, but mediocre service
Firstly, the views are absolutely stunning, as was the food. We couldn’t fault the setting or our meal itself. The only thing we have to mark down for is that initially the staff could not have been more attentive and helpful; frequently refilling our wine, chatting with us etc, which you’d expect when paying what we did for a 3 course meal here. After we had finished our starter, the staff became less attentive. We waited a long time between courses, and had to top up our own wine. We also had to ask them for the desert menu. We felt as though when another family arrived, who were maybe paying more than us became the priority. We would have understood the lack of service had the place been busy, but we were one of only four tables at any one time. This service towards the end of our meal really did change our opinion on the place, as they like to remind people they are exclusive/private, so their service should reflect this.
Fantastic Restaurant and Views
My husband and I dined at the Grotto to celebrate his 40th birthday. The food was excellent and views at sunset are unmatched. This restaurant is located in the Rayavadee Resort which is a 5 star property. As expected, the prices and quality of drinks and food within the restaurant match. For people who are upset they cannot come in off the beach and have drinks at the Grotto, I would encourage you to book a room at this amazing hotel and then come for lunch or dinner. If the hotel allowed all the random beach goers into the restaurant, it would be absolute mayhem. It is a small place with only 7 barstools and perhaps 15 tables. I very much appreciate the hotel keeping the Grotto exclusively for their guests.
Not great - way below expectations
Food is not good. Service is mediocre. We had way more expectations on the restaurant and the hotel as well. A bit disappointed. Would recommend to eat somewhere else !
Lunch with a view from a CAVE
Fantastic lunch in jaw-dropping setting. We had two salads and two entrees. For those complaining about the prices, you are at a 5-star luxury resort that requires planes, vans, and a boat to get here. So, the food has to be shipped in, too. Maybe cut them some slack on prices or stay at the budget hotels in Railey Beach.
Wouldn’t recommend
The staff were helpful, so this isn’t aimed at them. We booked for my 30th birthday after seeing videos of it on TikTok we had to get a boat to the island to get it (so wouldn’t recommend unless you’re already on the island as we struggled to get a boat back). We requested a good view and paid months in advance, we got told to sit anywhere but the only spaces were behind people next to a plant pot and away from the sunset. Food was nice but overall overpriced. Wouldn’t recommend going we went to loads of other sunset bars for a lot more reasonable prices and with better views.

Mostly from people who don't need their reservations or appointments any longer. AT has no relationship with places listed and acts as a platform connecting buyers and sellers making sure that listed reservations are real and that privacy is not compromised when transacting.

Can come from a lot of places, people who don't want to get charged their cancellation fee or people who just have them and cant go.

almost all restaurants aren't affiliated with AT and I'm guessing it's mostly people wanting to not pay cancellation fees.

Reservations could be posted for a variety of reasons. Most likely, the person who secured the reservation can no longer attend - to avoid accruing a "no show" fee, they can find someone to take their place.
