High Expectations. Big Disappointment.
Average dining experience. Me and my partner went for a la carte evening meal and had two courses. Starter and a Main. We were both disappointed. Food was “one taste” , not a lot of flavour. My partner had the chicken and I had the Lamb. The Lamb was flavourless and the chicken was too. In short, save your money. Go somewhere else.

We had an amazing experience at this special restaurant and it definitely lived up to its two stars in our opinion! We've eaten in many Michelin restaurants and love visiting new ones while traveling. I was concerned after reading a few negative recent reviews, but from start to finish our evening was spectacular. We had excellent service and each dish was delicious. We each chose the 6-course tasting menu. You can choose one of two items for each course so we chose both and shared. I got the wine paring and my wife ordered by the glass. The wines were interesting and fantastic , served by a knowledgeable and passionate sommelier. Many have mentioned the bread cart, and we loved it. I would highly recommend Steirereck to anyone looking for a special experience with over the top food and wine.

One of the worst, if not the worst, dining experience we have ever had. We were only presented the option of a tasting menu, presumably due to the size of our party (8). The meal took over 4.5 hours, and most of the staff had gone home for the night before we were freed from our gastronomic prison at 1:00 a.m. There was over an hour wait between the main course and the cheese course; the ice cream served for dessert was completely melted; and the food was mediocre to sub-par. Service was equally abysmal, as we had to pour our own wine and water, and the wait staff failed to check to see if we needed more wine or water. Run, don’t walk, away from this place. Overrated and an embarrassment as a dining experience.

Extremely slow service, had to pour our own wine. Food was just ok. Wouldn’t waste the time or money. The whole staff was leaving and we were stuck there waiting.
Be the first to ReplyUnpretentious and welcoming. Service beyond compare. Unparalleled food excellence, with a La carte options.
One of the best meals we’ve ever had. Definitely in our top five. Service was exceptional. Environment was beautiful. Food was beyond excellent. Will definitely return.

We celebrated our Europe tour ending with a lunch tasting menu here. We did not know what to expect but I think what makes it memorable are the little surprises like citron favors or five different dessert tastes like gooseberry ice cream bars in white chocolate. The food was served by formal dressed staff and was perfectly prepared.

Very rude attitude when you try to book a place directly, although I had a huge budget for this dinner. But thankfully Vienna is full of nice and elegant restaurants

I don't doubt that I had a princely meal and that a lot of trouble was taken. But - and this is not what they want, I'm sure - what I actually remember was the effect the service had on the occasion. It sounds churlish to criticise the struggling waiter, but he really didn't have to talk so much, so lengthily. Particularly as his English was fairly unintelligible; some trouble with pronunciation if not vocabulary. A right pain to listen to after the tenth or eleventh time. Why can't waiters sense the mood of the table? We are all very experienced travellers / diners, could read the menu ourselves, and did not count it a blessing to hear this earnest fellow telling us what we could (mostly) already read or see. The wines, too, were a laborious descriptive affair. The best staff excel because they *do* alter their style for the party, dosing their input subtly. A shame they didn't, when the chef was dosing his contribution so majestically.

If you’re reading this you know that Steireck has a deserved reputation for food and service. So I wanted to say something more about the ethos of training that makes it so special. We were looked after by someone who had no particular aspirations to restaurant work 18 months ago- her broad smiles, willingness to engage, attention to her job, impressive mastery of English cannot be just chance. Someone is helping the youth they hire to become their best selves. To whoever is doing that please accept our thanks. Steireck is a treat. What they are doing is amazing and it’s clear it’s right through the team! Thank you for such special night in your brilliant restaurant in beautiful Vienna!

The restaurant is just beatiful and so spacious, you get the great ambience while feeling the privacy almost as if you were alone. Both the tasting menu and pairing wines were excellent; the service, second to none.
Be the first to ReplyWonderful service but a bit pricey for the experience
I agree with much of what Shellym827 had to say about her mixed experience. Although I very much enjoyed the half pairing of Austrian wines I did with the six-course menu, I also found it off-putting that the restaurant did not give prices for its wines and I was surprised o see that a half pairing was so expensive. (I should add that I often do wine pairings at Michelin-rated restaurants and am no stranger to high price tags.) In addition, I lived in Japan and enjoy Japanese cuisine so I was interested to see how the chef would combine Japanese and Austrian flavors. While I enjoyed the various courses, nothing really stood out to me as I dish I would be eager to come back and eat again. It seems like some ingredient combinations tried a bit too hard and didn't completely work. The service was warm and friendly and I will dream of that incredible bread cart for a long time. Overall, I enjoyed my experience but I wouldn't return given the price tag.
Be the first to ReplyThe very best place for a special meal
Best Michelin star restaurant in Austria and one of the most creative in Europe. Excellent service, warm hostess, beautiful room, best place in Vienna for a special meal.
Be the first to ReplyOutstanding Dining Experience
One of our all-time favorite dining experiences. Every dish was multilayered, complex, creative yet balanced. Standouts were the char, leek heart, duck and the Jerusalem artichoke ice cream dessert (simply mindblowing.) On top of all that, the ridiculously rich and varied bread and cheese carts were an experience like none other - we are considering going back just to be able to sample the many breads and cheeses we weren’t able to try this time. Service was highly professional and attentive - it felt like half of the entire staff came to our table at some point to serve or explain a dish, including Mrs. Reitbauer herself. Interior is stylish, sleek and discrete. The only slight criticism is that I would have wished for a little more transparency on the pricing of the “aperitifs” and some of the other surcharges that drove up the bill quite a bit. Overall, an unforgettable experience that we cannot recommend enough.
Be the first to ReplyAnother level
There are Michelin starred restaurants and then there is another level and Steirereck is absolutely in that group. Everyone is fun and friendly yet they make you feel special. It’s slick, welcoming and utterly professional. And this feeds the overall atmosphere - not staid like many restaurants, but relaxed, trusting and enjoyable. This is before the food and a tasting menu which was a real journey with 7 hits out of 7. In terms of memorable and fulfilling high-end meals, this one makes my top 3 alongside El Bulli and Favikken.

The food, service and venue are top class, definitely worth the money and an experience not to be missed in Vienna. Cheese and bread trolleys are amazing and the best we have experienced.

Owned by the Reitbauer family Steirereck seeks to interpret Austria's cuisine in new ways, a location inside Vienna’s Stadtpark at the same time urban and one with nature such that guests feel transported to the fields, gardens and streams from which their meal is created.
Built in 1904 with a mirrored glass extension added later, and focused on native Ingredients less commonly offered in traditional restaurants, Steirereck’s tasting menu taps into country's cuisine in novel ways while historic dishes find themselves benefitted by Michelin 2* skills during lunch in a sun-bathed dining room.
Mainly light woods and crisp linens, several courses finished tableside or offered from rolling carts, it is after a Sparkling Wine toast that dining begins, the Bread Carte offering more than a dozen varieties including one impregnated by Blood Sausage while Canapes range from a delicate Beet Macaron and Jerusalem Artichoke Tart to the complexity of a chewy Carrot “pickled as Blueberries.”
Next offered fresh-cut Salad Greens from the Steirereck Garden plus velvety Leek Soup it is henceforth that each dish is presented with a detailed list of its contents, all happily explained by attentive yet affable service that even managed to appease a particularly ‘difficult’ diner at the adjacent table.
Skipping the famous Char in Bee’s Wax, late-winter’s Tasting instead begun by the Fish cooked mi cuit around Almond-Blueberry Cream with textural variants surrounding, a more traditional Lunch started with Reitbauer’s take on Viennese Wedding Soup featuring Lovage-infused Consommé, Veal Liver Dumplings and Spleen Toast.
Arguably Austria’s premier Restaurant, Chef Heinz Reitbauer’s dedication to agricultural research prominently noted in each plate, course two of the tasting sees Golden Osetra Caviar juxtaposing tender Beluga Lentils atop the flavors of Banana and Mushrooms while a follow-up of uncommon Carp from Lake Attersee is served grilled amidst spicy Citrus.
Led by Birgit Reitbauer up front, a recent winner of W50B’s Gin Mare Art of Hospitality Award, traditional dishes continue via Styrian Beef Gulash with Alpine Beef Cheeks, Spelt and Pickled Peppers while the tasting menu’s Piglet´s Tail is hidden beneath Tempura Shiso and Swiss Chard with vibrant cooking Jus.
Rounding out savories with classic Wiener Schnitzel and Sweetbreads, the latter served with an indigenous sweet Tuber called Yacon and nutty Aji Amarillo, the immense Cheese Carte was omitted in favor of saving space to enjoy previously unknown Service Berries atop Iced Cedar and the Forest Perennial Rye Souffle with a sidecar of Gin, Cornell Cherries and Dark Chocolate Ice Cream.
Not forgetting Reitbauer’s famous Potato Noodles with Poppyseed Butter and Crumble, nor the icy pedestal supporting Plum Ice Cream, Lunch concluded with myriad winter Citrus including Chocolates, Cookies, dried Peel and Gin Fizz Ice with Lemon Foam as a way of saying auf Wiedersehen.
Declining empire meets spearpoint of civilisation.
The setting is extremely modern and the dining stylish and contemporarily presented.
This straight through: the tables have modern serving elements that make it very entertaining. There are wine caddies, bread caddies, cheese caddies as big as flower carts that get pushed to your table so you can choose your selection.
Lunch would probably have been better to enjoy the huge windows and the park its set in.
We skipped the tasting menu (6/7 courses + a glass of different wine optional) because It's too much food for me and my friend doesn't drink at all.
We chose a la cart and enjoyed our selections. In any case there are several tid-bits added along the way and portions are generous so it was a big meal. I had a lovely winter salad and sturgeon. My friend had a soup and some braised fennels. Then we had dessert. The tocai I drank was superb. And the gin-fizz I was served after dinner amazing!
The cuisine is truly a revisitation of traditional dishes.
A very interesting combination.
Huge expectations... not met
We were at Steirereck for a special celebration. Waited so long for that evening and... well, it was good, but not according to a 2-star michelin restaurant. Again, tasty and fine, but this is not the best restaurant of Vienna, not at all. You should rather go to Bauer, Apron, Leontine, among others. The highlight: three pieces of pigeon served in a brochette with who knows what.

We chose a 6 course menu that costs 165 euro, a price we were ready to pay. They offered us a champagne at first, we found out it was 16 euro for a glass in the bill. They offered us chnapps before the dessert, also 16 euro for a glass that we didn’t even drink! Very disappointing to include things you offer to the client without mentioning the price of it.
Be the first to ReplyA 2 star that should be a 3 star
A lot of the flavor profiles at Michelin star restaurants are very similar. Truffle, foils gra..Xavier….At Steirereck the flavor profiles are simply outrageously unique and well fantastic. In every dish you can forage 5-6 different flavors and the dishes keep you going back for more and more. The bread and the cheese here are absolutely fantastic. Opt for the 7 course tasting menu. Your only paying 180 euros for 7 courses at a place that should be a 3 star restaurant. This place is in the worlds top 50 for a reason!!!!

If you are looking for a joyful gourmet experience that is over the top of “over the top,” this is your place. “Inventive, playful, experimental, glamorous and contemporary” are just the starting words. Presented with expert construction and knowing service, it’s a meal to remember.
I particularly liked that there were no smothering sauces; each ingredient was clearly visible on the plate and had a chance to show off its special contribution. One playful touch, they give you little descriptive “baseball” cards placed in a silver holder with each course. We took the wine pairing and got a complete tour of Austrian wine regions perfectly matched to each of our dishes.
I also enjoyed the parade of carts: a bread cart with a couple dozen offerings, a cheese cart where I was impressed that in addition to epoisse I scored three of the best stinkers from Normandy, getting a laugh from both my wife and the fromagier. And finally, the powdered sugar cart, a meter long tray of white sweetness hiding traditional Viennese crescent cookies. But wait! You also get a crescent cookie snow globe on the table to enjoy with the treat.
There were only five tables in our front room. Our dining companions included one celebrity business confab, two families with small, mostly well-mannered children and two dog owners. We couldn’t quite see what the dogs were being served, but the kids seemed quite content.
On a final note: if you are uncomfortable having your banker wait in the cab with the meter running, bring your biggest credit card. You won’t regret it and you will need it. But after such a fabulous meal, you won’t think twice about it.
Wonderful
A wonderful experience from beginning to the end. The taste menu was devine and the wines just as impressive. The staff were great with our girls (10 and 6).
The food, wine, service, venue, experience were just wonderful.
